Album review : LANDFALL – Wide Open Sky

Frontiers [Release date : 17.01.25]

Third album from Brazilian melodic hard rock band, Landfall, founded by Felipe Souzza and Marcelo Gelbcke in 2014, and fronted nowadays by noted vocalist, Gui Oliver.

It’s unquestionably an album of two halves.

The band’s melodic craftmanship shows through clearly on the first. Maybe it’s the subject matter.

Three tracks hold the key. The quasi religious ‘Tree Of Life’ and its positive, optimistic lyrics, powers its way into view as the album opens up.

There are the promised echoes of Steve Perry to Oliver’s vocals, but not so much as to distract us.

‘SOS’ is an adrenaline rush of a rock song, a prayer dressed in rock clothing. There’s a religious intensity to Oliver’s vocal delivery now, carrying a weight of emotion here without faltering for a moment.

Then on ‘When The Curtain Falls’ – musically, a callback to the eighties – they turn a poignant, life-after-death lyric into a serious piece of introspection, cynical yet hopeful.

Both spin on Gelbcke’s eloquent, and often forceful guitar figures, underpinning some sinuous melodies.

Powerful songs, album standouts.

These spiritual themes give way to the more prosaic topics of love and affection in the second half of the album.

‘Higher than the Moon’ sparkles and shines thanks to some cool axework. Oliver’s reined back vocals make a difference.

When they don’t shovel too much clutter into an arrangement (as they are inclined to do), it really pays off. Gelbcke’s neat guitar sounds combine with a sturdy piano motif to create the glue that holds the balladic ‘A Letter To You’ together, with Oliver moving – to some extent at least – into the background.

It’s another step forward for Landfall. A seasoned hand in the songwriting and a more accomplished hand in the production could move this band on by several notches. ***1/2

Album review: TIMSON AOR – Next Level

TIMSON AOR - Next Level

Website [Release date 28.02.24]

Timson AOR are back with their second album, released almost a year after their enjoyable debut ‘Forever’s Not Enough’. Timson AOR consists of Mark Timson (guitars, bass, keys, synths, drum programming) and Lukky S (vocals, lead guitar, bass, keys).

The strength of this album is very much like the debut, in that both musicians love 80s AOR/melodic rock and create songs that hark back to that era, with their own added modern touches. Take the lead single, ‘The Wind Whispers (Your Name)’, a perfect piece of catchy melodic rock, that has been done many times before, however, when you have the melody and vocals Timson AOR have you’re onto a winner. Of more recent bands Khymera are treading a similar musical path.

Prime time keyboards drenched AOR to be heard on ‘Wake the Night’, complete with a nifty guitar solo. Nothing too flashy but enough to whip out the old air guitar. Shades of this reviewer’s favourite Toto album ‘Isolation’ on ‘The Last Ride’. A song chock full of layered keys and synths, and a knockout chorus.

‘From the Ashes’ ticks the ballad box, featuring a fine vocal performance from Lukky. ‘Starlight’ is a perfect single in the waiting and another one to feature a soaring guitar solo. Quick mention of closer ‘Farewell’, a short but sweet ballad and one that uses vocal harmonies to good effect.

Timson AOR have again produced an album of enjoyable, 80s influenced AOR/melodic rock. Yes, it has been done many times before but these guys nail that classic 80s sound without sounding dated. With two fine albums under their musical belts no pressure on album number three then! ****

Album review : WILDNESS – Avenger

Frontiers [Release date : 17.01.25]

By the numbers – fourth album from Swedish Melodic hard rock band, Wildness, third with “new” vocalist, Erik Forsberg, and second on the Frontiers label.

The band was formed by drummer, Erik Modin in 2014, recruiting guitarists Adam Holmström and Pontus Sköld, and later adding bass man Marcus Sjösund to their ranks.

The band follow the instructions in their well thumbed melodic rock primer pretty closely.

Big chords, big choruses, anthemic hooks, passionate delivery. In the right hands these ingredients can result in a decent album. But there’s an uneveness to the songwriting and little variation in tempo as we move from song to song, like they haven’t noticed the lights have changed.

Lyrically too, the album is something of a disappointment. We’re not expecting Pulitzer Prize winning stuff, but ‘Wings Of Fire’, ‘Broken Heart’, ‘Stand Your Ground’ are typically unimaginative song titles.

It’s a delight to note that the title track is head and shoulders above the rest. The spiralling axe intro ignites some genuine fire at last.
In a way, it’s a fanfare, a moment of triumph, as Forsberg reaches for something heroic. It’s a big, booming melodic hard rock song, one we might have expected from present day Stryper.

The album finds further redemption in two other songs, ‘Poison Ivy’ (not that one) and ‘Eye Of The Storm’ (and not that one either).

Both have the quickening heartbeat of all great melodic rock. All the elements, wiry, hard rock guitars, radiant bursts of high impact harmonies and compelling vocals are there.

More like this the next time please. ***

Rising Stars: ANDRY (interview)

Andry Lagiou, an Athens-born vocal powerhouse, describes herself as “the missing link between Ronnie James Dio and Christina Aguilera.” A former runner-up on The Voice of Greece and the frontwoman of The Harps, she has made a significant mark on the international metal scene as ‘ANDRY’.

Last year, she released her highly anticipated debut album “Skies” through her own record label, Baby Mistress Records. The first single from the album, also titled “Skies,” is now available on all streaming platforms via The Orchard. In addition, she successfully completed a tour across Europe with the band Kings of Thrash.

We had a chat with the Blues Metal Queen herself to find out more!

What was the inspiration behind your single “Skies”? Can you share the story or emotions that fuelled this track?

The inspiration behind the song is based on pure emotions of constant abuse and the freedom that will be brought , and the truth that will shine.

Either it has to do with female abuse child abuse internal confusion or even slavery . I had in mind, basically, female abuse and financial-political deception , rich and poor and how it evolves throughout the years. Good thing with my songs is that people can interpret their own story and meaning, and relate to it. After all when you hear a story each one has a different imagery of what it is .

How did you approach writing and producing the album of the same name? Were there any unique challenges or standout moments during its creation?

During recording an album is always a big challenge cause you are never sure of what you re doing, apart from the basic stuff .I never approach I just put out songs and music that I think fits within the album. I don’t need to combine the same genre because my voice is the glue in between the songs and the correlation stays there , meaning the story is evolving naturally. The list is very important to me . I’ve had suggestions from people not to include a ballad cause it’s a heavy album , well I put two. Black Hole was the most challenging song to retain a balance between metal sound and oriental without sounding like Greek cheap music.

How do you feel your music has evolved from your previous works to “Skies”? Were there any significant changes in your style or approach?

andry and band promo

Yes of course, LOVES STRIKES DOVES is classic rock with prog elements and a hard rock feel. I decided that since there’s no genre online to describe what I do I should jump into Metal. Literally I tried to fit in .And it worked.

Is there a particular song on the “Skies” album that holds a special place in your heart? Why?

Olive Tree . Very poetic only I know what it means .Still stays with me so I will give you one hint .. Olive Trees produce oil half of the year, the other half there’s drought .

You just finished a tour with Kings Of Thrash – what was that like? Any cool tour stories?!

OMG yes many Cool stories it was very successful and even though i was the only woman performer and in between thrashers people welcomed my music with so much warmth.
I created a skull prop ”JANE’ before the show in the UK while the others had their soundcheck , me and Dave had facemasks in the tour bus (I impose that it’s my rule haha )
Tour bus got on fire in England. Johan, my manager was driving me with his car behind the tour bus cause I couldn’t always sleep in there . Thank God cause we used the car to fit in our equipment to play Athens , tour bus left us to drive to Milan . I mean this adventure who could forget ?! I had this crazy idea to create a Jackson photoshooting for Dave , Marko , Mick and Chaz it was really fun.

Blaze Bayley was at two of my shows, the guys took photos with him and at some point when I was backstage with my white robe on and he approached and said to me ”nice Horns ” I said thanks. haha.

The Sold outs of course were amazing to see so many people screaming ! crazy stories on the road, happy and sad but overall a great big journey.

Starting your own record label, Baby Mistress Records, is a bold move! What motivated you to take this step, and what has the journey been like so far?

Baby  Mistress is literally my baby, my investment, my pain, my glory. Johan was fishing for record labels two years ago ,  and I was waiting for over a year for results. He didn’t want to tell me what was wrong , until one day I was fed up and I required to know. Long story short I got rejected by 23 Labels… every single one you can imagine in the business. what surprised me was the comments on my sound, song writing , even my clothes ..and then after my small depression I woke up and said to myself ” think about this ..it’s all MEN Ceos” and A&R and I’m the Mistress of the Night. Then I created my own label and now they can all sit on my middle finger. Skies is N31 in the FINAL ALBUM CHARTS USA of 2024. This is all my pain and my glory.

audry album

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced running Baby Mistress Records, and how have you overcome them?

