Album review: GILLAN – Future Shock, Magic

GILLAN - Future Shock

Demon Music Group [Release date 25.04.25]

To coincide with Demon’s recent 7-CD Gillan box, they have released these two wonderful albums in expanded format, and just to behold, wonderful they are too.

Led by then former and again now current Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan and the first of these sets, 1981’s Future Shock, was their fourth LP.. Much more hard rock than the jazzy Ian Gillan Band of the late 70s, Gillan had a number of hit singles, hit tours, and produced some fine fine rock that mixed blues and blistering metal. And sadly, too often over looked.

Future Shock featured longtime keyboardist Colin Towns, bassist John McCoy, guitarist Bernie Torme and former Episode Six/Sammy bandmate Mick Underwood on drums.

The first replicates the original LP and kicks off with the title track. Good pace, great tune, lots of fire, set the tone well. The band each of five ways were on top of their game here; as John McCoy once told me; “We had the right singer, and we were the right band to push him in the right direction”.

So the whole set follows Gillan, Mr Universe and Glory Road nicely. Although the band were really not NWoBHM, they were album ride (if not lead) the genre’s then success.

‘The Lucitania Express’ tells a true story of catching a train from Madrid to Lisbon while on tour, literally throwing their equipment and themselves onto an already departing train. And the hit single ‘No Laughing In Heaven’ (a proto rap rock)  written about a conversation overheard in a bar.

‘If I Sing Softly’ on side 2 sees a different aspect to Gillan’s vocals, while ‘Don’t Want The Truth’ and ‘For Your Dreams’ see some of the band’s best material and Ian’s phrasing bang on form too.

The second disc features previous added as bonus tracks to CD, so there’s the non LP single ‘Trouble’ (the Elvis cover) and it’s delightful B-side ‘Your Sister’s On My List’.

‘The Maelstrom’, a single B-side, was also the title of a book Ian was reading at the time. The band were given 24 hours to come up with a song so the key and tempo were agreed over a pint in the pub next to the studio, and Ian largely ad-libbing the vocal track. No Laughing In Heaven had been issued as a 4 track EP so the extra 3 tracks are here, including a wonderful cover of ‘Lucille’.

Future Shock is presented in a wonderful gatefold sleeve, inner sleeves, a sold coloured vinyl, and the original booklet stapled into the gatefold is reproduced as an insert here.

The album sounds as good as it looks, and feels. Top marks.

Guitarist Bernie, the Electric Gypsy, left during the subsequent tour, probably on the back of more than one bad business decision, and in came former White Spirit (and current Iron Maiden) guitarist Janick Gers.

Double Trouble was recorded the same year, then we got Magic in 1982. Gers was a little more Blackmore-esque, certainly more melodic, and there’s also the feeling of Colin Towns taking a bit more control, so there is a shift in the band’s sound, but wonderful it still is.

Solid, heavy, but a little more polished. ‘Bluesy Blue Sea’ is just a lovely listen, ‘Demon Driver’ picks things up in a very rocking fashion, and the lighter ‘Long Gone’ a great tune. Gers has some great riffs, and Ian’s voice still the top of its game.

I’ve always loved the cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Living For The City’ too.

The second LP features a number of single B-sides, some studio outtakes, and a late 80s Ian Gillan 45 ‘South Africa’ (and B-side). This track features Bernie Marsden on guitar.

Presented an a replica of the original gatefold, with inner sleeves and solid coloured vinyl.

Again this set sounds as good as it looks, and feels. Top marks.

Leaving aside the bad business decisions that led to the band’s early demise, there is such a great catalogue here that could have gone on and on. But such is life.

This classic hard rock is as good as it gets, but even if you already own it, reissues like this are a joy to behold. *****

Gig review: MORGANWAY – Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The two songs that book-ended tonight’s gig give a clue about Morganway’s current positioning and maybe dilemma. In between we had a mix of tunes mainly from the current album but indicating the band can just as easily slip into roots rock/country folk as much as the more mainstream. Perhaps confusing – or frustrating – for  some listeners.

Following the opening rallying call of ‘Hurricane’ (from their debut album) and ‘Feels Like Letting Go’ we were treated to the more poppy, even seventies-vibe, ‘Boy On The Train’ and ‘Goddamn Time’ both with lead vocals by bassist Callum Morgan.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

A new song bemoaning Spotify called ‘Machine’ lacked the immediacy of much of the new album.  This meant that the initial momentum dipped a little revealing that dichotomy between the rootsy and the more rocky.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The band’s major asset is the terrific vocal of SJ Mortimer.  She might look and sound a little like a young Janis Joplin, giving full belt on a song like ‘Surrender’ and the rip roaring ‘Devil’s Canyon’.  Her vocal easily transforms from a raunchy growl to the more emotive.  The latter song also signposting a band like Larkin Poe whilst overall I am reminded of the long lost River City People (See Bands That Time Forgot).

SJ’s vibrant personality carried this gig and also very genuine when later she said she didn’t want the night to end (this was the penultimate gig of the tour) fronting the evocative ‘Don’t Turn The Lights On Yet’.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The band’s more folky credentials were given full rein on the piece ‘London Life’. with Nicole Terry’s fiddle to the fore whilst the somewhat enchanting “campfire sessions” (complete with strip light!) saw the band (and support artists Dylan Taylor and Gina Larner) come in to the audience for a communal version of “Halfway Tonight”.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

The band rallied with the wonderful groove of ‘Kill The Silence’ and the superb ‘I Feel The Rain’.

Welcome Spotify gibes aside the question has to be asked why this band is not playing bigger venues. At the moment their enterprise seems very much a cottage industry with the girls even tie-dyeing the shirts for the merch stall.

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

MORGANWAY - Thekla, Bristol, 25 April 2025

Several festivals beckon this summer.  Hopefully they’ll be back touring in the autumn when their audiences will be able to make up for lost time.

Reviewed early on by our News and Reviews editor Jason Ritchie,  “Kill The Silence” will surely remain as one of this year’s finest and evidently backed up with great live performance.

Morganway’s time has come.

Album review : MAESTRICK – Espresso Della Vita : Lunare

Frontiers Music [Release date : 02/05/25]

The progressive metal terrain is well mapped. Few destinations remain undiscovered.
Yet, Brazilian band, Maestrick, staked their own claim, blending surrealism with artistry on their well received debut album, Unpuzzle, in 2011.

And now, day turns to night on Espresso Della Vita : Lunare, the follow up to their second album, EDV : Solare (2019), and the next stage of the band’s (train) journey through life.
It’s a well used metaphor, but it’s a cool foundational narrative for a powerful, big hitting Progressive Metal album.

The band works hard to craft sensory overload and atmospherics, making particularly good use of soundscape and transitions, pulling us one way, then the other, hitting us unexpectedly with movie like jump cuts.

This works really well on ‘Boo!’ and ‘Upside Down’, conveying moods and meanings, on what seem like deranged Disney musicals’ soundtracks, full of seesawing melodies, changes of pace and adrenaline bursts of heavily soundscaped prog overtones.

The album highpoint comes early, the fabulous ‘Ghost Casino’, like a Broadway show tune, full of verve, full of bite, with a huge knowing smile on its face.
The thought of tracks like this being a soundtrack to a Rocky Horror, Prog Metal stage musical is hard to escape.

The wonderful ‘Mad Witches’ is a “Beauty and The Beast” styled duet, with massed, stage musical backing vocals. Highly dramatic moments, beautifully orchestrated, fight for the same space with humorous exchanges and rushing passages. There’s always a sense of managed chaos. So much so that you could put the narrative to one side and enjoy the album as a purely immersive experience,

They craft more unique musical stories with ‘The Root’ and ‘Sunflower Eyes’.

The first binds strings, the classics, monstrous time changes and minor key bgv harmonies, to a labyrinthine arrangement.

The second, sketched around a cool piano motif, is the album’s obligatory ballad. It’s an evocative love song with grown up sentiments and an understated arrangement. It could make it in the straight world.

As claimed by Fabio Caldeira, the band’s vocalist:

“This is our most ambitious, grandiose work… we are storytellers, musical illustrators of scenes, landscapes and feelings.”

They are all of that, and more. ****

Album review: FOLKLAW – Catch The Sun

FOLKLAW – Catch the Sun

Fiddle of 8 Records [Release date 25.04.25]

FolkLaw are a Nottinghamshire-based folk-rock band led by founder Nick Gibbs (fiddle, vocals), Bryn Williams (vocals, guitar, bodhran), Martin Vogwell (vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitars), Gaz Hunt (drums, percussion, vocals), Helen Harper (flute) and  Jon Dowling (bass). Nick and Martin are the main songwriters and all the songs are originals, many with a fine toe-tapping melody about them.

‘Catch The Sun’ marks the first new album from FolkLaw in six years and was co-produced by long-time Gerry Colvin sideman Lyndon Webb, who also plays mandolin and guitars. Guests on the album include Paul Hutchinson (accordion), Emma Vogwell (alto sax), Steve Harper (trumpet) and Paul McLaughlin (trombone).

Then we have ‘He Dances’, a neat fusion of a reggae beat coupled with flute and guitar. Those toes get tapping on ‘Bookshop’, a song which has a topical lyrical theme. Loving the lyric “Why can’t all the world be like a bookshop/All the subjects sitting side by side.”

