Album review: EDEN’S CURSE – Symphony of Sin

Eden's Curse - Symphony Of Sin

AFM Records www.afmrecords.de

Eden’s Curse return with their fourth album, Symphony of Sin, after a difficult two year period with a new vocalist (Serbian Nikola Mijic) and a new keyboard player (former Power Quest member Steve Williams) in tow. Founding member and vocalist Michael Eden quit the band back in October 2011 after ranting on publically about money issues which left founding members Paul Logue (bass), Thorsten Koehne (guitar) and Pete Newdeck (drums) singer-less.

Initial replacement vocalist Italian Marco Sandon lasted only 6 months leaving in September 2012 and after a long search Nikola Mijic was finally appointed in July 2013…but that is all water under the bridge as Eden’s Curse finally return with their updated brand of melodic metal.

Personally I cannot compare this new incarnation with the old one as I never got around to listening to them before but I can say that Symphony of Sin is one impressive sounding release. In Nikola Mijic they have unearthed a superb vocalist in a Myles Kennedy/James LaBrie sort of mould. Production is faultless as to be expected from Dennis Ward (of Pink Cream 69 fame) and the instrumentation cannot be faulted. Now to the songs…

Things kick off in full overblown symphonic metal mode with the epic title track featuring a 46 piece orchestra. The track, like many others, has an early Dream Theater feel with a splash of Alter Bridge and Pink Cream 69 melody thrown into the mix.

Evil and Divine is the lead single (check out the video on youtube) and features Dio-like lyrics married to a commercial melodic rock backing – the evil vocals on the bridge are a nice touch…”watch the angels fall from the skies above…”

Unbreakable is oddly described as “pop metal” in the biography but it is the closest thing to a chart friendly PC69 tune on the album. Most songs require a little bit of patience to fully appreciate the intricacies of the song writing but you will be rewarded with some wonderful melodic metal numbers including the majestic Sign of the Cross.

It’s also good to see proper album artwork as well…Eve from the debut album is back playing her cello in the approaching storm.

Eden’s Curse have removed their curse of recent years and bounced back with a class product and a vocalist that can take them onwards and upwards.  ****