Nothing went wrong, it’s growing slowly. It’s now amongst the big ones regarding the charts .

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are trying to navigate the industry and make a name for themselves?

Be unique no matter what they say . Don’t succumb, they think only for themselves . Stay true to what you like.

What’s next for you and Baby Mistress Records? Any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon that you can share with us?

Yes a dream came true for me , writing songs with Ron Wasserman the mastermind behind the songs of POWER RANGERS and all the nickelodeon hits. That’s how
I started loving Metal anyway because of Ron .

Rising Stars: SPLEEN (interview)

spleen

SPLEEN ARE: Samuele Riccucci – Guitar and Vocals, Matteo Innocenti – Drums and Backing Vocals, Olmo Fantini – Guitar and Backing Vocals, Alberto Sanna – Bass

Spleen are a fierce and feisty Italian four-piece. Earlier this year they signed with renowned rock label Contempo Records and are now fully fired up and set to unleash a darkly charged collection of music and live dates- and maybe raise a little Hell whilst having a good time! The band released their own take on the iconic track “Making Plans For Nigel” to some acclaim late last year. The track is taken from their upcoming, yet-to-be-titled debut album – set to land in early 2025.

We had a chat with the band after their recent gig dates in London:

Tell us about your cover of XTC’s Making Plans For Nigel’ – what made you decide to cover that particular track?

“Making Plans for Nigel” is undoubtedly a fantastic track with an unmistakable sound that still feels fresh after all these years. Our version is definitely reimagined, although we tried not to stray too far from the mood of the original.

Do you know if members of XTC have heard your version?

It seems they’ve heard it and liked it… believe us, this is mind-blowing for us! We never would have expected it…

You’ve just played the Hope & Anchor and the Spice of Life venues in London- what was that like? What was the reaction?

Stepping into the Hope and Anchor feels like walking into a museum… some of the greatest artists have played here, and the idea of performing in such a place is truly thrilling. The audience was amazing: there was a large group of people who came all the way from Florence to support us, and that was incredible! The English crowd is also incredibly warm; they make you feel so good on stage that you never want to leave…

Are UK fans different to Italian ones?

Maybe they’re more familiar with our type of music, but other than that, we didn’t notice any major differences.

What’s the best part about performing live for you guys? How do you gear up for your gigs?

One of the best parts is when we come down from the stage after the concert to meet the fans; it’s always great to greet them and have a chat. In addition to our instruments, we also pay a lot of attention to the visual side of things, so we’ve often brought props like mannequins, objects, posters, or things to throw into the crowd…

Any wild or memorable moments from past gigs that you’d like to tell us about?

At our last concert in Florence, we heard the crowd singing our “What’s Behind the Sun” really loud for the first time. They knew the lyrics so well, and there were so many of them… it was amazing. Another incredible moment happened at The Spice of Life when Roman Jugg from The Damned came up to us after the show to compliment us!

It was truly emotional.

Incidentally, did you get a chance to look around London and do some sight-seeing, culture, pubs etc?

Yes, absolutely. We got around a lot, and all the pubs were really cool. We had the chance to talk to people about music, and we noticed that there are far more venues to play compared to back home.

What are your thoughts on London and the UK?

We’d definitely love to return to London soon and maybe explore more of the UK…

What’s your approach to writing songs as a band?

Lately, the songs have been coming together quite spontaneously during rehearsals, with great chemistry among the members. The lyrics are mainly written by our lead singer.

tell us about your forthcoming album – when is it out and what can fans expect to hear?

We hope to release it in 2025. We want it to feel like a concept album, not just a collection of everything we’ve done so far. We’d like to experiment with new sounds, maybe darker and heavier ones.

Any new gigs planned for 2025?

We have some important festivals lined up, but we can’t reveal anything yet… follow us on social media because we’ll be announcing something soon.

What legacy do you hope to leave in the rock world, and what’s next on the horizon for Spleen?

It might be too early to talk about legacy… for now, we want to experiment a lot, try new things, and do plenty of live shows.

Album review: RINGO STARR – Look Up

RS look up

Decca Records [Release date 10.01.24]

Being a member of the biggest band of all time seems to be the weightiest of dual edged swords. Whilst the expectation of any new material from a former Beatle is hugely anticipated, it’s inevitable that every note will be put under a microscope by both critics and the public.

Of course, all of the Fab Four have gone on to carve their own names and paths in the fifty-five years since the band broke up but the one thing holds true is that they’d always brought out material that they believed in, pouring out heart and souls.

Getting to that dizzying level of fame and wealth means you can do exactly what you want and the term ‘contractual obligation album’ never comes into the equation, this is music for the love of music’s sake.

‘Look Up’ is a different angle from Ringo Starr, his muse leaning him into a full album of Country music and featuring a number of famous friends along the way. Whilst his love of the genre has been well documented over the years, this sees him fully exploring country and having some real fun whilst doing so, the whole shining with class and a good humour.

One thing that’s also done here is that Starr and Co eschew the usual tropes and trappings that some see as clichéd, the whole mood of the release upbeat and far away from the darker, self-absorbed and self-pitying lyrics that plagues country music to the uninitiated. True to form, the ever-smiling Ringo sprinkles the whole with love and peace, even in the more mellow moments.

Things get off to a rollicking start with the shuffling ‘Breathless’, young bluegrass rising star Billy Strings adding his own touches of magic and on the rolling and atmospheric ‘Look Up’ the equally stellar Molly Tuttle contributes some lovely splashes of colour to the musical palate.

Both artists appear again later on during the album, Tuttle shining particularly brightly on the duet ‘Can You Hear Me Call’, the addition of this new generation giving extra fire to proceedings.

This though is far from an effort to throw the baby out with the bathwater or reinvent the wheel as superstar producer and all-round musical genius T Bone Burnett brings an authenticity to everything he touches and ‘Look Up’ is no exception. Able to bring both a shimmering sound to the project whilst imbuing it with warmth and heart, the traditional feel is tastefully shot through with these more contemporary elements.

As well as the more rambunctious numbers like the swinging ‘You Want Some’ that features Starr’s distinctive playing and the earthy ‘Rosetta’, real soul is to be found here and the gorgeous swoon ‘I Live For Your Love’ and a sophisticated ‘String Theory’ bring something special.

From the lush ‘Time On My Hands’ to the swooning 1960’s style delight of ‘Come Back’ there’s a lot to explore here and with Lucius, Larkin Poe and the sublime Alison Krauss joining the party this is an album that proves with the right heart and the best people around him, that the world’s most famous singing drummer still is passionate about what he’s doing.

This may be a different type of release from Starr but he’s certainly earned the right to do whatever he pleases and this is far from a vanity project but instead fits nicely into his eclectic and always fascinating catalogue. Love, peace and Stetsons, ‘Look Up’ is a leftfield triumph that really works and one that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Truly fab. ****

Album review : THE BIG DEAL – Electrified

Frontiers [Release date : 17.01.24]

The Big Deal are one of the many bands that Frontiers’ A&R man, Alessandro Del Vecchio has nurtured over the years.  All of them have benefited in some way from his presence . . . arrangements, production, songwriting, keyboards, bass and so on.

Since then, experienced guitarist Srdjan (Ronnie Romero/ Shadow Gallery) Brankovich, the band’s founder, has stepped up into a more leading role.

With his wife, Nevena Brankovic, they form the band’s centrepoint, handling guitar, production, songwriting and vocals.

Nevena is joined by the stunning Ana Nikolic at the mic. It’s been a while since we heard two female singers fronting a rock band.

On this, the band’s second album, a couple of high profile songwriters in the genre, Jonah (HEAT) Tee and Anders (Treat) Wikstrom have been drafted in to boost song quality.  They co-wrote opening tracks, ‘Like A Fire’ and ‘Survivor’, both released as trailer singles last month or two.

The singers, Ana and Nevena, have a sizzling stage presence and a look-don’t-touch dress sense. To the extent the PR always points out that Nevena is a classically trained pianist… brains as well as etc etc.

There’s some compelling material here.

The unusually named ‘Fairy Of White’ and the skilfully structured ‘Broken Wings’ (not that one, or that one, or…), verge on Symphonic Rock. Ana and Nevena swap operetta styled vocal lines, telling dramatic stories, driven by anguish and emotion, which adds a tone of theatre to the songs. Brankovich’s electric, electrifying axe soloing adds a further classy touch.

