Gig review: MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

Herr Schenker is at a point in his career where anniversaries are coming along as regularly as Glasgow buses. Having been in the business this long, the milestones keep on coming and his year it is Michael’s time in UFO that is under the spotlight being 50 years since he tread the boards with Mogg, Way and the rest of the crew.

MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

Michael has already released his ‘My Years With UFO’ retrospective album which involved a strong supporting cast of guest vocalists and is a great reminder of the pivotal part he played in UFO’s success. His current tour is an extension of this with a set chock full of UFO classics that has had great reviews and cemented the Glasgow show as a ‘must see’ in my calendar.

The gig sold out well in advance and the anticipation prior to the show kicking off was fever pitch. With this in mind, it could have proved a difficult gig for an opening act, but Wytch Hazel took it in their collective stride. Given that the band have been around for the past 14 years, up to this point I was blissfully unaware of the name. It turns out I have some catching up to do as the guys are about to release album number five and given the showing here, it’s a back catalogue I need to investigate further.

WYTCH HAZEL – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

The four piece took to the stage and launched into opener ‘The Fire’s Control’ resplendent in long white shirts, white leggings and, in the case of vocalist Colin Hendra, a flowing golden cape. The twin guitar work of Hendra and Alex Haslem was excellent throughout the set and brought to mind flashes of Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy in parts.

The set was mainly culled from the band’s four albums with highlights including ‘Still We Fight’ and ‘The Devil Is Here’, but we were also treated to three new tracks from the bands forthcoming album ‘Lamentations’ which is due for release on the 4th July.

MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

The guys brand of classic rock went down a storm with the gathering crowd and by the time they played the last chords of new song ‘Healing Power’ to round off the set they had made a lasting impression. This was an entertaining set from Wytch Hazel and I am sure a few of the crowd will be marking the 4th July in their diaries awaiting the next instalment of new music from the guys.

With the crowd nicely warmed up the arrival of Michael Schenker and co couldn’t come quick enough. As the lights dimmed and Zep’s ‘Immigrant Song’ pumped from the PA a huge cheer went up. Michael then appeared stage left with his trademark white Flying V in hand and a huge smile plastered on his face taking in the crowd. The rest of the band emerged and  cranked out the opening riff to ‘Natural Thing’.

MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

For this tour Michael has enlisted Erik Gronwall for vocal duties and it proves to be an inspired choice as he handles the UFO material with aplomb. ‘Only You Can Rock Me’ followed before ‘Hot and Ready’ summed up the Glasgow crowd nicely.

The opening bars of ‘Doctor, Doctor’ then upped the temperature further as the assembled throng bounced along as one. It still amazes me that that Schenker wrote one of the most memorable and well loved riffs in rock at the tender age of 18, not a bad way to cement your place in rock history!

The joy of this tour is that it allows Michael to dust off some less played gems from the UFO back catalogue. These were interspersed throughout the set alongside bonafide UFO classics. ‘Mother Mary’, ‘I’m A Loser’ and ‘This Kid’ fit into the former category and went down a well with a crowd who were deeply knowledgeable in the UFO back catalogue.

MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

‘Lights Out’ then took us back to more familiar ground with the crowd screaming along in the chorus with Erik who was putting in a great shift up front. Erik then strapped on an acoustic guitar and the pace slowed for a ‘Lipstick Traces’ which then led into ‘Between The Wall’ before finishing off with ‘Belladonna’. That medley proved to be the appetiser for the one of the set highlights in ‘Love To Love’, again with the Glasgow choir on backing vocals.

We were soon back in full rocking mode with the rapid, incessant riff of ‘Let It Roll’ which then steamrollered into ‘Can You Roll Her’. These two tracks also highlighted the fantastic rhythm section of Bodo Schopf on drums and Barend Courbois on bass who were rock solid all evening. Long time guitarist and keyboard player Steve Mann completed the on stage crew and again impressed throughout.

MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

A blast through of ‘Reasons Love’ led us nicely to the closing trio of UFO classics which kicked off with ‘Rock Bottom’. This gave Michael a chance to play an extended solo piece which, from my vantage point on the barrier at the front, was stunning. Being able to watch a master craftsman at work at such close quarters was a joy. It is easy to see why he has been at the top of his game for the last 50 odd years.

‘Shoot, Shoot’ again had Erik encouraging the capacity crowd to sing along, not that much encouragement was needed! ‘Too Hot To Handle’ then brought the set to a rocking end as the Glasgow crowd cheered their heartfelt appreciation of one of the best in the business.

MICHAEL SCHENKER – The Garage, Glasgow, 13 May 2025

This proved to be a fantastic night of UFO classics from a man that has given so much to rock over the past 50 years. The fact that Michael can still perform these songs live with such vigour and passion is testament to his dedication to his craft.

Too Hot To Handle, you bet!

Album review: AVAWAVES – Heartbeat

 AVAWAVES - Heartbeat

One Little Independent Records [Release date 09.05.25]

This is the third album from chill-out duo Aisling Brouwer and Anna Phoebe and should be essential listening; just great for those long evenings when you can actually sit out and enjoy the setting sun.

The modus operandi is the mournful violin of Phoebe matched to Brouwer’s beats (and keyboards). It’s simply stunning.

For ‘Heartbeat’ the songs are occasionally augmented by atmospheric background vocals (Imogen Williams who also sings lead on ‘Sleep Tight’). It’s all highly immersive from the opening title track.

I’ve always been a sucker for minor keys, a mournful and evocative violin and reflective keyboards but sometimes violin-led albums can get a bit tiresome and repetitive. I was always impressed with Ed Alleyne-Johnson’s ‘Purple Electric Violin Concerto’ but now seldom play it. Avawaves music certainly has future replay potential and the formula is contagious.

Throughout, the album evokes a widescreen soundtrack which is hardly surprising because Brouwer is a film composer. Together with Phoebe she has scored ‘The Buccaneers’ (Apple TV+).  But this isn’t library music, another genre that feeds TV and film and can sometimes sound too samey and disorientating when out of context.

In the midst of Covid-19, I wrote in 2021 about their previous album ‘Chrysalis’: “…the album succeeds by offering an immersive melancholic soundtrack to our current malaise and uncertainty.”

This description is still relevant and ‘Heartbeat’ is more soothing balm for our times.  ****1/2

Album review : YOUNG AND WILD – A Decade of American Glam Metal 1982-92

Cherry Red [Release date : 23.05.25]

The Eighties in the USA: some rock bands rode the Glam Metal wave, propelled by MTV’s insatiable appetite for the genre’s hypnotic theatrics (and, let’s face it, some really great songs). They discarded the glitter and the stack heels, but otherwise borrowed heavily from the image of 1970’s UK Glam Rock.

Others, the propagators, were at the leading edge, in the vanguard, making the moves, setting the standards.

Across its 58 tracks, 58 bands, this 3 CD anthology encompasses both, and more.

Bon Jovi, Kiss, Dokken, Cheap Trick, Poison, Cinderella, Skid Row and a few others created an enviable track record, frequently troubling the Billboard charts. The music was formulaic perhaps, hook heavy, brightly lit, but few bands could match style with substance any better than them. They are all here.

Rock Radio and MTV were alive with bands with fast developing songwriting skills, matched to producers who could craft a musical end product in the studio. Ratt, The Bullet Boys, Bang Tango, Warrant, LA Guns, Enuff Z’Nuff, Lynch Mob and Winger all climbed the greasy pole to fame and fortune and hung on tight. Multiple headlined tours played in sold out stadiums.

Then there were the bands who should have been bigger, but didn’t quite conform to the accepted narrative, like Saigon Kick, Little Caesar, Lillian Axe, Billy Squier, White Lion, Tesla.

Saigon Kick’s 1991 debut album clamped a huge defibrillator onto the moribund arena rock of the previous decade, and jump started the genre. It is whatever is the opposite of flamboyance – stark and original, often bizarrely catchy. ‘What You Say’ is taken from that debut.

When interviewed, Lillian Axe’s Steve Blaze : “I write about the basic spiritual essences of life and our existence. If something moves me, chances are it will move others, and I write about it.”

‘Picture Perfect’, from the band’s debut is here.

Grittier, edgier, bluesier, Tesla’s sound replicated the energetic vitality of the Glam Metal genre, while deviating from the blueprint. And while they avoided real success, it gained them many fans, with them to this day.

‘Little Suzi’ (written by Glasgow’s Jim Diamond), taken from 1987’s Mechanical Resonance is here.

White Lion’s ‘Wait’ is also here. Our review said “it is the Pride album’s breakout track. It comes about half way through, a fine example of expert sequencing, allowing the preceding tracks to build climactically toward this point. And by the time we reach it, we know we’re really onto something big.”

These songs and albums demonstrated that Glam Metal went way deeper than the greasepaint. ****

Album review : DON FELDER – The Vault – 50 Years Of Music

Frontiers Music [Release date : 23.05.25]

Don Felder enjoyed two six year stints as a member of The Eagles. The second ended in 2001.

His vocal presence was limited. He was a prolific songwriter, though Don Henley and Glen Frey were the dominant forces in the band (except for ‘Hotel California’, written by all three).

That said, his contribution to the band’s sound is immeasurable. They hired him on for his skills as a guitarist. His solos and slide playing helped the band’s transition away from Country to Rock, and the rest, of course, is popular music history.

The Vault resurrects material written by Felder over those years, from 1974 to the present day. New versions of songs that never made it beyond demo stage, now kitted out in studio finery.

These are songs written by a session musician in constant demand, and more recently two solo albums, Road To Forever (2012) and American Rock’n’Roll (2019).

He’s helped out The Vault by a galaxy of stars, including David Paich, Steve Lukather, Brian Tichy and Lenny Castro.

The album’s key track comes early. ‘Free At Last’, the first teaser trailer, sees Felder’s whispered, processed vocal, quickly changing up into an intimate chorus…Felder : “This song is a heartfelt tribute to the freedom that awaits us beyond this life. It’s about shedding the burdens of this world, and finding peace in the promise that, one day, we will all be Free At Last.”

