Album review: MARIO VAYNE – The Moment

MARIO VAYNE - The Moment

Facebook [Release date 23.05.25]

I’ll get straight to the point, new album “The Moment” by Australia’s Mario Vayne is my favourite release of 2025 so far. I’d heard debut single “Rock n Roll Day” on Planet Rock and it’s Def Leppard meets Enuff Z Nuff vibe had me hooked from day one.

Massive sounding and nicely polished, the album is a modern album that harks back to an era that we all still love. There are elements of Def Leppard, Journey, Foreigner and Bryan Adams at play here and from the opening chords of “Diary of a Heart” I guarantee that you will be reaching for the volume control and giving it a good crank.

As far as highlights on “The Moment” go it would be easier to just give you the track listing. However, as well as the two afore mentioned tracks, I would also recommend starting with “Electric”, current single “Baby (Way You Love Me)”, “Diamond”, title-track “The Moment” and ballad “Sorry Ain’t Enough”.

The solid blend of great guitars, massive hooks and melodies (and let’s not overlook the quality of the songwriting here) make “The Moment” one of the most consistently good albums you will hear this year.

Hopefully tour dates will be announced soon. *****

Album review: STEELEYE SPAN – Conflict

steeleye-span-conflict

Park Records [Release date 23.05.25]

Always good to have a new album from folk rockers Steeleye Span and this is their 24th studio album. Still led by singer Maddy Prior, the rest of the band consists of Julian Littman (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Liam Genocky (drums), Andrew ‘Spud’ Sinclair (guitars), Roger Carey (bass) and Athena Octavaia (violin).

Maddy Prior on the album – “All traditional singers have sung modern and self- composed pieces alongside old songs. This album follows in that tradition. Some of these songs are from centuries past, and some from the last century, which, given the massive shift in our lived lives, I consider now almost traditional themselves, since the references are now obscure to most people. Yet others are totally new and address our immediate concerns.

We have named this album Conflict, as much to reflect the times we find ourselves in, but also the stretch and tear of our relationship with this planet that hosts us.”

Their take on the traditional ‘Over The Hills And Far Away’ was released prior to the album and is a perfect example of folk rock. ‘Sound Of The Drum’ proves Steeleye Span could have hit singles, if only they got heard outside of their fanbase and specialist music shows.

‘Low Flying’ is a fun listen featuring Julian Littman on vocals. Loving the chorus arrangement on this one and easy to see why this is already a live staple.

Steeleye go ska! Yes they do indeed on ‘Honey Bee’, which has an infectious ska groove and has a timely lyric about saving the bees. A band, that despite their roots in traditional folk music, always wrote timely and thought provoking lyrics.

A few songs on here have appeared on solo albums, namely ‘Blow Boys, Blow’ on Maddy Prior’s ‘Bib & Tuck’ album and ‘Genocide’, which appeared on a solo outing by former Steeleye Span bassist Rick Kemp. The latter is a fiery beast of a rocker with some sterling guitar. They also revisit an older Steeleye Span song in the shape of ‘Dogs & Ferrets’, sung a capella on this version.

Steeleye Span, once again in their ‘rockier’ mode, have produced another fine album that meets and exceeds the band’s own high musical standards. Grab this album and go see them live if they play near you as you won’t be disappointed. ****

Gig review: DEL BROMHAM- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 1 June 2025

DEL BROMHAM- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 1 June 2025

At a time of life when others may be taking things a bit easier, the evergreen Del Bromham made two trips down from Buckinghamshire on the M1 and M25 in the space of four days, first in Putney with Stray on the Wednesday and then Staines (or Staines-upon-Thames as we must now call it), on Sunday, under his own name. He has played a number of solo acoustic ‘songs and stories’ shows, but this one was a full electric effort featuring Stray bandmates Colin Kempster and Karl Randall. The feel was therefore not too dissimilar to Stray but with a greater emphasis on electric blues, though no ballads or acoustic numbers.

There can’t be many more convivial places to spend a Sunday afternoon than a Brewery enjoying some of their ales within view of their brewtanks, but it is also an excellent shaped space for live music, though on this occasion easily able to accommodate a die hard crowd on its circular tables. From the guitars on the walls to rock inspired names for their small batch beers, it has a rock’n’roll vibe to it, and they are trying to expand their live music schedule with more original bands- I have been a regular at Brave Rival’s Sunday matinee show here, and Chantel McGregor is about to be in town.

DEL BROMHAM- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 1 June 2025

After overcoming some logistical issues, Del opened appropriately with ‘Let’s Get the Show Started’ and the Texas blues like ‘House Of Love’, playing a Stratocaster as one of three guitars he swapped between. ‘The Well’s Run Dry’ showed his underrated songwriting skills, while ‘Slave’ had a more relaxed groove to it.

I did wonder whether we might get the odd Stray song and he obliged with ‘I Am’ from their most recent ‘About Time’ album. His usual quick witted repartee was in evidence but the theme of the afternoon, in as much as there was one, was to pay tribute to some of his inspirations as a young hopeful in sixties West London, many of whom he them encountered in his chequered musical career.

DEL BROMHAM- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 1 June 2025

One such was Tim Rose and his version of ‘Morning Dew’ was a powerful version in which his gravel tones even sounded a little like Steve Marriott. After the biographical ‘The Ballad of JD’, he paid tribute to another hero of his youth in Steve Winwood with a couple of his very best songs in Blind Faith’s ‘Can’t Find My Way Home’ and ‘Dear Mr Fantasy’. Both were extended jams showing off the quality of his rhythm section and Del’s flair with the wah-wah pedal, as well as teasing the audience.

The second half opened with Bobby Bland’s ‘This Time I’m Gone For Good’ (where I noticed some similarities with his more famous ‘Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of the City’) and ‘You Don’t Know How I Feel’, his guitar playing just as good as with Stray, albeit in a somewhat bluesier style.

DEL BROMHAM- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 1 June 2025

A story about sharing a bill with a young Gary Moore led onto a fine version of ‘Don’t Believe A Word’, in full length fashion with the slow blues leading into the rock out we are all familiar with. With an anecdote about misinterpreting the lyrics when Stray recorded the Cliff Richard cover, ‘Move It’ had a meaty guitar sound, then ‘Everybody Has To Sing the Blues’ sparked a bit of a singalong as he and Colin wandered into the crowd.

He ended with a couple of Stray songs from their early seventies masterpiece ‘Saturday Morning Pictures’, with some furious slide playing during ‘Leave It Out’, then ‘After the Storm’ with one colossal riff after another and a couple of false endings. Indeed the band were dragged back for an encore of a couple more Stray songs, albeit not the obvious ones in ‘Houdini’ and, bringing things up to date, ‘Living the Dream’. They completed a most convivial afternoon in the company of a great musician and entertainer.

Gig review: BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

With each passing tour Blue Oyster Cult somehow seem a hotter ticket. The days of struggling to fill places like the Mean Fiddler are long gone as they are packing larger venues, on this occasion a prestige show at the London Palladium. In fact they made a weekend of it as they subsequently announced a lower key date the night before at Islington Assembly Hall, under their Soft White Underbelly alter ego. Many fans enjoyed this double treat, but having bought a second row ticket for the Palladium I decided I would rather keep my powder dry for this one than take the edge off it.

There could be a variety of factors involved in this increasing interest, from the fact that mainmen Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma are 80 and 77 respectively, to their influence on modern bands (Ghost et al), though there were only a few younger fans present with the majority 60 or older.

BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

A support slot was a further way for When Rivers Meet to widen their exposure, not that they need it on the evidence of the fact that their new album ‘Addicted To You’ debuted at No 4 in the national charts days afterwards. Oddly they did not plug any songs from it, instead sticking to tried and tested numbers, beginning with ‘Did I Break the Law’, with Aaron Bond’s rhythmic slide accompanied by a crowd clapalong. ‘Never Coming Home’ saw some impressive vocal melodies from Grace Bond, who commanded the stage before switching to her slide mandolin for the latter part of the set.

Bassist Adam Bowers made a significant contribution to the funky undertow of  ‘Play My Game’, and both ‘My Babe Says That He Loves Me’ and ‘Trail to Avalon’, with Aaron and Grace sharing the vocal duties, got a good reception, suggesting they have the crossover appeal to a wider range of rock fans than just blues purists. However, after the usual medley of ‘Walking On the Wire’ segueing into ‘Free Man’, a ridiculously short set of under half an hour was over.

BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

To a plain but well-lit backdrop Blue Oyster Cult opened with ‘Dr. Music’, run of the mill by their standards, though with a nice organ solo from Richie Castellano and ‘Before the Kiss, a Redcap’, with vocals from Eric and Buck respectively.

Eric’s opening remarks, asking who had been at the Soft White Underbelly show, got perhaps the biggest cheers of the night, before saying they would swap a few songs around (no less than seven in fact) beginning with ‘Career of Evil’, namechecking co-writer Patti Smith. The set was a good mix of old and new so, preceded by the usual raising of imaginary beer cans, ‘The Golden Age Of Leather’ was followed in rather more concise fashion by Eric’s ‘That Was Me’, from the recent ‘The Symbol Remains’ album.

BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

At the start of the set a dapper looking Buck was playing a conventional and more aesthetically pleasing guitar, but had switched to his more familiar headless model with Swiss cheese-like holes by the time of ‘Burning For You’. It’s one of his trademark songs both vocally and with that fluently effortless melodic guitar style. Yet not even that, nor the efforts of bassist Danny Miranda, eyeballing the crowd with his wide-legged stance, managed to get anyone in the Palladium’s stalls out of their seats. It was not so much ‘On Your Feet or On Your Knees’ as ‘on your haunches’.

‘Cagey Cretins’ was one of a generous selection from probably my favourite BOC album ‘Secret Treaties’ and a very eighties sounding keyboard intro heralded one of the best receptions of the night for ‘Shooting Shark’, with prominent bass work and a superb guitar solo from Buck. It also appeared that he was taking the greater share of the lead vocals in the set. Eric’s voice has not aged as well and is thinner these days, but he still has plenty in the tank judging from a sprightly jog from one side of the stage to the other, and sounded just fine on ‘E.T.I.’ which was extended by some jamming between Buck and Richie as their guitars interwove very effectively.

BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

The latter seemed to be straining to be let off the leash and on ‘Hot Rails To Hell’ he mixed lead vocals with careering around the stage like an enthusiastic puppy. Then in one of the surprises of the night, Buck led a lively ‘Dancin’ In the Ruins’ with some added drum fills from Jules Radino. As one of their more AOR moments, and with ‘Club Ninja’ the album this teenager jumped aboard the BOC train, it was a personal favourite that would not have been shared by many.

However in contrast it was followed by a relatively rare live outing of one of their very finest moments in ‘Astronomy’. It also took the slot usually occupied by ‘Then Came the Last Days Of May’ as a vehicle for a remarkable long solo from Buck, confirming he is not only playing as well as ever but is sorely underrated as one of the most lyrical guitar players.

BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

Another from ‘Symbol Remains’ in ‘Tainted Blood’, sung by Richie, had a surprisingly good hook, and a further ‘Secret Treaties’ gem in ‘Flaming Telepaths’ led into the pair that traditionally end their main set. Eric theatrically invited us to hear the approach of ‘Godzilla’ and the song seemed newly energised as people sang along to the ‘history shows again and again’ line, then a lengthy Buck piece glided into ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’, extended as a vehicle for more of that mellifluous soloing, though I was shocked to turn round and even now see only the odd pocket of people on their feet.

No song is seemingly off limits in their set, and the encores began with a real obscurity in ‘Teen Archer’, moving onto the more familiar ‘Harvester Of Eyes’ and the usual closer of ‘Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll’. Eric went to the side of the drumkit to help out before coming down to join a four man jam at the lip of the stage, where fans were belatedly stood up, concluding a near two hour set.

BLUE OYSTER CULT- London Palladium, 25 May 2025

While many bands of their generation are badging their current tours as farewell ones, albeit of the extended variety, Blue Oyster Cult’s current slogan is ‘On Tour Forever’. Let’s hope therefore this wasn’t the last we see of this original and quirky band with a vast back catalogue to plunder.

Album review : GORGUTS – Considered Dead / Erosion Of Sanity (2CDs w/bonus tracks)

Cherry Red [Release date : 13.06.25]

Got to hand it to Cherry Red. Few labels are resurrecting the past glories of Metal like they are. Most who do aim for mainstream stuff, bands in the public eye, in the media.

But CR go for the niche stuff, the specialist sub genres. Like Technical Death Metal. Like Gorguts.

CD1 : Considered Dead (1990) w/2 bonus
CD2 : The Erosion Of Sanity (1993) w/2 bonus

Bands at the cutting edge of this sub genre made onto the roster of major labels, And thanks to outfits like Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Napalm Death forging a path, lower profile bands like Gorguts got signed.

Formed in Quebec by guitarist, vocalist, writer, Luc LeMay, they recorded and released their debut album, Considered Dead, in 1990.

The finger pickin’ melancholy of the wonderfully titled instrumental ‘And Then Came Lividity’ set us up for the howl and growl of ‘Stiff And Cold’ and the lurching rhythms of ‘Disincarnate’. Death metal grinding away at the wheel of gloomy reality, but with the occasional melodic relief, always welcome, always catching you by surprise.

Erosion of Sanity was a stripped down regression to the neanderthal beginnings of heavy metal, with added sharp edges and amp blowing technical dynamics.

Lemay stretches his gravel throated vocalisms around the dissonance of standout tracks ‘Condemned To Obscurity’ and ‘Orphans Of Sickness’, with the title track coming up on the inside. Even for HM fans, this progression was hard to handle.

A groundbreaking album perhaps, but occupying a niche so small that it became a commercial failure.

It was no “one-off” death metal event, but instead became the first chapter in a twisting tale that continually reinvented itself over the band’s next 3 albums. ***

Quick plays: ODETTE MICHELL, CLEMENTINE LOVELL, FREYA RAE

Odette Michell – The Queen of the Lowlands

Odette Michell – The Queen of the Lowlands [Release date 13.06.25] Bandcamp

Second studio album from Odette Michell, which includes guest musicians Chris Leslie (Fairport Convention), Phil Beer (Show of Hands), Ninebarrow and Calum Gilligan.

As Odettte says: “My approach to songwriting is to try to be authentic as possible while keeping a foothold in the folk tradition – it’s a balancing act but every song is personal to me at some level.”

Ninebarrow provide the perfect vocal accompaniment to ‘The Woodlark & the Fieldfare’, a soothing tune that also highlights Odette’s wonderfully melodious vocals. Daria Kulesh, who Odette performs with as part of Michell, Pfeiffer & Kulesh, work well together on ‘Flowers’, which despite its name is a murder ballad.

The lively ‘Lady Constance’ sits next to the mournful ‘Waterline’, inspired by pictures of rusting trawlers in the Fleetwood on the Flyde coast, destroyed by their owners to qualify for cash handouts from Brussels.

Much to enjoy on here with ‘Hourglass’, a duet with Calum Gilligan, a lovely uplifting folk song.

Odette Michell is most definitely a talent to watch and listen to on the folk scene. A finer mix of traditional folk sounds with a personal touch you’ll be hard pressed to top this year. ****

Clementine Lovell – Westbound

Clementine Lovell – Westbound [Release date 24.06.25] Bandcamp

Debut release from Clementine Lovell, singer and accordion player, who has enlisted a few guest musicians including Fairport Convention’s Ric Sanders and guitarist PJ Wright.

Clementine certainly opens the album with intent as her take on the traditional tune, ‘The Cuckoo’, clocks in at over seven minutes, including a superb accordion and fiddle play out. ‘Sparrow’ has an ethereal feel, whilst ‘Cottontail Hunting’ is a lively tune, almost Americana in sound.

The title track is a fine way to end the album on, featuring Ric Sanders and PJ Wright, it has a distinct Fairport sound about it in the musical arrangement.

One for those who like traditional folk singers, Clementine Lovell has a clear, distinct vocal that sometimes recalls Sandy Denny. An confident and assured debut release that bodes well for Clementine’s musical future. ***1/2

Freya Rae – Divergence

Freya Rae – Divergence [Release date 21.06.25]

Divergence is a project led by Freya Rae on flute, whistles and clarinet and she is joined by Siannie Moodie on clarsach and Tim Lane (Hidden Orchestra) on kit, percussion and the tongue drum. They are joined by Fraser Fifield (whistle, sax) and Eryan Rae (fiddle).

During lockdown in 2020 Freya Rae set herself a target of writing a new tune every week for twenty weeks. Now eleven of those tunes are now included on ‘Divergence’.

An all-instrumental affair, the album is a soothing, pleasant listen that keeps itself just out of the background music zone. Played with precision and skill, ‘Aye Yew’ is a highlight where whistle and sax combine to great effect. The sax of Fraser Fifield appears again on ‘Beetroot’, which not only wins song title of the year but is a fine piece of upbeat folk music with a jazzy vibe. ***

Album review: SPARKS – MAD!

Sparks - Mad

Transgressive [Release date 23.05.25]

‘Mad!’ is the latest snapshot of the Sparks aesthetic. It’s interwoven with elements of surreal humour and satire and is bolstered by immense interlocking vocal repetition, frantic rhythms and cinematic lyrics.

It’s a badge of honour with Sparks that they never repeat themselves either stylistically or thematically.

This of course doesn’t stop them from making the most of familiar musical structures and arrangements.

They always find room for densely repeated couplets, hooks and bv’s within filmic narratives over propulsive and percussive synth lines, while indulging in moments of gentle satire.

And somehow over the course of a 54 year career they have struck the perfect balance between familiarity and innovation.