So yes, there’s a spark there, clear as day, as the better songs slow dance toward greater things.

That’s further emphasised by the galloping, wordy ‘They Defied’.  A song that’s apparently glorifying some kind of heroic act in Serbian history.

It brings to mind the band’s surefooted cover of the Nightwish song, ‘Amaranthe’, which in itself is again a signpost to a successful future. ***1/2

Album review : TOKYO BLADE – Time Is The Fire

Cherry Red [Release date : 17.01.25]

The Cherry Red reach has increased dramatically in recent years, and Tokyo Blades’ latest album, Time Is The Fire will be getting a considerable PR push around the 17/1/25 release date.

True heavy metal survivors, Tokyo Blade grew out of NWOBHM, and in the 40 years since their inception, they’ve become poster boys for revolving doors.

In multiple guises, they’ve have released 14 albums, it seems with a different line up each time.

And then, in 2014, the classic lineup reformed. Andy Boulton, Alan Marsh, Steve Pierce, Andy Wrighton and John Wiggins.

Time Is The Fire marks the band’s fourth album with the reformed line-up. A new world record. And hard on the heels of their lauded last album, Fury (2020), all those years and all that experience again explode in another blaze of high powered, high calibre heavy metal.

Since 2018’s Unbroken, it’s been quite remarkable how the band’s adoption of aggressive, driving rhythms; unobtrusive percussive thumps and prominent bass lines have been slickly streamlined, reminiscent of classic bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin.

The result is an entire album of un-reinvented wheels, armed with dark and profoundly dramatic lyrics and melodies. Heavy metal to remember.

Always a fine guitarist, Boulton nowadays plays with hard earned authority and the kind of invention that only comes from experience. A perfect match with Wiggins’ cleverly calibrated melodic metal axework.

Add Marsh’s powerful, swaggering vocals and we get a gloriously unfettered mix of artistic and commercial heavy metal.

Nine of the fourteen tracks are 5 minutes or more in duration. But they all seem over in moments.

It begins with the power chord nirvana of ‘Feeding The Rat’, a fist pumping confessional with considerable emotional power.

‘Moth To A Flame’ and ‘We Burn’ not only amplify Marsh’s profile as a heavy hitter vocalist, as a lyricist they reveal a raw expression of his life and times.

The dazzling, twinned axework pieces (between Boulton and Wiggins) are utterly inspired. ‘The 47’ and ‘Soldier On’ are ignited by the guitarists’ eminently melodic axework, trading licks with Marsh’s searing vocals.

That said, arguably, two slower tracks are the album’s standouts.

The sinister , dramatic narrative of ‘Man On The Stair’ and ‘The Enemy Within’ inject actual menace into a genre where gutteral growls and faux satanism pass for scary stuff.

Each is a six minute mini masterpiece. Each is as heavy as a heavy thing. And each has a vague Guns’n’Roses meets Whitesnake air of commerciality.

Say no more. ****1/2

EP review: LEADFEATHER – Roll The Dice

LEADFEATHER – Roll The Dice

Website [Release date 14.02.25]

With so many of the so called ‘heritage’ bands hanging up their spurs and retiring, fans old and new seek acts that tick the boxes of loud guitars and huge 1970’s swagger. In recent years the rise of acts like Rival Sons, Dirty Honey and Greta Van Fleet show that this appetite certainly hasn’t diminished and in fact, the pleasing number of young, second or third generation faces in the audiences have shown that both the sound and great songwriting has a life beyond the ever diminishing older classic acts.  Stand up then London quartet Leadfeather, the latest in line to shout loud and proud that their influences are firmly rooted in those halcyon days when giants strode the stadiums.

Joining driving force and guitarist Simon Hurts, bass player Daniel Devis and the unusually monikered singer Apostolos and equally fantastically named Thanos on drums, the four certainly wear their hearts on their sleeves on this six track EP. Recorded live in just three days, there’s an electricity here that perfectly suits the feel of the outfit, each number possessing a warmth and naturalness of how they operate. This raw approach gives an energy that may be smoothed over if they’d had more time and a larger budget but as it is it captures something of the urgency that made early rock ‘n’ roll so compelling.

Blustering opener ‘Roll the Dice’ is pure Led Zeppelin, full of bluesy arena-filling vibes and a big groove but never edging into parody the way that Kingdom Come or Jayler embraced, the following ‘Silver and Feathers’ a short instrumental palate cleanser. The light and shade displayed on ‘Higher’ highlights the combo’s grasp of dynamics nicely and the taut playing of ‘Danger Zone’ has a sense that this is a band who put the song first, rather than unnecessary ego-fuelled displays of flash musicianship.

There is bombast though and the huge riff and monster vocals on ‘Shoot for the Stars’ has balls a plenty before they slow down a little on muscular rock ballad ‘Why’, concluding the EP on a slightly more pensive note. Well structured, great writing and with some impressive performances, ‘Roll the Dice’ is a powerful introduction to a new name in the business who have got their sights set on the biggest stages in the land. It may be pubs and clubs at the moment, but the stadiums are beckoning as Leadfeather become ones to watch this year. ****

Album review : THE HAMBURG REPERTOIRE, 2 CDs

Cherry Red [Release date : 10.01.25]

It’s no exaggeration to say that popular culture in the UK – music, fashion, sexual mores, religion – experienced a revolution of mind, body and soul in the sixties.

On of the prime catalysts was “Merseybeat”. More specifically, The Beatles.

This CD package is an innovative, almost educational way to inform new generations of just where it all began.

Unless you’ve been living underground all your life, you’ll know that The Beatles shaped and formed their sound “onstage in Hamburg.” And that covers of the source material “would be recorded for the early albums, appear in radio sessions, or surface later on their respective solo projects.”
“Hamburg was a hard school. It was where it all began.”

It’s a nice coincidence that a deep dive documentary, airing recently on Sky Arts, has been delineating the Tamla Motown sound from its roots to its worldwide success.

There are parallels. The Hamburg Repertoire simultaneously, almost by accident, give us the story behind the label as well as the story behind the Beatles, their influences and the pop groups who followed in their wake.

Covers of songs by Motown artists such as The Isley Brothers (Twist and Shout), The Marvelettes (Please Mr.Postman), The Miracles (You Really Got A Hold On Me), Barrett Strong (Money) formed the foundation of the Beatles early albums, especially their second, With The Beatles (1964). The originals, here, still sound groundbreaking.

The same is true of Chuck Berry’s ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ and Meredith Willson’s show tune ‘Till There Was You’ (from The Music Man, 1957)… the fabulous Peggy Lee version is featured here.

Equally groundbreaking was the work of the legendary guitarist/ singer/ writer, Buddy Holly, an artist who the Fab Four held in awe. They covered his song, ‘Words Of Love’ on the With The Beatles album. The original (along with ‘Everyday’) is here.

Covers of Little Richard’s ‘Kansas City’ (Beatles For Sale) and ‘Long Tall Sally (The Beatles’ EP). The Coasters’ ‘Besame Mucho’ (Anthology pt1), Carl Perkins’ ‘Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby’ (Beatles For Sale) and Chuck Berry’s ‘Rock’n’Roll Music (Beatles For Sale) are here too.

Many hours onstage, every day, for weeks, months led to an ever widening repertoire. Some covers never made it from the Hamburg clubs onto a Beatles’ album, but are equally memorable and are included in this anthology. Songs by Ray Charles, Eddie Cochran, Bobby Vee, Arthur Alexander, Gene Vincent, Bo Diddley, Roy Orbison and more. And a special mention for Elvis’s ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and ‘Love Me Tender’, bookending the collection.

The Beatles’ breakthrough led to an explosion of talented, like minded popgroups aiming to do the same. And did.

And pop music changed forever. *****

Album review: JESSICA LYNN – All I Own

JL

Self-released [Release date 17.01.25]

Second full album from Jessica Lynn and we are lucky that she managed to record this one, as following a routine sinus surgery it led to a battle with post-operative complications and muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), which threatened to derail both Jessica Lynn’s voice and career.

“I hid what I was going through from everyone because I was afraid we would lose tour dates, opportunities, and I didn’t really want to admit that it was real,” Jessica admitted. “I started singing as soon as I could talk and I started my first band when I was 13.  Music is all I’ve ever known and the thought of potentially never being able to sing normally again was a feeling I couldn’t quite put into words.”

Forced to record in short 10-minute intense bursts of vocal effort, it really is a testament to the human voice and will that she completed the album.