Rousing tunes like ‘Hope Is Still Alive’, with its lively fiddle and flute playing, are a mood uplifter in these dark and troubled times. The more traditional folkies will enjoy ‘Shire Man’, with its sing-a-long chorus and ‘Fighting For Charlie’, a song about Bonnie Prince Charlie, is a lively affair with the lyrics giving a potted history of the prince.

FolkLaw have the wide folk rock appeal of Ferocious Dog, The Levellers and Show of Hands and doubtless wow the crowds at festivals. ‘Catch The Sun’ is a gem of an album and one that gets better and better with each play. ****

Gig review: BENEFIT FOR MICK UNDERWOOD- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 18 April 2025

BENEFIT FOR MICK UNDERWOOD- The Cavern, Raynes Park, 18 April 2025

Mick Underwood had a long and distinguished career in that most physically punishing of roles in a rock band. In the sixties he was not only drummer with Episode Six but recommended their singer Ian Gillan for Deep Purple, so it is no hyperbole to say he changed the course of rock history.

Later he played with Gillan’s eponymous band throughout their great period and in more recent times founded Raw Glory, and then Mick Underwood’s Glory Road to resurrect Gillan and other songs from his past, with some musicians of great pedigree. In both of those acts he was happy playing the smaller pubs and clubs particularly in South West London. I never met him but by all accounts he was a modest man unaware how much this music touched his fans.

A year after his passing from a long illness, both those most recent bands reformed for one night only to pay tribute to him at a familiar venue with this benefit gig.

BENEFIT FOR MICK UNDERWOOD- The Cavern, Raynes Park, 18 April 2025

Going in chronological order, Raw Glory came first and an illustration of that pedigree was that they were fronted by Paul Manzi, witnessed only a couple of weeks prior commanding the stage of the Shepherds Bush Empire with Sweet. He came on to pay some words of tribute to Mick (as well as another recently passed drumming great in Les Binks who had also played with Raw Glory), though surprisingly then left the stage to a trio of bandmates for a couple of lengthy blues workouts, including Joe Bonamassa’s ‘The Ballad of John Henry’.

Bass player PJ  Phillips was more than respectable on the vocals himself and as usual Cosmo Verrico from the Heavy Metal Kids was unflashy but coaxed a beautiful tone out of his Les Paul. Indeed when Paul returned it was for what I always think of as one of the HMK’s more traditional classic rock moments in ‘Hanging On’.

BENEFIT FOR MICK UNDERWOOD- The Cavern, Raynes Park, 18 April 2025

Raw Glory’s own material was deep and bluesy, like a drier version of classic Whitesnake. After seeing Paul Manzi handle more melodic material with Cats in Space and Sweet it was a timely reminder he can be just as good a heavy blues rock belter. Examples were ‘City Life’,  ‘Bad Girls’, ‘Down So Long’ and ‘White Lies’.

In between were some superbly executed covers. ‘In A Broken Dream’ was no less than epic, while ‘Don’t Believe A Word’ put Cosmo’s versatility to the test as it was played in the alternative slow bluesy version with the more familiar fast-paced gallop tackled on to the end. The dirty riffing of Montrose’s ‘Rock Candy’ ended a truly splendid set.

BENEFIT FOR MICK UNDERWOOD- The Cavern, Raynes Park, 18 April 2025

With two band members who I understand had never played with them before including keyboardist Gab Soulavy, and guitarist Jeff Summers (playing alongside bassist brother Gary) just flown in especially from Spain, it was entirely forgivable that Glory Road did a quick soundcheck of ‘Smoke On the Water’. However to my surprise singer Luka Ravase came on halfway through and we were onto the gig proper in very impressive fashion.

It was soon onto Gillan songs, Jeff shredding his way through ‘Secret Of the Dance’ and the catchy riff of ‘Sleeping On the Job’, then ‘She Tears Me Down’ building from its quiet beginnings into a bit of an epic.

BENEFIT FOR MICK UNDERWOOD- The Cavern, Raynes Park, 18 April 2025

As more than one friend mentioned during the evening, Gillan had a high profile at the dawn of the eighties and were regulars on shows from ‘Top of the Pops’ to ‘Tiswas’, yet compared to the rest of the Purple family tree are almost forgotten about by makers of playlists and compilations. That was one of the pleasures of Glory Road originally and it was great after several years to again be reminded of their quirkily original songs.

In excited fashion Luka recounted his pride in going from a childhood fan who had a Gillan poster on his wall to becoming Glory Road’s second and last singer. I understand his main gig these days is a Deep Purple tribute and this showed in the ease the lean Italian screamed the high notes, though on the punkier ‘Vengeance’ his roar sounded more like Noddy Holder.

Talking of which, as we sang along to the ‘hey hey hey hey yeah’ intro to ‘New Orleans’, a friend and I joked whether it was this or Slade’s ‘We’ll Bring The House Down’ came first. ‘No Easy Way’ saw some excellent call and response guitar and organ jamming between Jeff and Gab in the best Purple tradition, before a couple from Mick’s early seventies band Quatermass- a stonking version  of ‘Black Sheep Of the Family’ (famously covered by Rainbow) and the contrasting ‘Good Lord Knows’ in almost baroque style with the keyboard sounding like a harpsichord.

BENEFIT FOR MICK UNDERWOOD- The Cavern, Raynes Park, 18 April 2025

Back to the Gillan songs, ‘No Laughing in Heaven’ saw Luka master Ian Gillan’s eccentric spoken dialogue, while the biggest cheers of the night greeted the intro to the epic ‘Mr Universe’. Sadly and possibly due to licensing constraints it was the last song so the encore I expected of ‘Trouble’ never materialised. Special mention has to go to Julius Gamski for fulfilling so well the unenviable task of replacing Mick himself on the drums.

It was a memorable one- off tribute show, not least as it raised a significant amount of money for Mick’s chosen charity, but wouldn’t it be nice if somehow it became a regular event?

Album review: THE DAVIDSON TRIO – Cougar

The Davidson Trio - Cougar

Self Release [Release date: 14.03.25]

The Davidson Trio’s ‘Cougar’ is a booming, well crafted, hard rock and blues album with a funky soulful heart.

It’s a winning combination of timeless songs, great playing and ‘live in the studio’ organic feel.

From the opening riff driven ‘Medusa Touch’ – a bulldozer of a track – to the reworked book-end of ‘Catfish Blues’,  The Davidson Trio resurrect the interwoven historic roots of The Black Country in general, and Trapeze in particular, on an album of groove-led hard rocking blues.

And 55 years after Trapeze so narrowly missed breaking big, The Davidson Trio pull out all the stops to remind us just how good an excellent power trio can be

If you’ve ever wondered how a trio can sometimes sound so big, the answer is provided here by 3 stellar musicians who articulate the rudiments of the power trio format.

There’s a blizzard of extended chords, incendiary lead guitar and a lilting bass lines from a vocalist who effortlessly hits the notes with a soulful feel.

Put simply, when there’s nowhere to hide, you have to have both the chops and the material, and ‘Cougar’ has that in spades.

‘Medusa Touch’ plays to the band’s strengths of subtle, but intense interplay topped by majestic vocals and Ben Bicknell intense riffs.

The album flows, sparkles and ultimately rocks out, over deep funky grooves and a bluesy undertow, while Owen Davidson’s 5 -octave voice almost demands he spreads his musical influences around.

With a history including Uli Jon Roth and Rumour, its no surpise that his muscular bass playing glues everything together while his peerless vocals always play to the strengths of the songs. And what songs they are!

So while the band is not here to reinvent the wheel, they restate long forgotten values, too often obfuscated by an endless stream of American led razzle dazzle.

Make no mistake, The Davidson Trio is proud of itsWest Midlands heritage, while Owen Davidson’s bass and vocal combination will always draw comparisons with his musical hero Glenn Hughes.

There’s an undoubted swagger to the title track which musically makes a direct connection between music and geography.

It might be a Stone Age homage to older women, and the opening vocal on the track has been humorously compared to Barry White singing the blues, but even the big man himself would love to have owned this piece of phasing on a great album opener.

And as Davidson sings “I’m coming through”, flanked by Ben Bicknell’s crashing chords and two piercing solos over a drum tight rhythm section, you quickly realise you are in the presence of a great hard rock band.

There are plenty of angular riffs, ferocious solos and enveloping grooves, but also musical diversity, as on the burgeoning ‘Hold On’, complete with a ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ feel.

Each track pulls you into the next one and by the time of the very ‘live in the studio’ ‘The Cure’, we’re back to fuzzy riffs, funky chords and a stop-time vocal.

There’s even room for a bluesy shuffle called ‘The Deep’, which might owe its position as the second track on the album due to the way it subliminally makes you think of the late Gary Moore.

Suffice it to say Bicknell fills his shoes admirably.

Perhaps the really great thing about ‘Cougar’ is that it works both as an album as a whole, and also with download culture style stand alone tracks.

Whatever the format,  the music draw you in, especially the Bicknell vibrato-led intensity of ‘Blue River’, which also act as a foil for Davidson cool vocal.

They finish with an up tempo version ‘Catfish Blues’, which they attack with vim and vigour to transform it into something far more essential,  as they jam briefly and work towards an explosive finale on which drummer Ellis Brown is imperious.

The Davidson Trio brings credibility back to the power trio format. ‘Cougar’ is a fresh, vibrant, and a very welcome slice of primo rocking blues.

The future looks bright, the future is Brummie. ****

Album review: GYPSY PISTOLEROS – Church of the Pistoleros

Earache Records [Release date 02.05.25]

The Gypsy Pistoleros are back again with their upcoming album ‘Church of the Pistoleros’.

