Single review: HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – One Word That Means The World (Arkhipov)

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate – Malcolm Galloway (vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer) and Mark Gatland (bass, backing vocals, keyboards and co-producer) – are back with a new single, ‘One World That Means The World (Arkhipov)’. It is the first single from the band’s eighth studio album ‘The Uncertainty Principle’, due to be released later in the year.

The song was inspired by the refusal of Soviet naval officer Vasily Arkhipov (1926-1998) to agree to an action that could have led to nuclear war. During the Cuban missile crisis, Arkhipov was the chief of staff of a flotilla of diesel powered submarines armed with nuclear torpedoes. He was stationed on the submarine B-59. The decision to launch nuclear torpedoes against the United States Navy required the agreement of all three onboard officers. Arkhipov refused to authorise the launch that had been approved by the other two officers. He was described by Thomas Blanton, director of the US National Security Archive as “the man who saved the world”.

This is at the more ‘popular’ end of Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate music, in that it is short and fits that old phrase, “made for radio”. The lyrics give this historic event a new lease of life, along with a sumptuous guitar solo.

Being proper old school, Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate add a B-side in the instrumental ‘Music For Dancing’. It is a tune to certainly get the feet tapping being a winning mix of piano/synths matched against guitar and rhythmic bass.

In these current dark times let’s hope there is another Vasily Arkhipov out there for all our sakes.
