Amy Thatcher is a professional accordionist based in the North East of England. She has built up a reputation as one of the UK’s leading folk accordionists, both as a performer and composer, working with fellow musicians such as Kathryn Tickell, Sting and The Royal Northern Sinfonia, The Shee and Monster Ceilidh Band.
Prior to this EP she released her debut album in 2019 and more music is planned for next year, as well as touring with the Shee.
All four songs on here are written by Amy and each one has its own unique sound & character. ‘Look At You Know’ is an intriguing mix of a piano/synth riff with her accordion playing. ‘Nee Msuette, Pet’ is a jaunty wee number, possibly the most trad folk tune on the EP. ‘The Unheard’ is dedicated to those who don’t endlessly shout or share on social media. Liking the added birds tweeting – perhaps a nod to a popular social platform?
‘Finn’s Reel’ is a corking mix of accordion and modern dance beats, sure to have the traditional folkie spilling their tankard of home brew down their arran sweater of choice, yet for everyone else one of those fine examples of how folk music can fit seamlessly into another musical genre. The only song to feature another musician as Joe Trusswell adds electronics and drums. A real highlight on a very strong set of tunes.
It is easy to see why Amy Thatcher is in such demand as she has a rare talent of taking her accordion playing into musical places it is rarely seen or heard. ****