Having being a fan and personal friend of the band for around 3 years or so, and knowing how hard they go on and off stage, I was eagerly awaiting this new offering.

With rave reviews already pouring in I am very honoured to have been personally asked to review this album.  Having also had inside access to exclusives before they were officially announced, to say I was hyped was an understatement.

So let’s get into it!

With track 1  ’Church of the Pistoleros’ I can immediately tell this is a new era for the band. This track is so punk! It’s unapologetic and exactly what this band is about. Sticking the finger up to society’s idea of being a certain way. It’s a celebration of the weird and wonderful. An anthem for the underdogs. We have officially been blessed musically and metaphorically in lyrical context. The musical synergy is instantaneous.

Moving swiftly on to ‘Shadow Walker’ this felt darker in tone and a hell of a lot gritter than I’ve heard before which is a massive win for me. I am in awe of the switch in sound. Is there anything the Pistoleros can’t do? Gypsy Lee has this shape shifting ability to create soft haunting tones, hold one hell of a note, borderline metal growl all whilst being punk AF!

‘Whatever Happened to the Old Town’ a heartfelt ode to things changing but never forgetting your roots and where you grew up and started dreaming. Somewhere that no matter what, will hold a special place and bring back many memories.

‘Last Train to Nowhere’ metaphor for life’s journey? One hell of a ride and you’re not sure where you will end up, but it’s such a thrill? This is what I’m getting from the lyrics and the pace of the song. Adrenaline kick and so fun.

‘Livin la Vida loca’the original has always been a guilty pleasure (I have Shrek to thank for that!) but this has been taken and moulded into such a bad ass rock cover which I definitely wouldn’t say is a guilty pleasure! Love the riffs on this.

‘I’m In Love with Myself’ I absolutely loved this!! What an anthem of self acceptance and self love! So many people need tracks like this. Unapologetic and uplifting.

‘Last of the Commancheros’ bringing back the flamenco flavour for this one. This is the quintessential Pistoleros sound that they have been known for. Although the new direction in sound is incredible, it’s nice to have a track that is still reminiscent of the Pistoleros sound I first heard and fell in love with.

‘Dance Naked in the Rain’ I can really hone in on the amazing talents of Kerry white on the bass here! The instrumental  formation is so tight and slick. Love the riffs and the grittier overall tone of this track.

‘Hide Behind A Smile’ we all love a rock ballad/anthem track and the Pistoleros are consistent with delivering absolute belters and this is absolutely no different exception. The song lyrically delving into mental health and having someone to talk to.

‘The Prayer’ in keeping with the church theme this is biblical on another level. Taking the hands of those in need and guiding them into the light of the Pistoleros. Such a beautiful and clever way to end the album.

This album I have to say is nothing short of epic. New directions are something that all bands go through and many fail through the process. But the Pistoleros have truly flourished! I absolutely love the change up! The ability to show diversity yet stay true to your roots is nothing short of admirable.

There’s so many nuances from the flamenco feel and the lyricism painting the picture track by track evolving into a story of being led into a journey of self love and self acceptance.

This is an album for the freaks, weirdos, or anyone who has felt like they don’t belong. I use those terms in endearment as I have been Called those names many times but I fully embrace who I am. This is an album in celebration of that!

Being true to yourself and being unapologetically you, and those times you are lost and in need of guidance, The church of the Pistoleros is here to welcome you with open arms.

This is the message I get from the album, and my god it’s beautiful!

So proud of these guys! They have absolutely smashed it! *****

Album review : RAVEN – Screamin’ Down The House (4 CD set)

Cherry Red [Release date : 25.04.25]

Formed in the north of England by brothers John and Mark Gallagher, during a time of social upheaval in the UK, Raven forged their own reflective version of NWOBHM, a proto-thrash metal that found many advocates among the UK Metal Media.

Their debut, the legendary, larger than life, “live in the studio” Rock Until You Drop album (1981) led to support gigs with Motorhead, Metallica and Megadeath.

Learning that live was their true milieu, the band hit the road, constantly, clocking up significant mileage, gathering fans and a fast growing reputation.

Inevitably, they signed on with a major, moving to New York, and Atlantic Records.

Disc 1 : Stay Hard (1985)
Disc 2 : The Pack Is Back, plus Mad EP (1986)
Disc 3 : Life’s A Bitch (1987)
Disc 4 : Nothing Exceeds Like Excess (1988)

They released three albums on Atlantic, before throwing off the major label restrictions that reduced Life’s A Bitch to a more conservative sounding version of heavy metal.

And in its way, the explicitly titled Nothing Exceeds Like Excess was a reflection of the band’s normally frantic pace. Where other bands were surviving on their reputation, coasting on fumes, Raven has resumed their helter skelter heavy metal ride through the eighties.

1985’s Stay Hard had created considerable kudos for the band in the US, with the album breaking the Billboard album charts, and single ‘On And On’ getting significant plays on MTV.

The follow up album, The Pack Is Back was produced by the legendary Eddie Kramer, forcing the band down a more commercial route, leading to redemption on their self produced EP, Mad. This was a disaffiliation from the mainstream, and a return to the hard and the fast and the loud. Where it all began.

Life’s A Bitch was their farewell to Atlantic. A year later they recorded and self produced Nothing Exceeds Like Excess, falling into the open arms of the influential US rock and metal label, Combat Records.

It was a return to form of epic proportions, you could see how badly the band had needed to escape the major label straitjacket.

It was (and still is) full of immense power and glory tracks like ‘Into The Jaws Of Death’, ‘Lay The Law Down’ and ‘Thunderlord’. All designed to restore the band’s reputation to the early days.

Combat Records ultimately folded, and the band moved to SPV. ***1/2

Gig review: JOHN REILLY AND LEWIS NITIKMAN – Crazy Coqs, London, 16 April 2025

JOHN REILLY AND LEWIS NIKITMAN- Crazy Coqs, London, 16 April 2025

John Reilly and Lewis Nitikman are a partnership of talented musicians, one born and raised in Liverpool and the other a Canadian, who met in Toronto and are now domiciled in Sheffield. Both are original songwriters, with John the lead singer of Boy On A Dolphin who were signed to Atlantic Records in the early nineties and then having collaborated with Lewis on a well-received solo album ‘Zebulon’. However, their current live activity focuses on shows dedicated to the music of Billy Joel and Elton John.

This prestigious Central London show- in the Crazy Coqs cabaret venue attached to the art deco ’ Zedel’ French brasserie in the heart of Piccadilly- had the strapline ‘Two Rooms’ and was focused (though not exclusively, as we shall see) on the songs of Sir Elton and Bernie Taupin, with both performers admitting their deep love for this body of work and how it had influenced them.

JOHN REILLY AND LEWIS NIKITMAN- Crazy Coqs, London, 16 April 2025

While not a traditional tribute act as such, John did bear a passing resemblance to latter-day Elton in baseball cap, thick black glasses and a spangly jacket. Opening with ‘Circle of Life’, the duo filled out the sound to closer to a full band, Lewis playing bass synth pedals as well as piano, and John percussion much of the time, be it timpani or an African djembe.

On ‘Candle In The Wind’, it really stood out in this intimate environment how John’s vocal phrasing and the way he controlled his breathing really captured the timbre of Elton’s voice in its various ranges. With the great man himself officially retired from shows, this may be as close as you can get to hearing the songs delivered as they should be. After I guess ‘That’s Why They Call It the Blues’, ‘Your Song’ saw Lewis switch to the venue’s grand piano, putting to the test their joke that they were reluctant for people to sing along and, if so only in tune.

JOHN REILLY AND LEWIS NIKITMAN- Crazy Coqs, London, 16 April 2025

That love for Elton and Bernie’s songs showed in a varied setlist that covered the full range of his long career. Alongside familiar favourites like ‘Tiny Dancer’ and ‘The One’, there was a generous selection of seventies album cuts. These included ‘Have Mercy On The Criminal’ with percussion and piano creating a very atmospheric sound, ‘Burn Down The Mission’ and ‘Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters’.

However, in a departure from the theme of the evening, the pair dramatically, and brilliantly, reinterpreted Cher’s huge dance hit ‘Believe’ as a big slow ballad. Perhaps encouraged by that, a visitor from Hong Kong piped up to request ‘Arthur’s Theme’ by Christopher Cross and the two produced an authentic shortened version at the drop of the hat, which was as much proof of their talent as delivering the advertised programme.

JOHN REILLY AND LEWIS NIKITMAN- Crazy Coqs, London, 16 April 2025

Getting back to the theme of the evening, the extended intro of ‘Tonight’ was the perfect vehicle to appreciate Lewis’ piano playing, but with two shows a night in the venue, they were up against a short timescale so it was back into hits territory for those off-kilter melodies of ‘Bennie and The Jets’, and a medley of ‘I’m Still Standing’ and ‘Sacrifice’.

Finally, they sneaked in an encore which appropriately was ‘Rocket Man’. The show was not only a treat for Elton John fans but the way they breathed their heart and soul into his and Bernie Taupin’s songbook (plus the odd surprise) was a taster of how much these two talented musicians can offer.

Album review : DEAR MR.FANTASY Featuring the Music of Jim Capaldi and Traffic (2CD+DVD remaster)

Cherry Red [Release date : 25.04.25]

The only surprise with this Jim Capaldi tribute release is that it’s taken so long for any label to do him justice.

