EP Review: BRAVE RIVAL – 5 to 4

Its been a year of change in the Brave Rival camp with the departure of Chloe Josephine, one of the twin lead singers that helped make their sound so distinctive. Given their incessant touring activity, there is a good chance you will have seen the remaining four band members plough forward and leave their blues roots behind for a more out-and-out rock sound, accelerating a process that in my view was already well under way.

Yet they have still found time to write songs in their preferred new style and even though the excellent ‘Fight or Flight’ album was only released last September with some bonus tracks dropping around Christmas time, they have been released in a new EP, the very literally titled ‘5 to 4’.

Opener ‘Let Me Rock And Roll’ also gives clues in the title and the opening riff from Ed’ The Shred’ Clarke is impressive while singer Lindsey Bonnick spits out in feisty style some splenetic lyrics about someone who has wronged her. There is a fine instrumental section where a bass run goes into a fiery guitar solo above that riff.

‘Poison’, already released as a single, boasts another catchy, and naggingly familiar, riff, along with ‘hey heys’ in the background during the bridge, while Lindsey’s voice soars, almost into symphonic metal mode at one time.

Sandwiched between a quartet of brisk modern sounding songs is something completely different in the near eight minute ‘Try Again’. The early stages of the song have an ethereal, folky feel, yet Ed’s slide playing is all over the song contributing to some almost gothic atmospherics. With no proof, I wouldn’t mind guessing that the band’s resident Zeppelin fan, bassist Billy Dedman was a key creative force here.

‘Control’ boasts some frantic and fast paced riffing, with some cathartic screams from Lindsey during another angry lyric about a failed relationship. However the Evanescence- style sound  may have some of the blues purists among their original audience choking.

‘Wild Child’ is another melodic hard rocker with some staccato riffing and a fine guitar solo, while Donna Peters beats out the sort of drum rhythms that the Black Keys made popular a few years ago. It’s a good example of how the new songs have a fresh contemporary feel rather than retread retro production values.

For anyone discombobulated by the new style, they are good enough to offer more traditional versions of three of the songs. Acoustic versions of ‘Control’ and ‘Poison’ demonstrate how well they stand up as songs in their own right and show off Lindsey’s vocals at their finest. Finally ‘Wild Child’ is reinterpreted in a vintage Chicago-style blues, possibly as an insurance policy against any of the blues industry wanting their many baubles back?

While the shift in musical style may not be to the liking of the latter, they are sure to pick up new followers with this very effective launch of the next phase of their career.   **** 1/4

BRINSLEY SCHWARZ - Shouting At The Moon

Brinsley Schwarz emerged from the pub rock boom of the early 1970s. They will be best remembered for their infamous press junket in 1970 and a disastrous US debut.

Oh, how times change. ‘Shouting At The Moon’ is the third solo album from Brinsley Schwarz (the man not the band) following ‘Unexpected’ in 2016 and ‘Tangled’ in 2021.

The album’s best tracks emit a soulful groove. ‘What In The World’ pays its dues to Steely Dan with Schwarz’s clipped guitar notes doing a passable Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter impression whilst ‘The Chance’ offers a similar musical lineage.

‘Falling Over Backwards’ continues the cool Rhodes/Hammond configuration (courtesy, another Graham Parker acolyte, James Hallawell). The laid back feel evoking the likes of a Snowy White or Robben Ford.

Like the album as a whole, ‘Nothing Is What It Seems’ has its roots in the late-1970s but now with the spectre of Dire Straits who also emerged from the later pub scene but became stadium rockers. This was perhaps the biggest differentiator: the pub rockers made music to get pissed to without much wider aspiration and punk largely moved into that space.

‘Watch The Moon Come Down’ (a Parker original), ‘Maybe One Day’ and ‘It’s Been A Long Year’ offer some respite from “the groove”. It’s as if there was a conscious doff of the stetson to the more thoughtful pop and tunesmithery characterising Schwarz’s earlier outings and epitomised by the likes of Squeeze. ***1/2

Album review: ROOMFUL OF BLUES – Steppin Out!

‘Steppin’ Out!’ is Roomful of Blues’ first studio album for 5 years and their 28th release in all, incuding live and compilation albums.

It’s essentially a re-calibration of their core values, as they musically take us out on a metaphoric night on the town, led by new singer vocalist D.D.Bastos.

Over 50 band members have passed through the ranks since they started in 1967 and vocalist Bastos breaks new ground by being the first female vocalist to record with them, though she ‘s not the first woman to front band as she was preceded by Lou Ann Barton who sang live, but did not record.

Co-founded by the guitarist Duke Robillard and pianist Al Copley, Roomful Of blues quickly shifted from being a guitar driven Chicago blues band to becoming a musically expanding umbrella, incorporating all colours of the blues from their boogie, swing and rock and roll antecedents to r&b and soul in a horn-driven jump band.

Much like the similar efforts of the late Otis Grand in the UK, they established a durability based on being unique big band blues practitioners.

The duo left in the midst of time, but the band’s integrity lives on, as they bring their trademark big band horn sound to bear on 14 well chosen covers.

The album opens with the rumba inflected and Afro-Latino rhythms of ‘Satisfied’, on which Bastos’s initial introduction as new vocalist is short, as guitarist Chris Vachon solos early,

The attention to rhythmic detail lies at the heart of an album full of challenging arrangements which bring out the best in both vocalist and band members alike.

Listen for example, to their version of Big Maybelle’s ‘I’ve Got A Feelin’, which is arguably the perfect song for the band.

Covered back 20 years ago by Candye Kane, here it’s transformed into a whirl of compelling rhythms and horns, while still leaving plenty of room for D.D.’s expressive phrasing.

She shines on the staccato arrangement of ‘Please Don’t Leave Me’ and the soft brush strokes and trumpet inflected ‘Tend To Your Business,’ while the stop-time horn heavy ‘Good Rockin’ Daddy’ – always a good barometer of a band’s swing credentials –  finds her attacking the song with gusto, surrounded by uncredited bv’s.

The refreshing thing about this album is the way the band showcases the musical genres that inspired the original members.

‘Steppin’ Up In Class’ for example, features a greasy swampy foundation for some declaratory phrasing, alongside Chris Vachon’s sinewy guitar solo and Rich Lataille gritty sax.

They crank things up again on ‘Well Oh Well’ with some intuitive band interplay, sparkling solos and another confident vocal, the very elements that also gives the lead promo track ‘You Were Wrong’ such a significant impact.

There’s also smart choice of a Buddy Johnson’s ‘Why Don’t Cha Stop It’, taken as a languid shuffle on a less-is-more outing.

However, not everything hits the spot, as ‘Slippin And Slidin’ doesn’t have the same impact despite some gutsy solos, mainly because it gathers momentum too late into the fade, while Smiley Lewis’s ‘Dirty People’ doesn’t fit Bastos’s exuberant vocal style, but it does feature some lyrical piano and stinging guitar breaks.

No matter, the aptly titled ‘Boogie’s The Thing’ closes out a fine album with a flurry of trademark energy, bounce, and swing, drawing us into the kind of music that founder member Al Copley viewed as a catalyst to a “participatory universe.”

Suffice it to say, this album is successfully shot through with the same ideal. ****

Album review: PAVLOV’S DOG – Wonderlust

As we’ve indicated elsewhere, reviewing the 5-CD retrospective, Pavlov’s Dog have never received the success they might deserve and never sustaining the acclaimed heights (and large sign-up fee) of their debut album released in 1974.

‘Wonderlust’ is the band’s latest venture and follows 2018′s ‘Prodigal Dreamer’ with pretty much the same line-up. The main fillip is the continuing contribution of violinist Abbie Steiling who is also credited as co-producer and orchestral arranger. And she pays tribute to the band’s original violinist on the standout instrumental ‘Calling Sigfried’.

David Surkamp’s vocal approach has mellowed somewhat so not so much of a distraction. Here he sounds like a more impassioned Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople) whilst there’s the Bowie-tinged ‘Solid Water, Liquid Sky’.

The band have variously been described as progressive, AOR, or pop prog. ‘Wonderlust’ is simply chocked full of solid tunes and I wouldn’t call it anything but well-produced pop rock.

‘Jet Black Cadillac’ and ‘Mona’ are good examples, excellent ensemble pieces with Abbie Steiling’s weaving violin a highlight and Phil Ring doing his best Lindsay Buckingham impression on the former. ‘Can’t Stop The Hurt’ is catchy riff-driven rock.

The string quartet add a wistful quality to ‘Another Blood Moon’ and ‘I Wait For You’, one of three songs co-written by Surkamp and his co-founder Doug Rayburn (who died in 2012).

‘I Told You So’ has various elements evoking Supertramp, Caravan and Tull and therefore re-establishing those pop prog credentials.  ‘Canadian Rain’ suddenly moves up a notch with an unexpected slap bass solo from Rick Steiling.

All in all, after a seven-year recording hiatus and a somewhat uneven history, Pavlov’s Dog may have at last found their true mojo. ****

What are we to make of a fairly basic box set from a band that have been described as “legendary” but who – this side of the pond – have largely gone unnoticed?

‘Essential Recordings’ is certainly a great introduction with key releases in facsimilie sleeves but sadly lacking an informative booklet or lyric sheet (so a star docked for that). For completists, the inclusion of the 2010 album ‘Echo & Boo’ would have been useful too.

The sole survivor of the band is mainman/ co-founder David Surkamp. And here I think lies the conundrum. Surkamp is evidently a talented musician but his vocals are an acquired taste and sadly – for these ears – taint and dominate everything. Think a more extreme version of the UK Mr.Big’s Dicken. In places he sounds like Geddy Lee on steroids or Roger Chapman on a bad night.

Musically Pavlov’s Dog are on the money and with a different vocalist their debut Pampered Menial would indeed be a pop prog classic. With mellotron orchestration (courtesy of co-founder Douglas Rayburn) very much of its time but in a good way.

The band blended hard rock figures, classical and folk influences aligning them in equal measures with bands like Kansas and Styx with a pop sensibility that evidently attracted big labels like ABC Dunhill and then Columbia.

