Album review: RICH ROBINSON – Flux

Eagle Rock Entertainment [Release date 24.06.16]

Following on from his recent re-issue campaign comes the release of ‘Flux’- the 4th solo studio album from former Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson, and in my mind, his best solo effort to date.

Tight but loose in the same way that the Stones were in the early ‘70’s, the album is a great blend of blues, Americana and good feeling rock n  roll. Opening track ‘The Upstairs Land’ (and proceeding track ‘Shipwrecked’) could be the Black Crowes, ‘Which Way Your Wind Blows’ is a bluesy track with shades of Led Zeppelin whilst ‘Time To Leave’ has more than a passing nod to Tom Petty .

‘Flux’ also has a gentler side to it and tracks like ‘Life’ and ‘Ides of Nowhere’ are great examples of this with their slower, almost Americana feel to them. ‘For To Give’ is another and has a real Crowes like feeling about it. A song that really lives up to its title is ‘Music That Will Lift Me’ as there is some great guitar work going on here.

Other highlights include ‘Eclipse The Night’, ‘Everything’s Alright’ and ‘Sleepwalker’ but, to be fair, there are no weak moments across the 13 tracks on ‘Flux’.

As it looks like we have to get used to the idea that there will be no Black Crowes reunion any time soon, if at all, it is great to see that Rich Robinson will keep producing albums as rich and soulful as ‘Flux’ as this will do me just fine.  ****1/2
