Album review: JEFF AUG – Kiss Of The Liquid Moon

JEFF AUG - Kiss Of The Liquid Moon

Heavy Progressive Records [Release date 01.02.24]

You can’t help thinking – listening to this seventh solo album from acoustic guitarist Jeff Aug – “when is he going to break into ‘Classical Gas’?” Just like that classic acoustic piece, ‘Kiss Of The Liquid Moon’ is, though, very accessible and highly listenable.

Aug is a well established player, born in the USA but living (and touring) in Europe for the best part of two decades. He holds the novel distinction of holding a Guinness record of playing the most number of gigs in different countries during a 24 hour period.

The album works best when Aug is accompanied by cello and upright bass (on ‘Matilda’s Lullabye’) and an unnamed woodwind player on ‘Baritone Butterfly’ which marks this out from the usual solo guitar fodder. This reminds of another fine offering from Mark Vickness.

I am intrigued too by the song titles. It seems that Aug has let everyday concerns come into play, so we have the almost inevitable ‘Quarantine’, ‘Ceramic Tiles’ (a bit of D.I.Y?) and Two Rooms (a bit more D.I.Y.?) But ‘Fuck The Neighbors’ might just be too revealing…

Overall, in spite of the nomenclature, a restful and very appealing acoustic excursion that should sweep you up in its engaging reverie. ****