The debut was produced by Sandy Pearlman (who worked with Blue Oyster Cult) and early demos (not included in this box set) came out in 2011 as ‘The Pekin Tapes’.

But they never actually achieved great success in their homeland and therefore probably remained as something of an acquired taste.  And now, a cult phenomena.

The debut and the band’s follow-up At The Sound Of The Bell (1976) had poor sales and so Columbia shelved third album Has Anyone Here Seen Sigfried? (A reference to their original violinist). This now appears with 9 bonus (mainly live) tracks although this edition previously released in 2007 (and before that heavily bootlegged). By the way, that second album had a stellar line-up of guest artists including Bill Bruford, Michael Brecker and Elliot Randall.

The band imploded in 1977 and it wasn’t until 1990 they returned with a one-off effort Lost In America. This disc has eight unreleased live tracks recorded between 1990 and 2006 but this set again previously issued in 2007. Perhaps a minor point but the source of the live recordings does not agree with information on the earlier release.

Lost In America is the best of the five CDs here with Surkamp’s vocal a tad more bearable and with a late-1980s synth-driven feel. The excellent ‘A Hardly Innocent Mind’ is one of several with Michelle Isam’s contribution on sax (and also backing vocals on ‘Don’t Rain On Me’). Best filed with early 1990s “neo-prog” and stylistically some distance from the earlier output.

That album title is quite appropriate because the band didn’t re-emerge until June 2004 for a 30th anniversary gig.

This box set is rounded out with 2018′s Prodigal Dreamer. This reintroduced a violinist to the main line-up.  By this time Surkamp was the only surviving original member and is joined by his partner Sara and with another husband/wife duo Abbie Steiling (violin) and Rick Steiling (bass). All remain in the current line-up who released a new album ‘Wonderlust’ in October 2025.

If you can get past that vibrato vocal, worth a punt. ***

EP review: JIMMY OWEN – 10Ft Squared

‘10Ft Squared’ is the perfect introduction to Jimmy Owen, a guitar driven, singer-songwriter and restless artistic spirit, who straddles prog, fusion, Californian tinged soft rock, pop and unexpectedly the blues.

It’s a mini album or EP if you prefer,  full of twists and turns which explores a unique aesthetic, spanning eerie tones, poetic lyrics, real feel and occasional deep grooves.

The exploratory approach means it isn’t until the last track – the suitably titled ’Meant To Be’ – that he reverts to his previous Wolf Moon musical persona.

Driven by Erik Stams’s insistent shuffled percussion, the track gives the EP a melodic finish.

Owen’s gentle vocal just about rises above the band accompaniment and his own chiming guitars, on a song carried by a west coast sweep and shot through with Eric Johnson influenced tremulous guitar work.

The 6 track musical journey opens with a nod to David Gilmour (and fleetingly Steve Hillage in its spicier moments), and is never too far removed from an Eric Johnson fusion influence.

In between the Gilmour/Johnson axis, there’s much to admire, including the truly outstanding cover of ‘Wichita Lineman’.

Jimmy nails a career best vocal and adds a magical solo on a beautifully arranged track that seeks to voice the inexpressible and comes close!

It’s a brave step to try and capture the essence of a haunting, and some might say, a sad, and profound love song, but he triumphs on his own terms, in a case of: “Owen spinning his own Webb!”

‘Wichita Lineman’ is anchored by a lovely understated rhythmic accompaniment from Erik Stams on drums and Noah Nelson on bass, while Owen makes his guitar tone ache, weep and moan along with some luscious slide.

And when he reaches the iconic line “I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time”, he pours all his accumulated emotion into a subsequent defining guitar solo that reaches for the stars.

The opening ethereal title track features some Gimour style guitar over a synth generated wall of sound. It flows into intricately woven guitar lines, on a slowly evolving progression which acts as an overture.

He switches to Eric Johnson mode on ‘Everybody Needs A Hero’, which is a maelstrom of contrasting tones and organ driven energy, leading to some belated crunching riffage and another sudden void.

And as you dig deeper into the EP, you get the feeling that Owen is subtly unravelling his musical armoury, particularly so on a reworked version of his March released single ‘Plastic Fruit (Re-imagined)’.

Buoyed by a lovely acoustic-into-electric wash full of jangling tones and a post Nick Drake vocal, he conjures up an impressionistic piece, neatly tied up in some poetic lyrics and uplifting music: Just stay with me here a while,  Beauty can′t blind you from afar, So hold that desire in your heart, A lie don’t always need the truth, Those trees bare plastic fruit.”

The song finishes with a quasi mission statement: “Hear my words, Do what you can, Avoid the herd.”

He does precisely that by pursuing a 70’s west coast feel, shot through with fusion guitar which melts into a beautifully nuanced outro, on a trademark Jimmy Owen finish.

He broadens his musical palette on ‘Time And Time Again’, a muscular blues outing featuring special guest Lindsey Bonnick (late of Brave Rival), who works hard to nail emotive feel.

A combination of an opening heavy-duty guitar figure and additional voicings,  plus Bonnick’s animated vocals over cool bv’s almost clutters the track, until it drops down for an angular guitar solo and an Emily Francis B3 solo.

Everything bubbles up nicely into a second solo featuring a piercingly phased Zappa-esque tone which edgily evokes the fractured relationship lyrical narrative.

Jimmy Owen’s ’10 Ft Squared’ is a well conceived, emotionally charged and superbly played release, and represents an important step forward for a technically gifted guitarist with songs on his mind. ****

Album review: THE RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS – X’s For Eyes

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, since their formation in the early 2000s, has carved a unique space in the alternative rock scene. With the release of their new album it’s clear the band has continued to evolve, building on the foundations laid by their earlier work.

Their journey from the raw energy of “Don’t You Fake It” to their current sound showcases a willingness to explore new territories, while still retaining elements that resonate with longtime fans.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus I have to say, has been one of the solid bands of my teens. Even to this day “Face Down” is an anthem that is a staple in most emo playlists and undeniably holds a special place.

Released during a time when discussions around domestic violence were not as prevalent, the song’s powerful message connected with a wide audience. Its impact can be seen in the numerous stories shared by listeners who found solace and strength in its lyrics, solidifying its place as a pivotal song in the band’s career to this day. I’m hoping that this album has the same impact.

Let’s dive in!

I was immediately taken on a nostalgia trip and it felt like I was 17 again! The tone and vocals have not changed one bit. Still filled with explosively emotive lyrics that are quintessential and the pop punk/emo vibe with the tracks tempo.

Straight off the bat with the first track “Always the King” there is a metal edge and it’s really gritty. The lyrics are catchy and powerful. A really strong start. The added addition of “Kellin Quinn” on the vocals makes this one hell of an album opener.

The pace ups with a true pop punk accompaniment for “Purple Halo” anyone who was a teen in the early 2000s will be familiar with this type of sound.

Dropping the pace down a notch with “Perfection” which is a good move as the lyrics stand alone to be the showstopper the band backing up the lyrics beautifully.

Pace amped back up for the truly anthemic “X’s for Eyes” It has everything I could want! Fast pace, emotive lyrics, raw energy, catchy chorus.

“Bad Beat” more like bad ass beat! What a ballad! Oh my lord! The licks from the guitar are infectious. The lyrics tearing my heart strings out of my chest.  I got goosebumps from the vocals. The range is truly incredible. It had me close to tears it was stunning from start to finish. It has moments that truly haunted. The backing vocals creating these elements of harmony that took this song from 100 to 1000!

“Slipping Through” another gut puncher. This section of the album just has be in floods of tears, this album is just healing my inner teen.

“Home Improvement” another chorus belting anthem. The pace is upped and it’s a true lighters in the air moment. “Twenty Hour Drive” another pop punk punch.

“Kins and Carrol” a true heartbreak anthem.

“Getting By” the ending crescendo of this track had me in floods of tears. The build up on this was truly beautiful.

“Worth It” holy moly! This was grit. Straight off the bat there is metal vocal accompaniment from guest vocalist “Craig Mabbitt”. The vocals “you don’t have to try so hard to be prefect, you have my love, know that you’re worth it” this hit so so hard.

Being a trauma survivor and long time mental health sufferer. I truly don’t feel worth it some days. Songs like these not only help me. But I’m sure they help many others too. What an ending. Oh my god!

The musicality has been stellar since the bands debut, and these guys being seasoned musicians truly shows. The synergy is impeccable. Almost 20 years this band had their first album debut and it doesn’t sound like they have aged one bit.

I can’t pick a favourite track! I honestly can’t! I have been wanting to take some time where I can really immerse myself into this album and give it the true time it deserves.

The lyrics are some of the most emotive I’ve ever listened to. Songs of anguish, hurt, heartbreak and rising through the falls. I have been through the wringer in my life, and come out fighting just like this album expresses. So I find a true comfort when I am presented with something that just clicks.

Honestly, when I listen to music that connects, it’s like being wrapped in an emotional support blanket. I’m encompassed into this transcendent feeling of peace. That’s how music makes me feel. That’s what makes me passionate, that’s what gives me the drive to write. This album has truly awakened something in me. It’s made me laugh, it’s made me absolutely sob, and it’s made me reminisce and remind myself of how far I’ve come and what I’ve overcome to get here.

I’ve said this before about albums but this is a truly phenomenal album. For the lovers of the early pop punk/emo sound. This is for you!

The big question for this is, with the likes of My Chemical Romance touring and now the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus releasing an absolutely killer album… is emo back? Is the sound of the early 2000s making a comeback? I say yes!

It was never a phase!!  All the underdogs unite! I am so happy that the music that shaped my teens is so prevalent in 2025. This album in my eyes will stand up against the other greats in the genre at the moment.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - THANK YOU! You have made this woman who never felt like she belonged in her teens and early 20s, truly be seen.

The band are currently touring the US but I seriously cannot wait for them to get back on UK soil. *****

Album review: NINE BELOW ZERO – Blues Power Volume 1

Nine Below Zero’s ‘Blues Power Volume 1’ does what it says on the tin.

