Cherry Red [Release date : 23.10.26]
The use of occult and satanic themes (and symbols) by the Thrash Metal fraternity eventually became commonplace.
They were largely meaningless of course, purely a hook and an image on which to hang powerful and challenging metal material.
And yet, None Shall Defy, released in 1989 by Canadian Thrash Metal band, Infernal Majesty, contains a bunch of melodramatic, intelligently written (if lurid) essays on the subject of good and evil. “To stand against evil means you stand alone” (Overlord), and “lifeless emissaries of evil” (Night Of The Living Dead), are good examples.
Musically, tracks like ‘R.I.P.’ and ‘S.O.S.’ are perfectly calibrated maelstroms of NWOBHM, fuelled by the aggression of hardcore punk.
‘Path Of The Psyco’ and ‘Hell On Earth’ make much use of crashing chords and lurching riffs, shaded by the dissonant churn of downtuned guitars, and tough, unrelenting rhythms.
The title track and ‘Skeletons In The Closet’ best showcase the band’s twin axe attack, the use of speed and repetition, and shouty, dramatic vocals.
The album carries with it a fine reputation.
It was reissued in 1998, to such acclaim that the band reformed, after disbanding in 1990.
And so None Shall Defy is again resurrected, this time by the Cherry Red label with new artwork and definitive liner notes. It’s further complemented by a brand new interview with the band’s original vocalist, Chris Bailey, who provides an in-depth insight into one of Thrash Metal’s most enduring albums.
Die hard collectors will love this. ****