‘Hollywood Victim’ too delves into dark, moody territory, portrayed in a mix of first-person narrative and vivid imagery. Framed against a backdrop of haunting, bluesy soft rock, Felder reveals the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, and the broken dreams and broken lives of those who lost their way.

We need something a little more upbeat now, and Felder delivers with ‘Last All Night’. Very eighties Van Halen, overlaid with a sheen of westcoast harmonies and an ultra cool chorus.

He reinforces our musical entry to the eighties with the poppy, upbeat ‘I Like The Things You Do’, which ironically, just maybe could have been a Glen Frey single. That’s further emphasised by ‘All Girls Love To Dance’, an echo of the movie inspired synth pop/rock of Harold Faltermeyer.

A cool new recording of ‘Heavy Metal’, the theme song to the controversial 1981 sci-fi movie animation, has preserved the music’s warm, valve driven ambience. Nice move.

Elsewhere, ‘Move On’ entertains us with Felder’s trademark axework, proudly old fashioned, lightly loaded with grain and grit, and the lazily paced ‘Digital World’, fuelled by reggae rhythms and soulful musical hints.

Eagles or no Eagles, The Vault is is an indelible record of a solo artist who has always been at the top of his game. ****

Rising Stars: SLY WITHERS

Australian Alt-Rock band Sly Withers released a new single on April 17 entitled ‘Restless’.

Sly Withers are Jono Mata (guitar and vocals), Sam Blitvich (guitar and vocals), Shea Moriarty (bass) and Fraser Cringle (drums).

SLY WITHERS

Sam & Jono answered a few Qs for us…

First of all, what inspired the band name?

SAM: Our bass player Shea and I had English Lit together in Year 12 around the time we started the band. One day we were bored in class while reading Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and decided we should open up the book to a random page, and put a finger on a random word to see if it’d make a good band name. The first one we landed on was “sly”, the second was “withers” and the rest is history.

You guys have a knack for blending heart-on-sleeve lyrics with punchy riffs. How do you keep that balance between raw emotion and pure energy?

SAM: I actually think the raw emotion can help inform the energy in the music while we’re writing it. If something sounds like a gutpunch lyrically, the music underneath often finds a way to organically match that energy without giving it much thought. Kinda like you’re “living in the world” of the lyric while coming up with your parts, and that informs the type of stuff you play. Generally speaking, the stuff that just happens in the moment is often the best.

The Aussie music scene is buzzing right now—how has it shaped your sound?

SAM: The Aussie scene is so rich with cool people doing cool stuff. We are nothing without our community, whether it be bands we share stages with, staff in venues around the country, or most importantly the audiences. So in that sense I feel as though the scene has very much shaped who we are today.

Musically speaking, we’ve always found that leaning into the stuff that sets us apart from other bands in Aus is important. When we started out, leaning into our more pop punk adjacent influences felt a bit scary because it felt like all that was happening in Perth was psych-rock (peak Tame Impala era), but the more we focussed in on what we liked and not what we thought the scene around us would approve of, the more excited we got about what we were making, so we leant in and tried carving our own path musically.

Your latest record ‘Restless’  hits hard. What’s the wildest story from the writing or recording process?

JONO: Just in general it was a pretty wild experience recording overseas for the first time.  In the past we’ve managed to fit in recording albums around everyone’s life and work commitments, so being in that setting in a different country where recording the song was the only focus at the time was an awesome feeling.  At the start we weren’t sure if we would have time to track drums in those sessions until Stevie our producer managed to squeeze us in at Rob Cavallo’s home studio to finish it all up.  Getting to walk in there and see all the albums we’ve loved over the years from bands like Paramore/Green day/My Chemical Romance, as framed plaques, plastering the walls was insane.

‘RESTLESS’ ON SPOTIFY

Touring life: chaos or controlled madness? What’s been the biggest “pinch me” moment on the road? What is the UK like compared to Australia or anywhere else?

SAM: A bit of both haha. It’s always a bit chaotic with plenty of challenges being constantly thrown at you, but we adapt and overcome and try have a laugh throughout it all.

Getting to bring our music to the UK is a big enough pinch me moment for us. We’ve dreamt of playing over here since we were teenagers, so getting to finally do it and having people from the other side of the planet singing along to our songs is absolutely wild. The UK is cool as!  The people are lovely, Greggs is sick, your Burger King does a wildly good vegan chicken burger and the drives through the countryside between towns are bloody gorgeous. Already itching to come back asap.

Every band has influences, but who’s one artist that totally changed the game for Sly Withers?

JONO:  I think I always go back to Biffy Clyro as being my biggest influence, in particular how they blend being a great live “guitar music” band with a really great taste for production elements and how that all comes together in a record.  I’m a big fan of the variety in their music as well, theres a lot of albums that have gone in many different directions sonically and I think that’s really cool and interesting.

In an industry drowning in content, how do you keep your music and message cutting through the noise?

SAM: Good question! I don’t know if I have the answer to be honest. We just try to do our thing and hope for the best haha

At the core of it all, good songs are key for us. We always try to prioritise writing the best music we can, and from there we just hope for the best!

Authenticity feels like an important thing for us too. I like the idea of us being relatable to people, rather than being up on a pedestal. We’re just people, same as every person who listens to the tunes or comes to a gig, and we like creating an environment where everyone in the room is on the same level. None of this holier than thou, rockstar shit haha

Looking ahead, do you see the band evolving in a way that might surprise your fans? Any curveballs?

JONO:  I think its a little early on in the recording process to anser that properly but at this stage we’re very much open to anything and seeing where the songs lead naturally.  I’d say we do want this album to be a step forward for us and do something different for the band, so I think we will be on the lookout for those curveballs.

If you could rewind time and give your younger selves one piece of advice about the music biz, what would it be?

SAM: Stress less and enjoy the ride while it’s happening! It can be really easy to get caught up in the stress of the whole operation, especially for me as a chronic over thinker. Also take a probiotic to fend off the ever looming threat of getting sick on the road haha

Your songs feel like they hit people right in the chest. What do you think makes your songwriting so relatable?

SAM: Honesty feels important. We’re pretty raw with our lyrics and I think that kind of vulnrebility and specificity is real important to what Sly is. We’re just a bunch of dudes singing about our own lives. Songwriting is inadvertent journalling for us, and that kind of “open book” vibe seems to be something that people respond really well too. I know i love it in the artists I adore too. Something that really hit home for me was listening to Jake from Modern Baseball giving an interview once where he said something along the lines of, the more specific you are in your lyrics to the point of it being so speficic that it’s almost unrelatable to people, the more relatable it actually becomes because everyone has their own infinitely complicated and specific existence, and hearing others talk about theirs reminds you of your own.

Dream collaboration—any artist, any era. Who’s on your bucket list, and what kind of track would you want to make together?

JONO:  There are way too many people coming to mind so I’m going to have to keep it current haha.  I had a pipe dream idea the other day that it would be so fun and interesting to record something with Holly Humberstone, blending our music styles with maybe some like Sleep Token type influences thrown in there for good measure, I think that would rule.

Gig review: BRAVE RIVAL – Hampton Hub, London, 1 May 2025

BRAVE RIVAL- Hampton Hub, London, 1 May 2025

Over the past two years Brave Rival have been one of my very favourite new bands, and judging by the various awards they have received (including ‘Fight Or Flight’ being GRTR!’s joint classic rock album of the year for 2024!) I am not alone in that. However, late last year one of the two co-vocalists that helped them forge such a unique sound, Chloe Josephine, left for family reasons. It was the biggest challenge in the band’s short career and eventually they chose to continue without her as a four piece, and I was somewhat anxious whether they would be able to maintain that special vibe.

Their touring schedule has not let up, and my first opportunity to see the new line-up came not too far from me at the Hampton Hub, a community centre in outer South-West London where promoter Jeff Barnes is putting on an impressive array of bands. These include originals (Chantel McGregor and Martin Turner being two upcoming shows) even though the conventional wisdom is that venues like this need tribute acts to make them pay. There was a decent crowd considering, all table seated with some familiar Brave Rival fan (mostly) boys filling the front row.

BRAVE RIVAL- Hampton Hub, London, 1 May 2025

Perhaps unfairly, as the gig opened I was in the mindset of critiquing the new approach. This lasted less than halfway through ‘Heart Attack’ where the power in Lindsey Bonnick’s voice easily carried the song, even sounding like the great Ann Wilson at one point, and I never considered the issue again.

An opening quartet rocked hard and never let up, continuing with ‘Bad Choices’ made for audience involvement with clapping out the rhythm and shouting the ‘who-oh’s, ‘Secrets’ on which Lindsey’s vocals were superb, and ‘What’s Your Name Again’ with Ed ‘the Shred’ Clarke’s slide guitar and Billy Dedman’s bass prominent.

BRAVE RIVAL- Hampton Hub, London, 1 May 2025

Part of their original appeal was the between song chemistry between the two singers and Ed to a degree stepped up to the plate as Lindsey’s banter partner, particularly drawing attention to his being more youthful than the rest of the band.

The first of a few curveballs in the set was a cover of Sheryl Crow’s ‘Run Baby Run’ and a very authentic one, but enlivened by a sweet solo from Ed, who again impressed with rather greater flash on ‘On The Next Round’, another with those ‘who-oahs’ reflecting the love of some band members for Bon Jovi- like stadium rock.

BRAVE RIVAL- Hampton Hub, London, 1 May 2025

‘Sink Or Swim’ was cut from a different cloth, not only with Billy Dedman’s lengthy bass intro but Lindsey singing in a different and more ethereal style – indeed I was briefly making comparisons with Kate Bush. ‘Stars Upon My Scars’ initially took the pace down which then rebuilt as the song progressed with some urgent drumming from Donna Peters  and another epic solo from Ed.