The album represents the best blues tracks they bands has recorded over the last 20 years. And if the South London band might have borrowed their album title from Albert King, and Chicago blues provided them with fuel for their fire, this album is essentially a restatement of their core blues values in a career spanning three and half decades.

It’s an album that kicks like a mule, swings like a circus roundabout, and is a consistently powered by unrelenting energy.

The core members of Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham learnt their brand of blues via their parents Chicago blues platters, while adding the energy of the J. Geils Band and the UK DIY punk ethos.

The result was a high octane r&b outfit which evolved from energetic blues covers to an impressive catalogue of self released material.

It’s almost as having learnt their craft and more, they have come full circle by playing the music they love on their own terms.

One reason for their return to the blues might be that a couple of their self penned noughties releases were received with underwhelming attention, be it the song driven ‘Refrigerator’ in 2000 or the very underrated ‘It’s Never Too Late’ in 2009.

In between the above two studio albums, they also released the 2005 ‘Hats Off’ blues album, which provides half of the material here and is reinvigorated by Wayne Proctor’s production, mixing and mastering work.

You can probably trace the genesis of the new album back to Proctor’s work on the band’s early career ‘Back in The Day’ album (ie. Stan’s Blues Band era) recorded in the late 70’s and re-mixed etc in 2022.

Mark Feltham’s powerful dirt sounding harp helps extend Willie Dixon’s  ‘I Want To Be Loved’, from the original short version to be found on that album to 2.18 seconds worth heavy of coruscating Chicago blues here.

‘Blues Power Volume 1’ finds a couple of different band line-ups in hard driving form over 12 tracks, on which Dennis’s guitar playing holds sway over Mark Feltham’s harp playing.

The opening cover of Little Milton’s  ‘That’s What Love Can Make You Do’ is a banger, and finds the expanded big band of the ’13 Shades Of Blue’ album in a vibrant experimental mode, as guest Glenn Tilbrook adds some unexpected sitar guitar to bring a delightful tonal variation alongside one of Greaves’ very best vocals.

And if harp player Mark Feltham initially takes a back seat, he soon makes his presence felt on Little Walter’s instrumental ‘The Toddle’.

The track is a magical showcase of his abilities, as he digs deep for an emotional connection with the blues, while adding effortless technique.

The power shuffle ‘Baby’ is well worthy of being chosen as the lead radio track, especially given the ‘Blues Power’ album title.

It’s a tightly wrought and sonically crisp outing featuring a great combination of Greaves’ stinging guitar attack and nuanced vocal, while Ben Waters adds piano fills over an ‘in the pocket’ rhythm section.

The band’s self penned ‘Austerity Blues’ is even better, with more aggressive guitar playing bolstered by beefy horns and a stellar harp break at 1.52, on a track which extends its sonic venom into socially relevant lyrics:

“It’s the rich that get the gravy and the poor that get the blame, it’s the same the whole world over, ain’t it a crying shame.”

South London blues indeed!

And if there’s a whiff of over familiarity to ‘Everyday I Have The Blues’, there’s no denying the feverish way the band attacks the piece to round off side one (assuming you buy the vinyl options!)

Keyboard player Ben Waters alternates between piano and organ, as he works his way round Greaves’ piercing guitar lines, as they blow away the metaphorical cobwebs, powered by the incendiary Brendan O’Neil on drums.

Mark Feltham make a significant re-appearance on Willie Dixon’s ‘I’m Ready’, on a swing-led combination of warm timbre vocals, grainy harp and behind- the-beat swagger.

‘Blues Power Volume 1’ certainly lives up to its name, with Wayne Proctor’s input bringing a significant impact to the vocals and instrumental separation, leaving the band to add their trademark dynamics on the perfunctory ‘Move It’.

Eddie Boyd’s ‘Blues Is Here to Stay’ is another highlight, being a whip crack shuffle powered by the Gerry McAvoy/Brendan O’Neill rhythm section, which somehow leaves enough space for Ben Waters’ piano.

The album finishes with a celebratory double shot, incorporating Freddie King’s version of ‘Takin’ Care of Business’ and the Dennis Greaves penned ‘It’s Never Too Late’.

Mark Feltham’s signature flighty harp and note bends provide the perfect foil for Greaves’s exaggerated vowels on an aptly titled jumpy track.

If nothing else, it might nudge the band in the direction more self penned blues output.

After all ‘Blues Power, Volume 1’ suggests there’s more music in the pipeline. ****

Single reviews: CAITLIN KRISKO & THE BROADCAST – Let It Ride, Hello My Dear

These singles from Cailtin are coming like bullets from a gatling gun at the moment. So fast that I didn’t have chance to review ‘Let It Rid’e before Hello My Dear dropped on me.

So briefly ‘Let It Ride’ is more sass and swagger from Caitlin and the boys, with some swooping slide, a bit of tremolo and a whole lot of rock guitar underpinning Caitlin’s vocal attitude, which is badass indeed. The bass and drums are holding rock steady and the overall effect is what you want from America’s latest roots and rock band.

The latest single released a mere four weeks after Let It Ride, is ‘Hello My Dear’, and it puts the breaks on to deliver a little slow blues number, with all the ingredients you would expect of such a number. It features some lovely fender Rhodes piano and Hammond organ, with some pedal steel guitar weaving in and out, with the obligatory but tasteful electric lead break Caitlins plaintiff voice emoting over the top, being the icing on the cake

I’m not one to look for new and groundbreaking music, I was brought up on rock and blues and although I have taken detours into dangerous territory at times I have always sought comfort in good honest old fashioned country tinged rock n roll and blues, and this is what Caitlin Krisko and The Broadcast deliver every time.

All these singles will be available on a 6 track collectors EP, Keepsake, released in December and also a forthcoming album, Heirloom, released early 2026. I know what I am putting on my Christmas list.

The band is also going out on a UK tour between 30th November and 13th of December.

Kris Barras has evolved his style fairly dramatically from his early blues rock days, embracing first more commercial melodic rock, and latterly a heavier modern rock style, even stating that last Kris Barras Band effort ‘Halo Effect’ drew on his love of metalcore, not one of my usual musical genres.

However that love of the blues does not leave you easily, which is why he has formed the Hollow Souls as a vehicle for some blues rock songs that no longer fitted within the day job. They are styled as a blues rock ‘collective’ based around long-time collaborators Josiah J Manning, reverting to his original keyboard role in KBB, and singer Phoebe Jane, and for their debut six song EP they have enlisted some star collaborators to join the collective.

With an intro like old KBB favourites ‘Hail Mary’ or ‘Ignite (Light It Up)’ , ‘Borderline’ is reassuringly back in his old musical ballpark with an explosion of blues rock solos from Kris and Jared James Nichols in and around Phoebe’s bluesy singing.

‘Bad Things’ has a retro feel and an interesting arrangement where the Cold Stares’ Chris Tapp sings the verse and Phoebe the chorus, while on ‘I Need the Fire’ Kris’ rapid riffing is supported by Josiah’s keyboards on an impressive melodic hard rocker not dissimilar to the material on the new- look Brave Rival’s new EP.

‘Burn It To The Ground’ sees Elles Bailey lend her honeyed voice to a raunchy blues rocker, but ‘Shotgun’ is even better as Jon Harvey of Monster Truck, supported by Pheobe, roars his way through some a quite brilliant slice of vintage heavy southern-styled blues rock.

All the first five songs are brisk and hover at little over the three-minute mark, but final song ‘Chasing Ghosts’ stretches things out, a haunting slow song with great piano and guitar work as it progresses.

The promise I witnessed at their debut show (a secret set at this summer’s Maid of Stone) has been thrillingly fulfilled. My only complaint is that the six songs leave you wanting more. **** 1/2

Album review: PUNCHDRUNK SAINTS – S/t

In 2023 The Cockney Rejects’ guitarist and founder, Micky Geggus, after much soul searching, decided to leave the band that he created in 1979. Along with original Rejects’ bassist, Vinny Riordan, Mick decided to embark upon a project that encompassed his first love: hard, heavy, and at the same time, melodic, rock.

They added drummer, Reg Downer, and acting on a tip from guitarist friends, Dennis Stratton (who adds backing vocals on the album) and Dave Edwards, he recruited vocalist Marc Salmon. This was the line-up that recorded this debut album, however, since then the band have since changed line-up as neither Vinny nor Reg could commit to the band long-term. They were replaced by drummer Chris Nedzynski and bass player Tim Atkinson (Leader of the Down).

‘I Wanna Know What It’s Like’ is prime time Massive Wagons meets the Wildhearts and is a proper banger as the younger folks would say. One to blast out of the speakers. ‘Days of Our Lives’ is another fist pumping anthem which will sound great performed live.

There is a cover on here, a rather heavy and enjoyable version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song ‘Fortunate Son’. This one and ‘Dirty Dreams’ show off Mick Geggus’s guitar skills. Plenty of crunchy riffs and solos that will satisfy the most ardent air guitarist!

They certainly have a find in Marc Salmon, who has not only the powerful voice, but most importantly a melodic tone. Be it on the ballad, ‘I Know How To Find You’ (featuring some uplifting acoustic guitar) or the heavy duty ‘Your Time Is Done’, Marc Salmon’s vocals suit the songs to a tee.

Thankfully Micky Geggus followed his first love and with Punchdrunk Saints we have an album full of high energy, melodic hard rock. A tour with the likes of the Wildhearts, Massive Wagons or the Dead Daisies would be perfect. Let’s hope this is the start of a successful chapter for Punchdrunk Saints. ****

Life has not been straight forward for Kira Mac after a flying start to their career, with line-up changes and industry troubles which have culminated in a decision to release their long awaited second album independently. Neither was it a good sign that this London date of an extensive tour was downgraded to the smaller of the two Academy venues, though it did feel full and they had no trouble generating an atmosphere.

There were a pair of support bands in Wrex and Hell Hotel, both with female co-lead singers, and both based in Brighton. The former mixed a punky approach with elements of Linkin Park- style nu-metal, and the latter were more in an emo and hardcore vein. It was too shouty for me to personally enjoy, and I suspect many of my fellow older fans in the crowd felt the same way, but their levels of energy and raw enthusiasm were admirable.

