Wednesday 13 March: The first ever Jimi Hendrix® pop-up store is to be opened in the heart of Soho to celebrate the release of “People, Hell and Angels”. The store will open for a limited time only from Monday 1 April – Friday 12 April 2013 at 8 Ganton Street London, just off the world famous Carnaby Street. The store will sell a limited collection of merchandise and will feature Fender® ‘Plug & Play demo stations’ in addition to hosting a Gered Mankowitz photography exhibition.

Janie L. Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix’s sister and President/CEO of Experience Hendrix, L.L.C., will make a special appearance at the store, signing copies of the new book Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Lyric Book from 4–6pm on the opening evening, Monday 1 April.  World renowned music photographer, Gered Mankowitz, will be making a special appearance at the store from 3–6pm on Saturday 6 April, where he will be talking about working with Jimi Hendrix, and will be available to sign prints of his work, which have been exclusively printed for the pop-up store.

The Jimi Hendrix pop-up store will feature the new album “People, Hell and Angels” as well as the entire Jimi Hendrix music and video catalogue (including CDs, LPs, DVDs and Blu-ray releases), including a number of titles that have never been available in the UK. It will also sell authorized limited edition Jimi Hendrix merchandise, including clothing, posters, art, books, collectible items, and guitar accessories including pick tins, guitar straps, and effects pedals. There will also be some very special merchandise pieces that have been created specifically for the store itself.

Providing visitors with a unique one-off experience, the basement area will be inhabited by Fender who will be running ‘Plug & Play demo stations’ where Jimi Hendrix fans can practice their guitar skills and attend ‘Jimi Hendrix Master Classes’ where they can learn to play Hendrix riffs and licks.

The store will also feature a photography exhibition, displaying pictures taken by Gered Mankowitz, the famed British rock photographer whose lens captured Jimi Hendrix on multiple occasions, and took the picture which became the cover for “People, Hell and Angels.

The pop-up store is a stone’s throw away from many of the legendary venues synonymous with Jimi Hendrix’s time in the capital including Bag O’ Nails, Ronnie Scott’s, Marquee Club, The Speakeasy and is in close proximity to his former central London flat on 23 Brook Street.

The pop-up store coincides with the release of People, Hell and Angels”, an essential new album premiering twelve previously unreleased studio recordings completed by guitarist Jimi Hendrix.  “People, Hell and Angels” is available now, digitally, as part of Classic Rock Presents: Hendrix – People, Hell and Angels Collector’s Pack, and as standalone physical releases on CD and LP.

People, Hell and Angels” showcases the legendary guitarist working outside of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience trio. Beginning in 1968, Jimi Hendrix grew restless, eager to develop new material with old friends and new ensembles. Outside the view of a massive audience that had established The Experience as rock’s largest grossing concert act and simultaneously placed two of his albums in the US Top 10 sales chart, Hendrix was busy working behind the scenes to craft his next musical statement.

These twelve recordings encompass a variety of unique sounds and styles incorporating many of the elements – horns, keyboards, percussion and second guitar – Jimi wanted to incorporate within his new music. “People, Hell and Angels” presents some of the finest Jimi Hendrix guitar work ever issued and provides a compelling window into his growth as a songwriter, musician, and producer.

Keep up to date and get involved with the Hendrix store tagging your posts with #HendrixCarnaby

Gig Review: THE DARKNESS – Hammersmith Apollo, 7 March 2013

The Darkness, Hammersmith Apollo, 7 March 2013

Two years into their reformation and on the back of a  comeback album ‘Hot Cakes’ that is perhaps their most satisfying work yet,  perhaps time has lent some perspective to the Darkness phenomenon.

A decade ago they divided opinion like no band before.  In one camp (pun intended?), those, myself included, thrilled that a band that combined Queen, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Boston influences became huge so quickly (I remember my incredulity that such a band even existed when a friend first told me they were playing the clubs in North London) and suddenly brought the music we love and old fashioned rock spectacle back right back into the pop mainstream.

