Album review: POCO – The Sony/BMG A’s and B’s

BGO Records [Release date 31.03.23]
Poco were the nearly-men of country rock and whilst achieving a modicum of chart success in their early incarnation are perhaps better known for supplying luminaries to other bands. Enter (or exit) Timothy B. Schmit and Randy Meisner.
This collection brings together the singles they cut for, initially, Epic (between 1969 and 1974 ) and then RCA when they reconstituted in 1989. And, in the case of ‘My Kind Of Love’ and ‘Hard Luck’ those songs only ever appeared on a single.
Following the departure of Schmit to the Eagles in 1977 the band reconvened with a new bassist and drummer who – together with Paul Cotton, Rusty Young and George Grantham – experienced their greatest period of commercial success with the album ‘Legend’.
However this period is not included on this compilation because it misses out when they were signed to ABC-Dunhill between 1975-1978.
In 1989, now signed to RCA, the band released ‘Legacy’ which reunited the original band members. Three singles were released from that album and are included here.
Those who wish to explore further may be better served by exploring the various reissues/remasters available from BGO. This is something of an uneven collection of Poco material and the sleeve notes are a direct lift off Wikipedia. Shameful. ***