After a lengthy intro Kira Mac opened with ‘Climbing’ and singer Rhiannon Kira Hill, always the focal point with her long blonde hair, got the crowd moving from the off. ‘Dead Man Walking’ and ‘No Way Out’ both boasted some heavy riffs and tidy solos from Joe Worrall. The four piece band, completed by bassist Vernon Whitmore and drummer Loz Riley, behind a massive Perspex screen, have been stable for a while now. At the early shows I saw with this line up I thought the band were trying too hard to toughen up, but now they have settled down and found a nice balance, no less heavy but with a leaner and tighter sound.

‘Chaos is Calling’ saw Rhiannon, who has a naturally personable rapport with the crowd, orchestrating air punching and shouts of ‘hey’. Now familiar songs from the debut album such as ‘One Way Ticket’ and ‘Hit Me Again’ nestled alongside ‘Monster’, which I remembered hearing last year at Firevolt, with an excellent hook.

What makes Kira Mac an interesting proposition is that the music is modern, downtuned hard rock, yet Rhiannon’s vocals have a soulful or even country pop tinge to them, hardly surprising given her varied background. She copes with the different style with ease and yet those vocals not only make the lyrics very audible, but smooth off some of those harsher edges. A variety of favourites were played one after another, from the heavier such as ‘Save Your Whiskey’ to the more overtly commercial including the bouncy chorus and feisty sentiments of ‘Scorned’, and ‘Playing the Game’.

Some of the ‘new’ songs are older than others as they were already blooding them when I first saw them in the Summer of 2023. However as the night wore on, and to promote some special demos the band were selling at the show of numbers that may or may not make it to the album, unfamiliar songs eventually predominated in the latter part of the set.

‘Haunt Me’ saw Rhiannon involve the crowd in swaying their arms: however the backing tapes that had been audible but mainly on intros and fills were unduly prominent on the chorus on this occasion. I’m afraid that is one of my bugbears as a grumpy old school rocker and another was in evidence all night, the youthful ‘content creators’ tasked with generating a social media buzz, which unfortunately is a modern fact of life. Not for them the photographer’s code of the ‘three songs and out’  pit as they get right on stage and in the band’s faces.

Many of those new songs were lyrically influenced by their own recent challenges including ‘Comeback Better’ and ‘Demons’. ‘Go 4 Blood’ and recent single ‘Try’ were both distinctively heavier and more aggressive, though as the set wore on a slight unease struck me that too many of the songs seem to be written to a very similar structure, and sound naggingly like others.

‘Farewell’ was lyrically a suitable closer for an hour and a quarter set where they crammed in an impressive 16 songs with little padding. This show was a good sign that they have come out swinging from some challenging times- lets hope they are soon in a position to release that long-awaited second album.

The New Roses have become a fixture on the UK circuit, this being their fourth autumn jaunt in a row, and yet the success they have had in Germany still eludes them here despite all that roadwork. I did wonder if the rave reviews at this summer’s Stonedead festival would add some new fans, but on a night with a lot of competition for gigs the attendance was if anything down on previous years.

They had their best matched support act for a long while in The Mercury Riots, an LA quartet who have high octane rock and roll coursing through their veins. It was just a shame that not only was the sound rather muddy, but they seemed to play in near darkness. I don’t think I ever made out the face of singer Justin Walker, only his cowboy hat, though his strong roar impressed, with a touch of Noddy Holder to it.

Songs to make a mark on me included ‘Light It Up’, ‘Good Time Overload’, ‘Keep Walking’ and ‘Make Love’. Guitarist Felipe Rodrigo had a great tone and I was entertained by his skyward guitar tilts and a venture into the crowd during set closer and probably their best known song ‘Save Me a Drink’. Their sound, pitched somewhere between AC/DC and the sleaze bands, may not be original but they carried it off with great stage presence and panache.

Anyone coming fresh to The New Roses would have been struck quite how American they sounded and not at all typically Germanic. For the rest of us, especially those who had seen them at Stonedead, there were few surprises in the set and they opened with a trio from excellent last album ‘Attracted to Danger’ in the title track, ‘Bring the Thunder’ and ‘When You Fall in Love’, each all out rockers yet showing their hook-filled songwriting qualities.

Singer Timmy Rough, in his near faultless English, joked that they had gone against advice that ballads were passe, before he donned acoustic for ‘All I Ever Needed’ and asked us to wave our phone lights. A bit like Cinderella’s Tom Keifer, his raspy voice was equally suited to the heavier songs as more melodic ones such as this, while it was one of many to feature short but sweet solos from Norman Bites, and let’s face it the image of a German crouched over his Flying V with long fair hair flowing is an iconic one.

‘Lion In You’ was altogether heavier while ‘Forever Never Comes’ boasted big ‘who-oahs’ and ‘heys’ not seen since Bon Jovi’s peak years, then in a move which might have sat better as an encore than mid-set, The Mercury Riots marked the end of the tour by coming on for a hugely entertaining cover of ‘Rocking in the Free World’ with sundry members of both bands bouncing around together.

Going way back to earlier in their career, ‘Dead Man’s Voice’ was another heavier one with solos for once from both Norman and his lower key guitar partner Dizzy Daniels, before an outstanding trio of memorable choruses in ‘Natural Born Vagabonds’, ‘1st Time For Everything’ with more ‘who-oahs’ and the glam rock-like ‘Nothing But Wild’.

‘It’s A Long Way’ was more raw and dated back to their very first album, before a solo slot from Norman in a set otherwise devoid of any padding. Indeed from then on classics came thick and fast in the speedy power pop feel of ‘This Heart’, the anthemic mid-tempo strains of ‘Glory Road’, and big chorus of ‘Every Wild Heart’, before ending with the faithful roaring along to ‘Thirsty’.

With the curfew looming, they dispensed with the pretence of going off and instead tore back into a pair of encores, ‘The Usual Suspects’, another with a chorus made for punching the air, then the anthemic youthful tale of ‘Down By the River’, Bryan Adams via Wiesbaden rather than Vancouver. Norman sortied into the crowd, and was joined by the watching Felipe, something of a bromance blossoming between the two extrovert guitarists.

In an hour and a half set, it was hard to complain at an excellent choice of songs. The band cover a lot of musical bases, rocking hard but with some insanely catchy songs, and put on a hard working show, so it remains one of life’s injustices that somehow they are still not bigger in the UK.

Steeleye Span embark on UK tour in November and December to promote their latest album, Conflict. We recently caught up with Steeleye Span’s Maddy Prior to discuss the new album, tour, her solo work and more…

You’ve got the new album out  Conflict, which is obviously quite topical at the moment, isn’t it?

Yes, it is that that was kind of the intention. I mean I consider traditional material to be relevant just in different clothes and different transport systems. A lot of it is much the same people. People don’t change.

What’s the motivation as Steeleye Span has been going for over 50 odd years. How easy or hard is it for you to actually get the motivation to record new music?

Oh well, it’s not. It’s not hard at all, really. I mean, that’s because that’s what we do. Music has been my life and a large part of it has obviously been singing. And it’s interesting that whatever band you’re in, that’s what you do in that band. And Steeleye has got a sort of particular remit. I think we push the boundaries a bit on this album, but not more than some other albums have done that we’ve done. I think it’s like 24 albums or something.

With the November and December tour coming up, how do you decide the set list? All Around My Hat will be a given!

Well, it’s our kind of anthem and we always do that at the end, but luckily we don’t have to do any others really. So, we’ve got a big back catalogue to choose from and that’s what we do. We kind of go through and see what songs we haven’t done for a while. Sometimes like ‘Dogs and Ferrets’ that hadn’t been done since we first recorded it. I thought, well, I don’t know why we haven’t done it. I know why we didn’t do it now because it’s really hard to perform.

One of the great things about Steeleye Span are acapella songs like that one and also Somewhere Along the Road and Reclaimed, one my favourite Steeleye songs.

One of my daughter’s songs that was, Ellen Rose. It’s more or less her arrangement, she’s just brilliant. We did ‘Shipbuilding’ as well as a mainly acapella piece and that was lovely to do. So we look at songs and look to do them different ways, unless they’ve got riffs that kind of dominate and you can’t really change them very much. We still managed to change them quite a lot. Even with the riffs.

Steeleye are at the rockier end of folk…

We’re quite loud. We’re quite full on, a proper band, as it were, in that sense with the lead guitar and rhythm guitar, and they take turns and that.  We have done a huge amount of traditional material over the years. Yeah, that’s been our sort of our remit. That’s our base if you like. But then you always move away from it and then move back to it. That’s kind of what you do with traditional music. It acts as a sort of foundation, and you kind of then move from that to whatever you’re going to do. And sometimes you take it with you and sometimes you don’t.

When you first started out what was the first traditional song you remember learning and singing and why did it resonate with you?

I think I learned ‘The Lark In The Morning’, as the first traditional song which I learned at school. We did it with Steeleye, but only because I found it in the English folk song journals. And then I thought oh, it’s the proper folk song. I didn’t like school versions of things they were a bit straight but Lark in the Morning, fantastic song that Miss Macy taught us. She also taught us John Barleycorn but never explained that it was about beer!

There’s a lot of violence in the traditional songs and in children’s nursery rhymes. There’s quite a lot of violence in those and particularly lullabies and Grimms fairy tales  are always quite dark.

How did you start the singing and music schools you now run?

Well, it started because my mother came to live with me and I live in the middle of nowhere and I think looking out the window and only seeing sheep was a bit much so. So I thought that I could run courses without necessarily being residential, which we weren’t then. We ran them and people stayed elsewhere and it was very largely because my mother was there and I thought I should be at home more as well. Then when my mother passed it just kind of carried on. I realised that I really like teaching.

There’s a massive group of young people now that have been raised by my generation of folk enthusiasts. They are aficionados of folk music now, and they know a lot about it. They know all about the old traditional singers and they’re very much into the academic side of it all, which is fascinating.

