Mascot Records [Release date 11.07.25]
Calva Louise are a multi-national, genre-blending band that consists of Jess Allanic (Vocals/Guitar/Keyboards), Alizon Taho (Bass/Backing Vocals) and Ben Parker (Drums/Backing Vocals). This is the band’s fourth album and first for Mascot Records, who they signed to last year.
“Our album is called Edge of the Abyss because that’s how we live. One misstep and everything could fall apart,” Jess Allanic says. “I emigrated twice, so I’ve already had a culture shock twice. This hurts a little less because this is where I want to be. I have nowhere to go back to.”
Not for the feint hearted this album as ‘Aimless’ far rips the paint of your walls, with screamo, dropped beats and a very melodic vocal in-between. One of the lead songs released ahead of the album is the awesome ‘W.T.F.’ A bit like a female fronted Muse jamming with Beartooth.
‘Impeccable’ will appeal to the electronic meets metal crowd and has an insanely catchy chorus and beat. An album break out hit if ever there was one.
Just when you think you have the measure of Calva Lousie they provide ‘Lo Que Vale’, which somehow sounds even more menacing sung in Spanish! On ‘The Abyss’ and ‘El Umbral’ the songs mix electro beats, with alt metal crunch and quieter, almost pop moments. The latter song goes through so many time & mood changes, yet never loses its addictive melody.
Calva Lousie have produced one of the albums of the year. Full of ideas, melody, metal crunch , cinematic soundscapes and certainly not afraid to jump genres in the course of any song. Stunning. ****1/2