While David Bowie, a similar musical chameleon, radically changed his style and image, Sparks have pursued a steady evolution, via original ideas, themes and musical diversity.

They’ve created their own art form which always feels like a natural part of where their muse takes them, bolstered by generations of fans who continue to support them.

With the exception of their late 70′s dalliance with German disco era, they have stood above the parapet and prospered by diving into the big blue.

‘Mad!’ is slightly different again. The ambivalent title ushers in a surreal musical journey imbued with elements of incredulity and perhaps frustration (amplified by the album cover art work), on an album that noticeably gains momentum from just past the half way mark onwards.

They open with the slamming ‘Do Things My Own Way’, which restates a staple of their later career, with their use of tension building rhythmic repetition.

What initially appears as unreconstructed synth pop, quickly reveals itself as something more substantial, with deftly repeated hooks, a percussive backing and a use of quiet-to-loud dynamic which frames an Ultravox style synth motif.

A hurried ‘call and response’ section is punctuated by various audio squalls reminiscent of 80’s synth infused Frank Zappa.

Their sheer exuberance helps them to overcome a brace of stodgy numbers, hardly in keeping with their Hollywood red carpet aspirations.

The obtuse ‘JanSport Backpack’ panders to their trademark eclecticism, while the sparsely arranged synth pop of ‘Hit Me, Baby’ veers too closely to 80’s disco.

Happily, Ron’s observational lyrics rise to the occasion, as the duo revel in the wonderfully titled ‘Running Up A Tab At The Hotel For The Fab’, with a string induced B movie feel, complete with Russell’s angst ridden vocals.

The more melodic ‘My Devotion’, is a mid-tempo contemplation on the way we obsess on everything from a relationship to our country, home-town, God, a Harley, a Jag and even our work:

“My devotion to you is about all that I do, got your name written on my shoe and I’m thinking about getting a tattoo.’

An additional airy flute sound over a pulsing synth line and overlapping vocal section gives it a sing-along quality.

‘Don’t Dog It’ marks the half way point with a portentous opening jagged piano and more quiet-to-loud dynamics leading to repeated vocal lines.

The subtly crafted ‘In Daylight’ uses a raspy synth, a faux chiming bell, tom-toms, rhythmic claps, and a catchy hook to evoke the daylight which Russell (in one of his many different character guises) is seemingly running away from: “I can’t approach you, since daylight reveals me, so I’ll just wait for the night to conceal me.”

The album’s intrinsic flow is further highlighted in the manic strings and cartoon voice of  ‘I-405’ Rules’, a warped ode to the San Diego Freeway.

It’s a classic Sparks track, right down to the ambivalent lyrics about a freeway which helps you get where you want to go, even if the music suggests something nightmarish.

They rack up the tension up on the incredibly dense ‘A Long Red Light’, which may also be part of the ’405′ experience.

The song is built on a tic-toc opening with feverish strings, fazed synths, and a repeated overlapping vocal collage with additional amoeba-like synth lines.

The tension is finally resolved on the following ‘Drowned In A Sea Of Tears’, a great pop song full of galloping strings, synths and angelic bv’s.

They pick up the pace again on the bombastic marching song ‘A Little Bit Of Light Banter’, which lives up to its title and is a de facto link piece leading to the sumptuous bookend of ‘Lord Have Mercy’.

The latter is a surprisingly polished pop song with Beatle style ‘dee dee’ bv’s and one of Russell’s best vocals. It’s a love song with an edgy subtext, on which the duo head for another layered vocal finale with an unexpected guitar solo.

As always, it’s their keen sense of dynamics that defines them. ****

Gig review: DANNY BOWES – The Junction, 2, Cambridge,1 June 2025

db2

Pretty much everyone who is a fan of British Hard Rock knows the story of Thunder’s lead singer Danny Bowes in regards to his stroke, the plummet down a set of stairs and the severe damage to his brain masking the stroke from the medical experts and leaving him in a coma for a while.

Still unable to perform as a vocalist currently, and with a cloud hanging over if he will ever again.

Danny has decided to tour the UK with the Maximum Chat show, a format of spoken word shows that he has visited before with tours with Ben Matthews and another with Luke Morley.

On a warm, windy Sunday on June the 1st 2025, the two lines outside the Cambridge Junction to enter are longer than I have ever seen for a show there (and I’ve seen a fair few). This, the first show of tour was sold out as are most of the other shows and the ones that are not, will most likely do so.

The audience take their seats to an empty stage with a lone armchair, lamp, coffee table, pot plants and a bottle of water. Show time and Danny appears, picks up his microphone, he looks pretty healthy considering his woes; there’s maybe a slight hint of a limp and the entire crowd rise to their feet and give him a standing ovation before he can say a word. Danny is visually taken aback and his first few words are low, maybe the mic needed its level adjusted or he needed to compose himself.

db1

There will be no spoilers in this review but I will give a general hint. The delivery was relaxed and Danny has always been one of the best raconteurs in the music business. Unafraid to say things as he sees them, swears a little bit (as he has said before this is Rock n Roll not the Sooty show), always funny, always a bit cheeky chappy and always honest and relateable.

He only briefly talks about his accident as an introduction then the chat begins in earnest. We are guided through his younger life and beginnings of his music career. I’ve seen him on a couple of these spoken word tours before and, having been a fan since 1990, I’ve seen plenty of video and magazine interviews and every tale told is a new one to me, not that I’d have cared hearing any again.

He’s chatting away so much and relaxed in his role of storyteller that’s he suddenly after looking at his watch exclaims “Fuck I am twenty minutes over the first part!’ He quickly informs us there is a box on stage and a pile of question cards and asks the audience to provide him with questions for Q&A sessions after the interval.

The second set involves the Terraplane days and the birth of Thunder, then moves onto the previously mentioned Q&A session. Danny answers in his normal sometimes blunt yet with a twinkle in his eye manner, some frankly silly questions are dealt with as are some truly touching ones which brought some ‘ahs’ from the ladies seated near me. Then it’s suddenly over.

I could have listened to him for hours more but Mr. Bowes had timed his show to perfection. Without a doubt, every person in the room would give anything to hear Danny belting out the likes of ‘Don’t Wait For Me’ like he did at Monsters Of Rock all those years ago.  Also, at the same time, every single one of us were happy he’s still with us and enjoyed just being in his company and listening to him talk.

An amazing night with not a note played and wasn’t needed too.

Album review: JOE HODGSON – Fields of Redemption

Pete Feenstra chatted to Joe Hodgson for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  Including tracks from the new album.  First broadcast 20 July 2025.

JOE HODGSON – Fields of Redemption

www.joehodgsonmusic.com [Release date 20.06.25]

Guitarist Joe Hodgson released his debut solo album ‘Apparitions’ in 2020 to wide critical acclaim and now he’s back with album number two, co-produced with Chris James Ryan (Keith Urban, Go West). Joining Joe are Philipp Groysboeck (drums), Vinzenz Benjamin (bass), Otger Garcia (Hammond organ), Paul McClure (bodhran), Joao Paulo Drumond (percussion) and Kelly O’Donohue (horns).

One minute Joe Hodgson is providing a “what if” musical moment on ‘Stick or Twist’ which sounds like AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ given a Robert Palmer makeover! Whereas on ‘You I Think Of’ treads that folk rock path beloved of Led Zeppelin. For a bit of jazz with a big band swing ‘Give Her What She Wants’ does the job, recalling Colin James and his Little Big Band. Hugely enjoyable and leaves a smile on the listener’s face.

‘Shapeshifting’ is great fun too, which has some wonderfully frantic guitar parts, followed by slower, soothing guitar playing. Similar to the sort of music Paul Gilbert often comes up with.

Although a mainly instrumental album, vocalist Glen Harkin is perfect for the bluesy ‘Since You Had a Hold on Me’, a definite album highlight.

Joe Hodgson is a fantastically talented guitarist, and unlike some guitar led albums this is no widdly snooze fest or nice background music, rather an album full of musical treats with no musical stone seemingly unturned. ****

Gig review: THE DARKER MY HORIZON – Acoustic Couch, Bracknell, 31 May 2025

tdmh

Coming out of gig retirement (well apart from the excellent folk gigs at Harwell Village Hall) for a rather fine night for hard rock.

Second time at The Acoustic Couch, which sadly is nearing its end as a live venue due to its lease not being renewed in August. The Acoustic Couch runs as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company and they have a fundraising page to try & raise enough funds to find a new home for live music in Bracknell. If you can please help the venue out, even by just sharing their fundraising links to gain more awareness.

Onto the music and rising rockers Revenant, who I heartily recommend you track down their ‘Best Medicine’ EP. The band consists of Sugarman Sam (vocals, guitars), Matthew Hudson (guitars), the impossibly tall Robin Nutley (bass) and Carl D (drums) who looked a bit like Glen Danzig!

Live they are a lively bunch with Sugarman Sam coming across as powerfully on vocals as he does on record. Songs like ‘Public Service Announcement’,  and their best song to date, ‘Back to Life’, sound even heavier live – yet never lose the melody – and show why this band are gaining such well deserved rave reviews, as well as increasing their fan base. Go see them at the Maid of Stone festival next month.