Cherry Red stepped in this year, and is to be commended for treating the source material with the respect it deserves.

This 2 CD and Blu-ray DVD release captures the live gig recorded at London’s iconic Roundhouse venue in 2007, memorialising the life and work of writer/ musician/ producer, Jim Capaldi.

Headline names abound.

Among others, Steve Winwood, Joe Walsh, Gary Moore, Pete Townshend, Simon Kirke and Paul Weller all pay tribute to Capaldi’s enduring legacy on these recently remastered recordings.

Few rock fans will be unaware that Capaldi played a key role in the formation of influential UK Rock band, Traffic. And indeed, its worldwide success.

His lyrics were charged with everyday irony, but unfolded with the ease of spoken language. “All” Winwood had to do was write a melody that matched. And he did, many times.

Their best known collaborations, ‘Paper Sun’, ‘Forty Thousand Headmen’ and of course ‘Dear MrFantasy’ are performed here, respectively, by Paul Weller, Joe Walsh and of course, Stevie Winwood.

Weller’s version emphasises the jazzier elements of the song to great effect, and Walsh’s distinctively careworn vocals illuminate a song that reflects the road he too travelled.

And further into the gig, Walsh and Winwood (understandably) continue to tune into Capaldi’s songwriting wavelength.  Winwood gets the funk out of the humorous ‘Light Up Or Leave Me Alone’ and Walsh, as always, examines the music’s soulful side on an earnest rendering of the folk/rock song ‘John Barleycorn Must Die’.

They are not alone of course, and there isn’t a dud contribution on this double album. Capaldi is a musician whose life is truly worth celebrating in song, and that’s reflected here, big time.

An artist’s life and career can never truly be condensed and distilled into 100+ minutes, but this is probably as close as it gets.

It helps, at least in some small way that the Hi-resolution video and the the surround sound mix is good, way beyond the threshold of acceptability, providing the clarity and punch you get on only the up market gigs. As it should be. ****

Gig review: THEA GILMORE – Nantwich Civic Hall, 17 April 2025

THEA GILMORE - Nantwich Civic Hall, 17 April 2025

The queue to get in to Nantwich Civic Hall began forming a whole hour before the doors were due to open for Thea Gilmore’s home-town gig – testament to the high esteem in which she’s held.

This is what you would call a “Brucie Bonus” gig following her sold-out UK tour and was part of the annual Nantwich Jazz, Blues and Music Festival. Thea almost always plays Nantwich – the Cheshire town she has called home for twenty six years – and the people love her for it.

There was barely a seat to be had as support Martin Reynolds came onstage.

Apparently a drummer initially, he chose to abandon the kit in favour of an acoustic (couldn’t see Ginger Baker doing that) and performed admirably, the highlight of his set being an excellent cover of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Dead Flowers’. There’s always a but and this but is that some of his own songs were a little repetitive and he could do with a little in-between-song banter.

The other but is that he’s young – and supporting an artist as good as Thea Gilmore will have been a great learning experience in how to do it.

THEA GILMORE - Nantwich Civic Hall, 17 April 2025

Thea’s entrance was a bit like ‘Casey’s Court’ as she came onstage unannounced, with the house lights still on and loud music playing through the PA – and probably couldn’t hear the roar that greeted her appearance. Amateur hour on the part of the venue.

No matter, as what followed was a consummate performance from an artist who, to these ears and I suspect those of most of the crowd, sounds like she’s at the top of her game both performance-wise and creatively.

Having said all that, opener ‘Girl Mercury’ seemed an odd choice as Thea went full ‘Ed Sheeran’ on our asses with looping vocals and effects and I could see a few people looking at each other in confusion. I know, from having seen Thea Gilmore many times, that she does employ this technique during her sets, it just seemed a little strange to begin the gig looping and with a somewhat obscure track from a limited edition EP.

THEA GILMORE - Nantwich Civic Hall, 17 April 2025

Swapping to acoustic guitar (yay!) she then introduced her son Egan on violin to accompany two tracks from the ‘Small World Turning’ album – ‘Glory’, a classic Thea song if ever there was one, and a song she wrote for Egan when he started senior school ‘Don’t Dim Your Light For Anyone’.

He hasn’t, and Thea must be very proud of the man, and musician, he’s becoming.

The highlights started coming thick and fast, including two songs from her latest album ‘These Quiet Friends’ – Echo And The Bunnymen’s ‘The Killing Moon’ and a superb ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’ featuring some exquisite violin from Egan.

The looping returned for ‘This Girl Is Taking Bets / Nice Normal Woman’ juxtaposing a song she wrote at 21 with one written in her forties – this time entirely apposite.

THEA GILMORE - Nantwich Civic Hall, 17 April 2025

There were exquisite versions of ‘Rise’ and ‘She Speaks In Colours’ before a trio of jaw-dropping renditions of ‘Liejacker’s ‘The Lower Road’, ‘The Bright Service’ from her self-titled album and, best of all, the a cappella ‘Josephine Knots’ during which a pin dropping would have sounded like a jackhammer.

For an encore, the lilting ‘I Lift My Lamp’ sent the emotionally drained audience back onto the streets of Nantwich, knowing that, once again, they had been superbly entertained by an artist who is criminally ignored by the music ‘biz’ but, for those in the know, we know.

If she’s ever playing near you, don’t pass up the opportunity to see her – artists like Thea Gilmore are to be treasured.

Album review: ERJA LYYTINEN – Smell The Roses

Pete Feenstra chatted to Erja for his show on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio playing tracks from the new album.  First broadcast 4 May 2025.

Erja Lyytinen - Smell The Roses

Tuohi [Release date 28.03.25]

‘Smell The Roses’ is a refreshingly groundbreaking rock album that burst with vitality, imagination and incendiary playing.

Everything about the album from the art work to the big organic band sound aims to make a splash.

It’s an album that celebrates and updates the nascent classic rock years, with booming arrangements, strong choruses and a huge sonic quality.

And yet, in moving in a heavier direction Erja never loses sight of her songcraft, as she helps restore the innovative side of rock to the forefront of contemporary music.

‘Smell The Roses’ is full of intensity, bristling interplay, stellar solos and a ‘can do’ attitude which translates into taking a chance and seeing where it takes you.

That’s not to Erja’ production is anything less that pristine. She self evidently has the vision, planning ability and chops to put her previous experience to good use.

No more so, than on her judicious use of her own imperious guitar solos which give her songs dynamism and spark.

What makes ‘Smell The Roses’ arguably her best album so far, is the fact she pushes herself to the limit both vocally and as a guitarist on material that breaks new ground for her.

The title track serves as the perfect intro to a full blown rock album, crafted with a sense of urgency, dirty guitar tones, a tic-toc snare, a keen sense of dynamics and an ethereal chorus with a lyrical punch.

And right at the heart of this sonic storm is Lytinnen’s triumphant vocal, arguably the best of her career.

‘Smell The Roses’ is a return to the basics of rock in which a hard driving band makes music with enough imagination and intensity to capture the flavour of some very personal lyrics.

There’s plenty of steely riffing, including the proggy tempo shift on the hard rocking ‘Going To Hell’, which works its way to a breathtaking unison guitar solo.

Then there’s the heavier stop-start of ‘Abyss’, full of a booming bass lines and organ pulses, on a lyrically dark song in which 2 huge contrasting solos gloriously stretch the number to over 7 minutes.

The riff-heavy finale features a John Bonham drum sound with cymbal crashes and her final ripping solo reminds us of what rock used to be about.

There’s a similar intensity to the slide and Hammond-led,  balls out rocker called’ The Ring’, on which she swaps the clichéd boxing metaphor for wrestling.

Having focused on the heavier rock spectrum, this is not an album that complacently sits in one musical pocket.

Listen for example, to the uplifting ‘Wish To Fly’, with its impressive mix of sludgy riffs, poppy high register vocals and a mid-number unison guitar break.

She revert to wild slide guitar on the staccato, fuzz-heavy ‘Ball And Chain’ and saves her best for the last 2 tracks, of which the swampy, slide-led ‘Stoney Creek’ evokes an early 70’s John Fogerty groove.

The song’s eerie autumn imagery also suggests there more to the story than meets the eye.

This is the track on which she hangs back a little to her tone’s rise and float before levering herself into the best chorus of the album.

There’s much to be said for ‘light and shade’, and it’s a lesson obviously well learned, as evidenced by the perfect atmospheric bookend of ‘Empty Hours’.

‘Empty Hours’ represents the quiet after the storm, with a beguiling sensual mix of slide guitar, echo and deliberately enunciated lascivious lyrics.

What better way to end to an excellent album ****½

Album review : RUSS BALLARD – Songs From The Warehouse / The Hits Rewired (2CDs)

Frontiers Music [Release date : 25.04.25]

Disc One: Songs From The Warehouse

Russ Ballard’s been round the block a good few times, most famously writing mega-hits for other artists en route, like Kiss, Santana, Rainbow and America. Well in his seventies now, on “Warehouse”, an album of new songs, it’s clear that the fire still burns. He sounds re-energised and indeed re-inspired.

Bass and drums generate a steady flow of ideas and punctuations underneath the skyscraping intensities of ‘Couragous’ and ‘Resurrection’, epic songs about romance and romantic turmoil.

Ballard’s voice quickly gains traction on the upper slopes of the vocal melodies, slip sliding toward the edge but never going over. Daringly brilliant. Graham Bonnet will have this in his basket before you can say Amazon.