Folk clubs were very important when Steeleye were starting out?

Well, it depended on what sort of folk club it is. They were all very different. A lot back in the day were in pubs. But that doesn’t happen so much anymore because the pubs have changed their nature. There used to be the snug and they’d be the public bar, whereas now it’s all one, so there’s no room for singing anymore. Most of them tend to perform in small arts centres and things like that, and a lot more of the folk music goes on in festivals. Festivals are very strong.

You have your own festival, Forgotten Lands.

Yeah, it’s lovely. It’s in the field next to my house.

We’ve had some lovely festivals. It’s very small. All very safe and secure. You know what I mean? It’s in one field and it’s very bijou.

Turning back to the tour you’ve got in November and December. How do you decide which venues you go to? Do you tend to go to the same ones?

Well, we don’t decide, John Dagnall books it for he’s the manager. And he basically puts out that that we’re going on tour at that time and he arranges it with the various venues. He tries to make it so that we’re not going up and down the country all the time. You know there’s always two or three long drives, but he works it out  and he knows all the people at the venues. He knows the sort of venues we play.

Steeleye play quite different sized venues don’t they?

Yes we do. The Cadogan we do regularly that’s sort of become our London gig and quite often we finish a tour there which works for us. We then all go in our different directions. A couple of people in London, couple of people in Hastings and a couple of us are up in in north Cumbria.

When you started out with Tim Hart and formed Steeleye, I assume you never thought you’d still be doing it all these years later?

Well no, I don’t know what I thought we would be doing. I didn’t think about it at all back then.

I did a week in a Wimpy bar for £10 and a gig on my own with the banjo for £8 and I thought I’ll do this for a bit and that was because you could do that then. You didn’t have to make a decision about your life, you kind of bumbled along and it kind of happened. Whereas now I think people have to plan and think about how they’re going to approach life and work and things.

Yes, there’s a lot more pressure on young people now, especially on musicians starting out now. I have seen some excellent young musicians at the folk gigs in Harwell Village and you think, how can you make a living out of this because you’re going all around the country and the expense of it?

Yeah. I mean, when we first started, of course, there weren’t that many playing folk. People said, why don’t you get a proper job? Now this is the proper job. This is what people would like to do full time but it’s always been hard to do it full time. You’ve got to commit and of course we made no money at the beginning. It gradually built up. But Tim and I working around the folk clubs, we didn’t make a fortune, but we made enough.

It is that drive that keeps you going, because you obviously love the music and love the performing side of it?

Yeah. I mean, it’s great. It’s great making music with great musicians and I’ve always worked with really good people. So, it’s been fantastic. I mean, what’s not to like?

You toured with the Carnival Band but that finished last year?

Yes. Well, we’re not going to do any more Christmassy things because they’ve all got families and they want to be at home, and that makes sense. And they’re kind of more classical players and classical minded. You know what I mean? So that’s slightly different world. They think slightly differently. But I suspect we’ll do something. Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know. Like I say, we’ve kind of roll with the punches, really.

On the new album you have ‘Low Flying’ which is a great song, very poppy and you can almost imagine that being on daytime radio, but perhaps not what you’d expect from a folk band?

Yeah and because it was written in the 80s. I’ve now decided that anything written in the 80s is now traditional because all the references on that, people don’t know them anymore. Young people will have no idea what you’re talking about.

We brought in those songs of Rick’s – like ‘Genocide’ – because they’re now history and still relevant.

I think in the folk world you’ve got to have an interest in history. It comes with the territory and also its all about the way people behave, what they do and that doesn’t change. The folk ballads are about human nature.

Honey Bee is another unusual song on Conflict with its ska beat.

It is ska. I was into Prince Buster in early days. When I was a mod.

Well, it’s gone out outside our remit a bit on that album, but the one before it, ‘Green Man’, I think was more in our line but, you know, there’s always a few tracks that are on the edge. But I think that’s what keeps the health and longevity of Steeleye.

Steeleye have worked with many musicians including Ian Anderson, David Bowie, Francis Rossi. Who did you most enjoy working with?

Oh well, they were all interesting in different ways. I mean, Ian is great ’cause he’s kind of been there throughout because we were on Chrysalis together right at the beginning. He produced my first solo album and so we’ve kind of got a connection. That goes back a long way and he’s a great performer and great musician and writer. I love his writing.

Those two albums Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses, both brilliant albums. They took the English quality and made something else of it.

What sort of set list can fans expect on the upcoming tour?

There’ll be some of Conflict on inevitably, but also we’ll be looking at the back catalogue and seeing which songs everybody fancies doing because for some of them it’s all new.

There’s a lot of it to listen to, so they have a listen and see which ones they like. I put some forward as well. In the few weeks before the tour we start emailing about what we’re gonna do and what we think we’d like to do. Who’s gonna sing it? You know, that sort of thing. We do three or four days rehearsals before every tour.

Going back to your solo stuff because you’ve done several solo albums and you also did the Silly Sisters with June Tabor in 1976

I’ve always had another string to the bow, if you like.  I did some work with Nick Holland and Troy Donockley. I loved the material that we did and we had longer pieces as well which was a different thing for me. I  worked with Giles Lewin and John Kirkpatrick, then I did music with Hannah James and Giles (2012, 2017).

We’re looking to do something with Jon Boden.  He came to our festival. We did some Tim Hart and Maddy songs which was lovely.  I’m looking to do a bit of work with Spud (Andrew Sinclair, Steeleye’s guitarist), who lives up this end. We’re looking to do some work together next year maybe. I’ve always got something on the go.

Would you consider doing other solo album or do you prefer, like you say, working with other musicians?

I’ve always worked with other people. I am a team player.

Album review: MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP – Don’t Sell Your Soul

The announcement for this album came as a bit of a surprise to many. Michael had been out touring his UFO live set around the globe, so where he found the time to fit in the writing and recording of this album is anyone’s guess.

As with previous releases, Michael has teamed up with various vocalists to take to the mic across the eleven tracks on offer here. Depending on your personal preferences this can either be a good thing, or can make an album a bit of a patchy affair. I will leave you to form your own opinions on that…

The album opens with the title track ‘Don’t Sell Your Soul’ which is built around a chugging riff that urges the song on. Erik Gronwall takes vocal duties here, and on the bulk of the albums tracks, and puts in a good performance.

We then enter the ‘Danger Zone’ with Michael showing a flash of his fretboard skills at the start before the track settles in as a classic melodic rock song with a rock solid riff. That then leads us into the ‘Eye Of The Storm’ which moves things up several gears. A driving bassline coupled with a heavy riff and an excellent vocal performance from Robin McAuley makes this an early album highlight.

Joining Michael for this album are his current live backing band, Bodo Schopf on drums, Barend Courbois on bass and Steve Mann on guitar and keyboards, and they prove to be a very tight unit.

‘Janey The Fox’ slows things down a bit with a bluesy riff and a laid back vocal. The song itself twists and turns and is an interesting composition. We then get back to more familiar ground with ‘I Can’t Stand Waiting’ which, again, is another melodic rock staple. A great song very much in the classic Schenker vein.

Michael Voss then steps up to the mic for ‘Sign Of The Times’ which ups the ante once more in the full-on rock stakes. Michael’s guitar work here is highly impressive and a good reminder, if you needed one, on why he is still at the top of the six string tree.

Next track, ‘The Chosen One’, has a darker feel to it. A slow, brooding track that reminds me in part of Dio era Rainbow, right up until the drums kick in and Michael streaks off at lightening pace towards the end of the track. Quite the finishing flurry!

We then return to more traditional fare once more with ‘It’s You’. Another straightforward rocker, which is no bad thing, complete with more blistering fretwork from Herr Schenker.

Robin McAuley then takes the mic once more for ‘Six string Shotgun’. This is another dark, brooding number with a big chorus which Robin handles with ease. Of all the vocalists on the album, for me, Robin stands out above the rest. His distinctive vocal delivery is a perfect fit for Michael’s music and harks back to the glory days of the McAuley/Schenker Group.

Given that the band were busy touring the UFO back catalogue whilst recording this album, it comes as no surprise to find a bit of that influence within this album. The melodies and song structure of ‘Flesh and Bone’ bring to mind some of UFO’s big hitters, but has the Schenker stamp firmly on it.

The album is rounded off with ‘Surrender’ which gives Bodo Schopf a real workout on his double bass pedals. This is a fast paced, riff laden track which brings the album to a close at a frantic pace.

This album sends a firm message that Michael can still write a great song and that his nimble fingerwork is undiminished after all his years of rocking. Proof indeed that if you have talent in spades then you don’t need to sell your soul to be a rock god!  ****

Album review: BURNING ROPE – Burning Rope

The self titled ‘Burning Rope’ debut album is the work of a band striving to find an equilibrium in musical styles and direction.

It’s an old school album which achieves its goal with deep grooves, fine interplay, reflective and observational story telling narratives and dollops of Pink Floyd era, David Gilmour style guitar.

But the band also self evidently derives a sense of modernity from its Catfish antecedents and a cross generational line-up.

And while much of Catfish’s bluster and intensity came from the late Matt Long, Burning Rope pursues a subtler soft rock approach with understated authority.

There’s still plenty of room for spontaneity and intensity, both of which often bubble up in exciting ways, but everything is channelled into supporting a song.

Significantly they also make the most of detailed arrangements, from the choice of instrumentation to the song structures. As a result there’s plenty of space for solos, fills, and nuanced tones, while the music consistently amplifies lyrical meaning and moods.

The album is also rich in musical variety, exploring elements of rock, blues, prog and funk, which allows the band members play to their strengths.

The impressive ‘Now More Than Ever’ is a hi-octane opener featuring Alex Voysey on a curiously mixed back vocal over a Faces style riff.

It’s a track that almost broaches Southern Rock, but settles on a harmony-rich hook with salient bv’s.

The band’s blend of harmonies and melodies serves them well, as many of the tracks are Paul Long penned and keyboard led songs.

