Album review: THE PIERCES – Creation
Polydor [Release date 01.09.14]
Sisters Allison and Catherine Pierce were on the verge of calling it a day when Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman came calling and offered to produced their chart topping You And I (2011) – an album that captured perfectly the girls ‘summer of love’ vocal harmonies and matched them to a set full of glorious pop melodies. It was as faultless as when Belinda Carlisle announced that heaven was a place on earth back in the 1980s.
Up until that that time the band’s output over three albums had been patchy, but promising, and had failed to catch the public’s imagination to any degree. But Berryman saw the potential and You & I was an undisputed triumph on just about every level.
Sadly, without Berryman on board, their follow up Creation is a return to pre-You and I form. The superb single ‘Kings’ aside, the material here simply doesn’t match up to the giddy heights Berryman guided the band to. In fact, it’s probably on a par with Thirteen Tales Of Love And Revenge (2007) as their weakest album release to date.
In view of their stop-start history, you’d have thought the girls would be grateful for wider promotion (outside the usual indie/pop/folk circles) but we couldn’t secure passes to their current tour. One suspects a slow (?) decline into obscurity and beyond is now almost inevitable. Disappointing. **1/2