The Darkness, Hammersmith Apollo, 7 March 2013

On the other, those turned off by Justin Hawkins’ falsetto and ridiculous costumes and antics, thinking they had heard it all before, dismissing them as a flash in the pan and wondering why they had succeeded where more deserving bands had failed.

The pop world moved on, as it does, to the next big thing, and the multi-million selling Permission to Land became a fixture in every charity shop in the land and their second album One Way Ticket to Hell and Back proved sadly prophetic with the effects of snorting too much ‘showbiz sherbet’ documented in the title track (which was the only number from the album played this night).

However the original line up now seem back on an even keel and even though second time round they have downsized to medium sized venues (the ‘Hammy O’ being respectably full for their second show here in 15 months)- and scaled back their stage show- no white tigers or boob chariots tonight- are still a wonderfully entertaining live act.

While he has reined in some of his excesses, Justin’s flamboyance is still very much the focus with all the stage lights focused on him and fellow band members Frankie Poullain, Ed Graham and brother Dan somewhat in the shadows, but providing a solid and reliable base. The latter is his perfect foil, pulling metallic poses and his chunky riffing complementing the searing guitar solos that Justin still finds time to play despite his on stage capers.

The Darkness, Hammersmith Apollo, 7 March 2013

After the strains of the Boys are Back in Town and a very theatrical intro, they opened with the autobiographical Every Inch of You, yet I was surprised that the new album was plugged relatively lightly and indeed there had seemed to be more new songs at their previous show when the album was still several months away.

Instead the set list (not to mention the enduring ‘gimme a D, Gimme an Arkness’ catchphrase) was heavily based on the debut with favourites like Black Shuck, the irresistible Growing on Me, Friday Night and Giving Up.

Surprisingly two of their biggest hits, Get  Your Hands Off My Woman and the ballad Love is only a Feeling with Dan playing the lead solos this time were slipped bang in the middle of the set rather than await the encores.

Disappointingly, new songs She’s Just a Girl Eddie and Nothings Gonna Stop Us seemed rather rushed and  lacking the sonic clarity of the album, while Concrete was probably the pick of the Hot Cakes material.

Stuck in a Rut was perhaps one song too far from the first album but, after stopping to take in the crowd’ s adulation, when Justin cranked the opening riff to I Believe in a Thing Called Love, a song almost universally known, a crowd that already included a generous moshpit down the front were going crazy.

Having only been on stage an hour, I expected a generous encore slot, which began with old B side The Best of Me with its Lizzy esque guitars and their cover of Street Spirit, coming over more late seventies Judas Priest than Radiohead.

In traditional Darkness fashion they closed with a lengthy Love on the Rocks With No Ice, Justin going deep through the crowd perched on Dan’s shoulders and still playing guitar, then inciting the crowd in some very Mercurial call and response from the top of a speaker stack.

Now that their public profile has dipped and no one any longer has to take sides, this gig proved beyond all doubt that the Darkness are simply a fine, straight ahead, if slightly tongue in cheek rock band who have few peers when it comes to spectacle and entertainment and leave you with a big grin over your face.

Album review: BIG COUNTRY – The Journey

Cherry Red (Released 15th April)

This marks a major step in Big Country’s history as it is the first studio album not to feature the late Stuart Adamson and the recording debut of the Alarm’s Mike Peters (who wrote nearly all the lyrics on this album).

They have been touring with much success with Mike Peters fronting the band, although this is the test to see if they can carry the band’s over to a new era. There is also a line-up change with original bass player Tony Butler who retired last year and his replacement is ex-Simple Minds bassist Derek Forbes, who joins the aforementioned Peters, original members Bruce Watson and Mark Brzezicki and Bruce’s son Jamie to complete the line-up.

Having Mike Peters singing and writing the lyrics will naturally lead to some Alarm comparisons, none more so than on the raucous opening song ‘In A Broken Promise Land’, which really does sound like Big Country and the Alarm jamming together.

The closing ‘Hail And Farewell’ is a slow burning anthem, again recalling the Alarm (by way of Runrig!) and I think this could well become a live favourite. Mike Peters has lost none of his passion and vocal power down the years and backed by the fine musicians that make up the rest of the band you know it is going to be an enjoyable album.