‘Life in Reverse’ is one of his best songs, which sends out the mission statement: “Don’t be the one living with regret”, as Alex digs deep for a sinewy solo over layered keyboards.

It builds again, to a shredded solo over a slight tempo change which ushers in an intense stop-time finish.

Much of the playing has a ‘live in the studio’ feel, giving the album enough edge to counterweight the mid-tempo grooves such as ‘Something’s Got To Give (Part One)’.

‘Rise Up’ on the other hand, opens as a ‘kitchen sink and all’ funky groove. It overcomes a slightly overextended vocal at the 2.45 mark, to build enough power to transform itself into a ‘call and response’ rocker which evokes the optimism of the title.

The best groove of all, (and possibly the album’s best song) is the well crafted ‘Anyway’, which draws us in via an intriguing opening line: “You don’t know what you want and I can’t say what I need.”

Built on a vaguely Steely Dan influenced piano-led lilting groove and an intuitive vocal, it veers into Floyd territory, initially via the line: “Be careful what you do, be careful who you trust in this crazy world, with its many shades of grey.”

Alex Voysey adds some subtle touch and tone on a David Gilmour style solo at 2.57, which brings additional feel to enquiring lyrics. He finishes with a climactic solo before the song quietly comes to rest on the song title.

There’s no lack of ambition here, as evidenced by the inclusion of two covers, of which Elton John’s ‘Have Mercy On The Criminal’ is given a very original make over, as they compensate for Paul Buckmaster’s original cinematic strings with a big guitar break.

And while the new cover eschews the animus of Elton’s Leon Russell timbered vocal and screech, Paul Long’s warmer phrasing taps into the lyrical sympathy of the song.

It’s an unexpected triumph which also makes the most of Chloe Josephine’s significant presence.

The bombastic stomp of Eric Cobb’s ‘Tainted Love’ on the other hand, owes more to The Scorpions version than either Gloria Jones or Soft Cell.

The spiky organ stabs and drop-down dynamics works hard to bring spark and innovation, but given the outlined musical parameters of the album, and Adam Pyke’s thin vocal, it feels like an awkward fit.

And so to the closing 3 song suite, 2 songs of which fully unveil the band’s Pink Floyd influence.

The deeply felt ‘Before The Landslide’ is a slow building Gilmour style piece with heart wrenching lyrics about resilience, and were it not for inevitable Floyd comparisons would surely become a Burning Rope classic.

Then there’s the Richard Wright style keyboard textures and more evocative Gilmour toned guitar on the hymnal ‘After The Landslide’, which surely will evoke memories of ‘Wish You Were Here.’

The album then suddenly reaches back to complete part two of ‘Something’s Got To Give’, with a cleverly conceived alternative perspective on the earlier relationship song.

Some proggy ethereal guitar from Voysey and Long’s spoken word outro provide the perfect bookend to a well crafted album.

As with all good albums it also leaves a tantalising void, which with respect, you would hope applies as much to anticipating the band’s future music as it does remembering the late great Matt Long ****

Bioscope, the collaboration between Steve Rothery (Marillion), Thorsten Quaeschning (Tangerine Dream) and Alex Reeves (Elbow), have announced the cancellation of their tour planned for December.

Sports Team have cancelled some of their European dates due to not being able to “justify” the financial risks associated with putting on shows.

Stereophonics have cancelled this month’s Australian due to a jaw injury to vocalist Kelly Jones.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens has postponed this month’s US tour due to visa issues.

Other Stuff

Members of Kansas reunited during the encore of the band’s show in Bonner Springs, Kansas on September 26. Former members Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope joined in for the encores, with Phil Ehart and Rich Williams both appearing after recent health issues. Ehart and Williams are still members of the band but rarely appear at live shows.

Ghost have filmed their recent Mexican shows for a future film release.

To commemorate what would have been Marc Bolan’s 78th birthday, English Heritage unveiled a blue plaque at Bolan’s former home in Maida Vale, London. ‘I’m Daze’, a completely unheard T. Rex song recorded in 1975, and recently discovered on studio tapes from the period, has also been released.

Martin Barre’s autobiography ‘A Trick of The Memory: The Autobiography Of Jethro Tull’s Guitarist‘ is published McNidder & Grace on November 6.

Neil Young has announced he is removing all of his music catalogue from Amazon.

The fireworks at AC/DC’s August gig Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh exceeded “permitted noise levels.” Following complaints from this gig, and three nights of Oasis at the same stadium, the Edinburg Council is advising that fireworks are no longer used “at future events.”

Queen have been announced as the most-played rock act of the 21st century on radio and TV in the UK, according to PPL data released to celebrate National Album Day on Saturday October 18. Queen have amassed over 400 million seconds of radio and TV airplay since the turn of the millennium – equivalent to 12.5 years of continuous play.

‘Spinal Tap At Stonehenge: The Final Finale’ is due in IMAX cinemas next year and the supposed final concert by the band features guests Eric Clapton and Shania Twain.

Spotify have announced an individual premium subscription will rise from £11.99 to £12.99 per month from November in the UK.

Drummer Alex Bent has left Trivium, as has drummer Dave McClain who is no longer a member of Sacred Reich.

Singles review : TREAT – ’1985′ and ‘Adam and Evil’

Frontiers Music [Release date : 26.09.25]

Arena Rock experts and more, Treat recently released ‘Adam and Evil’ and ‘1985’ as teaser trailers for their forthcoming long player, The Wild Card, due out in November.

The band’s high-sheen recording craft is the perfect vehicle for these two sophisticated blasts of toughened up melodic rock.

There’s a fine line between past and present (they released their debut album, Scratch And Bite in 1985), but the bond is strong. The foundational Stadium rock they created (and have recreated time after time), is celebrated here with ‘1985’s anthemic punch and sweetly effortless hook.

Sometimes nostalgic, often confessional, as in ‘Adam And Evil’s tale of a rebellious youth, the sonic images they create reflect the story in each track. Robust and memorably melodic, they pull us inexorably onto the edge of our seats.

We should hope that they release a few more teasers in the coming months. An album release date in November seems a long way off.  ****

Album review: LAURA EVANS – Out Of The Dark

Laura Evans returns with her second album, which is set to further her building musical reputation to add to daytime plays on BBC Radio 2, along with a recent tour supporting Robben Ford.  ‘Out Of The Dark’ was produced and co-written with Ian Barter (Paloma Faith, Amy Winehouse, Dermot Kennedy).

“I poured my heart and soul into this album,” Laura said. “There are big pop choruses, introspective bluesy ballads, a southern rock edge and even a dreamy interlude. It’s a little bit of everything I love, tied together with honesty. I worked with some amazing co-writers on this album who really pushed me both with my writing and vocals and I feel these are some of my best songs to date.”

It is indeed a musical mix, from the pop orientated ‘Honest’ (which has rightly gained prime time play on the BBC Radio 2 breakfast sow) through to ‘Superman’ (written about her husband), an uplifting love themed anthem.

Laura Evans shows here more bluesy side on the recently released uptempo single ‘ATM’, and the slow burning blues ballad ‘Nobody Loves Me Like You Do’. Not sure who the musicians are on the latter song but they played some tasty blues solos and gentle, hypnotic rhythm.

Touch of Shania Twain on ‘Heartbreaker’ – loving the cowbell as you can never have too much of that! ‘I’ll the One’ is a beautifully sung and heartfelt ballad that is sure to make a few Valentine’s playlists next year.

Laura Evans is like fellow Welsh singer songwriter Elles Bailey, growing in musical confidence and style with each new release. ****

Strapps were a late 70s band with a wonderful straight ahead rock sound, and a raunchy (some said misogynistic) image. They formed in 1975 when former Episode 6 and Quatermass drummer Mick Underwood teamed up with Australian guitarist/vocalist Ross Stagg. With bassist Joe Reed and keyboard player Noel Scott on board, they recorded four albums before splitting.

This set collects all four studio albums together, the first two long since deleted on CD and the other two were originally released in Japan only. And an extra disc recorded Live At The Rainbow 1977, originally released a few years back by Angel Air.

The first two albums come squeezed onto one disc. From the outset there’s some fantastic music. The opening track to the eponymous debut, School Girl Funk, a good riff, but it’s the funk rhythm that stands out while remaining solid and heavy. A lovely bass line, some good keyboard/guitar interplay, so if you can see past the lyrics we’re off to a winner. There’s a hint of fusion to Dreaming, Rock Critic has a rock opera feel, with the guitar and keyboards taking a dual lead.

The second album Secret Damage kicks off with the superb Down To You, a building keyboard into and a catchy solid rocker too boot. Overall this album is an improvement, a little more polished and more intelligently constructed.

Onto the second disc and the 1978 3rd album Prisoner Of Your Love, by which time the band had pretty much decamped to Japan. The keyboards and guitar on opener Bound For Glory nod towards a beefed up Deep Purple. There’s a hint of country within the hard rock of the title track, and a horn section to boot. All Through The Night is a polished and more commercial sounding rock song, a track that should have made the band big in America.

1979’s Ball Of Fire, their 4th and last album, added rhythm guitar Ray McRiner to the ranks and another wonderful album. Solid uptempo hard rock, professional, but equally tracks like Evil nodded to the polished NWoBHM sounds of Dark Star or Chevy.

The previously released (but long out of print) Live At The Rainbow is the final disc, with a couple of studio bonuses to boot. Ever so slightly ropey in quality but shows how good the band were live. Beefed up versions of School Girl Funk and Down To You make it well worth the money. Blistering, chunky and solid – sorted.

The albums come in card sleeves inside a clamshell box, a booklet with some decent photos and full album details, but no sleevenotes to speak of. A minor quibble.

Strapps definitely got better with age, but sadly got relegated to the second vision largely on account of their image. Some great music, and a perfect opportunity to add the catalogue to your collection.

If only my good friend Mick Underwood had been around to see this release. ****

Feature: GRTR! Greats – JUDIE TZUKE

Judie Tzuke

Judie Tzuke is best known for her 1979 hit single ‘Stay With Me Till Dawn’. When reviewing her Bury gig in 2015 David Randall noted the outburst from a member of the audience. They didn’t quite know the proper title but were keen to hear Jude play it so they could get the last bus. She duly obliged.