Taking a break, we were promised surprises in the second half and the band returned in acoustic fashion for a vocally and instrumentally faultless version of ‘Alone’, made most famous of course by Heart. During ‘All I Can Think About’, they moved from acoustic to electric, before ‘Seventeen’ boasted a riff somewhat inspired by Billy’s beloved Led Zeppelin. Another surprise was a Catfish song ‘Up In Smoke’ which was part of a forthcoming album tribute to the late Matt Long.

BRAVE RIVAL- Hampton Hub, London, 1 May 2025

‘Stand Up’ was raunchy as was one of my favourites ‘Run And Hide’ despite the fact it was one of those where the original dual vocal attack was the most prominent.  After ‘Blame The Voices’, Lindsey introduced their final song ‘Heavy’ as their power ballad. For me it was more intimate than that and the vocals superb but it took an unexpected twist, segueing into a lengthy instrumental coda, starring Ed going into an epic, almost Gary Moore-like solo.

They did come back for an encore in ‘Fairytale’, again driven powerfully by Donna, cementing the conclusion I had progressively come to during the set that they seem to have become a harder and leaner beast after a few years playing together. It was notable that Lindsey introduced them to newcomers as a ‘classic rock band’ and though they continue to pick up blues awards that pigeonhole is probably even less relevant than it ever has been.

BRAVE RIVAL- Hampton Hub, London, 1 May 2025

This new line-up may be a more conventional one but their warmth, individuality and most importantly the songs are still there, so, this excellent show was an example of how another hurdle has been cleared in what, if there is any justice, will be a deserved rise to wider prominence.

Album review : STATUS QUO – Live! (Super Deluxe 8 CD Edition)

earMusic [Release date : 16.05.24]

You’ve really got to hand it to whoever guides Status Quo through the pop and rock music jungle, carefully mining their back catalogue.

Brilliantly marketed, with ads that hit all the right notes in the right places, Quo’s latest release, the 8 CD Live! looks like being another winner.

The genesis of Live! dates back to 1977 when the band played three consecutive nights at the Glasgow Apollo. A one word album title already used by over a dozen bands. It was as if Quo was reclaiming lost ground, taking back the ownership of something that rightfully belonged to them.

In a massive expansion, it now becomes Live! The Super Deluxe Edition, with 8 CDs, chronicling the band’s onstage performances on the 27th, 28th and 29th October, 1977.

Originally recorded using the iconic Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, the audio for every track has been newly remixed and remastered from the source by the “go to” guys at AVP Productions.

The band’s rough hewn live sound, a merge of blues, boogie and hard rock has distinct characteristics that defined the band’s own uniquely identifiable ouevre. It comes across with depth and clarity as we listen in.

There are too many highlights to mention here.

But, almost at random: The eight minute ‘Backwater / Just Take Me’ medley lights the fuse, setting a gig in motion that is memorable for all the right reasons.

The ten minute album version of ‘Forty Five Hundred Times’ grows to nearly 17 raucous minutes live. And the audience are with them all the way. Testament to the power of high calibre song songwriting, taut and tense in one moment, loose and uninhibited in the next.

And anyone who is in good listening terms with Quo performing live will know that the songs come hot and strong. You can almost feel the sweat dripping off the walls during the 30 minute 1,2,3 punch of ‘Roadhouse Blues’, ‘Caroline’ and ‘Bye Bye Johnny’.

Their very own pop gem stands tall between the legendary rock songs of the Doors and Chuck Berry.

Say no more. *****

Album review : GIANT – Stand And Deliver

Frontiers Music [Release date: 16.05.24]

This is the Kent Hilli, Jimmy (One Desire) Westerlund version of Giant, along with original members, David Huff and Mike Brignardello.

The signature sound of any band is provided by its vocalist, closely followed by the guy who writes the songs. Founding member, Dann Huff, was both, but he’s been wholly consumed by Nashville, where he’s been writing and producing stuff for Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and countless other marquee names.

He’s a hard act to follow, yet, putting that aside, there’s no doubt that a good chunk of this album is solid Melodic Rock.

But it’s a lot less varied than you might expect. There’s a book somewhere, with the Melodic Rock formula printed indelibly in the first few dog eared pages. Some bands, like today’s Giant, follow it closely.

Nothing wrong with that. Pacey and urgent, the stadium stomping ‘Night To Remember’ and the declamatory ‘Hold The Night’ make their mark accordingly. Both honest attempts at turning echoes of the past into something more tangible.

They come hard on the heels of ‘It’s Not Right’, a punchy album opener that sets the pulse racing. An echo of Hilli’s solo stuff, with added Giant flavouring.

Then ‘I Will Believe’ picks up on the Coverdale AOR formula. Commercialised, accessible, user friendly, with a bluesy undercurrent, encouraging us to sing along loudly in the car, shower, wherever.

And again, ‘It Ain’t Over Till Its Over’ just screams “Coverdale!”, Built around naggingly familiar Bruce Hornsby-esque piano theme, it develops into an classy AOR ballad, largely thanks to Westerlund’s axework mixing the delicate with the fiery.

The title track ‘Stand And Deliver’ is very Giant mk1. Westerlund’s colourful arrangement and production help free it from the past, but like several tracks here, it finds it difficult to break new ground.

Three of the album’s songs are resurrected co-writes between Dann Huff and the late Mark Spiro. Continuity of a kind, connecting the past and the present.

But they are disappointingly bland.  ***

Feature: THE DARKER MY HORIZON’s Bakers Dozen

The Darker My Horizon recently release their fifth album, ‘From Out Of The Ashes’ on March 23 – ten years to the day of  the release of their debut album ‘Acquiesce’.

tdmh

Baker’s Dozen, in which various musicians choose 13 songs – a baker’s dozen – to make a playlist. The following rules apply –

    • Maximum of three songs from any artist
    • Maximum of two songs from any album
    • Maximum of two of your own songs (musicians only)
    • Track 13 is a song you’ve enjoyed that has been released in the past 13 years i.e. since 2012 or one all band members love.

The band’s current line-up consists of founder, vocalist and guitarist Paul Stead, drummer Russ Barnett, guitarist Jamie Bannon & bassist Mike Wigglesworth.

Paul Stead:

Superstitious – Europe

Porn Star Dancing – My Darkest Days

Mr Rainmaker – Warrant

Singer songwriters like Joey Tempest & Jani Lane influenced me massively. They create so much melody and their voices on these two tracks are superb. Add Kee Marcello to the mix and Superstitious is just flawless. Same with the guitar on PSD – Zakk Wylde is awesome. And Mr Rainmaker is the consummate hard rock song.

Jamie Bannon:

Hallowed Be Thy Name – Iron Maiden Was the first song I ever heard of Maidens and instantly fell in love with them. The mix of the slow and then fast tempo was amazing.

Youth Gone Wild – Skid Row Sebastian Bach; back in the day could hit almost any note in chest voice with grit so when I first heard him do that it sent shivers down my spine.

No More Tears – Ozzy Osbourne Was my first introduction to Zakk Wylde and his solo was perfection. It suited the song. The duo of Zakk and Ozzy for me just made me fall in love with those songs. So much so I named my son after him. Ozzy’s vocal melodies mixed with Zakk’s shredding and Melodic solos. Just doesn’t get any better than that for me.

tdhmgigs

Mike Wigglesworth:

Just A Day – Feeder This band were the soundtrack to my start in London – saw them at Reading Festival and they were so humble. Grant’s lyrics are a perfect blend of peculiar yet brilliant.

Just Because – Jane’s Addiction This song kicks butt… simples – the drums, bass and guitar are all perfect – the lyrics mean nothing to me, but I love the melody.

Fall At Your Feet – Crowded House Those harmonies… used to sing all their stuff with my brother – and so I had to stand up at the Crematorium and play it at his funeral.

Russ Barnett:

Lowlife – Theory of a Deadman A song about reckless living, partying, potentially substance abuse, and overall irresponsible behaviour. Then realising you messed up. Most of my younger adult years.

Decadence Dance – Extreme Just as I left school I heard this song. A song about a loss of innocence. A young boy leaving home and going into the decadent world and being tempted by all the things that go on in life. Boy was I tempted.

Rise Today – Alter Bridge We can all do something better for any given situation, as the world seems to be a tough place. A message for us all.

And for lucky 13 – our Baker’s Dozen – “Still Of The Night” from Whitesnake.

John Sykes truly was a talent to behold. As we recently lost both him & Bernie Marsden a “snake” tune often pops up in our live set.

Album review : ART NATION – Re-Revolution

Frontiers [Release date : 16.05.25]

Sweden’s Art Nation are getting considerable push from the Frontiers Music label.

This month we get a replay of their first rodeo, Revolution (2015), coming hard on the heels of last month’s impressive new album, The Ascendance. And we get a handful of bonus tracks, added to sweeten the deal.

The band get mentioned in the same sentence as HEAT, WET and Treat, but they fight their own fight, thanks to Carl Tuden’s steady percussive thump, Alexander Strandell’s anchoring vocals and axeman Christoffer Borg, who adds some serious sonic sparkle to every track.

Jacob Hansen’s razor sharp production and imaginative arrangements are gloriously reminiscent of Melodic Rock’s most hypnotic moments.

And yet, the album something of a mixed bag, with big anthemic choruses spun out of simple steps, working very effectively on ‘Don’t Wait For Salvation’ (good advice) and ‘Start A Fire’.

Then, elsewhere, ‘All The Way’ and ‘Number One’ strain to be killer cuts but just don’t possess enough melodic rock juice to make it.

And the album had started out so well. Strandell’s voice swoops and soars as Borg’s axe zooms in and out of orbit on ‘I Need You To Understand’, and equally on the helter skelter rush of ‘I Want Out’, Borg again cranking the axe up to incendiary levels.

‘3000 Beats’ and ‘Movin On’ might remind you of TNT’s finest moments. Borg echoes Ronnie Le Tekro’s intuitive axework, sometimes big and bold, at others scaled down and intimate, standing back when the chorus comes powering through.