Joining Jessica are Matthew Bauer (percussion), Andrew Harts (drums), Art Labriola (piano, organ), Steve Sterlacci (guitar) and she produced the album with Peter Calamera, who also played bass on the album.

The single ‘Something ‘Bout You’, written for her husband, is a perfect piece of country pop and one to brighten up any listening day. Touch of the Shania Twain’s on ‘Ain’t Do With You Yet’. Perfect tune for any upbeat country pop playlist.

‘Shame’ is an interesting one, with a distinct Santana vibe – even the guitar sounds like him – and a sultry vocal from Jessica. Different than what you’d expect but an album highlight.

Bob Riedel adds some exquisite pedal steel to the gentle refrain of ‘You Save Me’. Not sure who the male duetting on here is but they fit the song’s mood perfectly.

Jessica Lynn again proves with her latest album why she earns so many rave reviews and continues to gain fans worldwide. Plenty of country, a little bit of pop with a touch of Latino make for a whole lotta listening fun! ****

Gig review: PAUL McCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

Whatever your musical preferences (and the Beatles were in no way one of mine growing up), an objective analysis of the most significant figures in 20th century popular music would have Paul McCartney right up at the top, possibly only rivalled by Elvis Presley. Unlike the latter, he is still very much with us at 82, and any tour is therefore a culturally significant event.

After his universally acclaimed Glastonbury appearance in 2022 the ‘Got Back’ tour finally returned to his native UK for a pair of arena dates in both Manchester and these London shows. Sure, tickets were not cheap (£183 each for our tickets in the upper bowl), but the atmosphere had a real sense of occasion to it with an audience of all ages, not just ‘boomers’.

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

He came on stage in simple fashion, wearing a dark blue jacket, and, playing his left handed Hofner bass (for once the overused word ‘iconic’ was apposite), opened with ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, a lady in front of me moving excitedly in her seat like a throwback to all those screaming Beatlemaniacs.

Being of the age that associates Wings with ‘Mull of Kintyre’ and ‘Silly Love Songs’, there was then a pair of reminders that they were once in more credible rock territory, in ‘Junior’s Farm’, complete with some harmony lead guitar and ‘Letting Go’ which had an R’n’B feel with a bluesy guitar solo and the first appearance of a three man horn section.

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

His band, most of whom have played with him for over 20 years, were excellent, without ever trying to outshine their boss, notably the two guitarists Bryan Ray (who switched to bass when needed) and Rusty Anderson and even on a golden oldie like ‘Drive My Car’ the latter showed off some fine slide playing, while the horn section was prominent on more vintage Beatles in ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’.

After ‘Come Onto Me’ Sir Paul switched to guitar for ‘Let Me Roll it’, with a coda of a musical and anecdotal tribute to Jimi Hendrix a reminder that he is also a living witness to rock history, and ‘Getting Better’. He then moved to piano for a pair of Wings songs in ‘Let Em In’ and the lively rocker ‘Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five’ before dedicating ‘My Valentine’ to wife Nancy and ending that mini section with another trademark ballad in ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’.

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

The elephant in the room was the received wisdom that his voice has not weathered well. Yes it was thinner, and his speaking voice was also a little hoarse, but he is 82 for heaven’s sake. He benefits from well-placed band support and was a little less distinct on some of the faster numbers, but that lilting voice was still recognisably his and no one could say he butchered any of the songs, as some of his contemporaries or younger are known to.

This was put to the test on a stripped back section with Paul and band huddled at the front of the stage, opening with ‘I’ve Just Seen A Face’, and going all the way back in history to his pre-Beatles band The Quarrymen for ‘In Spite Of All The Danger’ and a surprisingly effective ‘Love Me Do’ with some blues harp from Paul Wix Wickens, who then enlivened ‘Dance Tonight’ with some accordion playing.

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

In the second half of the set the audio-visual spectacles became more elaborate and preceded by the usual anecdote about the civil rights movement, Paul delivered ‘Blackbird’ solo on an emblazoned platform, which rose spectacularly a good 20 feet above the stage then, after ‘Here Today’ with a loving dedication to John Lennon, he resumed at piano with an accompaniment to a video backdrop of the Beatles recent reconstituted No 1 single ‘Now and Then’.

In between a well-received ‘Lady Madonna’ and ‘Obla-Di Obla-Da’, with the crowd singing and dancing (encouragingly most of the lower bowl, where patrons are normally selective about standing, were on their feet for most of the show), there was proof of how McCartney either pioneered or successfully carried off nearly every form of rock going, in the almost art rock sounds of ‘Jet’ and the proto psychedelia of ‘Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite’.

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

It was George Harrison’s turn to receive an eulogy in his rendition of ‘Something’, the majority played on ukulele, while ‘Band On The Run’ featured some impressive slide, but then came the moment I had been dreading. There has always been a twee and whimsical side to him (which was at its worst during my impressionable 1980’s youth) and as he played ‘Wonderful Christmas Time’, a banal song inescapable in every shopping mall at this time of year, I found myself asking why he couldn’t have played these shows in any month but this? That said, the show was entertaining with the horn section dressed as elves and the arena shrouded in fake snow, while the Capital Children’s Choir were well worthy of the applause I gave in curmudgeonly fashion.

Back on track, we were in the home straight of one much-loved classic after another and after ‘Get Back’, Paul returned to piano for ‘Let It Be’. It was at this stage that I began to become unusually emotional, thinking that we were privileged to be hearing a living legend still around performing these iconic songs.

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

In complete contrast, ‘Live And Let Die’ featured the most spectacular pyro you could carry off indoors, then in another abrupt style shift, ‘Hey Jude’ featured all 20,000 participants in a great communal experience, which he helped, getting the men, women and then whole crowd to sing along. At this point I realised that these songs will still be sung two hundred years from now by everyone from football crowds to street buskers, and we were the lucky ones that saw at first hand the creator of these enduring works performing them.

How do you follow that? Well, the strength of his back catalogue is such that even the likes of ‘Yesterday’ and ‘The Long and Winding Road’ did not even make the cut this time. The answer was that he said he was going to do something very special for him, in the form of ‘I Got A Feeling’, as halfway through video footage of John Lennon appeared singing the second part of the song. ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ then segued into a raucous ‘Helter Skelter’, adding heavy rock to that list of musical styles, before a 2 hour 40 minutes set ended with an ‘Abbey Road’ medley of ‘Golden Slumbers’, ‘Carry That Weight’ and ‘The End’.

PAUL MCCARTNEY- 02 Arena, London, 18 December 2024

My euphoria was only dampened slightly when I discovered the following night was rendered even more special by the appearance of Ringo Starr (and Ronnie Wood). I would never have imagined saying this in my younger days, but the sense of occasion that we were witnessing (albeit maybe not for the last time?) a living legend, allied to a perfectly executed stage show, meant my last gig of 2024 came in as the most memorable.

Album review: MORGANWAY – Kill The Silence

MORGANWAY - Kill The Silence

Earache Records [Release date 31.01.25]

Morganway are back with a new album and their line-up remains as on their 2023 release ‘Back To Zero’, namely Callum Morgan (vocals, bass), Kieran Morgan (guitar, vocals), SJ Mortimer (lead vocalist), Matt Brocklehurst (keyboards, vocals), Nicole J Terry (fiddle, vocals) and Ed Bullinger (drums, vocals).

As SJ Mortimer explains, “This truly feels like a new chapter for us. We poured our souls, blood, sweat, and tears into this album. There’s magic in recording music the “old school” way – plugging in together and playing live, warts and all!”

They certainly achieve this on opener ‘Don’t Turn the Lights On Yet’, one of Morganway’s trademark Americana infused foot stompers. This is followed by ‘Boy On A Train’ – a song that demands repeated plays – and ‘Feels Like Letting Go’, another frantic piece of rock n roll meets Americana.

‘Edge of the Sun’ and ‘Kill the Silence’ bring the tempo down nicely, with the latter featuring a dreamy vocal from SJ Mortimer. When they play these sort of songs Fleetwood Mac always come to this reviewer’s mind, and yes, Morganway are in that league with their songs and harmonizing.

‘Halfway Tonight’ is another single in the waiting. Lovely piece of pop/folk rock a la Waterboys, whilst ‘Surrender’ features a passionate mix of guitar, piano and fiddle – almost Pink Floyd in parts!

They literally knock it out of the park on ‘I Feel the Rain’. A song complete with big guitar riffs, epic rock touches and all in just over six minutes. That is part of the beauty of this album as just when you think you have the measure of their sound, along comes a song like ‘I Feel the Rain’ or the soothing album closer, ‘We Sing’.