The Darker My Horizon are now into their tenth year, with a recently released new album ‘From Out of the Ashes’. Vocalist & guitarist Paul Stead is the only original member left and he is joined by guitarist Jamie Bannon, bassist Mike Wrigglesworth and drummer Russ Barnett.

Kicking off with ‘Hate’ from the aforementioned new album, the Darker My Horizon soon hit their stride and proceed to play a set full of melodic hard rock goodness. Heck, we even get a power ballad ‘In the End’, which doesn’t sound out of place in a set that includes the rifftastic ‘Gaslight’ and ‘Functional Dysfunctional’, the latter with its instant chorus, should be on the likes of Planet Rock’s daytime playlist.

The Darker My Horizon definitely set out to have fun both on stage and off, with the audience loving it, especially those enthusiastically pogoing around to the set’s closing anthem ‘Still Alive’.

Two bands, both performing their own original music and putting on a live show that leaves the audience leaving with a big smile on their faces. This is what rock n roll is all about…

Gig review: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND – Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND- Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

This side of the pond, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band gigs in arenas rather than stadia are as rare as hen’s teeth. My only previous one was at the 02 Arena soon after it opened back in 2007, so despite having seen them in the past two years in London and Dublin, when he announced dates at the Co-Op Live in Manchester (alongside others at Liverpool FC, but no London show) I decided to hang the expense and pay £500 for a pair of tickets and make an overnight trip from the capital.

It was my first time at this new venue and, other than the bad luck of gig crowds being swelled by a rearranged Man City game next door the same night, I was very impressed. It was more angular than the bowl shaped 02 and unusually had tiered seating behind the stage, yet appeared surprisingly compact considering it is the country’s largest indoor arena and the sound was excellent.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND- Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

When the ‘Land Of Hope And Dreams’ tour was announced, Bruce Springsteen had no new product to promote for once, but in the meantime last year’s US Presidential election and subsequent political developments in his home country gave him a fresh focus for the tour, which became big news when he revealed it at the first of the three Manchester shows.

A week on, after the E Street Band made their usual low key entry and their bandleader came on last, he launched straight into that much publicised broadside against the American administration but this time it led into opener ‘No Surrender’- I wonder if this was a riposte to President Trump’s public baiting in the meanwhile?
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND- Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

Relegated to second in the batting order, ‘Land Of Hope And Dreams’ was a prime example of how the expansion of the E Street Band, now numbering 18, results in a full sound, with fiddle and sax solos from Soozie Tyrell and Jake Clemons respectively and the horns and backing singers adding to the gospel feel. ‘Death To My Hometown’ had an equally huge sound as Jake and percussionist Antony Almonte beat out giant Irish marching drums, complemented by fiddle and Charlie Giordano’s accordion.

‘Seeds’ was more basic, initially with just a trio and Bruce playing one of many lead guitar solos, though I found ‘Somewhere In The Night’ a little too downbeat. Bringing things more up to date, ‘Rainmaker’, with Bruce again on lead guitar, was another picked for its allegorical political message, though things became more lively on ‘Promised Land’, Bruce taking his first trip round the edge of the crowd while the combination of his harmonica and Roy Bittan’s piano created the quintessential heartland rock sound. On ‘Reason To Believe’ Bruce cranked out a riff that sounded very similar to ‘Spirit In The Sky’ and it eventually involved the whole band in the closest they have ever come to blues rock.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND- Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

As Bruce began ‘The River’ its story was matched by a suitably sombre musical backing with the band playing in restrained fashion before he sang in falsetto in a vocal coda, then ‘Youngstown’ began in a similar musical and lyrical theme but developed in intensity with a feedback strewn solo from Nils Lofgren, leading intro a full on rock out with the surprise inclusion of ‘Murder Incorporated’, Bruce again playing the solo then jamming with Steve Van Zandt.

In contrast the final political statements of the evening preceded  ‘Long Walk Home’ which had a gospel feel with the backing singers and sax, ‘House Of A Thousand Guitars’ delivered solo by Bruce and ‘My City Of Ruins’, again given a revivalist theme as Bruce shouted ‘rise up’ and ‘with these hands’ to a horn backing.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND- Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

These speeches were well received, not least since his social activism is well known and the only surprise could be the venom with which they were expressed. Moreover, I always sense in this country that liberal ‘Guardianista’ types are his core constituency- how this would have played out in Middle America is a moot point!

A music site like GRTR! is not the place to discuss political right and wrong: suffice to say that my thought in the moment was that, had the Democrats made the case for democracy and accountability with the vigour and eloquence that Bruce did, we might be looking at a different course of history.

It was now time to lighten the mood for the rest of the set, starting with ‘Because The Night’, complete with Nils’ pirouetting party piece, though I thought vocally and musically it felt somewhat  ragged, and Bruce going into the crowd during ‘Ghosts’, for me the best up-tempo anthem he has written in many years.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND- Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

Ever the masters of pacing, the atmosphere grew and the sound became somehow bigger with each passing song, from ‘Wrecking Ball’ to ‘The Rising’ complete with its ‘na na na’ chant and reached fever pitch with a storming as usual ‘Badlands’ with the riff ringing out around the crowd. There was time though for a very special coda to the main set as Bruce whipped out his harmonica to begin ‘Thunder Road’ with Roy’s backing, with the crowd roaring the lyrics even above the band and an emotional closing sax and horn break.

The encores were firmly in crowd pleasing territory, with a strong emphasis on the ‘Born In The USA’ album, beginning with the title track featuring a closing flurry from Max Weinberg on the drums, then the anthem to end them all on ‘Born To Run’, though his voice seemed a little hoarse from sheer exuberance. ‘Glory Days’ saw Steve join him, sharing the mike for some banter and led straight into a joyful ‘Dancing In The Dark’, the horn section now balancing out those eighties style synths.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND- Co-Op Live, Manchester, 20 May 2025

After his usual introductions and rap about the E Street Band, the brassy ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze Out’ kept up the atmosphere, with Bruce going deep into the middle of a delighted crowd, while remembering to point to the video screen for the line ‘when the big man joined the band’. He returned to the stage, sporting a green baseball cap as a souvenir of his trip, for one final song. His cover of Dylan’s ‘Chimes Of Freedom’ palled with what had gone before but made sense in the overall context.

The longest of the three Manchester shows at 2 hours and 50 minutes, by the very highest standards it wasn’t the greatest show of theirs I’ve seen, being too restrained for that. But if the first half of the show highlighted his political voice, the second proved that for musical escapism, no one does it more joyously than the E Street Band.

Gig review: KALANDRA – The Tivoli, Buckley, 29 May 2025

KALANDRA - The Tivoli, Buckley, 29 May 2025

‘A Frame Of Mind’ has been a favourite album of mine and made my ‘Best of 2024′ and I was sorry not to have seen the band playing a brief UK tour in late September last year. I couldn’t believe that they were back for another short UK spring tour and not a million miles away at a favourite venue.

The band’s blend of melancholic indie folk is probably best suited to an arts centre or small theatre, so a tour that includes an essentially rock venue like the 100-years-old Tivoli (wonderful as it is) is intriguing. With a gig at close-by Liverpool a few days earlier surely attendance wouldn’t be great? Well, the band’s singer called it intimate. Maybe there were a lot of “no-shows” a trend venue manager Roki told us was on the increase where punters buy tickets but don’t show up.  This isn’t any good for bar sales.

KALANDRA - The Tivoli, Buckley, 29 May 2025

Since their debut EP in 2017 Kalandra have never lost their original indie-folk style but for wider acceptance I wondered if they might start to dilute this aspect. On the basis of this gig, probably not.  Reading between the lines it seems this band are on a journey, and will maybe go where the mood takes them rather than any abject commerciality.

The setlist freely mixed the rockier with the folksy and weighted slightly more to their equally excellent debut ‘The Line’.  Only ‘A Life Worth Living’ seemed a glowing omission from the ‘A Frame Of Mind’ selection and it would have been good to hear ‘I’ll Get There One Day’ (especially the end playout).  ‘I Am’ and ‘The State Of The World’ were particularly impressive as expected.

‘Bukkehorn Jam’ was an instrumental led by Jogeir Daae Maeland’s horn (ooh missus) whilst the beautiful ‘Virkelighetens Etterklang’, rousing ‘Ensom’ and closer ‘Bardaginn’ sung in native tongue further attested the captivating vocals of Katrine who studied for a time in Liverpool (at LIPA).

The sonic textures weaved by fellow band members (with Henrik Dullum deputising for Oskar Johnsen Rydh on drums) were also convincing although aided by backing tape. Energetic and ethereal in equal measure.  And at times coming across like the soundtrack to a Scandi Noir thriller populated by marauding Vikings.