As you would expect from this multi talented man, all the instruments and songwriting elements are smartly woven together in the construction of a more than interesting Rock album, with a rigorous sense of detail and depth.

Lyrically, the songs’ subjects range from the intimate to the global. This is Ballard sifting through his experiences in life, finding purpose, finding meaning and recognising the fate to which he is destined.

‘Journey Man’ : “the world keeps turning, and I keep learning. Just like you, I’m a journey man, coming closer to home”.

His arrangement on the confessional, ‘Charlatan’ – acoustic guitar and church organ – nails the lyrics’ melancholy undertow. A painted picture. A still life of broken hopes and dreams.

Elsewhere, the essence of the soulful ‘Soul Music’ is captured by Ballard’s keening vocal, as he goes for the slow burn on an incandescent slice of gospel-soul.

Similarly with ‘Breathes’, his interesting rhythms and lyrics are laced together behind this pained, heavily vocalised, slightly off centre rock song.

He kicks up a gear on ‘The Wild’, a no punches pulled reveal of the big city’s seedy underbelly; and ‘Last Man Standing’, a barely diluted hard rock song, another for Bonnet to add to his wish list.

As a showcase for an already established artist, this living, breathing collection of songs is an object lesson in how to do it, and do it right.

*****

Disc Two: The Hits Rewired

Ballard’s version of 13 of his songs, successfully covered by other artists down through the years.

They are all here, ‘New York Groove’, most notably a hit for the less notable Kiss man, Ace Frehley. Showing us all you can still write hit songs with a Bo Diddley beat.

‘God Gave Rock’n’Roll To You’ is here…’ covered by Petra and Kiss, originally written for his band, Argent. This is a truly majestic version, mainlining on class.

Ballard’s versions of Rainbow’s highest charting UK singles ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ and ‘I Surrender’ are also here. You might think no one can deliver like Bonnet, these versions might surprise you.

And several songs not generally referred to as “rock songs”.  ‘You Win Again’ – a no.1 UK single in 1977 (produced by Mickie Most) for Hot Chocolate.   ‘No More The Fool’ – a no.5 UK hit for Elkie Brooks.  ‘Free Me’ – A UK Top 40 hit for Roger Daltrey from his 1980 movie, “McVicar”.

No question, this is an illuminating double disc set. ****

Album review: PYLON POETS – Demise Of The Divine

Demise of the Divine2

Website [Release date 06.06.25]

Pylon Poets are an alt rock trio from Torquay featuring Dan Hughes (vocals, guitars, synths), Sam McIver (drums, backing vocals) and Nathan Hughes (bass, backing vocals).

Their previous releases, including an EP and seasonal themed single, have all shown that Pylon Poets have that certain ‘something’ needed to succeed in the crowded music scene. However, it is a big ask to step up to a full album and happy to report that the Pylon Poets have done so with ease.

Highlights come thick and fast including the ultra-catchy ‘Supernova’, the stripped back ‘Rebirth’ (and the most recent single, released appropriately on Good Friday) and the Depeche Mode approved ‘Metempsychosis’.  I had to look up the last song title’s meaning, “the soul is immortal and passes through cycles of incarnation in birth and release from the body at death.” That is one of the strengths of the album in that the band can take on seemingly highbrow lyrical concepts, yet they meld them into very accessible synth/guitar led songs.

‘Savior’ adds some rock heft to the proceedings, along with a touch of pomp and bombast in the music. Hints of Those Damn Crows in this song. Two other songs worthy of mentioning are ‘Temptation’ which includes a rather tasty guitar solo, and ‘Echoes of Desire’ quite possibly their finest tune to date in this reviewer’s humble opinion.

An assured and enjoyable debut from Pylon Poets that will appeal to fans of Depeche Mode and Muse. Great new music is out there and worth seeking down like this rather fine album from Pylon Poets. ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

Dan, Sam and Nathan answer Jason’s questions about the band, album and plans …

How did the Pylon Poets form and how would you describe the band’s sound to a new listener?

We formed this band after a name change from our previous outing as we felt that our new name gave us more freedom musically and is also unique which helps!

We are an alternative rock band that questions the norm and has a nostalgic edge, riffs, synths, and sing a long choruses!

How did the band set about recording ‘Demise Of The Divine’? Is it different setting out to record a full album as opposed to say a single or EP?

The album itself wasn’t necessarily the aim, we hadn’t released anything since the single release of ‘In the End’ in 2023 and when we entered the studio at Mill Farm Music we were aiming on releasing singles just to get ourselves back in front of people.

It was only after our first stint that we realised that ‘In the End’ worked really well alongside the newly written and recorded tracks, and the more we wrote the more they all seemed to gel nicely together. After the first 5 tracks were done the album pretty much seemed to write itself!

With recording an album it definitely feels like you can express yourself more as you can follow different avenues rather than aiming for every track being a big hitter with an EP.

What sort of set have you planned for the album launch gig in Torquay on June 6?

We will be playing the new album start to finish and we will also be throwing in some tracks from our back catalogue as well as some reworked versions of early material.

What have been the live highlights to date and why?

The biggest highlight since we have recorded the album has definitely been the reaction to the songs that haven’t been released yet! The fact that people have enjoyed them live before hearing the recording is a special feeling.

Is the live scene still thriving for bands like yourselves trying to gain a following? Have you noticed any decline in the number of gigs and audiences, or is it (hopefully!) the opposite?

The live scene is still surviving and we’re always grateful for any opportunity to perform our music. The number of gigs has definitely changed due to the unfortunate closure of venues, and everyone is going for the same opportunities so we have to be patient and make sure we perform to our best every time!

If the Pylon Poets could go out and support any band/artist, who would it be and why?

If we could choose it would probably be our own personal favourites so that we could watch their show every night whilst also trying to win over a new crowd! Most likely Muse, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand/Iron Maiden!

What have the band planned for the rest of the year?

We have some exciting festival appearances booked in! We are headlining ‘The Juglans Stage’ at Home Farm Festival in Somerset the day after the album release, we then have Deva Fest, Exe Rocks and we’re awaiting final confirmation on another!

We’ll also be hitting some major cities for some one off gigs in London, Glasgow and more to be confirmed!

Album review: ALLY VENABLE – Money & Power

ALLY VENABLE - Money & Power

Ruf Records [Release date 18.04.25]

In our reviews of Ally Venable’s previous albums ‘Texas Honey’, ‘Heart Of Fire’ and ‘Real Gone’ we noted that she was not quite the fully formed offering but was getting there. ‘Money & Power’ is a further step in the right direction although Ally is maybe torn between the Texan southern blues that she was brought up with and a more rocky approach to further tease the mainstream.

Interestingly the first two advance tracks released from the album – ‘Do You Cry’ and ‘Keep In Mind’ – were ballads/mid-tempo and if nothing else these tunes show that she is maturing as a performer and not least evidenced in the somewhat more sophisticated publicity shots.  Perhaps the most noticeable aspect is the improved vocals.

Her contemporaries like Joanne Shaw Taylor and Erja Lyytinen have increasingly followed a more crossover route and Ally is not quite there yet. Perhaps she doesn’t want to be?

This means that she is now torn between satisfying an older audience with a penchant for the blues and pulling in younger blood and I don’t think this will happen with the latest release – good as it is.

The issue is that many of the tunes are fairly average and at times beat a well-trodden path followed by predecessors such as Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow. Guest appearances from Shemekia Copeland and Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram bolster the blues/rock credentials.

Of the more upbeat, album opener ‘Brown Liquor’ is again fairly perfunctory as these things go with only the Kossoff-esque guitar marking it out from the masses.

The standout title track has a Bad Company ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’ groove and wah-wah infected solo whilst ‘Heal Me’ is more of the same.

‘Stopper Back Papa’ has a funky undertow with some welcome vamping in the playout.

‘Legends’ is a straightforward slice of pop rock whilst Copeland adds heft to ‘Unbreakable.’

I pondered when reviewing ‘Real Gone’ whether a song like ‘Gone So Long’ gave a possible direction of travel. But frankly there is nothing here to match that.

Ally has been touring in the U.S. with “Experience Hendrix”. We last saw her in the UK as part of the Blues Caravan troupe for label Ruf Records. Thankfully she’s back for more dates in October. ***1/2

Album review : HAREM SCAREM – Chasing Euphoria

Frontiers [Release date : 25.04.25]

Melodic Hard Rock heroes, Harem Scarem are back with their 16th album.

Harry Hess and Pete Lesperance still form the core of the band, with Creighton Doane and Mike Vassos providing a rock solid rhythm section.

Echoes of Mood Swings can be heard, not loud but clear, on opening and title track, ‘Chasing Euphoria’, and on first teaser track, ‘Better The Devil You Know’.

First album for five years. And we’re cranking the machine way back… if we listen hard enough, we will always hear those echoes, no matter the album. And they’ll always be welcome.

Some elements of the band’s current music can be challenging. Harry Hess’s voice has been roughed up and toughened in the post debut grind of continual live performance. Safe to say though, his power and range has never dimmed. And ornamented still by Pete Lesperance’s axework, which has apparently traded abandon for control.

No bad thing, just listen to satisfying arpeggios that open ‘Slow Burn’s carefully rationed riffs and transitions, all the time shadowing Hess’s rushing vocals. A guitarist with the technique, the tone and the sheer invention of a world class axeman, spinning a guitar solo into a perfectly calibrated measure of melodic music.

