VITRUVIAN MAN – The Stranger Within

Prog metal all the way from Melbourne, Australia. This is the debut album from Vitruvian Man and has been a couple of years in the making. The band claim a wide range of influences including, prog rock, metal and jazz fusion and you can hear elements of all across the album.
The album starts on a heavy note with ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ which contains complex rhythms and time changes by the dozen. This theme is continued through the rest of the 7 tracks on the album and will be familiar to anyone who has listened to Porcupine Tree or Dream Theater. Musically the band certainly know what their way around their chosen instruments especially bass guitarist Johnny Glovasa who obviously has a few Rush records in his collection as there are Geddy Lee trademark bass flurries on most tracks.
I enjoyed this album, but it’s not one that would have me hitting the repeat button, but maybe that’s just me. There are some flashes of brilliance here, but overall this is a decent prog metal affair at best. Impressive, but not essential.
