Album review: LAZARUS DREAM – Lifeline

LAZARUS DREAM - Lifeline

Pride & Joy Music [Release date 17.06.22]

Second album from Lazarus Dream, which was put together by vocalist Carsten “Lizard” Shulz (Evidence One, Domain, Devoid) and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Markus Pfeffer (Scarlett, Winterland). Drummer Markus Kullmann (Sinner, Glenn Hughes), percussionist Thomas Rieder, and keyboards player Thomas Nitschke all return as guests again, along with percussionist Andy Lübbert and keys player Jorris Guilbaud (Devoid, Heart Line).

‘Dead End Symphony’, which features Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Black Country Communion, Sons Of Apollo, Billy Idol) on Hammond, Moog & synths, opens the album in full on hard rock mode. ‘Don’t Look Down’ is a bit standard, however, ‘Mind Like A Windmill’ is a classy hard rock tune. The bass groove on this is immense, whilst the chorus recalls Graham Bonnet and Alcatrazz.

‘Overdose Of Paradise’ has a Deep Purple feel with its driving Hammond riff/solo and the guitar solo from Markus Pfeffer. ‘Love Without A Net’ slows things down a tad, giving a chance to highlight Carsten’s melodious vocals. Mind you, he really belts it out on ‘Save Our Selves’, a song that wouldn’t look out of place on the past couple of MSG albums.

Two bonus songs to be had, with ‘Surrounded By Strangers’ – a catchy melodic rock featuring tasty synths – and their version of Animotion’s 1986 minor hit ‘I Engineer’. The latter keeps the original’s synth sound and adds in some Lazarus Dream guitar clout.

Lazarus Dream’s debut was one of 2020’s most consistent and enjoyable albums, and I am pleased to report ‘Lifeline’ is of a similar high standard. You’ll be hard pressed to find a high quality hard rock release this year like this one. ****
