Album review : MICHAEL SWEET – The Masterplan

Frontiers Music [Release date : 03.04.26]

The Masterplan is Michael Sweet’s tenth solo album.

He’s yet to surpass his largely ignored Truth album from year 2000 (4 stars from Allmusic, Cross Rhythms, and Hard Roxx), but this one might just do it.

It’s knee deep in powerful rock and religious themes, with the sensibility of orchestral music.

Sparkling strings and an acoustic guitar open the title track. The arrangement takes on weight as it progresses, musically and lyrically, becoming a quasi orchestral rock song.
It’s an instructive opener, setting out Sweet’s raison d’etre, a consistent theme throughout the album.

On their last few albums, Sweet’s band, Stryper, have spoken more openly about their religious beliefs, believing that metal and hard rock fans are a suitably open minded audience. That approach is reinforced here.

Musically, Sweet’s been impervious to outside influences over the years, but the evolution of rock culture has brought a more contemporary sound into his music. Not in a follower of fashion sense, but far more importantly, it embraces a broader musical palette without sacrificing any unique qualities.

His songs of faith and belief don’t significantly reassess his source material, but he certainly invests them with the emotion and passion of a true believer.

Song titles like ‘Faith’, ‘Lord’ and ‘You Lead I’ll Follow’ almost tell their own story, as Sweet leads us confidently through his own personal spiritual journey.

Elsewhere, the dazzling grace of ‘Eternally’, the grit and gold of ‘Believer’ and the tuneful, highly accessible rock of ‘I Will Follow You’ are, in their own way, fiercely dramatic.

That said, ‘Desert Stream’ is the album’s standout track… a track with a big mainstream rock production.

Sweet’s voice swoops and soars, as a golden gospel choir zooms in and out of orbit, delivering the message, leaning on a familiar metaphor that gives the song a welcome emotional heft.

This cannot have been an easy album to make.

Sweet’s own words:
“The goal is to inspire and encourage and give people hope. I hope this one does just that. I want to personally thank you all for your patience and for your undying support for everything that I do.”