Morganway have an album here with a wide appeal and a few supports/joint headliners with the likes of say Brave Rival or Skerryvore would help their fanbase grow even bigger. What a great musical start to the year. ****

Becoming Led Zeppelin will get an exclusive IMAX release on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 February before a general release in UK cinemas on Friday 7 February.

Music Venue Trust have taken over ownership of Newport’s Le Pub venue.

This year’s Record Store Day takes place on April 12.

BPI’s annual report showed that UK-recorded music had an increase in sales and streams by 9.7% in the past year to 200.5 million albums (or their equivalent), marking a decade of uninterrupted growth. For the first time since 1994, sales of physical albums have seen a year-on-year increase by 1.4%, marking the 17th consecutive rise in vinyl purchases. Vinyl sales were up 9.1% to 6.7m units. However, the sale of physical CDs have fallen 2.9% compared to the previous year.

Top music venues are now booking two years ahead, locking in acts for 2027, and festivals are rushing to announce lineups earlier than ever.  With a shortage of headliners and tours increasingly expensive to run, hot new artists are already being scouted out for 2026, and the industry is changing the way it operates (The Guardian reports)

Few musicians are capable of drawing a broad cross-section of fans. “People seem to be buying tickets based on name recognition,” said Kelly Wood, national organiser for live performance at the Musicians’ Union. In turn, mid-level artists who in the past might have significantly contributed to a festival’s sales are now “really struggling”.

By playing on the largest stage and getting prime social media exposure, existing headline artists keep getting bigger – further distancing themselves from other acts, exacerbating the situation. “The gap between the top and the middle is really, really stretched,” she said.

The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), the UK trade body for music, video and games retailers, has issued its analysis for recorded music revenues in 2024 suggesting  “a 20-year high and an all-time record, exceeding the pinnacle of the CD era”, although this does not factor in inflation since 2001.

According to ERA streaming comprised around 85% of the total recorded music market last year, while physical sales made up 13%, and downloads the remainder.

Gig review: BLACK EYED SONS- The Lexington, London, 16 December 2024

BLACK EYED SONS- The Lexington, London, 16 December 2024

This debut gig by the Black Eyed Sons marked the start of something new, after one of the more ill-fated episodes in rock history. When the other members of the Quireboys dismissed Spike, whatever the ins and outs, without the singer the face, voice, image and original member of the band, the brand name was tarnished in the public’s eyes and after initially soldiering on without him they went on hiatus before too long.

But an exciting new chapter is just beginning- renaming themselves the Black Eyed Sons after a more recent Quireboys album (and after Guy Griffin’s nephew, we discovered this night) and have recorded their debut album with a number of well known collaborators, reflecting the respect in which they are held as musicians. Rather bravely with the album yet to be released, they emerged into the wider world with a headline show and the upstairs room in the Lexington was jam packed with curious fans.

BLACK EYED SONS- The Lexington, London, 16 December 2024

Not only are the members identical from the last Quireboys album, but ironically, they opened with a song from the old band in ‘Louder’ with some trademark excellent slide guitar work from Paul Guerin. The one addition was backing vocals from Ria Hall to give the sound a fresh dimension.

However, the BES have if anything a tougher sound and despite a piano intro to ‘Lie to Me’, the first of a number of songs to boast guest harmonica playing from Lee Vernon, keyboardist Keith Weir seemed to be playing more of a supporting role than hitherto. Next came the first of those all-star collaborations in the title track ‘Cowboys In Pin Stripe Suits’, which on the album features Joe Elliott and bore some of the seventies influences of Mott the Hoople, as befitting Guy and Paul’s roles in the ‘Down’n’Outz’.

BLACK EYED SONS- The Lexington, London, 16 December 2024

On ‘Medicine’, a collaboration with Buckcherry members, ‘Dig Me Out Of This Hole’ (originally written by Paul for Angry Anderson) and ‘True Colours’, Guy emerged both as a frontman comfortable in his own skin and a more than decent singer. His style is to elongate those vowels into a slight drawl like Ian Hunter or even Bob Dylan, and the absence of the guest singers on the album was certainly not felt.

They slipped in a couple of 21st century Quireboys numbers, ‘Stubborn Kinda Heart’ from the from the eponymous ‘Black Eyed Sons’ album, then ‘Hello’ with a sweet extended solo from Paul. It was noticeable that, whereas the two seemed to share guitar solos evenly in the Quireboys, the Geordie took nearly all of them, allowing his partner to focus more on frontman duty.

BLACK EYED SONS- The Lexington, London, 16 December 2024

Many of the new songs bore the hallmarks of the parent bands of their collaborators, be it the country rock-ish ‘Autumn Reigns’ (Blackberry Smoke), or ‘Foolin Yourself’ (Company of Wolves), featuring harmonica and big background vocals. ‘So Glorious’ was a Dan Reed cowrite while brand new single ‘Don’t Throw Me in the Corner’ saw Lee really whipping up a storm on harmonica.

Then Quireboys tradition was maintained as Alan Clayton from the Dirty Strangers came on to duet on a Mink Deville cover, ‘Savoir Faire’, with its sleazy barroom feel perfectly suited to a packed sweaty venue such as this. The printed setlists ended there but such was the reaction the band came back for an encore, indeed probably The Quireboys best-known song outside those much-loved debut album classics in ‘This Is Rock’n’Roll’.

BLACK EYED SONS- The Lexington, London, 16 December 2024

The music is not dissimilar to the previous band, albeit with a slightly rawer and heavier edge on this evidence. But much like the Black Star Riders reinvented themselves by shedding the Thin Lizzy monicker and making original  music, the Black Eyed Sons will within a short space of time lay old ghosts to rest, and their album and inevitably more live dates is going to be something to watch in 2025. They certainly made the best possible start on this night.

News: Get Ready to ROCK! announces top albums of 2024 based on weekly chart and poll (December 2024)

Get Ready to ROCK! The Best of 2024 - Top 30 Albums

Popular rock music website Get Ready to ROCK! has announced its end of year Top 30 album chart.  This is based on weekly activity at the website and via social media.

News and reviews editor Jason Ritchie explains: “We introduced a regular Top 10 album chart each week back in early 2021.  This reflected activity at the website and in social media.

More recently, we have had input from an active Facebook group and they have contributed to this year’s poll.”

The website announced entries 11 to 30 on 23 December, with the Top 10 countdown featured in a special radio show on Sunday 29 December (22:00 GMT).

The website’s radio station Get Ready to ROCK! Radio features the weekly listing every Sunday as part of  ‘Assume The Position’ presented by David Randall.

Says David: “This regular weekly countdown demonstrates the healthy range of music reviewed by the website and featured on the radio station.  Frequently we have entries for pop, folk or Americana rubbing shoulders with heavy metal.”

Jason adds: “With the input from our Facebook group, the Top 30 listing adds to the end of year reviewer ‘Best of’ selections.  We hope it helps signpost some additional and worthy albums from this year’s releases.”

The website published the reviewer “Best of 2024″ selections in early December and these were featured in a  special radio show on Sunday 22 December at 22:00 GMT.

Album review: EARLY JAMES – Medium Raw

Early James - Medium Raw

Easy Eye Sound [Release date 10.01.2025]

‘Medium Raw’ is the third album from Early James and one, as the album title suggests, recorded with a sound that thrives on a lived-in, real-world ambiance. Dan Auerbach (the Black Keys) once again produced the album and it was recorded in a rundown house, with each musician often in a separate room.

Dan stated that – “I wanted to try to find that power of when I first saw him, when it was just him and his guitar…the comforts and luxuries of the studio, where you’re able to hear everything and make adjustments and changes, wasn’t right for this project.”

Joining Early James on the album are long-time bassist Adrian Marmolejo, drummer Jeff Clemens and percussionist Sam Bacco.

The album also includes songs co-written with Auerbach and top Nashville songwriter Pat McLaughlin (‘I Got This Problem’); Sheryl Crow’s frequent collaborator Jeff Trott (‘Nothing Surprises Me Anymore’) and roots singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim (‘Go Down Swinging’).

Early James and Dan Auerbach really have succeeded in capturing a basic, bare bones sound and songs like ‘Tinfoil Hat’ sound, quite frankly, amazing. The guitar and drums in particular really stand out.

‘Gravy Train’ sounds like a long lost 1950′s blues recording, whilst ‘I Got This Problem’ has a cheeky little rock n roll swing about it.

Early James has a unique vocal style, not instant on the listener’s ears by any stretch of the imagination, but one that the listener enjoys on each repeated listen.