Strandell’s piano accompaniment on the immaculately judged two hander ballad, ‘Look To The Sky’, takes an increasingly leading role as the song progresses, bravely resisting any temptation to go full kitchen sink.

It’s a classy highpoint on an occasionally uneven album. ***1/2

Rising Stars: BLACKLIST UNION

Blacklist Union press photo

Blacklist Union return with new single ‘Mississippi Moonhound’ — a swampy, swaggering anthem delivering a powerful blast of wild and untamed rock ‘n’ roll. The new single captures the feeling of being haunted by your past while howling into the night for something more. Blacklist Union’s new album ‘Slay the Dragon’ is scheduled for September 2025 and will be their sixth full-length release.

Blacklist Union have built a reputation on their explosive live shows and unapologetically bold sound. Their previous record, ‘Letters from the Psych Ward’, racked up over two million streams, setting the stage for the band’s new album.

GRTR caught up with frontman Tony West for a chat…

“Mississippi Moonhound” has been described as a swampy, swaggering anthem—what was the emotional or spiritual state you were in when writing this track?

The last two records I’ve written after leaving the Amazon jungle in Peru having spent time there with the Indians. So I was in a hyper spiritual state for the last two records, especially.

You’ve worked closely with Christopher Johnson for years—what makes him such a perfect creative partner for Blacklist Union?

Chris Johnson is the sixth member of Blacklist Union and always has been. He’s like a brother to me and he allows me to be me and do my thing.

How would you say upcoming album Slay the Dragon differs from Letters from the Psych Ward in terms of sound, inspiration and vibes?

We have our same niche sound. I think we’ve created our own sound. And the music just keeps evolving. I think this one is more tribal and deeper.

Your music has never chased trends, but rather carved its own lane—how do you define success in today’s rock scene?

Successes at the end of the day is to say yourself I didn’t sell out to trends or suits or what’s hip or cool at the moment

There’s a lot of raw energy in your work—what role does live performance play in maintaining that intensity?

Well, the live performance is where it’s at. We bring the fire live.

Gig review: HAREM SCAREM – Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

HAREM SCAREM - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

In the melodic rock world few bands enjoy as high a reputation as Canadians Harem Scarem for a consistent career of high quality releases- 16 albums at the last count. Hardly surprising then that they have been a big draw at their festival appearances at the Gods, Firefest and Rockingham over the years, but remarkably in their 30 plus year career, this show was their first in the UK in their own right.

It was a solitary stop in London as part of a European tour structured around the Frontiers Rock festival in Milan. The result was queues forming around the block and an air of anticipation from a packed attendance of familiar fellow members of the small but thriving melodic rock community, many making an overnight trip from elsewhere in the UK.

HAREM SCAREM - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

The Frontiers label connection also meant a value for money three band bill with two support acts squeezing in half hour support slots. Indeed this was a UK debut for five piece Seventh Crystal, one of the new breed of Swedish melodic rock acts. Viking-looking frontman Krystian Fyhr in his turned round baseball cap has an impressive vocal range and their sound has evolved to be very much at the heavier end of melodic rock, with songs like ‘Mayflower’ verging on prog metal at times.

Opening with ‘Blinded By the Light’, they previewed material from a shortly to be released third album ‘Entity’ and songs like the more accessible ‘Million Times’ and set closer ‘See You On the Other Side’ made a mark on me. Although not quite to my softer tastes it was an impressive set, my only gripe being that their strongest song ‘Wonderland’ was absent.

CASSIDY PARIS - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

In contrast young Australian singer Cassidy Paris seems to have been a near permanent fixture in the UK for the last year or two. Well backed by the Rogowski brothers Alex and Tom (who sadly have since abruptly quit the band) and Dad Steve Janevski on bass, she is a force of nature. I noticed, as I did the previous time I saw her, quite how assured her stage presence is, as she worked every inch of the stage cajoling participation.

None of this would mean anything without good songs to back it up, and a number of us fans were punching the air to the likes of ‘Here I Am’ and ‘Danger’ with their catchy choruses. A cover of ‘I Hate Myself For Loving You’ would have been more familiar to the majority and was a good showcase for her feisty attitude.

CASSIDY PARIS - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

She played a couple of new songs ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ which had a tougher and darker feel and ‘Butterfly’, and an excellent set ended with another of those instantly catchy anthems in ‘Walking Through Fire’. She ranks alongside Chez Kane as the most exciting and enjoyable woman melodic rocker right now.

To a packed and increasingly sweaty house Harem Scarem opened bang up to date with ‘Better The Devil You Know’ from brand new album ‘Chasing Euphoria’, then Pete Lesperance’s introductory guitar run to the classic opening cut from their debut, ‘Hard To Love’ sparked roars of delight from me and many others.

HAREM SCAREM - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

The quintessential Harem Scarem sound was very much in evidence. His silver hair grown out and tied back, Pete’s solos were a masterclass of fluent arpeggios but always brief and serving the song. Harry Hess is the frontman and recognisable voice, but he is reinforced by a wall of one, two or at times three backing vocals to create a big wall of sound.

All of them are decent singers in their own right – indeed now bespectacled drummer Darren Smith was good enough to have been the lead vocalist for the likes of Red Dragon Cartel and took the lead on another new song in ‘Gotta Keep Your Head Up’, sounding to me like Paul Stanley in his more melodic moments.

The set heavily leant on the first two albums which most would think of as their classics before a detour into some more experimental and alternative sounds, so the likes of ‘Stranger Than Love’ with those big vocals and the AOR-ish ‘Distant Memory’ were rapturously received.

HAREM SCAREM - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

Pete was then given a turn at the mike and interestingly his solo song  ‘Boy Without A Clue’ sounded not unlike a Harem Scarem song though with a different guitar style. Cassidy Paris was brought on to duet on ‘Death Of Me’, a good example of how they mix muscle into their melody, then after the instant ‘Here Today Gone Tomorrow’, Pete’s solo slot ‘Mandy’ gave the band a much needed breather, as the venue was ridiculously hot, affecting those on stage just as much as those in the crowdCombined with some very poor lighting, frankly it was an environment unworthy of the quality on view.

There was the odd trip into the comeback albums since they returned from a brief hiatus a decade ago, including ‘Sinking Ship’, whose singalong surprisingly got one of the best receptions of the night, and ‘Garden Of Eden’, either side of the ballad ‘Honestly’ which showed off that Harry has one of the best natural melodic rock voices.

HAREM SCAREM - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

After a couple of favourites from their classic second album ‘Mood Swings’ in ‘Sentimental Blvd’ with Darren singing the verses in exuberant fashion and ‘If There Was A Time’ with all band members contributing to the vocals, bassist Mike Vassos got his turn on lead vocals to complete a full house, keeping the Canadian theme going with a cover of ‘Summer of 69’. Extremely well sing and executed, nevertheless it seemed a bit of a waste when a committed audience would have preferred to hear their own songs.

Talking of which, fists were punching to ‘Slowly Slipping Away’ and yet the title track of the new album was equally well received. After Harry joked about the old tropes of pretending to go off for an encore, they ended an hour and half utterly devoid of padding in the usual fashion with the powerful musical and lyrical sentiments of ‘No Justice’.

HAREM SCAREM - Camden Underworld, London, 28 April 2025

Venue aside, it was a near faultless gig. Sure, it would have been nice to hear ‘Saviours Never Cry’ or some stuff from ‘Way Of The World’ which marked their return to the melodic rock arena, but the setlist was probably very close to that which most fans would have chosen. At a time when we need to support our Canadian commonwealth brethren, my farewell message to Harem Scarem would be, don’t leave it too long to come back.

EP review: BRAKE LOOSE – Frenetic

Brake Loose – Frenetic

Symphonic Distribution [Release date 30.05.25]

“Frenetic” is the debut EP from Irish band Brake Loose. Opening track “Dancing on the Red Line” will leave you in no doubt that the band are heavily influenced by the ‘80’s (and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that), reminiscent of Billy Idol, the lyrics even namecheck the era. “Treat Her Like a Rose” contains some excellent guitar work and has touches of Simple Minds and The Cult.

“Frenetic” is the perfect title for this 5 track EP as there is a certain energy running throughout, there are also hooks a plenty and a dark undercurrent at its core. “Love on Fire” and “Kiss Me Bye Bye” are good examples of this, the former reminding me of something that I just cannot put my finger on.

The final track is the band’s breakout single “REBEL REBEL (Evil Like the Devil)”, which has gained more than 200K streams and led to successful tours of the UK and Ireland, including a slot at the Maid of Stone festival.

If you like anthemic rock that is full of melodies give this EP a listen. ***1/2

Gig review: LEAFHOUND – Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 24 April 2025

LEAFHOUND - Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 24 April 2025

The chequered history of Leafhound is now into its long awaited third act. The original band’s sole 1971 album ‘Growers of Mushroom’ became a cult classic with original LP’s going for many thousands of pounds. Then in the mid-2000s lead singer Peter French put together a new line-up, who within a couple of years made an excellent sophomore album in ‘Unleashed’. But despite continuing to play shows every so often, a follow up third album never arrived…..until this year when ‘Once Bitten’ was finally issued.

I was at the official album launch show at the Camden Underworld a couple of months back, but this show at the Eel Pie Club, where Pete is a regular with them and other bands was a homecoming of sorts. It made for a more special atmosphere, intimate and relaxed and the band’s energy feeding off being surrounded by familiar faces.

LEAFHOUND- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 24 April 2025

Five songs from the new album were dropped into the set, including opener ‘Yippee Kay Ay’, inspired by Bruce Willis, which was as loud and raucous as I’ve known Leafhound before the first trip to the debut in ‘Drowned My Life In Fear’.

Another new song was actually one which Pete wrote some time ago with Carmine Appice of Vanilla Fudge and Duane Hitchings. ‘Cinderella’ marked a departure of style, at times either  funky or psychedelic (notably in Luke Rayner’s use of the effects pedals) while another trend I noticed on this and some other songs compared to before was greater use of backing vocals, especially from Pete’s son Dominic on the drums.

