Inside Out [Release date 12.08.22]
SiX By SiX is a new trio that sees Saga guitarist Crichton, Saxon drummer Nigel Glockler and vocalist & multi-instrumentalist Robert Berry (3 – Emerson, Berry, Palmer; Alliance) join forces. Maybe seeing Saxon’s drummer in a prog line-up may raise a few eyebrows, however, he shows what an accomplished drummer he is and why he has occupied the drum stool in Saxon for so long. For musical connections nerds like myself both Robert and Nigel were involved in the last days of GTR, which still featured Steve Howe.
Opening with ‘Yearning To Fly’ all the prog rock boxes are being ticked as you’d expect given the top class musicians involved. An enjoyable mix of Saga meets 3/Robert Berry solo work. ‘China’ follows and this is one heavy mutha of a tune, featuring an addictive melody and some simply superb playing from Ian Crichton. He excels himself throughout the album, none more so than on ‘Reason To Feel Calm Again’. Wow, that outro guitar is stunning.
Those who like a nice bit of keyboards and guitars interplay ‘Casino’ does the job. SiX By SiX have a knack of taking those beloved classic prog influences of ELP and Yes, then adding in their own musical magic. The Saga influence comes through again on ‘Skyfall’, whilst closing track ‘Save The Night’ sees the album out in melodic heaviness and style. One that Yes and Asia fans will enjoy.
SiX By SiX have provided one of 2022’s progressive music delights, featuring plenty of melody, solos and the ever melodious vocals of Robert Berry. One that should be top of your musical shopping list. ****