Not the easiest listen perhaps, however, worth repeated listens and an album that really lends itself to an immersive headphones listen. ***1/2

Album review: MICKEY JUPP – Times Like These

MICKY JUPP – Times Like These

Conquest Music [Release date : 13.12.24]

Described by The Guardian as “a quietly but profoundly influential figure in British pop music”, much of Micky Jupp’s influence has come via his songs being covered by the likes of Dave Edmunds, The Judds, Nick Lowe, Ricky Nelson, Dr Feelgood, Elkie Brooks, Roger Chapman etc, rather than his own solo success.

And almost in spite of himself (he effectively dropped out of the music “biz” 4 decades ago), the flame still burns bright, though it apparently took a lot of prompting by his Conquest Music label to bring him back into the public spotlight.

In fact, he never stopped writing, and ‘Times Like These’ is the third volume of home recordings gathered under the umbrella of The Boot Legacy’.

And home recordings are exactly what we get, in a minimalist approach which comprises Micky on piano and guitar on 13 solo efforts and 2 band outings.

And if some fans might hanker after the band arrangements to be found on the humorous ‘Function To Function’ or the hip shuffling,  honky-tonk of ‘You Bring Out The Blue In Me’, the sparser numbers do have the benefit of focussing on his evocative voice.

He’s a master of phrasing and timing with a bluesy behind the beat style. This allows him to deliver a great line with the intended emphasis and perfect diction.

The combination of his lived in voice and well crafted lyrics also gives the album a feeling of familiarity

He very much lives the part of the title of his 1978 Stiff records release ‘Old Rock ‘N’ Roller’, but with a feel and versatility that owes equal parts to say JJ Cale and Hank Williams.

The JJ Cale rhythmical influence pops up on the title track, on which a strummed acoustic underpins inimitable wordsmithery, on lines like; “out of the woods into the trees, trouble to trouble with the greatest of ease.”

Then there’s the understated ‘Baby Love’ and the clickety-clack and percussive snap of ‘The Impression’, which also nuances Hank Williams style phrasing.

The latter looms large on the wonderful ‘The Right Room’, on which his slighlty more trembly voice brings extra emphasis to an emotion in the priceless line: ”the blues were designed with little old me in mind, close but no cigar”.

Hank would surely have chuckled.

Jupp’s songs are shot through with humour, irony and reflection, while on the wistful and Hawaiian guitar sounding ‘Don’t Say Nothing At All’, he combines Williams phrasing with  Everly Brothers style harmonies on the hook.

And as he veers into country on ‘You Wouldn’t Know A True Love’, his phrasing moves from Hank Williams to Johnny Cash, while there’s a whiff of Nashville intent on the other country outing ‘I Very Very Know’.

He cleverly pays home to ‘I Cant Stand The Rain’ motif on the subtle word plays of ‘Love You For A Living’.

The couplet on the chorus alone is worth dwelling on: “I could love you for a livin, here I am living on the loving that you’re giving me.”

His arrangements always support lyrical intent as evidenced by the way he fattens a vocal line to further underpin an emotion or an exclamatory line.

And while the brush stroked shuffle of ‘Doctored’ might be a distant reworking of his self penned Dr. Feelgood classic ‘Down at the Doctors’, he saves his most blatant musical autobiographical reference for ‘Honky Tonic’.

The Leon Redbone style shuffle makes use of an immediate one-line hook, and lyrics which seemingly sum up his live music aspirations, or otherwise: “Somewhere there’s got to be a little ol’ bar with a little piano and a lot of guitar.”

The use of the comparisons above is probably due to the fact that Jupp’s music never reinvented the wheel. Rather it’s his ability as an inward looking observational storyteller with subtle use of metaphor, irony and humour that has consistently infused his beloved rock and roll and roots music with an evolving identity.

He closes with the contemplative shuffle ‘Wrong Food’, the sort of song that draws you in, much like the album does as a whole

In sum, ‘Times Like These’  is something of an ambivalent title, because you can’t help but feel that if this extraordinary octogenarian were to make it to a full century of years, he will surely still be churning out the same intricately woven songs with a timeless and at times universal appeal. ****

Gig review: BRAVE RIVAL – Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

BRAVE RIVAL- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

The choice of several of this website’s writers, me included, as act of the year, I’ve seen Brave Rival many times over the past two years. Of all the venues, my favourite was the Thames Side Brewery, not too far from me and very much a rock taproom, from the musical references in the names of their ales to the guitars on the walls.  It appears to be the band’s favourite too as this was their third appearance here in little over a year, and there is always a looser and more informal feel to their shows here, with their chatty banter given full reign.

However, it was tinged with sadness as one of the last gigs for Chloe Josephine, one of the pair of female vocalists who have given the band such a distinctive sound. Understandably she has decided that their extraordinary gigging schedule cannot be reconciled with the need to give time to a young family.

BRAVE RIVAL- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

On this occasion there was a support from Thomas Heppell, wearing his trademark fedora, solo but playing a mixture of acoustic and electric guitars and particularly strong on slide, notably on a cover of ‘Rolling and Tumbling’. The majority of the set was originals and though most like ‘She’s Fine As Wine’ were in the blues idiom, ‘Hey Victoria’ was totally different, a piece of modern pop that apparently has had radio airplay.

He also has a lot of self-confidence to play the ‘entertainer’ with witty remarks such as playing on the fact he used to be a Police Officer in the town and recognised many faces. The old standard ‘John the Revelator’ featured a singalong and his on-stage antics stretched out a closing BB King cover, before he was persuaded to do an encore of ‘Victim of Circumstance’. Even in this format it was clear he is someone to watch.

BRAVE RIVAL- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

Brave Rival made a very charismatic entrance as the two women, Chloe and Lindsey Bonnick, made their way through the crowd to join their band mates, sporting very fetching headgear. However, the moment was rather spoiled by the vocals being all but inaudible on a couple of harder rocking openers in ‘Bad Choices’ and ‘Seventeen’, while the guitar was rather drowned out by the drums.

Fortunately, the sound gradually attained a better balance: however, all the pre gig chat had been whether Chloe would even make it, after a chest infection forced her out of a gig a couple of nights previously. Fortunately, as both women created a full vocal sound on ‘Guilty Love’, a big scream was a reassuring sign she was match fit.

BRAVE RIVAL- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

They are far far more than a blues band these days, but ‘Stars Upon My Scars’ is their epic slow song, with some quite brilliant work from guitarist Ed ‘The Shred’ Clarke whose dirty slide guitar playing on the cheeky ‘What’s Your Name Again’ was equally impressive.

The set is now based very heavily around the new album ‘Fight or Flight’, whether stuff I hadn’t heard live such as the lively and raunchy ‘Stand Up’, to those which have been tested for a while like ‘Fairytale’. Both showed the rockier side of their repertoire and how well Ed and the rhythm section of Billy ‘Danger’ Dedman and Donna Peters gel together, complementing those melodic and soulful vocals which were highlighted by the ballad ‘All I Can Do Is Think About You’.

BRAVE RIVAL - Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

The first set closed with a real treat in their cover of ‘Tennessee Whiskey’- I wondered if local singer Gemma Dorsett would reprise her guest slot from last time but instead Thomas Heppell returned to the stage and he and Ed seemed to be urging each other on to greater heights as they jammed together and traded lengthy solos.

The second set was slightly shorter, not least to protect Chloe who admitted that her lower vocal range was affected by her illness. It opened with the lively grooves of ‘Heart Attack’ but once again the newer songs predominated. These included ‘On The Next Round’ with Lindsey banging a cowbell – having heard this live a few times I wondered why it wasn’t on the album, so it was good news to be told it was part of three further tunes to be released over Christmas.

BRAVE RIVAL - Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

‘Unravelling’ was another off the new album that I hadn’t heard live, and the two singers traded lead lines on the chorus seamlessly.  However, after two more from the new album in a sassy  ‘Five Years On’ and ‘Blame The Voices’, sadly they said the set was already coming to a close. Thankfully this was not before a quite beautiful vocal treatment of maybe my favourite song on the album, ‘Heavy’.

Appropriately led off by a bass intro from Staines local and birthday boy Billy, the encore ‘Sink Or Swim’ was another good example of the scale of ambition they have realised with the new album. The venue made a presentation of flowers to an emotional Chloe and the crowd bayed for one more but after a quick rendition of ‘Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life’ she and the band bade a bittersweet farewell.