For Randall that gig interaction remains a highlight from a long period of covering the singer songwriter. For many readers she will have been off their radar for the best part of four decades but since establishing her own label (and independence) in the mid-1990s she has produced some of her finest work.

Pete Whalley remains a big fan and recognised ‘…her fortitude, her willingness to work with emerging artists and explore new musical avenues, and for her creativity in producing some of her best works in the latter half of her career. ‘

Reviewing the two Songs collections in 2008 Pete brought the story up to date:

The late 90s and the turn of the decade saw Judie quietly (self) release a clutch of excellent albums – Secret Agent and Queen Secret Keeper – as good as anything in her career, as well as her 2003 covers album The Beauty Of Hindsight, and the last album of her ‘own material’ The End Of The Beginning (2004). And the last couple of years have seen her busier that ever.

Two years later Jason Ritchie reviewed Jude at the Leatherhead Arts centre commenting ‘One of the most enjoyable gigs I have been to in a long time and Judie Tzuke is now firmly on my radar to get her albums for my collection.’

Jason actually identifies the theme behind the ‘GRTR! Greats’ series, encouraging the less familiar reader or listener to venture out and explore back catalogue and maybe a gig. In this respect Judie Tzuke does not disappoint.

On the same tour, about a week later Pete Whalley witnessed the Manchester gig at The Lowry. He identified a voice that had got better with age, a setlist that could be pored over due to the sheer weight of inevitable exclusions and a frustration that her tours were rare.

Judie Tzuke remains a rare talent and one to be treasured. Invest in her music and catch her on tour if you can.

That tour was promoting an excellent CD compilation bringing together all the significant tracks since the 1970s. In 2000 she had managed to get the rights back to her first three albums released by Rocket Records so this material was not off-menu.

Jude is a great collaborator and this album included work with Morcheeba – ‘Enjoy The Ride’ – which also became a regular in her live setlist – along with four new tracks and a couple of re-recordings.

2011′s One Tree Less maintained the high quality of the ‘Songs’ albums and in 2012 the album was toured with a return visit to The Lowry. Pete Whalley noted that some of the best moments were when everything was stripped back, pondering whether a full setlist of just voice and piano would be desirable.

Jude’s next projected album – ‘Women Overboard’- suffered delay and the accompanying tour suffered some cancelled dates due to her throat infection. Nevertheless another album was available that year – Song Club – available directly from www.tzuke.com and maintaining the high quality of the scheduled main release. The 13 tracks had been only available as a download previously and highlights that Jude was dealing direct to her fanbase and offering music via a subscription set-up.

2014 saw Kate Bush’s comeback and Pete Whalley noted, reviewing the Salford gig:

It’s ironic that while Kate Bush’s return to the stage has seen her badged a national treasure, Judie – who quietly continues to ply her trade – has yet to be fully appreciated for the ongoing quality of her work. Her vocal timbre may have weathered but that has added a poignant dimension to her delivery that was absent in her early years.

Songs & Stories was a good humoured evening that left everyone present with a warm glow. Judie Tzuke had bravely opened the window to her world and you just wanted to give her a hug and say ‘well done Jude, you were brilliant’. What a thoroughly nice woman and a wonderful artist.

In May 2015 she embarked on an extensive ‘Songs & Stories’ tour which pretty much answered Whalley’s earlier suggestion.

What made the ‘show’ different to almost any other I’ve seen was the ‘an audience with’ format, with Jude telling stories and taking questions from the floor. And it was how she told those tales and anecdotes – as if she was just having a ‘natter’ over a cup of tea – that won the audience over. It was so ‘natural’ that you really felt like she was your new best friend.

JUDIE TZUKE - Peace Has Broken Out

This format took Jude through 2016 whilst the following year her album Peace Has Broken Out made our end of year ‘Best of’ selections. She never hurries her album releases and Pete Whalley noted the six year gap between this and ‘One Tree Less’. This was essentially the so-called ‘Women Overboard’ piece that was delayed, not least due to the artist’s personal troubles and cancer scare.

Since 2017, and notwithstanding the pandemic, Jude has toured with Beverley Craven and Julia Fordham releasing the album ‘Woman To Woman’ in 2018 and in 2023 the latest studio album ‘Jude The Unsinkable’ a fair enough description of the singer songwriter who has enchanted the faithful since the late 1970s whilst consolidating her undoubted power in the millennium. She tours with Beth Nielsen Chapman in October 2025 and has announced a new solo album for release in late 2025.

Pete Whalley sums up why he thought she won the gong for singer songwriters, after a period of reviewing 8 studio albums and a compilation.

NORDA MULLEN- Half Moon, Putney, London, 21 September 2025

For 15 years, American musician Norda Mullen toured the world with the Moody Blues as a flute player and multi-instrumentalist after Ray Thomas’ retirement. Though she guested with John Lodge on his solo tour earlier this year, she leads a rather quieter existence these days in Richmond upon Thames, the nicest part of London in my biased opinion. However these gigs at the nearby Half Moon have become a tradition and the all-seated show was sold out.

As at last year’s show, support came from Quinny and Company, led by her neighbour Jim Bernard. Full disclosure – I know Jim from the American ex-pat community that my partner belongs to in this part of London and even helped with his press release. But don’t just take it from me- their recent ‘Along the Way’ EP was favourably reviewed in these pages by Jason Ritchie.

Opening with the Christian messages of ‘Worth More’, his band included daughter Sarah who had flown in all the way from Colorado. As well as singing the likes of her composition ‘Drifting’, and ‘Dreams’, she even strummed a ukulele at one point. Father and daughter harmonised well and duetted on a fun cover of Bryan Adams’ ‘When You’re Gone’.

Songs like ‘Hold On Tight’ also benefited from the addition of some delicate lead guitar work from Alan Wishart who was an early member of Big Country. They ended with the folky, America-sounding ‘Under the Willow’ and a rocker in ‘Suzy and Alexander’, Jim throwing everything into his delivery and former Suzi Quatro drummer Colin Woolway a real force, making light of recent ill-health. It all made for a very pleasing warm up.

Introduced by husband Kelvin- who also wrote some of the songs and made a few cameos on acoustic guitar- Norda Mullen opened initially with an intro on the melodica before switching to her more familiar flute on ‘Steal My Thunder’. It was probably the most prog sounding song of the night though gradually developed a lighter and funkier feel. In contrast ‘I Like It’ was gentle folk-pop and led nicely into the first of the night’s covers, a very authentic ‘California Dreaming’, appropriately so as after being raised in the South she spent much of her professional life there. After ‘Live This Way’, ‘Down By the River’, penned with Kelvin about the queuing crowds paying their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth, boasted another lovely flute solo.

Mentioning that a theme of the night would be paying respect to favourite female artists, The Pretenders’ ‘Back On the Chain Gang’ was another one faithfully rendered before her ‘flutified’ instrumental version of ‘Nights in White Satin’. It was hauntingly beautiful but to her credit, and despite the presence of Ray Thomas’ widow in the audience, this was not a night otherwise to trade on the Moody Blues connection, but rather establish her own musical pedigree.

On a Michelle Shocked cover, ‘If Love Was a Train’, the band were let off the leash with a bluesy jam, Norda switching to bass and allowing both guitarists and the keyboard player to play solo slots. ‘Strange Imagination’ was a real grower, sung by tousle-haired guitarist Noris Schenk and with Norda playing penny whistle while ‘Give It Up’ which she described as the nearest to a protest song was again enlivened by flute and melodica, before she took to piano for a Bonnie Raitt ballad, ‘Ain’t Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again’.

‘Live For Today’, once again lifted by some lilting flute melodies and ‘Its OK’ were a little gentle for my own liking but in contrast (after wrongly introducing it as a sixties song) a cover of Focus’ ‘Hocus Pocus’ was a major shock. Noris seemed to enjoy rocking out on the riffs while Norda’s flute playing took the place not only of Thijs Van Leer’s original equivalents but also his yodelling, probably for the best!

In contrast a Fairground Attraction cover ‘The Wind Knows My Name’ was beautifully delivered with Norda again switching to piano and harmonising sweetly with sister Christie. The latter was also playing that most un rock and roll of instruments, the xylophone, as Norda switched back to bass for ‘Home’ which was the set closer, after a fashion.

The band stayed on stage for a couple more numbers, starting with another Fairground Attraction cover in ‘Find My Love’ before ‘Going Up the Country’, the old Canned Heat classic though I didn’t realise that itself was a cover of an original 1920’s song. It was another perfect showcase for a flute solo, and yet this was an evening of surprises to prove that Norda Mullen has a broader musical palette to offer.

Album review: MAY THE MUSE – No Please, Yes Thank You

American/German singer/songwriter Désirée Mishoe who records under the name of May the Muse, has released an intriguing debut album full of musical variety.

The album is produced by Justin Hawkins, who also plays most of the instruments on this album. His brother Dan guests, as do drummers Darby Todd (Devin Townsend, Willie Dowling, Robert Plant) and Jeremy Black, and Jem Godfrey of Frost*

The topical ‘USA’ certainly pulls no punches lyrically, a fiery and feisty start to the album. Then you have the sumptuous ballad ‘Wasted’, which could easily grace the airwaves of BBC Radio 2. It also features a rather fine guitar solo from Mr Hawkins!

The underlying musical theme is one of melodic funk, be it the 70’s throwback sounds on ‘Drama’ (think ELO’s ‘Discovery’ album or late 70′s Stevie Wonder), with its swirling strings and sassy guitar solo, or the Prince like ‘God Damn’ – got to love those synths and funky bassline. Mind you, ‘Millions’ is a more modern pop rocker where her vocals shine above the insistent drumbeat and guitar riff.

The topical ‘USA’ certainly pulls no punches lyrically, a fiery and feisty start to the album. Then you have the sumptuous ballad ‘Wasted’, which could easily grace the airwaves of BBC Radio 2. It also features a rather fine guitar solo from Mr Hawkins!