The classic Big Country guitar sound is all present and correct on the stirring ‘Another Country’, a song that allows Bruce Watson’s guitar playing a chance to shine. ‘The Journey’ has already been played live and released as a single and shows how the band have successfully kept the things that made the band a hit in the first place (strong athemic choruses, powerful guitars, strong and personal lyrics) and added in some newer sounds.

They have certainly won this fan over, although I love both Big Country and the Alarm. I don’t think at this stage in their career they will be bringing in many new fans but they have certainly produced an album that will please and keep their large, loyal fan base happy.

Interview: 10Q’s with DAVE MEROS (SPOCK’S BEARD)

Spock’s Beard release their eagerly anticipated new album ‘Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep’ through Inside Out on March 25th. Here we catch-up with bass player Dave Meros…

1. What are you currently up to?

I am currently trying to sort out work permits, tax exemptions, 100 problems related to the CD preorder, bulk CD manufacturing and shipping problems and whatever other wide and unexpected assortment of problems that can get thrown at me.  I have no idea how I became the lucky guy to always seem to have to take care of these things, but it has taken up a very large percentage of my time for the last few months.

Someday I hope to have a little time to learn the songs that I’ll have to play on the upcoming Europe tour, which runs from May 02 through May 19.  We also have a couple of Los Angeles shows on April 13 and 14.

2. This is the first album recorded with Ted Leonard and Jimmy Keegan. Did they bring their own ideas into the album and how have they settled into the band?

Yes, they both really contributed a lot.  Ted especially, by contributing two songs that he wrote entirely by himself (Hiding Out and Submerged) and writing lyrics to a 3rd (Afterthoughts).

Jimmy had lots of great drum ideas and vocal harmony ideas as well.

3. Could you take us through the new album ‘Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep’? (e.g. ideas behind the songs etc)

- Hiding Out was a song that Ted had written a couple of years ago and his intention was to use it on a solo CD that he was planning.  When he joined Spock’s he “spockified” that song and submitted it for the CD.

- I Know Your Secret was a song that I wrote with John Boegehold that started out as a demo of mine that was much different sounding than the final version.  My original demo was MUCH heavier.  We had to lighten it up quite a bit to be appropriate for Spock’s Beard, and a big part of that was changing the drum pattern.

- A Treasure Abandoned was a song the Al wrote with John.  It started with a theme that Al had written many years ago. . .late 90s  (I remember playing bass on an early version of that back in maybe ’97 or ’98). . ..and John filled in the rest.  I love the way this one turned out, it’s one of my favorites on the CD

- Submerged is the other song that Ted wrote years before joining the band.  It is actually on his solo CD.  It’s not particularly prog rock or something that you’d typically hear from Spock’s Beard, but it’s a great song, and when we were choosing songs for the CD Al heard it and went absolutely crazy for it.  We all really liked it actually, so we went ahead and re-recorded it.

- Afterthoughts is of course one of the quirky “Thoughts” style songs with the vocal round and odd lyrics.  This is a song co-written by Al and Neal Morse during a songwriting session that they had a few months before we began to choose songs for this CD.  They wrote the music and Ted wrote the lyrics for that one.  That writing session also produced Waiting For Me.

- Something Very Strange was written entirely by John Boegehold, and was the first completed song submitted for the CD.  There were a lot of ideas floating around and some unfinished song demos, but this is the first one that everybody said “OK, THIS is going to be on the CD for sure”.

- Waiting For Me was the other song written by Al and Neal Morse.  It’s very reminiscent of vintage Spock’s Beard and is the single long track on the CD.  When I first heard the demo I was convinced that it was TOO reminiscent of old Spock’s, almost to the point of being caricature, but once we all played on it, it was obvious what a cool song it was and how powerful it was.  It’s now one of my favorite tracks on the CD.

Bonus Disc:

- The Man You’re Afraid You Are is a song that Al wrote with his writing buddy Stan Ausmus.  The first part is a rock tune with a lot of swagger that alternates between time signatures.  It then goes into a part that we affectionately refer to as the “porno” part, then into a really quirky proggy section, then a very Beatle-esque ending.  How’s that for a description?  ha ha!   If you haven’t heard it, I bet you’re curious now.