BRAVE RIVAL- Thames Side Brewery, Staines, 8 December 2024

Another excellent gig in very challenging circumstances, it was a fine end to a 2024 that has been very good for Brave Rival. They have created some very special magic together, so best wishes must go to Chloe and the rest of the band as 2025 marks a new chapter of change for them both.

Album review: MAGNUM – Live At KK’s Steel Mill

MAGNUM - Live At KK's Steel Mill

SPV Steamhammer [Release date 10.01.25]

Twelve months on from Tony Clarkin’s passing, and marking 50 years since he formed the band with Bob Catley, Magnum’s latest (and maybe last) live hurrah allows us more grieving time.

The band had put its collective gigging life on hold during the two years preceding their March/April 2022 dates (with the last two cancelled due to illness), Covid preventing the promotion of ‘The Serpent Rings’. But, back in action, Clarkin and his cohort assembled for a handful of dates in December 2022 including the Xmas finale in Wolverhampton.

The irony of all this is that the band were firing on all cylinders, evidently buoyed up by their lack of activity during the pandemic. With two albums “backing up” it is inevitable that they were given short shrift in the setlist. ‘Where Are You Eden?’ and ‘The Archway of Tears’ recalled ‘The Serpent Rings’ whilst ‘The Monster Roars’ yielded the title song and ‘The Day After The Night Before’.

The rest of the setlist is pretty much “business as usual” with the core classics present and correct such as ‘Les Morts Dansant’, ‘Vigilante’ and ‘On A Storyteller’s Night’.

It is good to hear a rousing version of ‘Lost On The Road To Eternity’ and ‘The Flood’ which had worked its way back in to proceedings and shining a light to the underrated ‘Sleepwalking’ album.

This double album is really a keepsake, a bookend on a wonderful era of the band’s history (i.e. post 2000) as fully outlined in our special feature in December 2023.

Collectors should be aware that a live double CD was released as a bonus with the special limited box set edition of ‘Here Comes The Rain’ although this latest release comes with a 24 page booklet.

The DVD version of the gig was a bonus disc with the band’s last studio album released a few days following Clarkin’s death. He was never one to give away much emotion at a gig, letting the songs do that, but he does seem somewhat pensive for the duration. His health evidently deteriorated in 2023 and a European tour for March/April 2024 had already been cancelled before his death.

Whilst this might not be the best ever Magnum live album it now achieves historic proportions. It merely reiterates what the faithful have known since earliest times. Magnum are a wonderful band and on this showing Messrs Benton, Morris and Ward do full justice to the legacy.

Following the illness announcement, when I interviewed Bob Catley and Lee Morris in December 2023 they didn’t think Tony would adapt to my suggested lower-key idea of acoustic gigs.  For him it seems it was full-on or none.  ‘Live At KK’s Steel Mill’ is final testimony to that.

Let’s hope the tribute gigs in January lead to both a re-evaluation and maybe even a revival. It would be a great shame if these songs were not heard live again and as long as the genial Bob Catley has the spirit to guide them.  ****

Gig review: STRAY – The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 7 December 2024

STRAY- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 7 December 2024

My sixth and final trip of the year to the Cavern which has been keeping the flag flying for live music ‘Sarf of the River’ was, fittingly, for a true rock legend.  Stray founding member and guitarist Del Bromham has not only kept the flag flying for the band, but last year’s ‘About Time’ album demonstrated their continued relevance with a fresh line up, and that he still has had something to say both musically and lyrically.

He has played solo shows here in the past but on this occasion fronted the full Stray band, minus second guitarist and singer Pete Dyer who was a victim of Storm Darragh, confined to home after an accident closed his road.

The remaining quartet improvised admirably to cover his parts plus it did give them a little more space on the cramped stage. There was a good mixture of Stray fans, Cavern regulars and at least a couple of musos in Dave Bucket Colwell and John Fiddler in attendance.

STRAY- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 7 December 2024

For Stray’s own last show of the year, Del promised a varied set of old, new and some they had not played in a while and was as good as his word, opening with ‘Time Machine’  from their 1970 debut, among the very best of those memorable riffs from the band’s early days, worthy of ranking with the more famous Purple, Zeppelin and Sabbath ones.

‘After The Storm’ was even better and a showcase for some outstanding soloing before he introduced a pair from second album ‘Suicide’ with a strong anti-war message that remains relevant in ‘Jericho’ and the much more rarely played ‘Son Of the Father’. It featured a mid-set passage showcasing some military style drumming from the powerhouse Karl Randall and keyboards from Simon Rinaldo, a more recent addition which often, as in this case, gave the songs a bit of a Uriah Heep feel.

STRAY- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 7 December 2024

The new album was represented by ‘Better Day’,  written in and about the strange days of the pandemic and the autobiographical  ‘I Am’ before another with an anti-war theme in ‘1600 Pennsylvania Avenue’, and appropriately enough, during the folky elements of ‘Our Song’, he burst into a wickedly accurate Bob Dylan impression (with Jools Holland later another spot on target of his mimicry).

There were more new songs in ‘Shout’ with added keyboard stabs from Simon and ‘Living The Dream’ an illustration that the new material is certainly feels more mainstream and melodically song oriented than the vintage early seventies material.

STRAY- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 7 December 2024

As the set wore on the ‘Pye’ era mid to late seventies incarnation of Stray got more of a look in and ‘Houdini’ was a good example of how bassist Colin Kempster’s singing supported Del and helped cover Pete’s absence before a final newie in ‘Black Sun’, Del picking up a Les Paul and cranking out a riff every bit as good as his vintage ones.

As befits a man who has carried off ‘songs and stories’ type shows, there were plenty of anecdotes and reminiscences, and his quick, ‘cheeky chappie’ wit was in evidence with some innuendo laced humour delivered with old school music hall comic timing, as well as the tongue in cheek ‘Percy The Pimp’.

There are two epics that every Stray set must feature. Over nine minutes plus, ‘I Believe It’ began with a long keyboard intro from Simon, then led into an anthemic chorus and lengthy, soaring solo, then after an unexpected diversion in ‘Buying Time’, with the band carrying off a funky mid-seventies groove, the song that Iron Maiden covered and returned Stray to the rock world’s consciousness in ‘All In Your Mind’. All that was missing was Del’s party piece of dangling the guitar from a speaker stack, though as he rocked out a monitor did nearly topple over.

STRAY- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 7 December 2024

That would have been a fitting finish but even after two hours the band were persuaded to do an encore in ‘Pretty Things’, which was a grower. This was a pretty definitive Stray set and showed that Del Bromham, over half a century and more, has been a significant talent, historically underappreciated but – along with his talented bandmates – still with much to offer.

Gig review: THE SHEEPDOGS, THE COMMONERS – Islington Assembly Hall, London, 5 December 2024

THE SHEEPDOGS, THE COMMONERS- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 5 December 2024

By coincidence, for the second week running, Islington Assembly Hall played host to a pair of bands playing music inspired by the sounds of the American south, yet based thousands of miles apart.  On the heels of Robert Jon and the Wreck and These Wicked Rivers, an altogether larger crowd was in evidence for a pair of bands all the way from Canada, but with their hearts way further down south on the other side of the Mason Dixon Line.

The junior of the two partners, The Commoners, have been regulars here for the last couple of years and impressed me when I saw them for the first time in the summer at Maid of Stone. The Toronto quintet’s sound on songs like openers such as ‘Shake You Off’ and ‘The Way I Am’ is strikingly similar- particularly in Chris Medhurst’s vocals-  to the early Black Crowes.

THE SHEEPDOGS, THE COMMONERS- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 5 December 2024

‘Gone Without Warning’ had a faster and more urgent feel to it before a total change of pace as both the title track of current album ‘Restless’ and ‘See You Again’ were country-ish with delicate slide work from guitarist Ross Hayes Citrullo and Chris adding acoustic. The twin guitar intro from the pair and the prominent keys helped ‘Devil Teasin’ Me’ to be the nearest in the set to an epic. More Crowes-esque numbers (fortunately delivered crisply and without excessive jams) in ‘Fill My Cup’ and  ‘Find a Better Way’ ended a very fine set from a band making the UK their second home.

THE SHEEPDOGS, THE COMMONERS- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 5 December 2024

Hailing from considerably further west in Saskatoon and sporting impressive facial topiary and retro clothing, The Sheepdogs seem to have built a larger following. I saw relatively few familiar faces from the London gig scene yet it is clear they have attracted an audience both young and old, male and female who don’t use the same channels as I do to find out about classic rock. My only previous show of theirs was at the Electric Ballroom a couple of years ago- at that time they were still bedding in a lineup change which has settled down nicely.

