Folkwit Records (Released 5th November)
From Bristol the band neither have a member called Joyce or have been librarians, but they have produced a very enjoyable debut album that neatly mixes folk and indie musical influences. It is a mix of older, reworked songs (they have released an EP to date) and newer material.
What won me over was there clever use of instruments to flesh out acoustic tunes such as ‘Maurice Ward’ that adds flugelhorn to the cello and violin used on most of the songs. ‘Communion’ features a haunting female vocal and really is something quite out of the ordinary. Very spooky (made more so with the cello/violin) but wonderful all at the same time.
The single ‘Follow Me, I’m Right Behind You’ taps into the classic sound of Simon & Garfunkel on the harmonies, with a jaunty backing. ‘Turn Yourself In’ is another possible single release, proving this band have the indie folk sound to a tee. Expect big things from this band with an impressive debut like this one.
