Album review: AIRBOURNE – Breakin’ Outta Hell

AIRBOURNE – Breakin’ Outta Hell

Spinefarm Records [Release date 23.09.16]

AC/DC are no more. Regardless of what Angus Young may say with the departure of Macolm Young, Brian Johnson and now Cliff Williams, the AC/DC we know and love are dead. This then throws down the gauntlet for the next generation of hard rockers to step up to the mark. Airbourne not only take up the gauntlet, they don it and punch you squarely in the face, hard!

Breakin’ Outta Hell is an unapologetic hard rocking romp. The pace is relentless and the subject matter covers all bases, drinking, woman, fighting and loud music. Title track ‘Breakin’ Outta Hell’ opens proceedings and it’s like a musical hand grenade going off. Joel O’Keefe fires in all strings blazing and barking out his vocals like the devil is on his tail.

‘Rivalry’ follows and if this song is not a wrestling anthem within a few weeks I will be most surprised, it feels like you have gone ten rounds in the ring by the closing chords. The band have perfected the knack of writing a catchy chorus which you can scream along to after one listen making each track easily accessible and, above all, memorable.

‘It’s Never Too Loud For Me’ could be Airbourne’s strapline, it is certainly a song that is destined to be a live favourite. Another one that I can see firmly ensconced in future setlists is ‘Thin The Blood’, a drinking anthem of the highest calibre, I can already see the beer flying during this number.

The band enter Steel Panther territory on a couple of occasions on the album with the tracks ‘Down On You’ and ‘Do Me Like You Do Yourself’. ‘Down On You’ in particular doesn’t leave much to the imagination!

Over the past few years Airbourne have established themselves as one of the most entertaining bands in rock, especially with their riotous live shows. This album is packed with sweat, blood and attitude and rocks to its very core.

The old masters may be dying off but the new breed are in rude health and spoiling for a fight, bring it on!  ****
