Holly Lerski is an emotive singer-songwriter whose craft is based round heartfelt lyrics, interwoven into subtle arrangements which bolster lyrical meaning and feel.

‘Greek Trilogy’ plays to her lyrical, musical and conceptual strengths, bringing clarity to deeply felt emotions.

Undoubtedly influenced by the younger Joni Mitchell, ‘Greek Trilogy’ is a love story in three parts plus two short narrations.

Pulled together as an EP and presented in the chronological order in which it was written, she extends the interrelationship between love and the joys of nature to be found on her previous ‘Sweet Decline’ travelogue album.

Here though, things feel a lot more personal.

There’s barely enough abstraction to circumvent the loaded ‘confessional’ singer-songwriter tag, but there’s enough musical excellence to fall back on the Nashville associated Americana term, while her previous lyrical naturalism is relegated two fleeting moments of sensual impressionistic narratives.

And while the two pieces acts as a conduit between the songs, they also offer a sense of light and shade in the middle of the emotive maelstrom of love songs and the redemptive qualities to be found in nature.

She opens with the metaphoric ‘Weeds’, a song about love and freedom. It’s given a hypnotic quality by her gently picked acoustic and the subtle supportive band interplay leading to a snappy chorus; “Be with me, We’ll grow like weeds in between our countries, Be with me We’ll grow like weeds spreading love and liberty.”

‘The Moon And The Sun’ has the kind of heavily accented Monophonics style rhythm guitar part to be found in contemporary soul records.

The Theremin sounding eerie backing and pulsing keyboard, is well suited to Holly’s Rickie Lee Jones style vocal phrasing.

The sluggish tempo gives the song a yearning quality suggesting lost love, but it’s also counterweighted by a feeling of self empowerment. This is musically reflected by an acute tension build and the Beatles style perfunctory ending to the song.

The second narration ‘The Wind Is In’ references Joni Mitchell’s ‘Carey’ from her 1971 ‘Blue’ album, a song also written in Crete, the very birthplace of this EP.

Both narrative inserts are an integral part of flow of an EP which feels as if it’s delivering salvation on the back of a gently rolling wave.

‘Chasing The Wild Geese’ opens with a heavily strummed Neil Young style acoustic and an animated vocal on a lovely resolving piece.

The uplifting music suggests an unwavering optimism, almost in spite of the hook line: “I’m chasing the wild geese, to Chattanooga.”

Rich in musical detail, a lovely combination of sludgy percussion and ethereal chiming tones underpin the integrity of another heartfelt song.

Holly Lerski consistently employs the kind of subtle, lyrical and musical lightness of touch which suggests she’s crying out to kindred spirits across the ages, because while the love stories might change, the universal emotions expressed here live on. ****