KALANDRA - The Tivoli, Buckley, 29 May 2025

Reading the album credits for the first time (where is the lyric booklet?) it seems that Katrine has spent some time in therapy and there is a life affirming spirit present in the music and an undercurrent to “take care of ourselves” and the planet.  We can all identify with this and we must bear in mind that Kalandra like all artists have been scuppered by the pandemic.  Their debut album was released in October 2020.

The band have been in existence for 13 years and need to be more widely known, certainly outside their native Norway. Another album and tour should crack it.

Setlist: The Waiting Game/Slow Motion/Naive/I Am/Virkelighetens Etterklang/Bukkehorn jam/Borders/Untie The Knot/Segla/Ensom/Are You Ready?/It Gets Easier/The State Of The World/Helvegen/Brave New World/Bardaginn
  • A word about tonight’s support multi-instrumentalist Natalie Evans.  We caught the tail end of her short set but  ‘Movements’ her current album will repay further investigation.

Album review : RENAISSANCE – Running Hard – The Albums 1974-76 (4 CDs)

Cherry Red [Release date: 30.05.25]

This 4 CD Renaissance boxset comprises:

CD1 : Turn Of The Cards (1974)
CD2 : Scheherazade And Other Stories (1975)
CD3 : Live At Carnegie Hall Part 1 (1976)
CD3 : Live At Carnegie Hall Part 2 (1976)

Renaissance’s symphonic orchestral rock was described rather dismissively as Progressive Rock by the US music media, but proved to be much more popular than they or the label forecast.

Turn Of The Cards and Scheherazade made a considerable dent in the US and Canadian charts, leading to a series of sold out shows at Carnegie Hall in 1976. All documented here.

There’s a weight of detail that makes these recordings more interesting than they already are. The liner notes are a wealth of information, nicely annotated.

After the inevitable rock band line up changes, as life kept interfering, the band settled into Annie Haslam (vocals), Michael Dunford (acoustic guitars), John Tout (keyboards, vocals), Jon Camp (bass, vocals) and Terry Sullivan (drums).

Turn Of The Cards was produced by Richard Gottehrer, former Brill Building songwriter, member of The Strangeloves, and much more.  Renaissance seemed like an appropriate vehicle for his polymath skills.

The band were using symphonic orchestral forms in revolutionary and foundational ways, bringing together piano, accoustic guitar, bass, drums, horns and strings.

Most notably borrowing from French composer Jehan Alaine’s “Litanies” as the basis for ‘Running Hard’s melodic phrasing, and Giazotto’s “Adagio In G Minor”’s melody for ‘Cold Is Being’.

The progrock balladry of ‘I Think Of You’ and the drama of ‘Mother Russia’, based on Solzhenitsyn’s writing, hold their own against the classical music sensibilities of ‘Things I Don’t Understand’ and ‘I Think Of You’s visceral power.

The line between classical and rock had been well and truly blurred.

The follow up, Scheherazade And Other Stories met with universal acclaim, bringing onboard a consistency and musical invention that surpassed Turn Of The Cards. And studiously avoiding the self-conscious pastiche that characterised some of the previous album’s less powerful moments.

A year later they were joined onstage at New York’s Carnegie Hall by the city’s Philharmonic Orchestra.  The setlist was a cherry picked choice of cuts from the two albums, plus the occasional dip into the past.

The sound of the crowd initially seems detached from the music being played onstage. But it’s just a matter of tuning in, as moments later a Mexican wave of noise rolls through the hall in a delayed action frenzy of enthusiasm…

By third track, ‘Kiev’, majestic in its solemnity, the mix is good, the rhythm section has been brought up and is chiming sweetly with a dominant piano. The singers have found their voice, we’re loving the gig, and looking forward to a two hour immersive experience. ****1/2

Album review: TRAGIK – Crescendo

Tragik-Crescendo

Rock Company [Release date 28.05.25]

Tragik are back with album number thirteen and their first in two years, which is some gap for them, although Phil Vincent has been busy with his other musical projects. Joining him are Vince O’Regan, who lays down the rather splendid lead guitar solos, and the rhythm section of Damian D’Ercole (bass) and Dirk Phillips (drums).

Bachman Turner Overdrive’s ‘Givin’ it all Away’ is a balls to the wall cover and most enjoyable.

A couple of co-writes on ‘Living’ and ‘Human’ with James Kennedy. ‘Living’ is straight ahead rocker, whilst ‘Human’ takes the ballad route, with Phil’s vocals backed by piano at the start before the song morphs into a satisfying power ballad.

Elsewhere, ‘Beyond’ is a top draw melodic rock tune and quite possibly one of his best songs in recent times. ‘Phoenix Rising’ and ‘Burn It Down’ stick to the Tragik hard rock template, with ‘Judas’ seeing the album out in a flurry of riffs.

Always hard to suggest where to start to new listeners to the many works of Phil Vincent, however, this latest Tragik album is a perfect place to start. As for existing fans, they doubtless will enjoy this one. ***1/2

Gig review: CHANTEL McGREGOR – The 100 Club, London, 23 May 2025

CHANTEL MCGREGOR - The 100 Club, London, 23 May 2025

Before concentrating on Chantel’s set, a quick word about Blue Nation, who kick off proceedings tonight with a highly entertaining 45 minute set. The Brummie band have some great songs and a ‘let’s have fun’ ethic that shines through their terrific take on the blues rock genre.

You must have something about you to stand out in a pretty crowded field and these guys most definitely have it. Shades of Cream, Free, Zep and the more up to date sounds of the likes of Rival Sons abound. Having seen Neil and Luke supporting other acts a couple of times as a duo it was extra nice to see them with drummer Nick as well. Hopefully will catch them as a headline act before too long but if you see them on the bill, make the effort to see them, you’ll love it!

There is a great deal riding on this gig for Chantel McGregor. Her latest album, ‘The Healing’ is out today and this is day one of the tour in support of the release.

For the majority in attendance tonight this is their first chance to hear the new material as McGregor made the conscious decision not to play any of the new tracks live, prior to today but, after several weeks of intensive rehearsals McGregor and her band (Colin Sutton (bass) Thom Gardner (drums) and tonight’s special guest, Jamie Brooks (keyboards) seem relaxed, but focused, as they take to the stage.

CHANTEL MCGREGOR - The 100 Club, London, 23 May 2025

A collective deep breath, a silent, ‘let’s do this’ and the band launch into the album opener, ‘I Will Breathe’. The powerful prog influenced riff immediately getting heads nodding in the audience and there is a broad grin on McGregor ‘s face, one minute in and that weight of expectation is lifted and, already, we know we are in for a special night! ‘Broken Heartless Liar’, glorious, pure, unadulterated rock follows and now those smiles are spreading across the stage and out into the packed crowd.

CHANTEL MCGREGOR - The 100 Club, London, 23 May 2025

It’s back to the previous album, ‘Lose Control’ next with the haunting, ‘Eternal Dream’ before we return to the latest release and one of the more commercial tracks on the album, ‘Stand On My Own’.

Ultimately we will be hearing every track of ‘The Healing’ tonight and it’s therefore no surprise that we are now treated to three more tracks from 2016’s ‘Lose Control’, including fan favourite, ‘Take The Power’ giving Chantel and the band the chance to stretch out in familiar territory before we return to the new album and the shimmering guitar of ‘Tears’.

What is coming across clearly with this new material is McGregor’s growth as a songwriter, with some stunning, understated guitar work and a real maturity in the lyric department. It’s abundantly clear just how much performing these songs means to Chantel and, more importantly, she is taking us all along on the journey with her.

After a last dip back to 2016, with ‘Burn Your Anger’ it’s another double from the new album; beginning with its haunting guitar intro, reminiscent of latter day Marillion, ‘Echoes’ builds to a spine tingling guitar solo, then it’s straight into ‘Undercover’, a great rock track, driven along brilliantly by the dynamic engine room of Colin and Thom. These guys are on their game all night and it’s clear they are having as much fun as the rest of us!

CHANTEL MCGREGOR - The 100 Club, London, 23 May 2025

An impromptu rendition of ‘Creep’ from Chantel and Jamie gives us all the chance to draw breath before the final three songs of the night, beginning with the ever popular ‘April’ in which the whole band get the chance to stretch out.

No one performance of this track is the same and tonight the band absolutely nail it. And talking about nailing it, the highlight of the night for me is the epic, mind blowing, incredible, ‘Truth Will Out’! It’s no secret that this is my favourite track on the new album but, can they bring its layers of complexity to the live stage? The answer is an emphatic yes! Worth the price of admission on its own this is an absolute beast of a song, its Prog influences displayed loud and proud with more stunning guitar work and an incredible vocal performance from Chantel that sends shivers down your spine.

CHANTEL MCGREGOR - The 100 Club, London, 23 May 2025

The set closes with the deeply emotional title track from ‘The Healing’. A song of hope and belief that, ultimately, all will be well no matter what life throws at you. It’s a fitting end to a marvellous first night, and the reaction of the crowd proves emphatically that, all the hard work leading up to this moment has well and truly been worth it.