The layers of heaviosity they added to mid career albums have been removed. That doesn’t mean that Chasing Euphoria is in anyway lightweight. Lesperance hits a ringing guitar groove on ‘A Falling Knife’ and ‘Keep Your Head Up’, songs that allow backing singer, Darren Smith, a couple of moments in the frontman spotlight.

The album peaks with ‘World On Fire’ and ‘Reliving History’, both bringing together all the bands classic rock strengths on a pulsing mix of epic, rhythmic, melodic hard rock.

Unlike the recordings of other bands who are still around now, there’s nothing esoteric about Harems Scarem’s new music, it’s just a pleasurable celebration of all that’s great about melodic rock, coupled to a relentless drive to make it work. ****

Book review: On track…ANTHONY PHILLIPS 1977-1990 by Alan Draper

Anthony Phillips chatted to David Randall about his career in March 2015.  First broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio where he is a Featured Artist.

On track...ANTHONY PHILLIPS 1977-1990 by Alan Draper

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 25.04.25]

When this new “On track…” tome landed at GRTR! Towers I tried to remember why I got heavily into Anthony Phillips’ music in the late 1980′s when I started to collect the vinyl, much of which was only available via import. I was never a big Genesis fan but I did find something intriguing in their original guitarist’s output.

Phillips has always remained something of an enigma, bailing out of Genesis on the cusp of wider success, suffering from stage fright, and then pursuing a more academic journey (brushing up his guitar and keyboard skills) before the release in 1977 of his debut solo album.

His solo work is prodigious and there’s a lot more stuff after Draper’s cut-off point, suggesting there may be a volume 2.

Whilst the author captures the appeal of Ant’s music (fragile, eccentric, witty, pastoral and so on) he also documents the various reissues. Aside from that hard to find vinyl, fans would be dismayed that there have been several attempts at repackaging his albums.

It has been left to Esoteric to come up with the “definitive” editions of the main studio albums (expanding them to 3 or 4 CD sets in 2015/16) whilst also reissuing the concurrent “Private Parts And Pieces” series along with the two volume “Archive Collection” (see links below for our earlier reviews).

Genesis fans, especially those who like the pre-Hackett version, will find much of interest and various connections in Phillips’ solo work. The debut, for example, ‘The Geese And The Ghost’ included assistance from longer-term writing partner Mike Rutherford (who also shared his love of 12-string guitar) and Phil Collins.

Draper chronicles the ups and downs of Phillips solo journey, as he made a handful of arguably more commercial releases (signed briefly to Arista and then RCA) and ultimately picked up by Virgin who, yes, did more reissuing. During this period Phillips also contributed to Rutherford’s first solo album (1980) and Camel’s album ‘The Single Factor’ in 1982.

Phillips remains active and in the years following 1990 continued to release albums of library music (TV and film soundtracks), whilst including a continuation of “Private Parts…” and various collaborations.

Strangely, perhaps, there is no cross-referencing to Sonicbond’s “Genesis in the 1970′s” book which also details Ant’s solo work and includes interview material with the man himself.

This aspect is a “missing link” in Draper’s account which is otherwise a very welcome summary for the curious and the committed alike. It had this fan digging out the vinyl, which is exactly as it should be.  Roll on that second volume. ****

Album review : SICK’N'BEAUTIFUL – Horror Vacui

BLKIIBLK/Frontiers [Release date 18.04.25]

Sick’n’Beautiful’s fourth album and their first release on Frontiers’ debut “heavy music imprint”, BLKIIBLK.

Horror Vacui is an artistic concept, roughly translated from Latin as fear of empty spaces.

Fronted by the sexually alluring Herma Sick (Greta Di Lacovo), S’n’B present a visual image that’s one part Lordi, one part Rammstein, and one part Gal Gadot.

Funnily enough, opening track, ‘Human’, is one part Lordi, one part Rammstein, and… well, we don’t know what Gal Gadot sounds like (but Herma sounds great).

The album is filled to the brim with sawing riffs, bass bending notes and detonating drumbeats, all providing a solid foundation, underpinning Herma’s serrated vocals.

But it’s not all about the beat. These songs aren’t short on melody and hooks, and that opener is a genuine scene setter. An all of the above (plus a slice of Nine Inch Nails) sensory assault, squeezing out well crafted choruses that may not comply with the industry standard, but hit the spot just the same.

The Alice Cooper influenced ‘My Wounds’, ‘Hate Manifesto’ and ‘Raise The Dragon’ all crackle with kinetic energy, and are delivered in a swirl of pounding, combative heavy metal, but hold a tune nevertheless.

Elsewhere, the songs are smart, tightly woven, dynamic.

Like ‘Death Police’, which sounds like its title, where Herma swaps vocal lines with grimy, growling, transgressive “voices off”.

It’s one of several carefully choreographed heavy metal battles, flaring up like a torch on each line of Herma’s dialogue with the unseen. This is the album’s key track.

Her laminated vocals swell ‘Septem Malificas’ seemingly from the inside out. The song always seems on the point of igniting. It may be a reference to the movie short, ‘Septem’ which examines the Devil’s role in the start of every sin. Maybe not, but it would fit the overall musical theme of Horror Vacui.

Like a few others, the insidious ‘Haunted’ and ‘The Rat King’ slip way over the line into Symphonic Metal territory. An indication perhaps as to where the band’s journey began.
Long may that journey continue. ***1/2

Gig review: MATT PEARCE AND THE MUTINY /JACK J HUTCHINSON – The Grace, London, 12 April 2025

MATT PEARCE AND THE MUTINY - The Grace, London, 12 April 2025

There are so many musicians out there who are not household names, but significantly talented and with a love of their trade and a desire to bring their music to the people. Two who impressed me in the last year or two and made me curious to explore further were Jack J Hutchinson and Matt Pearce.  So it was great news for me that the two announced an extensive co-headlining tour billed as ‘a double shot of Jack’n’Matt’. Despite the fact they had already played a couple of gigs in the Home Counties, there was a decent turnout for the London show at The Grace.

Jack J Hutchinson went first, leading a power trio: in his fedora hat and beard he looks like a southern bluesman, yet despite coming to prominence through the blues rock route he is just as much a singer songwriter, a fact proven by most recent album ‘Battles’. It was well represented with the big riff of opener ‘Don’t let the F***ers Get You Down’, ‘Constellation’, ‘Days Are Gone’ which he admitted was his favourite and had an excellent hook, and ‘Running On Empty’.

JACK J HUTCHINSON - The Grace, London, 12 April 2025

To that point he had been solid rather than spectacular but the gig really picked up momentum with ‘Road To Hell’, with a menacing Bad Company vibe and the first of a number of extended solos where he posed on the edge of the stage, and ‘Love Is the Law’ with the band going into something of a jam.

Unusually perhaps in this genre he is also a confirmed fan of nineties Britpop and after admitting that the title of the latter was lifted from John Squire, played a respectable cover of Paul Weller’s ‘Out of the Sinking’ (which I always associate with Sky Sports Super Sunday back in the day!) where the rhythm section of Phil Wilson and Greg Smith excelled.

JACK J HUTCHINSON - The Grace, London, 12 April 2025

Going back to a pair from his debut ‘Paint No Fiction’ album from some years back, ‘Deal With the Devil’ had a heavier, darker riff, and ‘Hip Slicker’ was more commercial with a slight southern rock feel. The highlight of the set though was surely ‘I Will Follow You’, a ballad written in honour of his Dad which then built into an epic solo and considering the size of the crowd an impressively loud audience call and response.

Unfortunately the 10pm curfew meant he had to chop the odd song but ‘Overdrive’ and ‘Call Of the Wild’, with an excellent melodic hook ended a highly impressive set, evidence that he is both a fine musician and a very engaging character with a nice line in self-deprecating storytelling.

JACK J HUTCHINSON - The Grace, London, 12 April 2025

After a very short changeover the cramped stage which had comfortably coped with Jack’s power trio was altogether more crowded for Matt Pearce and the Mutiny as the dapper, trilby-sporting singer and guitarist led a six-piece band. Opener ‘Got a Thing Going On’ was a rush of riotous R’n’B energy with the sound of Peter Back’s saxophone dominant even though he was confined to near darkness on the edge of the stage.

‘Never Get Away From Love’ had a strong funk undertow, and ‘All the Gods’ a little bluesier. However, as with Jack, the band really got into their stride a few songs in as ‘Promised Land’ featured some great musicianship, culminating in a jam between Matt’s classic Les Paul and Chris Burgham on keys.

MATT PEARCE AND THE MUTINY - The Grace, London, 12 April 2025

What makes The Mutiny particularly interesting is the way they blend a number of classic musical influences into a unique melting pot. So ‘Bring It All To Me’ was the soul ballad with the harmony vocals of Matt and Daliah Sherrington creating a rich sound, while ‘Ordinary Blues’ was anything but, instead a superlative jam reminding me of  Glenn Hughes at his funkiest. ‘From Here To the Moon’ was a little rockier with an impressive closing section as Matt’s slide playing competed with Pete’s sax.

‘A Better Way’ saw more of those funky grooves, while ‘King Of the World’ rocked a bit harder and was a reminder that as a lead guitarist Matt has a pedigree in Voodoo Six and a host of other names. The mood was increasingly loose both on stage and in the crowd so it was time for a well-chosen cover in ‘Drift Away’ which had people swaying.

