Album review: DANZIG – Skeletons

DANZIG – Skeletons

AFM Records [Release date 27.11.15]

“Skeletons” is Glenn Danzig’s first studio release since “Deth Red Saboath” back in 2010 and it is an album of covers of songs that have influenced his career.

The songs were supposedly recorded at various times between 2012 and 2015 in Los Angeles but it is possible some were recorded earlier.

Danzig have always been a bit of an acquired taste…and to me one that I did not like. “Skeletons” unfortunately doesn’t change my opinion at all…

Devil’s Angels, from the 1967 biker movie of the same name, kicks things off and sounds absolutely awful…sounds like it was recorded on an old tape recorder that was buried in mud. Things don’t improve with Satan, from the 1969 biker movie “Satan’s Sadists”…the bass and guitar are buried in the mix, the drums are harsh and the vocals just bad.

Danzig then does his “best” Elvis impression on Let Yourself Go. Sabbath’s classic N.I.B. then goes under the knife and actually survives reasonably intact apart from an awful guitar solo. Others bands slaughtered include Aerosmith, The Troggs and The Litter.

The one bright spot on here is a cover of ZZ Top’s Rough Boy (the only 1980’s track on here) which I never liked in its original form…Glenn has slowed it down and given it a cool groove.

The closing Crying In The Rain (The Everly Brothers) is the oddball on here…it’s just Glenn backed by a piano, guitar and tympani…very hollow sounding and creepy.

Glenn might have enjoyed singing his versions of songs that meant a lot to him but why did he have to make everyone else listen to them! Production on here is non-existent…sounds like it was recorded in a garage…

“Skeletons” should come with a warning sticker stating “For Fans Only”.

Generally painful listening!