Darkness fans will doubtless enjoy the connection; however, it is still May the Muse who is rightly the star of the show. ***1/2

With Thunder on indefinite hiatus for some while during Danny Bowes’ long road to recovery, their guitarist and songwriter Luke Morley has been keeping himself extremely busy. In between touring with the Quireboys he has now trebled his solo output in the space of two years with a couple of albums, most recently ‘Walking on Water’, which he is now touring.

Having really enjoyed the first time he dipped his toe into solo live action at Islington Academy early last year, this was something to look forward to and especially so as after rave reviews I was keen to check out Bobbie Dazzle. Sadly, she pulled out sick so there was just the one support in Willie Dowling, also a recruit to Spike’s current line up of the Quireboys. Dressed in a harlequin suit and with a seventies ‘shag’ haircut, he was an engagingly eccentric character with a touch of vaudeville in songs like the Sparks-esque opener ‘I Killed My Imaginary Friend’. The pianist led a trio though the band format did somewhat drown out his lyrical messages.

Many of those songs had an edge to them with his bile directed at greedy capitalists (‘Gravy Train’ and ‘Rats In The Maze’) or politicians (‘Long Drop Down’ and ‘F— You, Goodbye’.  In the week the US President was given the fawning red carpet treatment at Windsor Castle, he was the target of some well-timed satire prior to the title track of the album ‘The Simpleton’. On a lighter note, as a fan of his original band The Grip I did enjoy their old song ‘The Ballad Of Vera Daydream’ which ended the set. An original and unique character though not I suspect to the taste of everyone present.

Luke Morley came on stage accompanied by a very similar band to that last tour and indeed opened with a song from previous solo album ‘Songs From The Blue Room’ in the heartland rock-ish ‘I Wanna See The Light. All that was missing from the recorded version was the female backing vocals, but bassist and Thunder bandmate Chris Childs and keyboardist Sam Tanner provided admirable vocal support all night.

Luke’s solo material is largely stripped of those trademark blues rock riffs we are used to in Thunder, but makes best use of his voice and wears the influences of the classic era of rock and pop on its sleeve. This meant that I found it easy to make inadvertent comparisons regularly. The title track of the new album reminded me of the verses of The Hollies ‘Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress’ and as it went into the instrumental section my partner and I were wondering which of a number of John Fogerty/Creedence numbers it could be, while the sixties garage rock feel of ‘Snakeskin Parachute’ was cut from the same cloth as John Mellencamp’s ‘R.O.C.K. in the USA’.

There was less chat than I recalled from last time, but he did dryly describe that ‘Errol Flynn’, his song about coming to terms with no longer being youthful, had been written about his father but he increasingly realised was about him. That was one of a number of songs where he swapped his Stratocaster for a pink Spanish-style acoustic guitar and indeed even on the electric solos he shared the spotlight with old mate and current Cats In Space guitarist Dean Howard, sporting a dapper trilby.

This was never going to be a night focused on Thunder songs and there is only one man who could do them justice. Nevertheless Luke is more than entitled to play the songs he wrote and chose wisely with ‘River Of Pain’, rearranged with a slower jazzier swing which he joked was bossa nova, though he delivered a more familiar guitar solo in the second part of the song.

Among the new songs ‘Always A Saturday Night’ was an agreeable listen and ‘Natural High’ a solid rocker that at a stretch might have been a suitable Thunder song. ‘Gun To Your Head’ was far removed though from the day job with some old-style country rock guitar playing from Dean.

The wryly told tale of Thunder’s abortive attempt to crack the States, ‘Killed By Cobain’ came over like a jaunty cross between the Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset and the Travelling Wilburys but was eclipsed by ‘Breathe’ which was a truly superb piece of pop rock with great melodies. ‘Watch The Sun Go Down’ rocked things up a bit and Luke encouraged a singalong, but surprisingly after well under an hour that was the end of the main set.

Fortunately there was an encore of more generous length, beginning with his recounting writing a song in his hotel room in LA in 1991 which was a second Thunder classic in ‘Like A Satellite’, but again neatly rearranged and given a more stripped down feel.

‘I’m The One You Want’ owed a little to the Black Crowes and then developed into a funky and impossibly tight jam. That showed off the pedigree of the players who during closer ‘Go With The Flow’ (the sole survivor in the set off his first solo album El Gringo Retro’ from the early 2000s) they were all given solo slots as they were introduced, he and Dean having something of a call-and-response guitar contest.

This was all quality stuff, the only downside being that some of the rock edge was taken off by being in an all-seated theatre, which itself was not full, making it harder to create an atmosphere. It was instead a chance to appreciate another side of his prolific songwriting and enjoy some great melodies and a uniformly high standard of musicianship.

FM are on the road so constantly that it is hard to divine where one tour begins and another ends. However the release of their excellent latest album ‘Brotherhood’ marks the start of a long tour, with the set list incorporating some new songs but also having a bit of a wider revamp. Worryingly few people were present initially at this London date but by the time they hit the stage the eventual crowd was respectable.

Several acts are sharing support duties and I was looking forward to catching Rosalie Cunningham, having missed her set at Maid of Stone Festival. Sadly she caught Covid and with only a day’s notice one of those other supports, Brave Rival, stepped in, which was no hardship for me as a confirmed fan.

Since they also supported FM on their last proper London headline last year at Dingwalls, the Portsmouth-based band have been going through changes. When one of their two lead singers Chloe Josephine left, they regrouped as a more conventional four piece and have accelerated an already evident  change in direction towards an out-and-out rock sound and away from the blues scene where they first emerged.

They  opened with ‘Bad Choices’  with singer Lindsey Bonnick encouraging a clap along but a trio of songs embraced that new direction: ‘Poison’ and ‘Wild Child’ had sharp and more contemporary sounding riffs from Ed ‘the Shred’ Clarke, but the middle one ‘Control’ was even further from anything they have done before, owing more to Evanescence or Halestorm than more traditional blue based artists.

Despite the short notice FM’s Jem Davis came on to add keyboard colour to the highlight of the set ‘Heavy’, with a powerful vocal performance from Lindsey then a second section in which Ed went right to the front of the crowd to start winding up a lengthy solo which grew in intensity in epic fashion. An older favourite in ‘Fairytale’ ended a short set which confirmed the rapid changes in their ranks. They certainly gained some new fans with this performance though there is a risk the new direction may lose others. I’m eager to discover further at their ‘5 to 4’ EP launch at the 100 Club next month.

In contrast FM have seen no need to take chances with an established formula, though the set was reordered with the lively ‘Synchronized’ restored to the front of the set, featuring the first of numerous tidy solos from Jim Kirkpatrick, who appears to be growing his hair. After the classic keyboard intro and AOR melodies of ever present debut album favourite ‘I Belong To The Night’ , ‘Turn This Car Around’- a distant cousin of Bon Jovi’s ‘Blood On Blood’ and the main set closer for the past few years, was moved forward to early in the set.

On the challenging ‘Someday You’ll Come Running’ Steve Overland’s golden voice still hit all the notes before the first new song. While the new album continues their recent trend of covering a variety of bases, they stuck to two of the more conventional melodic rockers which fitted in seamlessly in ‘Living On The Run’ and ‘Don’t Call It Love’, the latter reminding me of eighties greats like Toto and Starship. In between ‘Let Love Be The Leader’ ( shamefully only a single and never on album) had Steve getting the crowd to join in on his trademark ‘who-oah-oahs’ before a classic harmony guitar solo climax between him and Jim.

A very varied set included the return after quite a long absence of old crowd participation favourite ‘Burning My Heart Down’ with Jem even adding some harmonica at the end, ‘Black Water’ with its Americanised southern blues feel and ‘Does it Feel Like Love’ with a Steve vocal solo mid-song.   The only downside was a rather booming mix from the sound desk with the bass arguably too high.

I’m at risk of repeating previous reviews but I am always struck how much the band – whose current line up has been unchanged for 17 years-  appear to enjoy playing together with loads of grins and mickey taking, that occasionally disrupt their usual musical tightness.  They also appear genuinely grateful and without ego and as a fan of (gulp!) 40 years standing I really feel valued.

One way they reward the faithful is in mixing a few different cult favourites into the setlist and in this case a highlight was one of the first songs they wrote in ‘Dangerous’  - though such are its multiple hooks that, as with ‘Let Love Be the Leader’, its omission from ‘Indiscreet’ remains unforgivable. Another surprise was Steve’s velvety voice singing the sweet melodies of ballad ‘Incredible’ which had gone down so well on their acoustic tour in the spring it was put in the regular set for the first time.

However there are certain songs they have to play and a holy trinity of three of their best known came one after another in ‘That Girl’ – where the tempo seems subtly slower than the original- ‘Bad Luck’, ticking my personal boxes including the twin guitar opening and a mid-song keyboard break that could have come from Survivor’s ‘Vital Signs’ album, and an irresistible ‘Tough It Out’. The main set finished with another post-reunion live favourite in ‘Killed By Love’ with its participatory  ‘yay-yay-ohs’.

For many years the pair of encores has been the same, but while retaining the concept of a ballad showcase for Steve’s voice followed by an old favourite – they were completely overhauled. After Jem took centre stage to show off a new waistcoat and more importantly celebrate two years cancer free, he played a lengthy intro and accompanied Steve on the third of the new numbers, the ballad ‘Just Walk Away’. it is hardly my favourite on the album but was arranged exquisitely with Jim joining them mid-song for a sweet solo though the ever-reliable founding rhythm section of Merv Goldsworthy and Pete Jupp were given a bit of a rest.

Everyone was back and Jem made it four at the front with his portable keytar during ‘Heart Of The Matter’, one of ‘Indiscreet’s less heralded tracks but a fitting climax as I always remember it being the set closer in the early days.

This hour and 40 minute set struck the perfect balance between old and new, the songs casual fans would expect to hear and those to please the more committed. Coupled with the band’s affable stage presence it was yet another feel good evening of guaranteed excellence from Britain’s premier melodic rock band.