LEAFHOUND - Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 24 April 2025

There was a pair from ‘Unleashed’ in ‘Stop Look and Listen’ (which always reminds me of   Cream’s ‘Tales of Brave Ulysses’ mixed with Blackfoot’s ‘Train Train’) with a particularly fine solo from Luke and ‘Overtime’. Pete’s classic blues rock voice has weathered very well over the years and the evergreen feel was accentuated by the fact he still carries off the rock star look, leather trousers and all.

After another trip back into the vintage sounds of ‘With A Minute To Go’, ‘Barricades’ exemplified the  band interplay that Leafhound have always been so good at since I first saw the reformed version, together with another wah wah solo from Luke, then the first set closed with another new song in the hard rocking ‘Burn The House Down’, where for once Pete’s voice was slightly drowned out by the musical backing.

LEAFHOUND- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 24 April 2025

The set length was more generous than the album launch. Luke again shone as the second set opened with ‘The Man With The Moon In Him’, the tell-tale sign he is in the zone being when he raises his head to the sky as it drawing from divine intervention, and a new song in ‘Chain Gang’. Like a number of the new songs, it was less bluesy and more out and out hard rock- indeed they would have fitted comfortably in the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.

‘Sad Road To The Sea’ showed off that brilliant musical interplay notably between bassist Peter Herbert (whose bouncing up and down threatened the low ceiling) and Dominic, before what will probably always be my favourite Leafhound song in ‘Too Many Rock And Roll Times’, once again coming over as a mix of Cream and Blackfoot.

LEAFHOUND- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 24 April 2025

In a different mode, a final new song in ‘Thought Police’ was less about the music than the lyrics, railing against modern social trends.  Their best known song ‘Freelance Fiend’, which the current line up have re-recorded for the new album, boasted its usual colossal riff, then after ‘105 Degrees’, the set closed with the title track of the legendary debut, though Pete had to recount that it was about a story of a man who poisoned his wife rather than the widely assumed stoner theme. It featured a virtuoso display from Dominic, attacking the cymbals and tom-toms as if his life depended on it.

When called back for an encore, they joked they hadn’t any more rehearsed material, but still played one time set opener ‘Stagnant Pool’, with another of those vintage riffs. With this seamless mix of songs across all three albums, Pete French’s evergreen vocals and brilliant musicianship this was as good a Leafhound show as I’ve seen over the years and, excuse the pun, proof that there is life in the old dog yet.

Album review: CARL BALDASSARRE – Retroduction

CARL BALDASSARRE - Retroduction

www.carlbaldassrremusic.com [Release date: 16.05.25]

‘Retroduction’ is the first of a planned series of four album releases – each offering a different slant and flavour from guitarist, composer and producer Carl Baldassarre. Baldassarre released the well-received ‘Grand Boulevard’ project in 2023, which was released on all the normal formats plus on his innovative ‘cassongle’ format.

Retroduction was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, and additionally Sweetwater Studios in the USA. Carl Baldassarre is joined on this record by drummer Nick D’Virgilio; vocalists Mike Lusk, Kat Bowser, Laura Cooksey; on keyboards Phil Naish; brass & wind John Hinchey, Vinnie Cieslieski, Skip Cleavinger, and conductor Rick Wentworth.

As Carl Baldassarre explains, “…my setting out to create this record as an homage to the 60s and 70s American and British rock/pop music that I love to this day. Retroduction is an “introduction” to my “retro” take on that era and I hope you sit back (perhaps in a bean bag chair next to a lava lamp?) and enjoy the trip as much as I enjoyed revisiting that era and creating this music.”

Production wise the sound is spot on, with strings add a touch of class to ‘Miracles’, whilst the gospel infused ‘The Lord Rescued Me’ benefits from the gospel chorus taking the lead on the choruses.

Classic bit of 70’s inspired song storytelling on ‘The Ballad of Dorian Gray’, the sort of lyrics Chris de Burgh was king of in his 70’s heyday. Not sure who sings on ‘Joe’s Song’, but they are a dead ringer for Neil Diamond, as is the musical arrangement.

Heck, there is even a seasonal song, ‘It’s Christmas Each Day’, in amongst the album’s fifteen songs.

Other stand outs include the prog like ‘Lily’, the upbeat ‘Right Back Where I Started’ (which features a lovely Hammond riff) and the wonderful guitar solo that ushers in ‘While We’re Still Friends’, making for a rocking end to the album. In fact the guitar playing throughout this song is a thing of aural beauty!

Mission accomplished as this album is a real treat for lovers of laid-back pop rock, West Coast AOR and easy listening, although thankfully it is more Al Stewart or 70’s Chris de Burgh, than Val Doonican! ****

Album review: H.E.A.T. – Welcome To The Future

H.E.A.T- Welcome To The Future

EarMusic [Release Date 25.04.25]

H.E.A.T’s new album shows the benefits of a stable line up. 2022’s ‘Force Majeure’,  which marked the return of original singer Kenny Leckremo  surprised many with its heaviness given that the first two albums with him were more in an AOR mould, and ‘Welcome To The Future’ builds naturally on that sound.

‘Disaster’ is an opening statement of intent, a strong anthem which tips a nod to a Euro metal sound with crunchy guitar and frantic drumming from Don Crash. ‘Bad Time For Love’ is more commercial though with Kenny’s vocals soaring in almost symphonic fashion- there is a lot going on in just three minutes flat, which opens and closes with the chorus line sung  in big gang-vocal style.

‘Running To You’ may begin with a metallic riff but is even catchier with its bouncy chorus and those self-same gang vocals deliver the ‘who-oahs’.  Yet the next two songs see them broadening their sound- ‘Call My Name’ has more space in its grooves and it is even possible to discern the disco influences of fellow Swedish melodic rockers The Night Flight Orchestra  while ‘In Disguise’ shows a greater degree of musical maturity with some neo-classical instrumental passages taking the band into Rainbow or Malmsteen territory.

‘The End’ is my favourite on the album to date, with the stabbing keys I have a weakness for a major factor allied to some great guitar runs from Dave Dalone at the end of another big) chorus.

‘Rock Bottom’ is in the mould of ‘Disaster’ with a big swaggering riff yet oddly familiar in places, both in the chorus and when Kenny sings ‘I’ve never been superstitious’ in the opening verse and sounds even more like Joey Tempest (a recurring comparison). Allied to those backing vocals, I don’t think H.E.A.T have ever sounded quite as strong vocally as they do on this album.

‘Children of the Storm’ is a good complement to some of the more instant numbers, perhaps not the strongest song but another with an anthemic feel and almost symphonic metal backing, while  ‘Paradise Lost’ also takes the sound in a metallic direction with some great neo-classical guitar solos yet at the same time some brilliantly melodic keyboard work from Jona Tee.  In between, ’Losing Game’ is another it is possible to imagine as a lost song from Europe’s vintage period, with a good chorus and also boasting a synth solo in the middle.

No album is perfect and the rather average ‘Tear It Down’ for me is substantially the weakest on view, but things end more satisfactorily with in ‘We Will Not Forget’, another of those marching-style anthems that their contemporaries Eclipse do so well.

They have toughened their sound over the years but this version of H.E.A.T is lean and mean, yet also still very melodic, not least as they have mastered the art of intros that invariably grab your attention. It is at least on a par with ‘Force Majeure’ with the songs having a tad more depth  and for my money one of their very best releases in an already strong catalogue.    **** ½

Album review: CHANTEL McGREGOR – The Healing

On Sunday 11 May on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio Pete Feenstra chatted to Chantel about the new album and featuring a selection of tracks.

Chantel McGregor – The Healing

Website [Release 23.05.25]

This is Chantel McGregor’s third studio album, following on from her 2011 debut, ‘Like No Other’ and 2015’s, ‘Lose Control’. Ten years have passed since that second release but, ‘The Healing’ shows, in all it’s magnificent glory that the decade of delay and frustration has been used well. Although never lacking in self belief the time has undoubtedly allowed her to grow, as a writer and arranger and the result is a simply stunning album.

For those that think they know what to expect here, I cannot emphasis enough that this is NOT a blues album, it’s a full-blooded rock album that hits hard at every opportunity and veers unashamedly into Prog Rock territory on several tracks.

McGregor may have garnered a reputation as a blues guitarist in those early days but with ‘The Healing’ it’s safe to say those days are but distant memories and that should really be no surprise to her fans. One of the hardest working musicians on the live circuit, McGregor has used that time on the road to put together a stable, like-minded band (Colin Sutton on bass and Thom Gardner on drums) and to cement that move to the heavier sound she craves.

McGregor has always been fiercely proud of her independence as an artist, taking on as much as she can on her own, so bringing in old friend Oli Brown and his The Dead Collective drummer, Wayne Proctor, to handle production and recording duties represents quite a change in approach.

Brown is also responsible for the synths and programming while in an even more significant departure from the norm the two men have joined McGregor to share the writing credits on all eight songs on the album. Chantel has clearly revelled in the challenge thrown down, creatively, by having the two on board and, the quality of songwriting is truly outstanding.

Lyrically, McGregor is baring her soul here, addressing the issues of loss, grief, self doubt, and heartbreak and, in that respect, this may well be a cathartic and indeed healing release. And the music?

Well, there’s an overwhelming feeling here that we are now seeing and hearing the ‘real’ Chantel McGregor. Whether it be the prog influenced riffing of opening track, ‘I Will Breathe’, the powerful classic rock of ‘Broken Heartless Liar’ or the shimmering, moody guitar of the opening bars of ‘Tears’ this is a million miles away from what has gone before. Soaring guitar solos, that incredible voice… yeah, have I mentioned that this is a rock album?

There is room on this perfectly balanced record for the easy, commercial sound of ‘Stand On My Own’, before a guitar motif, reminiscent of Marillion’s Steve Rothery, introduces ‘Echoes’. The lush soundscapes, interwoven with McGregor’s soulful vocal are quite mesmerising as they lead on to a climactic, emotion laden solo.