Opening with ‘Find the Truth’ and ‘Downtown’ where those fans were singing along to the ‘keep all my money in a paper bag’ chorus, their sounds were right up my alley, in particular the regular twin guitar harmonies between broad shouldered lead singer Ewan Currie and the diminutive Ricky Pacquette. They not only presented a visual contrast but had different guitar styles, the former more melodic and languid, the latter bringing a sharper hard rock edge, usually on a Gibson Explorer.

THE SHEEPDOGS, THE COMMONERS- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 5 December 2024

Ewan’s voice has almost an old-fashioned western feel which adds to their distinctive sound and ‘Let Me In’ was pure fifties style rock’n’roll while ‘Bad Lieutenant’ (sic) began in quite Creedence-esque fashion but was enlivened by a trading of lead lines between the guitars and the piano, the latter courtesy of Ewan’s brother Shamus.

But if Black Crowes are the band the Commoners most resemble, the Allman Brothers are the reference point for the Sheepdogs more than any other, particularly demonstrated on both ‘Southern Dreaming’ with a repeated twin lead passage and ‘How Late, How Long’ , with Shamus’ organ work and a Betts-like fluent guitar solo from Ewan, followed by a heavier one from Ricky on his Les Paul.

THE SHEEPDOGS, THE COMMONERS- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 5 December 2024

‘I’ve Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be’ was plainly a crowd favourite and ‘Now or Never’ was another stylistic throwback to the likes of Roy Orbison. ‘Take Me For a Ride’ was extended for a singalong, while the title track of recent EP release ‘Hell Together’ had a mellower start but turned into a jam prominently featuring piano and slide guitar.

After ‘Darlin’ Baby’ represented a diversion into old school country,  ‘Scarborough Street Fight’ upped the hard rock element in the manner of the later seventies southern bands. By this stage some of the jams were perhaps a little long but, as with the Commoners, Allmans-like self-indulgence was in the main avoided.

THE SHEEPDOGS, THE COMMONERS- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 5 December 2024Photo: Andy Nathan

‘I Don’t Know’ had me thinking that the Marshall Tucker Band are another noticeable influence, but the best was yet to come as on ‘Nobody’, Shamus in his dapper powder blue suit came out from the keyboard to complete a triple lead guitar line up, and their ‘guitar army’ pose as a jam came to a close was a sight to gladden any southern rock fan’s heart.

I actually thought first encore ‘Roughrider 89’ was one of the weaker songs of the night but things got much livelier when Shamus again appeared up front to play a synth solo on a keytar and generally ham it up with a knowing grin on his face. It set us up for a final encore to close this generous hour and 40 minute set in the fuzz-drenched ‘Feeling Good’ (ironically a rare song with a more contemporary sound), which summed up how we all felt after a night of retro sounds that deserved that old Kerrang! epithet ‘Maple Leaf Mayhem’.

Gig review: GUN – Barrowlands, Glasgow, 14 December 2024

Over the years many bands have embarked on a pre-Christmas tour around the nation. Status Quo and Motorhead are two that spring to mind, and going further back in time, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band’s Xmas shows in the Glasgow Apollo have taken on legendary status.

Gun are the latest to join in on the festive frolics and their annual mid-December show at the Barrowloads has quickly established itself as a major ‘must do’ event on the Advent calendar. I, however, had other things happening the weekend of this year’s show, so decided to give it a miss. That was until I got an eleventh-hour call from a friend to say one of their party had fallen ill and did I want the spare ticket? Well, it would have been rude not to…

So, a quick run into Glasgow saw me entering the hallowed hall that is the Barrowland Ballroom just as the stage was being set for Kira Mac. I had, unfortunately, already missed an opening band, Collateral, which was a shame, but short of driving like Max Verstappen I was never going to make their set!

KIRA MAC - Barrowlands, Glasgow, 14 December 2024

Kira Mac, though, did a good job of warming things up nicely. The set started slightly later than planned due to a few Gremlins in the system (well it is Christmas!) and Kira said things were a bit nervy on stage waiting for something to go bang. Luckily, we were only treated to banging tunes during the curtailed set. Kira has a big, ballsy soulful voice and she blasted out the vocals with aplomb.

KIRA MAC - Barrowlands, Glasgow, 14 December 2024

Not having seen the band before I was slightly surprised at the heaviness of the tracks on offer. Of the 5 tracks aired the highlights were opener ‘One Way Ticket’ and ‘Climbing’ which rounded out the short, but very sweet, set. Kira announced at the end that they would be back in Glasgow early next year, and judging by the cheers as they left the stage, it could be a hot ticket.

However, the capacity crowd in the Barrowlands were there for one reason, to welcome back their local heroes, Gun. As the lights dimmed, we were treated to a festive blast of ‘Feliz Navidad’ which was then followed by the aforementioned SAHB with their live version of ‘Delilah’, complete with a mass singalong in the hall.

GUN - Barrowlands, Glasgow, 14 December 2024

A huge cheer greeted the band as they took to the stage and kicked off with ‘Lucky Guy’ from their latest album ‘Hombre’. The crowd reaction at the end of the first song was such that I am surprised there is still a roof on the Barrowlands. Dante and Jools looked genuinely surprised and humbled by the crowd response as they took in the heartfelt cheers, in fact Dante looked gobsmacked all evening!

‘She Knows’ followed before old favourite ‘Don’t Say It’s Over’ had the Glasgow Choir in full voice, if you could have bottled the atmosphere at that moment it would have been worth a fortune. The set featured a number of tracks from the ‘Hombre’ album which has been a great success, reaching the top ten in the UK album charts and number one in the Scottish charts, a fact that would be celebrated later in the evening…

GUN - Barrowlands, Glasgow, 14 December 2024

One of the highlights from the album was the band’s latest single ‘Falling’ which went down a storm. Another new track ‘Pride’ followed before we went back to the first album with ‘Money (Everybody Loves Her)’ much to the crowd’s delight. One more new song was aired, the aptly titled ‘Take Me Back Home’ which again had Dante thanking the crowd for their support and saying that the Barrowlands audience are the best in the world.

From there it was classic Gun tracks all the way and the crowd loved every minute. ‘Word Up’ featured the usual singalong on the chorus, and that was followed by my personal Gun favourite ‘Inside Out’, such a good song! ‘Steal Your Fire’ rounded out the main set and the band left the stage to rapturous applause.

GUN - Barrowlands, Glasgow, 14 December 2024

Dante and Jools soon reappeared for an acoustic rendition of ‘The Only One’ which then segued into ‘Taking On The World’ with the Glasgow choir in full voice on backing vocals which again left Dante speechless.

The rest of the band soon re-emerged to blast through ‘Better Days’, before ‘Shame On You’ brought the curtain down on another fantastic night with a band that never fail to deliver, especially on home turf. Dante promised to return for more of the same next year, I already have it planned in on my calendar, a festive treat not to be missed!

GUN - Barrowlands, Glasgow, 14 December 2024

Footnote -
At one point late in the set, the stage was invaded by local music business impresario Donald C Macleod, who was there to present the band with an award for sales of the ‘Hombre’ album. A timely recognition for one of Glasgow’s finest musical exports, and what better place to present it than in front of a sold out Barrowlands crowd?

Album review: WITHIN SILENCE – The Eclipse Of Worlds

Ulterium Records [Release date : 06.12.24]

On their third album now, Slovakian Power Metal band, Within Silence have reached the point where their grasp is the equal of an ambitious reach.

From the moment the opening track, ‘Land Of Light’ cranks up into sonic action, to the album’s last dying notes, all the pieces fit.

Yes, there are shades of Iron Maiden (The Mist, The Treason) and echoes of Stratovarius (Divine Power, Eclipse Of Worlds) running through the album like a trail of breadcrumbs, stopping off every few minutes to put a fresh spin on the genre.

But it’s clear that the band have developed considerably over those three albums. The writing is taut and honed to a sinewy strength, the melodies are memorable and the lyrics are for adults.

What impacts you most is the fact that there’s a rigour to the band’s music, hidden behind fluent, impressive playing, most notably on ‘Broken Thorn’ and the big ballad ‘Battle Hymn’.

Writer/guitarist Richard Germanus and vocalist Martin Klein will get the plaudits, and deservedly so, but it’s unquestionably a band album.

And it’s also an album that’s greater than the sum of its parts, even if one of those parts, the robust and thunderous, 12 minute closing track, ‘When Worlds Collide’ threatens to overwhelm all that’s come before.

But it doesn’t. Instead, it complements the preceding tracks, using social commentary to provide the song with a steady emotional pulse, and it works a treat. ***1/2
