Album review : NIGHT RANGER Best Of

Frontiers Music [Release date : 28.08.26]

Quintessential white middle class rock band from the past, Night Ranger continues to make great melodic rock music in the present.

Meantime, this remastered, retrospective collection might satisfy the band’s fans and more. It reflects on the increasing populism of radio pop and rock in the eighties, and indeed the increasing popularity of Night Ranger through those years to the present day.

The band was a major influence on the emergent LA rock scene. The secret of their success largely emanated from the strength of the songwriting. Jack Blades, Kelly Keaggy and Brad Gillis would write together in various combinations, sometimes sailing solo.

And today, together with relative new boys, Kerri Kelly and Eric Levy, it’s a tight tight team, still rocking in America, and just about to embark on a nationwide tour.

The biggies that introduce the album are like an underlying soundtrack to the era. Echoes of the moment are coursing through the veins of ‘Don’t Tell Me You Love Me’, ‘Sister Christian’, ‘When You Close Your Eyes’ and ‘Four In The Morning’. The songs had that driving, relentless energy that seeps into your consciousness. And, remastered, they have an extra zing.

A selection of choice cuts follow, taken from 4 of the band’s studio albums on Frontiers, from the years 2007 to 2022.

They range from the exciting generational rock of ‘Breakout’, ‘No Time To Lose’ and ‘Growing Up In California’, through the Beatlish ‘Tomorrow’ and the Night Ranger-channels-Weezer, ‘High Road’, to the slow tempo cinematic affairs ‘Time Of Our Lives’ and ‘Only For You Only’. It’s a compelling journey.

‘Wasted Time’ the single from 2022’s “Record Stores Day” and a neat cover of Jose Feliano’s eternal Christmas hit ‘Feliz Navidad’ both get tagged on as bonus tracks. Good deal. ****
