Album review : DEGREED – The Leftovers

Frontiers [Release date 18.07.25]

Only a year after their last full length studio album, Public Address, Degreed now release The Leftovers, a 9 track EP.

The title is self explanatory, but there’s a negative connotation there, hinting that these tracks maybe weren’t good enough to make the cut in 2023.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Degreed seem naturally wired to make the right musical decisions. So maybe these songs, singular in their approach to modern melodic rock, just didn’t fit.

Opener, ‘If It Wasn’t For Me’, heavily influenced by American AOR, is a glorious piece of music, magnifying all the standard ingredients, big sound, depth, width, glossy, slick, and best of all, a pulse quickening chorus.

It’s easy to dwell on this track, replaying it a time or two before moving on. There’s a lot of sound for just four guys – Robin Erikkson (b/v); Matt Erikkson, drums; Mikael Blanc, keys, and Daniel Johansson, guitar.

The next two tracks have the same effect. Both slices of exciting urban rock. A driving, relentless energy runs through ‘Good Enough’ and ‘Love Your Enemy’ like an electric current, highly charged, powered up, each reaching the hooky pop heights of hit making boybands.

The poppy undertones persist as we move through the album.

The big ballad, ‘Hard To Be Human’s cultivated production and layered arrangement create the romanticised soundscape intended, neatly teeing up the bonus track, a synthwave version of ‘This Is Love’, an immersive, eighties’ sensory experience. Johnny Hates Jazz eat your heart out.

And let’s not forget ‘Wildchild’ a metallised, shouty, frantic, earthy homage to the respected Children Of Bodom guitarist, Alexi Laiho, who died in 2020, aged 41. RIP. ***1/2