‘Undercover’, another cleverly constructed, if more straightforward rocker leads into a real gem, ‘Truth Will Out’. This is a real departure, sonically, and the standout track on the album for me. A pulsating, electronic rhythm underlies layers of keyboards and guitars and a hair on the back of the neck vocal. Shades of Prog Metal dominate, it’s brave, it’s in your face and it’s brilliant!

The album draws to a close with the haunting title track, ‘The Healing’, an intensely personal song about finding hope amidst the fear of losing the ones you love. It’s a fabulous, emotional coda to a remarkable record.

In ‘The Healing’ we have a bone fide candidate for album of the year. It sounds absolutely incredible, with a production and mix that are nigh on perfect. It may have been ten years in the making but, McGregor and her partners have delivered something truly special. ****½

Gig review: ROGER DALTREY – London Palladium, 21 April 2025

ROGER DALTREY - London Palladium, 21 April 2025

Roger Daltrey may have retired from heading up the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts but at 81 is showing no sign of putting his feet up. Not long after the Who’s Royal Albert Hall performances (and the notorious in/out saga of Zak Starkey which he made the odd weary remark about) he was out on the road on an extensive solo tour with his own band.  Indeed, doing the old Mod run in reverse, this London show was a rarity for him, a second show in two nights after opening the tour in Brighton.

Coming on stage in studiedly low key fashion after his nine piece band, he opened with a familiar, yet oddly one of Pete Townsend’s solo offerings in ‘Let My Love Open The Door’, followed by a Taj Mahal cover Freedom Ride’ which was the first of many with a folk or Americana feel, largely thanks to Katie Jacoby’s violin and the accordion of Geraint Watkins. Indeed, at times I was reminded of Slim Chance, with whom both the latter and backing singer and guitarist Billy Nicholls share a common link.

ROGER DALTREY - London Palladium, 21 April 2025

‘Who Are You?’ was the first of a fairly generous smattering of Who numbers and the arrangement was different enough to justify their inclusion, yet at the same time still recognisably familiar. I enjoyed ‘Waiting For A Friend’ while after Roger reminisced on his early days working in a factory, ‘Days Of Light’ was another given an Americana treatment, then he sat with acoustic guitar and after paying tribute to the then unknown songwriter Leo Sayer delivered a splendid ‘Giving It All Away’, one of relatively few songs from his solo career in the set.

For all his fame he retains his blokish charm, generally affable but liable to make a grumpy aside at any moment. He may move a little more gingerly these days, but that voice remains strong, clear and instantly recognisable and better than you have a right to expect at his age.

ROGER DALTREY - London Palladium, 21 April 2025

Covers of some of his contemporaries he admired formed a significant part of the evening, though not the billed audience Q and A, which may have been a good thing as an otherwise hushed quiet was punctuated by some unfunny and pointless heckles. Recounting the controversy Paul Simon’s visit to work with South African musicians in ‘Graceland’, the band made a fine job of an unexpected ‘Boy In The Bubble’.

It gave way to a more Who-heavy segment with ‘Substitute’ and ‘Squeeze Box’ which he humorously recounted was their biggest hit in America, and setting men against women in a singing contest. However he also explored some lesser known Who gems including ‘Another Tricky Day’ and ‘Naked Eye’ where he and Simon Townshend shared the vocals.

ROGER DALTREY - London Palladium, 21 April 2025

‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ was a good example of how different arrangements breathed new life into familiar Who classics; it was the violin driving the song rather than guitars and crashing drums and Roger said he was tired of doing the scream, and left it to the audience which proved quite the spectacle. It was followed by a song you wouldn’t get at a Who concert, ‘Going Mobile’- Simon emulating his brother, with Roger’s harmonica trading off the former’s very fine voice.

Paying tribute to John Fogerty and his fight to own his back catalogue, he offered a choice of songs and ‘Have You Ever Seen The Rain’ won the vote over ‘Born On The Bayou’ as being more appropriate for England. The Billy Nicholls-penned ballad ‘Without Your Love’ was a reminder what remarkable shape his voice is still in, before a perhaps inevitable closer ‘Baba O’Riley’ with Katie playing Dave Arbus’ original solos in very lively fashion.

ROGER DALTREY - London Palladium, 21 April 2025

Surprisingly given the energetic stage performances, the crowd remained resolutely seated until applauding the band off at the end. There was a solitary encore with Roger returning alone in what, to be honest, was something of an anti-climax after what had gone before and when a song like ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ would have ended the evening nicely.

However, in paying tribute to the late Tim Hardin and playing an unfinished song of his, ‘Goodbye Hank Williams’, it fitted the recurring theme of the evening of paying tribute to musical heroes. Roger Daltrey is easily worthy of that exalted company, and I really did not expect this show to be quite as good as it was.

Album review : FRANCIS ROSSI – The Way We Were Volume 1

EAR Music [Release date: 02.05.25]

Francis Rossi – artist as purist making new music from abandoned recordings, not seen as commercial enough to pursue further at the time, or side tracked onto Quo’s then latest album.

Rossi : “Collected on this album are demo recordings that I really like, or even that I now think are better than the recorded versions that people know already . . . I hope that the fans like them as much as I do.”

All of them were written by Rossi and Bob Young, songwriter extraordinaire.

Truth is, these recordings hold value precisely because they are unique, unbranded by a record label, and have never been released in this form. One listen to ‘Electric Arena’, ‘Tongue Tied’ and ‘Pennsylvania Blues Tonight’ and the spark that was, in some degree, snuffed out by a more commercial version, will illuminate Rossi’s vision.

All three appeared on Quo’s In Search Of The Fourth Chord, an album that opened in 2007 to mixed reviews. These new/old versions strip away the unnecessary baggage that seemed to afflict the music back then, exposing three tantalising melodies and a trio of sinuous hooks. You begin to understand Rossi’s enthusiasm.

‘Gotta Get Up And Go’, ‘If You Believe’ and ‘Faded Memory’ confirm that Rossi’s studio team have breathed new life into this older material. They sound like completely new songs, fresh, sparkling, spontaneous.

The album closes with five previously unreleased tracks, still in demo form.

‘Why I’m Walking’ and ‘Strike Like Lightning’ are the picks, if only because of their immediacy.

And they are all powerful, elegant rock songs, framed within a barebones production and minimalist arrangements.

That’s the nature of The Way We Were, Volume 1. ***1/2

Feature: GRTR! Greats – ROBIN TROWER

GRTR! Greats

ROBIN TROWER – Islington Assembly Hall, London, 27 February 2018
Photo: Paul Clampin

David Randall chatted to Robin Trower for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  This feature includes some of Robin’s favourite tracks by other artists.  First broadcast 1 March 2015.

GRTR!’s Blues Rock Editor Pete Feenstra believes that with such a high profile recording career behind him, it’s always tempting to dwell on Robin Trower’s early years, particularly with Procal Harum and of course his trio of classic album in the early 70′s.

Indeed last year saw the 50th anniversary re-issue of ‘Bridge of Sighs’, an album Robin was happy to talk about, though you get the feeling he’s far more interested in what he’s doing now.

And given the fact Trower’s new releases still lead to plenty of press coverage and live dates, perhaps its time to celebrate one of the UK’s mot enduring and original rock blues guitarists.

It’s probably due to the fact he enjoyed huge success in the US while still being badgered in the UK about being a Hendrix copyist, that his standing here is marginally less than it should be.

Put simply, if you are looking for a soulful guitarist with an expressive controlled vibrato and an exquisite tone, which he has consistently applied to a related musical arc spanning blues, rock, soul, R&B and psychedelia, then Robin Trower is your man.

Trower has always been about feel and ‘being in the moment’, and as he explains: “It’s impossible to play with as much feeling in a run as a single note. I’ve never been so much into runs as making a single notes cry.”

You might wrongly have surmised that the title of his 2022 ‘No More Worlds To Conquer’, was a hint as to his own shrinking musical ambitions.

In fact nothing could be further from the truth, as he bounced back with 2023′s ‘Joyful Sky’, a vibrant collaboration with Sari Schorr. And now he continues to tour both sides of The Atlantic behind the new ‘Come And Find Me’ album, which suggests he has unfinished business.

He teasingly plays with a number of themes and ideas and as always, makes his most direct emotional connection with his enduring tone.

The new album has a contented feel, as if the inquisitive songs flowed as easily as his use of sonic mastery, spun over interwoven grooves and aching tonal inflections.

There’s not a whiff of complacency, as evidenced by the opening ‘A Little Bit Of Freedom’, with its barely disguised mission statement of independence.

As I said in my review: “The reflective nature of the album isn’t simply a corollary of life experience, but rather his more pressing unease at the world around him.”

You might argue ‘Come And Find Me preaches to the converted, but while Hendrix will always a significant influence – starting with his own ‘Song For A Dreamer’ homage – the truth is Trower’s high standing has always been a function of his own recognisable style.

And if his career has been slightly hampered by the on-going problem of never really having replaced vocalist James Dewar, it ironically pushed him to sing himself on noticeably more personal songs with more lyrical depth.

What is curious is that having got by with his own barely passable vocals and then seemingly having found a new vocal level within a spiritual framework, he then moved away from that to work with Sari Schorr and more recently to renew his relationship with the husky vocalist and bassist Richard Watts.

Perhaps the real elephant in the room has always been that Trower found his essential voice through his guitar and amps, rather than his own vocal.

Robin Trower - April/May 2018 UK Tour (flyer)

Prior to 2005 there was a lack of new albums and touring and whilst a November 2005 tour made some amends even though one gig was cancelled because the local council decreed the band were too loud!

Charlie Farrell provided our first live review, in April 2005, when he said Trower “gave a case study in the playing of a blues solo, grimacing his way through a series of harmonic and making ample use of the whammy bar on his Stratocaster.”