MATT PEARCE AND THE MUTINY - The Grace, London, 12 April 2025

‘Scarecrowing’ was a full-blown rock out and after band intros segued seamlessly into a cover of ‘Oh Well’. Sadly, the curfew necessitated a premature end to a set of a shade over an hour which was unfortunate as a real groove had been developing, and you could feel in the air the way the band and the audience relaxed and fed off each other’s energy.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable night proving that the club shows are so much more intimate and rewarding than larger gigs. I can fully recommend you catch either or both of these fine gentlemen, their excellent bands and original sounds if you can.

Album review : LAURENNE / LOUHIMO – Falling Through Stars

Frontiers Music [Release date : 18.04.25]

We reviewed Laurenne / Louhimo’s “the lockdown made me do it” debut album in 2021 (obviously).

For the uninitiated, L/L is a musical marriage of Smackbound’s Netta Laurenne and Battle Beast’s Noora Louhimo.

Netta’s husband and Thunderstone supremo, Nino, is again at the production helm, for the duo’s second opus, Falling Through Stars.

Given the vocalists’ day jobs, we expect an album of heavy metal thunder, with the occasional high frequency lightning strike.
But, what is this? …melodic metal, power metal, symphonic metal, melodic hard rock? All of the above? Whatever it is, it’s impossible to ignore … some albums get you immediately and vice versa. Others take time.

The two leading protagonists spark off each other, often igniting an explosive chorus, but just as often, they guide us through powerful, melodically inclined rock songs, like ‘Rotten Gold’ and ‘Falling Through Stars’.

In other places the music is intense, darker, wrapped in barbed wire, with songs – most notably ‘The Cradle’ – always nailed solidly to the framework of a sturdy melody.

‘Damned’ and ‘All For Sale’ are agile, sinewy songs with a rock’n’roll pulse, recalling the full and focused hard rock of female vocalist led bands like Heart and Pat Benatar.

Elsewhere, lyrically complex at times, uncomplicated at others, a scattering of aurally adhesive tunes with matching lyrics will catch your attention. ‘To The Dark’ has some great lines “Get out of my head, get out of my bed”. A world class put-down.
Then, ‘Loud and Clear’- the album’s big, booming, heartfelt ballad – flips the coin: “Although I know how much you hurt me, how on earth could I desert you”. A teary eyed leap of faith.

It’s clear from this follow up, that the duo (plus Nino) have really sharpened their songcraft since the debut. There’s an exhilarating seam of musical creativity running through this new material, freshening up familiar elements in a way that’s hard to resist.
Call it a post pandemic bonus. ****

Gig review: SWEET – Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

SWEET - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

Sweet’s late career resurgence is a heartening one. With Andy Scott the sole survivor of their classic line up, their support slot to his hero Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow at Stone Free festival in 2017 seemed to mark a turning point. Since then they have pivoted away from the seventies nostalgia bills on the ‘chicken in a basket’ circuit and regularly performed their own tours, re-establishing their rock credibility, aided by a number of shrewd line up changes.

However Andy has faced more existential challenges such as an ongoing battle with prostate cancer, and more recently a back injury which caused him to miss several shows. Fortunately he was present for what must have been their largest London headline show since the early eighties, if not longer, with all but the top balcony filled in the Shepherds Bush Empire, where as he reminded us Sweet also performed on ‘Crackerjack’ back in the day!

T REXTASY - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

There was a risk that having T Rextasy as support would be a step back to that glam rock nostalgia, but actually they proved an inspired choice. Many of us are rather sniffy about tribute bands, but you would need to be well into your sixties to have seen Marc Bolan himself, and for well over 30 years ‘Danielz’ has faithfully and lovingly recreated his sound and look to be one of the most enduringly successful tribute acts on the circuit.

He came on stage in the feather boa, spangly jacket, bold primary colours and frizzy hair of the master, though the thought occurred that it must get ever harder to carry off that youthful  Bolan image that is preserved in aspic. A line up completed by a low key but very solid trio of musicians opened with ‘New York City’, and massive hits such as ‘Telegram Sam’ – where I could not resist singing along to the ‘I ain’t no square with my corkscrew hair’ lyric, ‘Metal Guru’ and ‘Children of the Revolution’ were brilliantly delivered, in a slightly rockier fashion than the originals.

T REXTASY - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

Without resorting to gimmick or mimickry, Danielz did tell a few short stories about the genesis of some of the songs that enriched the occasion, such as that The Ramones were fans of ‘Solid Gold Easy Action’, which was easy to see with its proto-punk sound.

Of necessity in a support slot, ‘Zip Gun Boogie’ was the closest to an obscurity, but the last 25 minutes was one instantly catchy hit after another including ‘Jeepster’, ‘20th Century Boy’ with that killer riff and ‘I Love To Boogie’ which had the crowd doing just that, before the inevitable closers of  ‘Get It On (Bang a Gong)’ and ‘Hot Love’ with a joyous singalong to the ‘na na nas’. It was an excellent set which had me wondering why it has taken me over 30 years to see them live.

SWEET - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

After a very short turnover, Sweet arrived with a newer and younger drummer since I last saw them in Adam Booth, but also a sixth member, standing behind his bandmates, in Andy’s recent deputy, Jim Kirkpatrick, a man well known to me as post-reunion FM’s guitarist. Fortunately the man himself was still very much there resplendent in a red military style jacket and with trademark silver mane, though just to add to the confusion the closing solo on ‘Action’ was played by the second guitarist Tom Cory. Another glam classic followed in ‘Hellraiser’, Andy delivering the mama you don’t understand’ lines, and it was immediately apparent that Paul Manzi, with his commanding stage manner and ability to hit the notes effortlessly, has been an inspired recruit.

SWEET - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

However most of the first half of the set was a step away from those early seventies glam hits, no bad thing in my book. We even got a pair of new songs from recent album ‘Full Circle’ in ‘Circus’ and the particularly impressive ‘Don’t Bring Me Water’ with Paul’s bluesy roar like the young David Coverdale, either side of one of my all-time Sweet favourites in the story song of ‘The Six Teens’. In the hands of this line up it seemed even better than usual, in particular the high pitched lines before the chorus about making it brilliantly delivered by bassist Lee Small, unrecognisable from last time with his long hair.

But even better was to follow with a trio that were the highlight of this, or indeed virtually any other, night. I don’t think I’d ever heard them play ‘Lost Angels’ before but the lush arrangements, big harmonies and guitars were perfectly executed and a reminder that in that more mature phase Sweet were more than a match for the likes of 10cc, Wings and, yes, Queen. Andy’s unmistakable ‘Woman From Tokyo’-inspired riff then heralded a full-length jam to ‘Windy City’ and ‘Set Me Free’ riffed like a demon and he performed his party piece, playing the solo using a tin can as a slide.

SWEE - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

At that point he took a well-deserved mid-set break but the band continued with a medley of their first three big hits in the calypso-inspired pair of ‘Co-Co’ and ‘Poppa Joe’ either side of ‘Funny Funny’. I’ve never even liked any of them yet the band played well and I still found myself singing along. Thankfully ‘Burn On The Flame’ soon followed, Jim taking centre stage and jamming with Tom, while Paul was very much at home as his old band Cats in Space (themselves influenced by Sweet’s later seventies sounds) covered it in their early days.

SWEET - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

Andy returned for a storming ‘Teenage Rampage’, for me the best combination of the harder sound they hankered after and the Chinn/Chapman approach, talking of which, the over the top kitsch of a medley of ‘Wig Wam Bam’ and ‘Little Willy’ was great fun. In contrast ‘Love Is Like Oxygen’, with Tom’s keyboards prominent, showed off the band’s later songwriting maturity, and was all the better for the absence of the ‘Fanfare For The Common Man’ insert they played for so long.

Andy gave a lengthy speech in that stentorian North Wales voice, with some witty unfiltered comments, and bigging up the contributions of his band members in the manner of a proud parent, before unexpectedly an American record label executive came on to present him with a gold disc.

SWEET - Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 5 April 2025

There was just time for the classics that always seem to end a Sweet set, beginning with ‘Fox On The Run’ with some guitar harmonies before a pair of encores. Paul had the crowd bouncing to the intro of ‘Blockbuster’, Andy contributing those vocal interjections, before a riotous ‘Ballroom Blitz’, again benefiting from Lee’s ability to reach those highest notes.

It was an emotional occasion for those who feared we might not see Andy Scott again on a London stage. With a perfect sound and even more impressive band and wide-ranging setlist, it was a contender not only for the best Sweet show I’ve seen, but for my gig of the year so far. Andy’s health permitting, long may their unlikely renaissance continue.

Book review: Richard Houghton – LED ZEPPELIN – Whole Lotta Love – A People’s History

Richard Haughton - Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love - A People's History

Spenwood Books [Publication Date: 01.12.24]

We’ve all heard or read about the history of one of the greatest rock bands to bestride the world through film, television and a number of mighty tomes over the years.

From “Hammer Of The Gods” to “The Song Remains The Same” we’ve been regaled by tales of amazing gigs, shocking revelations, drunkenness and revelry on an epic scale.

But these tales have always been produced by film-makers and journalists – this particular mighty tome is, as the name suggests, a collection of stories from the fans, the people who actually paid to see them from their very beginnings as solo artists in 1965, to their first gig as Led Zeppelin at the University Of Surrey in 1968 to their one-off reunion at the O2 Arena in 2007.

Richard Houghton, (author of many musical books including the likes of Jethro Tull, Simple Minds, OMD, etc.) with the assistance of Dave Lewis (a world-renowned chronicler of all things Zeppelin) has done a splendid job in assembling a redoubtable collection of every gig the band ever played during their twelve year career and the reminiscences of those who were there.

