Eternal. On being sent this I thought ‘why am I being asked to something by Eternal? Aren’t they a British pop act featuring Jamie Redknapp’s wife?’ Ah, no. THIS Eternal are a Greek four piece, hailing from the massive underground thrash movement in Athens. I was lucky enough to be in Greece a coupe of months ago (‘yeah Chris, we’re really interested in hearing about your holiday’-Ed) and the movement there, and their love of metal in general, is really noticeable. For example, I did not expect to be walking down a main street and see graffiti of the Diamond Head logo, nor ‘Exodus’ spray painted randomly outside an electrical goods store. They really do love their graffiti in Athens!

Anyway, unlike our pop poppets, this lot thrash. But they shouldn’t be pigeon-holed, as this one is as much for the post punk crowd as the thrashers. There’s some real anger here, but also a playfulness, such as the ‘ladies and gentlemen please take your seats’ intro to ‘Theater Of Thrash’. You get the feeling they’re also having fun with this, and despite obvious influences don’t just want to stay in the genre of unreadable group logos.

Structurally there’s a wealth of the usual riff-vocal-solo- style inherent in it’s lineage, but also some unusual, almost prog-like timings. But what really impresses is the drums of Alex Archaniotis, not just Lars-lite like so many thrash bands, but given the genre he’s not just playing as fast as he can, trying to impress, but there’s an almost metronomic precision to his playing. Check out the excellent ‘No Escape’ for proof. His drums build, and yeah he can do the intricate fills, but he’s leading the line. Again, and I don’t want to harp on with soundalikes, but think ‘A Matter Of Life And Death’ era Iron Maiden, which was to all intents and purposes Nicko’s album, driving the direction of each song.

Album Cover wise this is pure early ’80′s post punk, think Charged GBH ‘City By Attacked By Rats’ (look it up), and musically there’s some real punk attitude. For example, ‘Bloodspill’ has elements of The Ruts, while ‘Adreniline Rush’ gives vibes of angry Scottish punks The Exploited. Whether these are true or just coincidence I have absolutely no idea, but the excitement and the energy are certainly evident. Lyrically too there’s a societal conscience, something common among young Greek thrash bands, with ant-war themes clashing with just how they see the World, but also just about being, well, METAL.

My one worry is will they be able to replicate this live? The album is brilliantly produced, not too heavy- which might sound mad given how, well, heavy the album is- but given all their local competition they’ll need to replicate this on stage, which I hope is possible. One thing I do know is that I’d really love to find out. ****