In May 2008 we reported that his gig was part of a “First Farewell Tour’: “If a Mars probe had dropped down on Pacific Road this evening it would have fed back that the year appears to be 1974 and there’s a shortage of hair.”

Nineteen years later, although tours have sometimes been stop/start, Robin has bucked that ill-advised farewell statement. The show goes on.

In 2024 the 50th anniversary of the classic Bridge Of Sighs was celebrated with a deluxe edition and this album still features prominently in the setlists although – when reviewing Trower in April 2006 – Robbie Kerrigan mentioned “The rehabilitation of ‘Victims Of The Fury’ (1980) is also proving popular with Robin’s fans.”

The eighties and nineties often get overlooked in coverage of Trower’s music (in the latter decade he stopped touring for five years) but there were a string of albums that often deviated from the ‘Bridge Of Sighs’ blues rock template in tune with the trends of the day.

Robin Trower

As David Randall commented in 2005 reviewing the CD and DVD: “For many, including this scribe, Robin Trower seems frozen in the seventies and, to be specific, that post-Hendrix period which yielded his best-known albums.”

Randall further commented that one of the highlights of these 2005 releases was the realisation that Trower sings on one track. “Without wishing to be unkind to Davey Pattison, it makes you think that perhaps Trower should sing more often.”

Around this time Trower was collaborating with Jack Bruce who told us, in 2009: “…we were almost in ‘separate bands together’ for over several thousand years or whatever it is, but I’ve always had an affinity with what Robin does so there was common ground.”

Jack Bruce & Robin Trower

Pete Feenstra reviewing the album 7 Moons Live noted “The interesting thing about this project is that 27 years after their last collaboration, Trower and Bruce are actually writing songs together. The material is solid if not spectacular and could probably have done with a bit more road testing before being recorded live.”

Robin is the king of tone, the prince of wah wah and the post Hendrix overseer of psychedelia  Pete Feenstra (August 2009)

Robin Trower

We’ve reviewed several reissues over the years including his debut Twice Removed From Yesterday in 2010 and a raft of releases in 2011.

These albums shone a light on a less familiar period including ‘20th Century Blues’ (1994) which to a large extent caught the early 1990s blues/rock zeitgeist following the popularity of artists like Jeff Healey and Gary Moore.

Robin Trower

As Pete Feenstra pointed out on What Lies Beneath (2009): “Robin’s stylistic shift from blues rocker to introspective tone meister … reflected in his approach to ambience, mood, tone colour and feel.” This set the template for future forays.

Robin Trower

Pete Feenstra called 2011′s Playful Heart “a very polished affair” and “a guitarist at ease with his consummate playing style full of soulful nuances and fluid phrasing. And crucial to this album is the way his playing acts as an essential catalyst for his lyrical spark. The lyrics are important as he continues the interrelationship between his music and dreamy word plays to be found on ‘What Lies Beneath’.”

Robin Trower - Something's About To Change

Pete interviewed Robin in 2013 and provided a background to the album ‘Roots & Branches’ and two years later, reviewing Something’s About To Change wrote: “It’s the work of a mature artist and a sonic explorer who long ago embraced the blues and indulges himself in a dreamy languor to search out feel, tone and deeply wrought emotion.”

ROBIN TROWER - The Lowry, Salford, 29 March 2015Photo: David Randall

Trower was 70 in the month that David Randall reviewed his gig at The Lowry, Salford. Whilst still very much rooted in the seventies, there was deeper groove in the septuagenarian’s setlist: “To the uninitiated Trower’s style may seem to be variations on a theme but he is one of the few guitarists who can really take the listener on a journey. Entrancing as well as emotional.”

Robin Trower - Where You Are Going To

And as Pete Feenstra wrote in 2016 ”You don’t so much listen to a Robin Trower album these days as simply immerse yourself in his grooves. His combination of guitar artistry, syrupy grooves, heartfelt vocals and a constant search for the emotional core in a song evokes Peter Green at his best.”

“In a world of instant downloads where albums are all but irrelevant, Trower is a timely reminder of the craft of recording a coherent body of work. He’s an enduring rock-blues guitarist who has reshaped his art into the kind of unique introspective style that makes ‘Where You Are Going To’ so damn good” This was the first of his albums where he handles all the vocals.

ROBIN TROWER – Islington Town Hall, London,18 October 2016Photo: Mark Hughes/MHP Studios

Reviewing Robin at Islington Town Hall, Feenstra expanded on what for many was Trower’s earlier Hendrix fixation:

In many ways, Trower is an object lesson in what Jimi Hendrix might have become in the autumn of his career, had he survived. Trower is a tone master for who a solo is the equivalent of a painter’s brushstroke. He says more in one eloquent phrase and with his tonal subtlety than most guitarists manage in a lifetime.

Robin Trower - Time And Emotion

2017′s Time And Emotion continued Trower’s journey of deep grooves and guitar: “While in general terms the album owes much to his conversational style of guitar playing – he shifts from one note messages to enveloping moods – it’s his choice of notes, tonal emphasis, the languid string bends and expressive vibrato that serves him well. His additional judicious use of wah-wah, makes for the understated, but very potent way in which he enhances a melody.”

On Trower’s early 2018 tour Andy Nathan described “Robin’s precise, controlled guitar tones in which each note conveys emotion and not a single one is wasted.”  Special guest Sari Schorr would ultimately collaborate with Robin on the album Joyful Sky in 2023.

Robin Trower - Closer To The Day

A year later Trower released Coming Closer To The Day when Pete Feenstra decreed: “Perhaps the biggest problem with this album is that of too many similarly paced songs and a rudimentary vocal style that doesn’t lend itself to the kind of dynamics needed to lift the album and give it a natural flow.”

Robin Trower, Maxi Priest, Livingstone Brown - United State Of Mind

Pete gave a more positive spin to the album released in 2020 with Maxi Priest and Livingstone Taylor (the guitarist’s one-time bass player and erstwhile producer).  United State Of Mind was a natural extension of Trower’s more recent musical approach and “drips with retro cool, sophisticated funk and deep soul.”

ROBIN TROWER- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 28 May 2024Photo: Paul Clampin

Pete Feenstra chatted to Robin Trower for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, to coincide with the 50th anniversary edition of ‘Bridge Of Sighs’.  This feature includes tracks from that album plus 2023′s ‘Joyful Sky’ with Sari Schorr.  First broadcast 30 June 2024.

Due to health issues Trower had to pull out of scheduled U.S. dates in late-2024 but earlier (in May) Andy Nathan was further impressed:  “…not a moment was wasted with guitar playing so immaculate and precise. He is certainly playing as well as ever and there was a sense of being privileged to see a master craftsman at work.”

Pete Feenstra refers to Rolling Stone magazine in 1973 describing Trower’s music: “Trower wrenches from his axe, thick, luscious tones drenched with tremolo and sustain. But these effects aren’t sheer electronic gimmickry; rather they enable Trower to realize a guitarist’s dream, obtaining the maximum mileage from each note.”

Robin Trower - Come & Find Me

And, as Pete continues, fast forward 52 odd years, and you’ll still find the same ethereal soundscapes, contrasting tonal colours and wah-wah inflections, a craft that gives Come And Find Me its substance.

Perhaps the album title provides the key to his current standing, as he throws down the gauntlet to suggest, he’s still out there on his own terms.

He may understandably be in a reflective mode, but he’s still forging an enduring career, fuelled by the kind of instantly recognisable style that a legion of contemporary guitarists can still only dream about.

More remarkably, at 80 years young he’s still talking about “the natural cycle” of songwriting and touring behind the new album.

He teasingly titled a 2009 album ‘What Lies Beneath’. It’s a question we may never fully know the answer to, but what we do know is that Robin Trower has made some great music finding out.

Album review: GENTLE GIANT – Playing The Fool – The Complete Live Experience

David Randall chatted to Gentle Giant frontman Derek Shulman on release day, featuring tracks from the album and with reference to Derek’s subsequent career as a top record company executive.  First broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, 4 May 2025.

GENTLE GIANT - Playing The Fool - The Complete Live Experience

Chrysalis [Release date 02.05.25] 2-CD set

Over the years, specifically in the early 2000s, Gentle Giant were subject to a series of “official bootleg” releases of dubious if historic quality.  It is only right, then, in 2025 a definitive live set is reissued with the requisite sonic and setlist tinkering.  Oh yes, and the ubiquitous 5.1 mix.

‘Playing The Fool’ is remixed and mastered and “fully reimagined”.  Wasn’t the limited edition 29–CD box set (now retailing on Amazon at £3664.84) enough for fans?  Or even the 35th anniversary edition?

The novelty here is that the original album – which was taken from several shows on the band’s tour in September/October 1976 – is now re-sequenced so that certain missing bits are restored including the between song banter.  As a result this release is trumpeted as the nearest thing you’ll get to experiencing Gentle Giant live, warts and all.  To these ears, there are few warts. Even the reference to “turning the tape over” is historically significant.

Musically, this tour marked the apex of the band’s lifespan majoring on ‘Free Hand’ but also a judicious amount from their earlier album sorties.  By the late 1970s the band was wrestling with changing musical taste and mostly the onslaught of punk and new wave.  Sadly the band tried to be a bit more “commercial” before their demise in 1980 and it didn’t really work.

For the uninitiated, they were an intense hybrid of prog, folk, jazz- and hard rock.  This also sits well with some of their early contemporaries such as Focus, Jethro Tull and Genesis and should appeal to fans of all.  Check out ‘Excerpts From Octopus’ for a good summation.

Of course, progressive rock bred excess and there is a fairly short lived drum solo but also a five minute violin solo…(one of the three “unreleased” tracks along with ‘Timing’ and  ‘Interview’).