Make no mistake this is a Chantel McGregor we have not seen before. This is anthemic rock, progressive in nature and sound and I urge you to catch her on this tour, you will absolutely love it!

Album review : THE SPEAKER WARS – s/t

Frontiers Music [Release date 23.05.25]

Writer/producer, Stan Lynch and singer/musician, Jon Christopher Davis crossed paths several years ago in Nashville. Songwriters both, they discovered an emotional connection, subsequently writing a bunch of songs together. This would eventually manifest itself as The Speaker Wars’ debut album.

There won’t be many rock fans who haven’t heard of Lynch. He was a founder member of the Heartbreakers along with Tom Petty.

You can hear Petty’s influence here, along with the distinctive sound of artists like Don Henley and Bruce Springsteen, all who have had a powerful influence on Speaker Wars’ music.

The teaser trailer tracks do what they’re intended to do. They whet our appetites, they capture our attention, they announce a major talent. It’s clear that the pair’s songwriting chops and individual talents are of the highest calibre.

Singles ‘The Forgiveness Tree’ and ‘You Make Every Lie Come True’ have been out for a while now. Alone, these songs are overflowing with the pair’s conviction in their ability as artists and love of their art.

With a drums, percussion, bass, guitars and keyboards underpinning, Davis turns his muscle and blood vocals on ‘It Ain’t Easy’s emotional turmoil into a Tom Petty party trick. Fabulous track, with a fabulous arrangement, smoothing the sharp edges with pop and rock harmonic textures.

Daringly, they mix even more classic pop elements into ‘Taste Of Heaven’. An harmonium intro; eloquent, Harrison like axework, and a rough edged, questioning, Lennon-esque vocal … like Cheap Trick doing a Beatles’ song … turn this track into a glorious piece of music, magnifying all that’s best about the pair’s whip smart songwriting.

The gnarly ‘Trader South’ and the balladic ‘Leave Him’ are cast from a traditional Country mould.

It’s tough to be original in Nashville of course. And both artists prove themselves to be writers rooted in tradition, but The Speaker Wars amply demonstrates that they refuse to be tamed by it.

And by picking up on the classic elements of rock, country, and mainstream pop, then moulding and shaping them into their own likeness, they’ve delivered one of the year’s better albums, no question. ****1/2

Gig review: MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

The first ever Mayhem Festival was a showcase for the 21st century generation of Swedish glam bands, both new and with a longer pedigree. The format was that the three co- headliners would all play sets of equal length, though swap the running order between this London date and the other shows in Nottingham and Wakefield.

It had the advantage of being at one of my favourite but underused venues, whose unusual setting in the basement of some student buildings obscures the fact that once you go into the main room it is well shaped, decent sized and with a nice high stage. However, five bands meant for an early 520pm start on a working day and I rushed to get there, only making it as Smoking Snakes finished their first song, with a decent crowd already in attendance.  MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

The young band from Gothenburg were a solid outfit with the raspy tones of singer Brett Martin reminding me of WASP’s Blackie Lawless and though ‘Excited’ boasted the clichéd ‘fire/higher’ rhyming lyric, ‘Sole Survivors’ was an impressive song with a fine solo from Leo Razor. After songs like ‘Run For Your Life’ and ‘There Is No Tomorrow’, ‘Rocking To the Morning Light’ with some audience participation ended a short but promising set.

The more experienced Toxic Rose were next, looking like a cross between Manowar and Judas Priest in studded and padded leathers. I had heard talk before that they were by some way the most metallic on the bill, and yet on  openers ‘Domination’ and ‘In For the Kill’, the taped keyboards seemed more prominent than the guitars.

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

Despite the growling backing vocals that are not to my taste, their chorus hooks were actually very melodic, notably on the almost Eclipse-like  ‘Blood On Blood’.  During ‘Set Me Free’ I was entertained by singer Andy Lipstixx (sic) drinking and spilling ‘blood’ out of a skull chalice, before a half hour set that I enjoyed far more than expected ended with ‘A Song For the Weak’.

The first of the three main attractions were also those least familiar to me, though I’d heard the name of The Cruel Intentions from magazines and gig listings. Of all the bands they were closer to the scuzziness of Scandinavian sleaze pioneers like the Backyard Babies as they opened with ‘City of Lice’ and ‘Chemical Vacation’ while the music also had a punky edge, very evident on ‘Genie’s Got a Problem’.

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

Lean singer Lizzy DeVine had one of those higher pitched, almost wheezing voices, reminiscent of Faster Pussycat’s Taime Downe, both singing and in his spoken intros. I was impressed with lead guitarist Kristian Nygaard Solhaug who had a nice classic tone to him but they were never really going to be my thing.

However I was in a minority as ‘Sunrise Over Sunset’ was rapturously received and there was a series of singalongs to ‘Kerosene’ and ‘Chaos in a Bombshell’, while ‘Go F— Yourself’ (surely not a tribute to Donald Fagen’s new catch[phrase?) featured the band’s name in the lyrics and arms were waving to the closing ‘who oahs’.

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

However after ‘Jawbreaker’, ‘Shake Your Head’ and ‘Sick Adrenaline’, a fast paced set came to a rather abrupt end after 50 minutes. While I wasn't too upset as their style was becoming a bit repetitive by then, their fans may have felt a little short changed.

Crazy Lixx, who I've seen at numerous melodic rock festivals, then headlining London three years ago, were to be frank my main reason for attending. They brought a professionalism both in the stage presentation with a couple of roll up banners with their logo, but also their stage presence.

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

Singer Danny Rexon commanded the stage in between three towering and hirsute bandmates as guitarists Jens Lundgren and Chrisse Olsson reeled off solo after solo in their slightly different but complementary styles and bassist Jens Andersson the epitome of cool with his stage poses.

The opening pair of ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’ and ‘Hell Raising Women’ actually felt somewhat average but the first of a trio in the set from latest album ‘Thrill Of the Bite’ in ‘Little Miss Dangerous’ was a real grower, setting the scene nicely for the superior ‘Silent Thunder’ and ‘Rise Above’.

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

However they played an ace card with a cover of ‘Sword and Stone’, the Kiss reject then  made famous by Bonfire, and bearing all the hallmarks of its co-writer Desmond Child. Then after ballad ‘Hunt For Danger’ they rivalled Toxic Rose in the prop department as Danny came on stage in a horror mask and wielding a dagger-shaped microphone for ‘XIII’.

Just as it felt things were getting started, it was actually time for the final two songs: ‘Blame It On Love’ was more melodic and mid- pocket, while a new song ‘Who Said Rock And Roll Is Dead’ was a fun track suitable for live participation, though I would have preferred old anthems ‘21 Till I Die’ or ‘The Sound Of the Loud Minority’ as the final track.

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

The night was seen out by Crashdiet who have the longest (and most chequered) history as something of the doyen of the new generation of Swedish acts. As if to prove it, ‘Riot In Everyone’ was a suitable anthemic opener with its ‘we’re the kids of the underground’ chorus, followed by ‘Queen Obscene’.

The latest in a long line of singers, John Elliot, was a good frontman with long blonde hair straight out of Swedish central casting, though the music felt a bit more basic than that of Crazy Lixx, largely because they had one guitarist rather than two to share the burdens of rhythm and lead. Their songs though were quite diverse, from the aggression of ‘Cocaine Cowboys’ and ‘Reptile’ to the more commercial  ‘Together Whatever’.

‘Falling Rain’ saw the crowd go crazy but after ‘Chemical’ and two of several trips back to their 2005 debut ‘Rest In Sleaze’ album in ‘Straight Out Of Hell’, and a particularly convincing  ’Breakin’ the Chains’, the set came to an abrupt and premature end.

MAYHEM ROCK FESTIVAL- 229 Club, London, 16 May 2025

Fortunately there was an encore of an impressive trio, starting with ‘Change the World’. ‘It’s a Miracle’ could have been a hit in the hands of the likes of Poison, then, unlike Crazy Lixx, they did end with their strongest and signature song in ‘Generation Wild’. I could not resist joining a by now thinner crowd in jumping to its hook fuelled chorus. It was a perfect close to a highly enjoyable mini-festival, an anthem for the new breed of Swedish glam on a night where we got plenty of it in all its various forms.

Gig review: QUARANTUNE ROCKS – The Victoria, Coalville, Leicestershire, 17 May 2025

King Kraken - QUARANTUNE ROCKS - The Victoria, Coalville, Leicestershire, 17 May 2025

As many of you know, Quarantune Rocks was set up as a music haven during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Established by music fans for music fans, it quickly grew into a friendly, music supporting group that decided as soon as restrictions lifted to hold a live music event, supporting bands and small music venues, donating profit to the Music Venue Trust.

Here we are, in May 2025, running our fourth live festival at the Victoria Bikers Pub in Leicestershire.

The sun is out, we have opted to enjoy the air and use the outside stage as much as possible, the stage is set, the sound check is done and we are surrounded by QR family this feels good!