Of course, the first thing everyone will do (as I duly did) is leaf through the chronological pages to find the gigs you went to yourself – in my case both Liverpool University Mountford Hall (where we all sat cross-legged on the floor (!) and Liverpool Stadium in 1971 and the Empire Theatre, also in Liverpool, in 1973.

Sure enough, all three gigs were there and the fan’s accounts pretty much tallied in with my experience – especially at the Empire Theatre where the bouncers were particularly aggressive towards anyone either taking pictures or standing up. Of course they were knocked aside when we all ‘rushed’ the stage at the end.

There are over 750 accounts of fans’ experiences and what strikes you is just how much time Led Zep spent in America – sure there were European tours, and loads of gigs in the UK but America had the lion’s share – no doubt as a result of Peter Grant’s ‘moneyball’ management.

If there is a downside, it is that it can get a bit repetitive. After all we all pretty much had the same experience, give or take – queueing for tickets, the excitement of seeing what would eventually become the biggest band in the world, the “bacon and eggs” in your ears for days afterwards, and, of course, the absolute privilege of being blown away by four musicians at the top of their game.

However, there is sufficient variety in the stories to encourage repeat visits to its 368 pages and, for anyone who saw them, rekindled memories of seeing, live, a band that have passed into legend.    ****

Album review: ROBIN TROWER – Come And Find Me

Robin Trower - Come & Find Me

Provogue [Release date: 16.05.25]

‘Come And Find Me’ the album title of Robin Trower’s 28th solo album has an almost challenging tone to it.

It suggests an uncompromising master guitarist and song craftsmen who is very well aware of his enduring niche.

And over the course of 11 tracks he quickly reaffirms his high standing as he uncorks deep  grooves and fills them with meaningful narratives, sonic mastery and cosmic vibrations.

Trower is an artist who has little to prove, except perhaps to share the enjoyment of still reaching the kind of high standards that many would still love to emulate.

It’s an album that’s interwoven with the kind of spiritual exploration a Zen master might relate to, by simply being in moment rather than worrying about extraneous circumstances.

And while Trower’s commercial imperative may have long gone, his commitment to his craft remains steadfast, meaning his consistent approach still draws existing fans to his unique approach and sound.

If there is the slightest suggestion of adhering to any semblance of the formulaic, it’s possibly the inclusion of the evocative husky vocal style of Richard Watts, who offers a distance reminder of James Dewar and a huskier version of the soulful Davey Pattison.

Not only do the vocal parts feel strangely familiar, but the band’s respective roles adhere to an enduring template in which Trower creates enveloping tone drenched soundscapes, while the respective vocalist delivers the narrative.

Trower has also explained that this album represents; a snapshot of his situation and world view at that moment.” And in that sense his guitar playing might also be compared to a painter whose different brushtroke applications gives a nascent piece of work its depth.

You could argue he often obfuscates clarity in a mix of lyrical eclectcism and an aching tone, though most long term fans will happily settle for that, and here he contents himself with offering us portals of his creativity.

This is particulalry so on the opening ‘A Little Bit Of Freedom’ which is essentially a mission statement of independent defiance: I don’t need no one to think for me, Or telling me what’s on my mind.”

Musically it offers teasing moments of his signature sound and sculpted wah-wah.

He’s in his element on the undulating ‘One Go Around’ which is a trademark understated Trower track. He let’s his tone rise, float and hover over a cool groove, while his wah-wah inflections resemble a master chef judiciously adding just the right ingredients to a simmering pot, brought gently to the boil before a lowering of the flame.

In musical terms this is represented by a sudden deep tone fade.

Everything has it place. And having made his presence felt, he quickly moves on to other aspects of his psyche and sonic armory.

On ‘I Would Lose My Mind’ his guitar cleverly shadows Watts’s vocal lines in an interwoven conversation, completed by a carefully chosen intense guitar solo, full of long linear notes with a perfunctory ending.

The title track is closer to his ethereal 70’s sound, with the kind of meditative feel we have come to associate with his latter day work.

Listen to the outstanding ‘Take This Hurt Away’, on which a familiar big toned intro leads into a languid groove ,which it glues together an angst ridden voice and his guitar parts. The latter sit just behind the vocal line to subtle effect.

A cool drop down at the 2.00 minute mark, serves to refocus our attention on his guitar tone and reinforces the deep emotion of the song while leading back to the repeated catchy hook

There’s no excess baggage here and never a note or flurry wasted.

Trower has always sought to express emotion through the triumvirate of guitar, amp and whichever vocalist he’s working with, since seemingly abandoning the task himself.

Happily, Richard Watts husky phrasing intuitively taps into lyrical meaning and underlying feel.  This is very much so on the shimmering ‘The Future Starts Right Here’, complete with RT’s gnawing tone.

The addition of Jess Hayes on the wah-wah laden and old school R&B feel of ‘Tangled Love’ brings some unexpected vim and vigor to Trower’s extant style.

And as the album progresses, it starts to feel like pages in a diary in which the underlying chronology is interspersed with subtle diversions, of which the elegant ‘Capture The Life Begun’ is an exercise in subtle restraint.

‘Without A Trace’ is more of a brooding groove on which the music cleverly amplifies lyrical intent. And it’s that essential connection between his expressive guitar tone, subtly crafted arrangements and meaningful lyrics that serve him so well

The reflective nature of the album isn’t simply a corollary of life experience, but rather his more pressing unease at the world around him.

But there’s always hope, as evidenced by the Hendrix style intro to the intricate ‘Time Stood Still’, a defining, feel drenched love song on which Watts excels himself.

He digs deep to make an emotive connection with a song that Trower might rightly regard as one of his very best.

The slight pause at 2.05 minute mark, creates a breathless tension, which Trower resolves with the kind of aching soulful solo which lies at the heart of a deeply personal album.

Rock fans who still have the attention span to listen to an album in full will be richly rewarded. ****

Album review : ROCK-OUT Let’s Call It Rock’n’Roll

Frontiers Music [Release date : 11.04.25]

Third album from Swiss band, Rock-Out.

I know, let’s sign a band who sound a bit like AC/DC, a bit like Accept, and a lot like Krokus.

It’s a pretty limited soundscape, especially as Rock-Out have a habit of furnishing songs with lowest common denominator narratives, and rinse and repeat lyrics.

But the album gets better as we make our way through it. Its very familiarity has a surprising appeal.

Despite their overused titles, ‘Let’s Call It Rock’n’roll’ and ‘American Way’ have clearly audible traces of originality running through their veins, especially the latter, a tribute to the pioneers of Rock, neatly mixing energetic riffs with fresh faced, FM Radio hooks.

That said, most tracks are overshadowed by a couple of high voltage rock songs coming half way through the album. ‘Dynamite’ picks up on AC/DC’s talent for matching a spare, red hot riff and a galloping beat to a hard hitting melody and macho vocals. Then ’I Wanna Live Till The Day I Die’, a nicely turned chunk of barroom boogie, leans hard into singer/guitarist Florian Badertscher’s ability to create an anti authority sentiment.

His equally convincing vocal on the album’s big ballad ‘Tears Are The Rain’ (with that title it couldn’t be anything else) shows another side to his talent. The song has a simple but expressive melody, and a measured, ultra cool guitar solo. It’s cliched perhaps, but hundreds of bands have sold millions with the same approach. And there is clearly still an audience.

The album closes with ‘Don’t Call Me Honey’. It trawls every hard rock groove for signs of new life, and out pops a big, brash, swaggering rock song.

An apposite closer. ***

Album review: GIGSPANNER BIG BAND – Turnstone

gigspanner big band

Website [Release date 11.04.25]

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner Big Band is a folk supergroup, consisting of Peter Knight (violin, vocals), a fixture of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s lineup and he has collaborated with countless other luminaries of the scene, founder-member of Bellowhead John Spiers (melodeon, concertina, vocals), Sacha Trochet (percussion, bass, vocals) Roger Flack (guitar, bass, vocals) and the line-up is rounded off by the award-winning Edgelarks  duo of Phillip Henry (dobro, harmonica, banjo, vocals) and Hannah Martin (violin, vocals, banjo).

The artwork for the album by Tim Marrs is stunning, with the turnstone wading bird taking centre spot on the cover. The album was named after said bird which has a habit of skittering along the tideline, upending pebbles and routing through seaweed in search of food, with Gigspanner Big Band taking a similar approach to traditional folk songs and giving them a new Gigspanner musical spin.

With an album this good it is hard to pick out highlights, as each song has its own merits and playing on each on is top notch as you’d expect given the pedigree of the musicians involved. That said, ‘Silver Dagger’ is simply wonderful from the fiddle solo by Peter Knight through to the dobro and sublime singing by Hannah Martin. Not far behind are ‘Sovay’ and the band’s version of the popular ‘Hind Horn’.

In some ways the Gigspanner Big Band remind this listener of Sandy Denny-era Fairport Convention in the way they take traditional folk tunes and give them a rockier feel yet never losing the song’s traditional origins. ‘What Wonderous Love Is This/Sweet Highland Mary’ is a good example, with Peter Knight taking the lead vocal.

Gigspanner Big Band reach album number three and show no signs of running out of musical ideas. If you like a bit of folk rock, traditional folk and even a smidgen of progressive music, you will find much to enjoy on ‘Turnstone’.  ****