GENTLE GIANT - Playing The Fool - The Complete Live Experience

The band were multi-instrumentalists.  Keyboard player Kerry Minnear spearheaded much of the writing (with Ray Shulman) whilst Gary Green infuses an appealing blues rock guitar throughout.  The band also used recorders, saxophone, cello and vibes whilst Derek Shulman offered his distinctive lead vocal.  The other brother Phil Shulman had left the band in 1973 whilst drummer John Weathers had replaced Martin Smith in 1972.

They did have a unique sound and have arguably become more loved in the millennium, a highlight being the Lockdown collaboration when original band members came together with fans for a multi national online version of ‘Proclamation’.

For completists it would have been nice to have included a facsimile of the 12 page booklet that came with the first 10,000 copies of the original album (it’s even excluded from the triple vinyl version).  Whatever,  this repackaging is a real triumph and for trainspotters three unreleased tracks (although included on that massively expensive box set in 2019), decent liner notes and…a poster!

Seventies prog has never sounded so good.  ****1/2

Gig review: THE CINELLI BROTHERS – The Bullingdon, Oxford, 23 April 2025

THE CINELLI BROTHERS - The Bullingdon, Oxford, 23 April 2025

Welsh singer songwriter, Laura Evans get this evening off to a cracking start. Her 30-minute opening set, during which she is backed by Will Edmonds on guitars, highlights several songs from her 2022 album, ‘State of Mind’.

We are also treated to a couple of excellent covers, Bonnie Raitt’s, ‘Love Me Like A Man’ and Chris Stapleton’s, ‘Arkansas’. Laura has a wonderful, powerful voice, well suited to the stripped back country-tinged blues we witness tonight. Great to see that so many folk had made the effort to arrive early, support the support, and get the night off to a flyer.

The Cinelli Brothers have come a long way since their debut release, back in 2018, but their focus has remained firmly fixed on their mission, to bring their own particular flavour of the blues to the masses. Now touring in support of their fourth album, ‘Almost Exactly…’ (2024), the Cinelli’s have a voracious hunger for the road, as last years total of 270 gigs demonstrates and the 2 hour set we witnessed here once again shows a band constantly pushing the limits. It’s no surprise that that they were voted Best British Blues Band in 2024

Having seen the guys just a few weeks ago in a double header with Brave Rival, I thought I knew what to expect but I really wasn’t prepared for the utter brilliance of tonight’s performance, they just keep upping their game and getting better and better.

From the word go they clearly mean business and there’s a glint in the eye of Marco Cinelli as he takes to the stage, settles in behind the Hammond Organ and eases the band into the soulful opening number, ‘Don’t Need No Favor’.

Marco’s brother, Alessandro, lays down the beat on drums and congas (at the same time…how does he do that!) while for this song Tom Julian-Jones and Jorma Gasperi (deputising for the absent Stephen Giri) handle guitar and bass duties, respectively. I say for this song as a feature of the night is how the guys trade instruments on a regular basis: Marco adds guitar and harmonica to his repertoire, Alessandro dabbles on the bass guitar as does Tom when he’s not playing some blistering harmonica, at which point Jorma proves himself to be no fool on the six string. Oh, and they all sing!

There’s a bit of everything in the sound the Cinelli’s conjure up (the Cinelli Sound?). They may be firmly anchored in the Chicago Blues sound of the 1960s but, the variations on that theme take us through soulful backstreets into smoky jazz joints and onto stages that sway with a Latin swing vibe that would have Carlos Santana grinning from ear to ear as he jams along.

THE CINELLI BROTHERS - The Bullingdon, Oxford, 23 April 2025

This is live music as it should be and there’s a palpable connection between stage and audience which echoes back to the band, with main man Marco acting as the conduit, mischievous, amusing and totally in tune with us all.

Every song is a highlight, from the glorious gospel infused ‘Prayer’ to the ten minute jam through Tony Joe White’s ‘Polk Salad Annie’ featuring a guest appearance from Paul Campbell. Local legend, Krissy Matthews stepped up for a romp through ‘Still Have You On My Mind’ and then, just when you think you have heard it all they throw in a cover of Steve Miller’s ‘Jet Airliner’. Magnificent stuff!

A quite fantastic evening courtesy of a great band, an appreciative audience, and a superb front of house sound. Can’t wait to see these guys again!

Album review: GILLAN – Future Shock, Magic

GILLAN - Future Shock

Demon Music Group [Release date 25.04.25]

To coincide with Demon’s recent 7-CD Gillan box, they have released these two wonderful albums in expanded format, and just to behold, wonderful they are too.

Led by then former and again now current Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan and the first of these sets, 1981’s Future Shock, was their fourth LP.. Much more hard rock than the jazzy Ian Gillan Band of the late 70s, Gillan had a number of hit singles, hit tours, and produced some fine fine rock that mixed blues and blistering metal. And sadly, too often over looked.

Future Shock featured longtime keyboardist Colin Towns, bassist John McCoy, guitarist Bernie Torme and former Episode Six/Sammy bandmate Mick Underwood on drums.

The first replicates the original LP and kicks off with the title track. Good pace, great tune, lots of fire, set the tone well. The band each of five ways were on top of their game here; as John McCoy once told me; “We had the right singer, and we were the right band to push him in the right direction”.

So the whole set follows Gillan, Mr Universe and Glory Road nicely. Although the band were really not NWoBHM, they were album ride (if not lead) the genre’s then success.

‘The Lucitania Express’ tells a true story of catching a train from Madrid to Lisbon while on tour, literally throwing their equipment and themselves onto an already departing train. And the hit single ‘No Laughing In Heaven’ (a proto rap rock)  written about a conversation overheard in a bar.

‘If I Sing Softly’ on side 2 sees a different aspect to Gillan’s vocals, while ‘Don’t Want The Truth’ and ‘For Your Dreams’ see some of the band’s best material and Ian’s phrasing bang on form too.

The second disc features previous added as bonus tracks to CD, so there’s the non LP single ‘Trouble’ (the Elvis cover) and it’s delightful B-side ‘Your Sister’s On My List’.

‘The Maelstrom’, a single B-side, was also the title of a book Ian was reading at the time. The band were given 24 hours to come up with a song so the key and tempo were agreed over a pint in the pub next to the studio, and Ian largely ad-libbing the vocal track. No Laughing In Heaven had been issued as a 4 track EP so the extra 3 tracks are here, including a wonderful cover of ‘Lucille’.

Future Shock is presented in a wonderful gatefold sleeve, inner sleeves, a sold coloured vinyl, and the original booklet stapled into the gatefold is reproduced as an insert here.

The album sounds as good as it looks, and feels. Top marks.

Guitarist Bernie, the Electric Gypsy, left during the subsequent tour, probably on the back of more than one bad business decision, and in came former White Spirit (and current Iron Maiden) guitarist Janick Gers.

Double Trouble was recorded the same year, then we got Magic in 1982. Gers was a little more Blackmore-esque, certainly more melodic, and there’s also the feeling of Colin Towns taking a bit more control, so there is a shift in the band’s sound, but wonderful it still is.

Solid, heavy, but a little more polished. ‘Bluesy Blue Sea’ is just a lovely listen, ‘Demon Driver’ picks things up in a very rocking fashion, and the lighter ‘Long Gone’ a great tune. Gers has some great riffs, and Ian’s voice still the top of its game.

I’ve always loved the cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Living For The City’ too.

The second LP features a number of single B-sides, some studio outtakes, and a late 80s Ian Gillan 45 ‘South Africa’ (and B-side). This track features Bernie Marsden on guitar.

Presented an a replica of the original gatefold, with inner sleeves and solid coloured vinyl.

Again this set sounds as good as it looks, and feels. Top marks.

Leaving aside the bad business decisions that led to the band’s early demise, there is such a great catalogue here that could have gone on and on. But such is life.

This classic hard rock is as good as it gets, but even if you already own it, reissues like this are a joy to behold. *****

Gig review: MORGANWAY – Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The two songs that book-ended tonight’s gig give a clue about Morganway’s current positioning and maybe dilemma. In between we had a mix of tunes mainly from the current album but indicating the band can just as easily slip into roots rock/country folk as much as the more mainstream. Perhaps confusing – or frustrating – for  some listeners.

Following the opening rallying call of ‘Hurricane’ (from their debut album) and ‘Feels Like Letting Go’ we were treated to the more poppy, even seventies-vibe, ‘Boy On The Train’ and ‘Goddamn Time’ both with lead vocals by bassist Callum Morgan.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

A new song bemoaning Spotify called ‘Machine’ lacked the immediacy of much of the new album.  This meant that the initial momentum dipped a little revealing that dichotomy between the rootsy and the more rocky.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The band’s major asset is the terrific vocal of SJ Mortimer.  She might look and sound a little like a young Janis Joplin, giving full belt on a song like ‘Surrender’ and the rip roaring ‘Devil’s Canyon’.  Her vocal easily transforms from a raunchy growl to the more emotive.  The latter song also signposting a band like Larkin Poe whilst overall I am reminded of the long lost River City People (See Bands That Time Forgot).

SJ’s vibrant personality carried this gig and also very genuine when later she said she didn’t want the night to end (this was the penultimate gig of the tour) fronting the evocative ‘Don’t Turn The Lights On Yet’.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The band’s more folky credentials were given full rein on the piece ‘London Life’. with Nicole Terry’s fiddle to the fore whilst the somewhat enchanting “campfire sessions” (complete with strip light!) saw the band (and support artists Dylan Taylor and Gina Larner) come in to the audience for a communal version of “Halfway Tonight”.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The band rallied with the wonderful groove of ‘Kill The Silence’ and the superb ‘I Feel The Rain’.

Welcome Spotify gibes aside the question has to be asked why this band is not playing bigger venues. At the moment their enterprise seems very much a cottage industry with the girls even tie-dyeing the shirts for the merch stall.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

Several festivals beckon this summer.  Hopefully they’ll be back touring in the autumn when their audiences will be able to make up for lost time.

Reviewed early on by our News and Reviews editor Jason Ritchie,  “Kill The Silence” will surely remain as one of this year’s finest and evidently backed up with great live performance.

Morganway’s time has come.
