Album review: EXIT EDEN – Femme Fatales

exit eden femme fatales

Napalm Records [Release date 12.01.24]

Exit Eden are down to the trio of Clémentine Delauney (Visions Of Atlantis), Anna Brunner (League Of Distortion) and Marina La Torraca (Phantom Elite), for this, their second album, after Amanda Somerville left the band last year to spend more time with her family.

Twelve songs – six originals, penned by Anna Brunner and Hannes Braun (Kissin’ Dynamite), bar ‘Dying In My Dreams’ which was co-written by Marina La Torraca – and six cover versions including songs from the Pet Shop Boys, Heart and Marillion.

Of the original songs, lead single ‘Run!’ is a definite highlight with a guest appearance of former Nightwish vocalist Marko Hietala adding an extra bit of magic to the proceedings. ‘Buried in the Past’ is bombastic stuff, whilst ‘Dying in my Dreams’ sweeps the listener along on a symphonic ride.

The Pet Shop Boys classic ‘It’s A Sin’ lends itself well to a symphonic arrangement and the trio give it plenty of vocal power. Not so taken by their take on Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’. Good vocals as you’d expect, however, perhaps a go at say ‘Faithfully’ or ‘Open Arms’ would have worked better.

Alice Cooper’s ‘Poison’ gets a gothic treatment and loving the strings into on this one. Heart’s ‘Alone’ is perfect for Exit Eden’ style of symphonic rock and those vocal highs will have Ann Wilson delighted I am sure.

Perhaps the most leftfield cover choice is Marillion’s ‘Kayleigh’. Heavy guitar, soaring vocals and a pomptastic chorus, what’s not to love? Exit Eden give it their own musical spin which is what a good cover version should do.

Great fun from start to finish and a symphonic metal/rock album that is overblown as you’d expect/want, with the added bonus of original songs this time around. ***1/2
