Album review: BILLY MORRISON – Hollow

Billy Idol’s rhythm guitarist Billy Morrison has been carving out a successful solo career, including hit singles on the US mainstream rock charts with Ozzy Osbourne on ‘Crack Cocaine’, and again with Ozzy and Steve Stevens on ‘Gods of Rock n Roll’. Morrison’s last album, 2024’s ‘The Morrison Project’, was a guest heavy affair as is this new one. You’ve got the likes of Steve Stevems, Marilyn Manson, Body Count’s Chuck D and The Offspring’s Dexter Holland all appearing on Hollow.

‘Becoming’, which features Godsmack’s Sully Erna on vocals and Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt, was released as the first single. A neat modern rocker with plenty of guitar heft. The title track is another riff heavy rocker and a highlight on the album, especially the guitar solo. Love it!

‘No Suspects’ is a snarling rap metal song with Chuck D, B-Real and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels all appearing on the song. One of the album’s stand outs.

For a little bit of country, Duff McKagan brings his talents to bear on ‘Leave No Trace’. The one song that possibly sounds out of place on the album but it warrants its place given the song’s strength.

The Offspring’s Dexter Holland pops up on the punk pop-tastic ‘Never Gonna Change’. If you like your punk US flavoured and circa the noughties, you’ll love this tune.

‘Tearing Down the Walls’ is not unlike latter day Gary Numan with its electro and guitar musical mix. The album does have an underlying alt metal vibe, with melody, riffs and guitar solos always at the forefront.

I know its Billy Morrison singing on ‘Forgive Me’, but he doesn’t half sound like Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott at times! Decent song too and yes, it has another top draw guitar solo.

The album closes with the ballad ‘Butterfly Effect’, and it does sound like it was perhaps written with Ozzy in mind to sing it. Or maybe even Robbie Williams given the song’s cinematic feel and lyrical content.

Despite the number of guest musicians involved it has a cohesive feel, thanks to Billy Morrison’s vocals and guitar riffs. Enjoyable listening and crank it up! ***1/2