Our opener is Kromiius, a 4-piece, from Oxfordshire, who give us a cracking start to the event, belting out their original yet very classic rock style songs and riffs and gaining new fans as they rip through their set. A great trailblazer what was to come.  Check out their recent singles, ‘November’ and ‘Eyes Wide Open’.

Next up are Fall From Ruin, from Swindon, they’ve graced our stage before, changed lead singer and are back to deliver what they do best, which is good melodic rock with some style!

Bare Knuckle Asylum, our house band, are next up and how this band has grown, delivering hard rock with high energy and precision, they’re finalists in Metal to the Masses and it’s clear to see why. This band is all about the songs, the musicianship and presence. Check out ‘Dive Bomber’ and ‘Boudicca’ amongst their repertoire for a taster.

QUARANTUNE ROCKS - The Victoria, Coalville, Leicestershire, 17 May 2025

Guns For Girls delivered a blistering set as a 3-piece.  Always a Quarantune Rocks favourite they thunder through their set getting the crowd engaged and delivering a brilliant cover of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, they set the stage on fire and it was all over too soon. Check out ‘Universal Icebreaker’ and ‘Finale’ for a taster.

JoanOvArc - QUARANTUNE ROCKS - The Victoria, Coalville, Leicestershire, 17 May 2025

Quarantune Rocks has always tried to showcase and support women in rock and JoanOvArc are no exception. An all female rock band, they set about tearing the stage up with Emma at the helm, opening with ‘Silver Sun’ and showcasing the talented band they are, ripping through a packed set to the delight of the QR family, winning new fans in the process, these girls absolutely rock!

Revenant - QUARANTUNE ROCKS - The Victoria, Coalville, Leicestershire, 17 May 2025

Next up Revenant, what is there to say other than I suspect this band is not long for smaller venues and you should catch them if you get the opportunity! They deliver on every level and sound so tight live, you’d think they’d been together years, southern influences, absolutely classic rock with well crafted lyrics. What a set!

Our metal gods, King Kraken headline the indoor stage, delivering their new album, March Of The Gods live interspersed with classic Kraken favourites. When Mark unleashes that guttural roar, it’s hard to believe that this is that same voice that then belts out ‘Hero’. A few tears fall in the audience such is the poignancy of this track dedicated to his Father, and resonating with many.

A favourite of the QR team and family, it’s no wonder this band is being played on mainstream radio and are a huge festival name, we are so lucky to have them here with us; there’s no doubt King Kraken are metal gods and we love em! Closing out with ‘Chainsaw Saviour’, they bring Quarantune Rocks 2025 to a close … what a day, what a cracking line up, and what great music.

Thanks to the team at the Vic for hosting us as ever, big thanks to our amazing sound engineer and to the legend that is Steve Russ on videography. Thanks to everyone who joined us, danced and sang along, to my fellow admins – thank you, team! Quarantune does indeed rock and long may it continue.

EP review: HAXAN – Death Of Me

HAXAN - Death Of Me

www.haxan.co.uk [Release date 28.05.25]

South Wales rock trio Häxan return with their highly anticipated EP ‘Death Of Me’, a blistering follow up to their acclaimed debut album, ‘White Noise.’

Produced by Grammy nominated Romesh Dodangoda (Motörhead, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet For My Valentine), Häxan’s new EP showcases the band’s evolution, blending rock and metal influences – bigger, bolder and more intense. From the uncompromising title track ‘Death Of Me’, to new single release ‘Thirteenth Hour’, Häxan delivers big riffs, big vocals and driving energy, setting the stage for what’s to come.

Having seen Häxan in action at Call of the Wild Festival in 2024, I was immediately drawn in by their delivery of heavy riffs and outstanding vocal tone, and have been a fan ever since.  I was very keen to hear this new EP, so let’s dive in!

The metal influence is at the forefront with opening and title track ‘Death Of Me’ delivering a fast paced adrenaline rush, laced with smooth licks and riffs expertly blended into a belter of an opening EP track.

‘Siren’ – oh my gosh! The overall vocal was like a rock siren was drawing you in, this track has a punk feel with the quintessential drum line and the riffs are so damn catchy complemented with the drop downs, giving it that bad ass metal tone.

These ladies are really tearing it up.  The guitar solo hits hard and the addition of vocal harmonies is so good!

‘Thirteenth Hour’ my absolute favourite of this EP! It has everything I could have wanted and more. This is so so powerful! Everything  perfect! I feel this is a true showcase of their talent. It is haunting and beautiful!  Laced with tones of goth rock, the instrumental breakdown coming in around the middle section of the track, leads up to an absolute explosion of an ending! WOW!!

‘Burn Alive’ is straight out of Salem! This was metal as hell! The riffs absolutely electric and the vocal so haunting!

‘Fight Fire With Fire’ with connotations of not only back when the witch trials were common practice but also having to fight through challenges life may face. Very clever. The high notes on this and the melodic breakdown make it an extremely stand out track!

‘Collide’ is the closing track of the EP, starting slower in pace, yet still very melodic, however it builds into a crashing crescendo with percussion precision that makes it a truly incredible closing track.

This dynamic trio never fall short of delivering. I feel everything has been cranked up to 1000! I know these ladies can play and are incredibly talented, so being able to experience this before the official release was an honour!

Everything is extremely cohesive and well blended, from the bass line and drums to the impressive guitar riffs and the vocal harmonies some of the best I’ve heard.

I love it when bands crank it up.  This is one heck of an EP and one that I genuinely feel deserves its praise.  *****

Album review: THE DEAD DAISIES – Lookin’ For Trouble

THE DEAD DAISIES - Lookin' For Trouble

SPV [Release date 30.05.25]

This is the eighth studio album from the band and marks a diversion from the usual formula, an album of blues covers. It could be construed as a mark-time affair before – in this band’s case – the arrival of a new vocalist. But John Corabi returned to the band for ‘Light ‘Em Up’ following two albums with Glenn Hughes and seems to have settled back in.

Those two albums were unsurprisingly all the better for Hughes’ contribution – ‘Radiance’ is particularly impressive – and it gives the impression that, for all the games of personnel musical chairs, The Dead Daisies have struggled in terms of consistency since their beginnings back in 2012 . It seems also that the band isn’t just a vanity project for guitarist/founder David Lowy.

For a band including the likes of Doug Aldrich this album is never going to be short on musical (and muscular) pyrotechnics but do they bring anything fresh to these blues standards? Probably not, it smacks of really good roadhouse band in the early 1990s.

Paying dues to the blues on album in some shape or form is probably on the “to do” list of most classic hard rockers and ‘Lookin’ For Trouble’ in the main plays out well.  There’s little deviation from the original templates and in truth we’ve heard the stuff played just as well from artists like Jeff Healey, Pat Travers and Gary Moore. Songs like ‘Boom Boom’ and ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’ although Aldrich does elevate ‘The Thrill Has Gone’ together with an impassioned vocal from Corabi.

Mark time? Maybe. Last year’s ‘Light ‘Em Up’ was disappointing given the undoubted talent and pedigree on display. What this band now needs is a bunch of killer originals to fully address our expectation and, to be honest, short attention span. ***

Album review : RONNIE ROMERO – Live At Rock Imperium Festival (CD+DVD)

Frontiers [Release date : 23.05.25]

Ronnie Romero’s merge of heavyweight hard rock and high powered melodic metal may well have been built on Dio’s lasting legacy, but as time as progressed he’s clearly found his own metier.

And in performing live he’s found the ideal platform. Last year’s Spanish Rock Imperium Festival (in Cartagena) saw him on Day 1 (of 3), exhibiting his vocal fire and ice on the same stage as Extreme, Uriah Heep and headliner, Judas Priest.

With the exception of a couple of songs – ‘Ferryman’ and ‘The Last Ship’, both from his Ferrymen albums – the set consists entirely of material from his recent Too Many Lies Too Many Masters album (2023).

We reviewed it on release, saying it was “A rock hard, hard rockin’ album, with Romero cranking the machine back to his days with Rainbow and Sunstorm”.

Sometimes the technical expertise deployed in the studio can be lacking in emotion: perfection can often inhibit the expression of feeling. Romero counters that live…his voice has soul, he keeps a tight rein on the vocal melodies and he delivers with emotion and conviction.

The songs from Too Many Lies… brimful of sturdy tunes and robust choruses… are a perfect fit. Romero and his musical partner in crime, guitarist Jose Rubio, are on fire, blazing through set openers ‘Girl On The Moon’, ‘I’ve Been Losing You’ and ‘Chased By Shadows’ with a driving, relentless energy, They’re on stage to entertain. Yes, there are a few bumps and bruises, but that’s what live is.

‘Not Just A Nightmare’ and ‘The Last Ship’ are exciting urban rock songs. Arguably, they lack the sophistication sometimes needed, but live they exhibit a sense of freedom, of liberation. Real crowd pleasers.

Fittingly, Romero closes the set with a tribute to Ronnie James Dio, ‘Rainbow In the Dark’. ***1/2

Gig review: BRYAN ADAMS – 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

BRYAN ADAMS - 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

After last year’s second set of Albert Hall residencies, it was back to a more conventional tour for Bryan Adams. Considering he hasn’t had a hit in years and it has been his photography if anything that has kept him in the public eye, it was an impressive feat to all but sell out the London date at the 02, where a scan of the queues revealed that the audience was a mix of ages and types, almost like a microcosm of middle England.

With no support as usual, a few minutes before he went on stage a giant inflatable boxing glove drifted across the stage, marking the theme of forthcoming album ‘Roll With The Punches’, and indeed he opened with the title track, satisfyingly rocky, even with a garage-like solo from Keith Scott, and almost harking back to the ‘Waking Up The Neighbours’ album.

BRYAN ADAMS - 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

He may not have been playing ‘Reckless’ in full this time, but casually he tossed in his first two UK hits ‘Run To You’ and ‘Somebody’ at the start of the set. They were so authentically delivered, they probably sounded little different from when I first saw him at Hammersmith some 40 years ago, though there was one change, as they were down to a four piece with no permanent bassist, Bryan filling the void on some but by no means all of the songs.

I was particularly delighted to hear ‘18 Til I Die’ as it was one of the few songs I genuinely regretted missing the night he played the patchy album in full at the Albert Hall. The lyrics to this great fist puncher were flashed on the big screen, though how ironic it is that the 65th birthday that seemed so far away is now in the Canadian’s rear view mirror.

BRYAN ADAMS - 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

‘Cloud Number Nine’ was dreary as usual but ample consolation came in new song ‘Make Up Your Mind’, his first in years to hark back to those halcyon ‘Cuts Like A Knife’ and ‘Reckless’ days  of raw-edged but melodic heartland rock. Talking of ‘Reckless’, there were a couple more in ‘Heaven’, now slightly more up tempo and even with a dance oriented groove, and – preceded by his usual Tina Turner tribute – ‘It’s Only Love’, the flamboyant Keith teasing with his ragged guitar solo which had multiple false endings.

Bryan Adams is a master of getting the crowd involved and conducted some dancing during ‘You Belong To Me’, with a snatch of ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, and the joyful atmosphere continued with ‘Can’t Stop This Thing We Started’ which always has that effect. However a beautifully delivered ‘Please Forgive Me’ was one of the many songs where I was struck just how good his voice remains and, rather like his image, remarkably unchanged over the years.

BRYAN ADAMS - 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

‘Go Down Rocking’ sounded like U2’s ‘Elevation’ meets ‘Glad All Over’ and saw him play some mean harmonica. However over the years the ‘bare bones’ format  has become an ever larger part of the show and this was no exception. The middle part of this set included ‘Shine A Light’ where the sea of phone lights made for quote a spectacle, ‘Here I Am’ where he was accompanied only by Gary Breit’s beautiful piano playing, somewhat surprisingly a gutsy solo ‘Whiskey In The Jar’, and ‘When You’re Gone’, which flourished in this format, standing on the strength of the song rather than a Spice Girl’s annoying contribution.

Preceded by an amusing anecdote about a mariachi band playing it in a Mexican restaurant unaware of his presence, ‘Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman’ featured Keith’s delicate Spanish guitar before one final new song in ‘Never Ever Let You Go’  with an unexpected synthwave feel.

 BRYAN ADAMS - 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

As the set gradually rocked back up, ‘The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You featured some typically brisk and energetic drumming from Pat Steward, then Bryan took some pre-show requests. You could add my name to the long laundry list of people who had asked for it as I was delighted the first choice was ‘One Night Love Affair’, which would be a stand out opening cut on most albums but is unfairly overlooked because of the strength of ‘Reckless’; though when he covered ‘London Calling’ (in very authentic fashion), I could imagine the old punks of my generation thinking they had heard everything now.

Naturally one of the biggest cheers so far came when Bryan cast off a guitar and worked the crowd during the first verse of ‘Everything I Do (I Do It For You)’ which was also enlivened by a smooth solo from Keith. The atmosphere really started to sizzle during ‘Back To You’ with a clapalong and fine piano and slide guitar solos, then the inflatable sports car dangling over the arena could only mean the equally irresistible ‘So Happy It Hurts’.

BRYAN ADAMS - 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

This warmed us up nicely for a pair of even bigger crowd pleasers in ‘Summer of 69’, surely one of the most perfect songs ever written with Bryan going out to the edge of the walkway and drawing things out teasingly before those at the front of a packed standing floor, and more participation as the ‘na-na-na’s on an extended ‘Cuts Like A Knife’ rang around the arena. There was then a surprise as after taking their bow by shaking a leg in the style of the ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ concert troupe, the band finished off with ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’. Normally I would balk at covers, of which there seem to be more in the set these days, but it fitted the atmosphere perfectly.

As the band went back stage there was then a brief ‘Where’s Wally?’ moment as Bryan disappeared down the side of the arena. It was to head for a makeshift stage at the back, at which point the first in the crowd became last and vice versa, as he performed ‘Straight From the Heart’ and ‘All For Love’, again to a forest of phone lights. They are simple and universal sentiments perhaps but the way one man with only a voice that had been singing for 2 ¼ hours, an acoustic guitar and harmonica could hold attention spoke volumes for his talent.

BRYAN ADAMS - 02 Arena, London, 15 May 2025

Ever reliable, his everyman image hides a man whose innate understanding of how live entertainment works is backed by a catalogue of great songs. This combination made this arena production feel like an intimate show.

Album review : THE FLOWERPOT MEN – Midsummer Dreaming, An Anthology 1967-70

Cherry Red [Release date : 23.05.25]

English musicians/songwriters/singers, John Carter and Ken Lewis achieved limited success in the sixties, scoring two top ten hits as the Ivy League, in 1965 and 66.

Meanwhile, aside from breeding an anti consumerist counterculture, 1967’s Summer Of Love, centred in San Francisco, created an explosion of rock and pop music worldwide.
British musicians saw it as an opportunity to get their records on Rock radio, and their faces on TV.
And so the Flowerpot Men were born.

You could argue it was climbing on a bandwagon, but it meant Carter & Co got a shot in the driver’s seat, working out their own route, choosing their own destinations.

This 3 CD anthology gathers together all the recordings made by the various iterations of Carter’s band. 64 tracks in all, including two full “previously unreleased” albums, Peace(1967) and Past Imperfect (1970).

It takes a deep dive into recordings by Friends, Dawn Chorus and The Haystack, all liberally strewn across the 3 CDs, and all aliases of the Carter/Lewis partnership.

One of those tracks is ‘Mythological Sunday’, with Tony (White Plains/Edison Lighthouse/First Class) Burrows on lead vocals as well as Carter’s original.

It was the flipside to Friends’ anaemic ‘Piccolo Man’ single release, and goes toe to toe with The Beach Boy’s ‘Heroes And Villains’, also released in 1967. It’s a pseudo psychedelic wonder, edging into Moody Blues territory.
Carter’s version, lighter, fluffier, takes more of a Brian Wilson turn.

And, as you would expect, the biggie, ‘Lets Go To San Francisco, parts 1&2’ is here – in two versions. The original mono version and a cleaned up stereo version.

The single made its mark, shooting into the UK’s Top Ten Best sellers. Call it derivative, but few bands record truly original work, and anyway, if you’re going to borrow, borrow from the best.

And talking of Brian Wilson, Carter does a cool cover of The BB’s ‘Don’t Worry Baby’. In some enlightened minds a song that should be mentioned in the same breath as ‘God Only Knows’ and ‘Good Vibrations’.

A note for completists : Later in the anthology, there’s a good handful of studio demos and finished tracks, neither of which have been previously released.

So, yes, 64 tracks, 3 discs, 4 hours. Flowerpot Men bliss.

And, just for context, in 1967 : The Beatles released Sgt Pepper; The Monkees had 4 no.1 albums in the USA, and The Graduate, Cool Hand Luke and Bonnie And Clyde were the year’s top movies. ****

Album review: DARKFISH – Beyond

DARKFISH - Beyond

Bandcamp [Release date 02.07.25]

There have been many albums inspired by the universe and space – the final frontier. Sheila Maloney’s first excursion using the alter-ego Darkfish provides further exploration.

Sheila has worked with the David Cross Band and her commission for an educational video provides the basis of the first four tracks featured on ‘Beyond’.

This album will appeal to Sheila’s fans more than the wider world; those who have enjoyed her work with Cross particularly. It offers a fairly intense but rewarding soundscape, better suited to headphone listening in a darkened room.

This work differs from, say, another reviewed space excursion (in 2018 Voyager – Warren Greveson) in that she keeps things symphonically orientated rather than delving into other genres.

Maloney has to be admired for producing a distinctly non-commercial but very well executed paean to the universe. In another age this would have been called new age. Otherwordly, just as it should be.  ***1/2