Down A Burning Road is a song that started off with a big guitar theme written by Al then completed by John.  A really cool track, I love the choruses.

Wish I Were Here started off as a demo of Al’s that was basically just a wild guitar riff supported by bass and drum parts.   That song was not even close to being finished when it was recorded and it was basically constructed and arranged in the studio.   And for those of you who would ask me the significance of the lyrics ”TV with Dave” I actually don’t know. .. I’ve never asked Al about that.   I think Dave is just a name that fit the song well and vocally you can add a lot of sarcasm to it.

Something Very Strange (Sanctified Remix) is an alternate version of the song on the main disc, and I really like this version. .. maybe even better than the one on the main disc.  More groove, and cooler sounding.  Not as prog though, so it went on the bonus disc.  I could actually see this one getting a little mainstream attention.

Postcards From Perdition is a song that you’ll only find on the Limited Edition, which is available only by ordering on our website www.spocksbeard.com   It’s an instrumental track written by John Boegehold, really high energy and very “cinematic” sounding.

4. You are on tour for most of May. How do the band go about compiling a set list and will the new album feature heavily on this tour?

The first goal of touring is to promote the new CD, so we try to do a lot of that.  We’re doing six of the seven songs from the main disc, and probably part or all of one of the songs from the bonus disc, we’re still talking about that one.  Then of course we can’t get away without doing some of the older ones, so we’re throwing a nice number of those in as well.

Actually, the tour will be probably slightly more than half new material, then slightly less than half older stuff.

We compile a set list by just throwing around ideas. . .not too formal of a process.  If somebody really wants to do a particular song that goes on the big list, then we find out how much time we have to work with and work backwards from there, cutting the list down until we fit the time that we have.

5. What prompted the move to use Indiegogo to fund the mastering and how did it go? Is this the future for bands using their fans to fund a new album and then releasing it later via a record label to a wider audience?

We tried the preorder last time using our website, but we receive payments through PayPal, and they don’t allow a preorder to go for more than 30 days.  Our preorder for “X” was about six months.  They got wind of that and froze our account for six months, which was not a good thing. . .at all.

So to avoid the PayPal Police this time we first tried to establish a direct credit card portal on our website, but that turned into a multi-headed beast that became a situation where we would have had to basically pay somebody to rebuild our entire website and install a new web store, etc, etc, so we just went with crowd funding, mainly because we were seriously running out of time to get something up and running.

It seemed easier at the time, although trying to make a crowd funding site function as a web store created its own set of problems that we had to deal with.

Crowd funding, or any other form of independent fund raising is becoming more and more of a necessity for bands.  Long gone are the days of adequate recording advances from the record label, so we either come up with 2/3 of the money that it takes to record the CD on our own, or we just stop recording. .. the choice is as plain as that.

It’s a hassle for us, the record label doesn’t like it, but there is no alternative for us at the moment.  It’s getting harder and harder for bands in the “middle range” like Spock’s Beard is to survive in today’s social, technological and economic climate.

6. How important is social media like Facebook and YouTube for getting the band’s music more widely heard and known?

I don’t know. .. everybody makes a big deal about Facebook, but I haven’t seen any changes in our CD sales or concert attendance since Facebook exploded onto the scene, so I personally think social media a bit of an illusion, but I could be wrong, and I know that there are lots of individual cases that have made significant gains from social media, but as far as Spock’s Beard is concerned, we’re still looking at the same old numbers that we were looking at 8 or 10 years ago.

7. Neal (Morse) has a hand writing on the new album. Does Neal come in with ideas for songs or do the band have a song idea that you think would benefit with input from Neal?

It was Al that had a couple of musical ideas that he presented to Neal, and then they worked together on them. Both songs turned out great, so maybe we should do more of that in the future!

8. Going back to High Voltage back in 2011. What was it like playing live again on stage with Neal? Any chance you may tour with him again perhaps playing a classic album for the main part of set as many bands seem to like to do now?

It’s always great seeing Neal, especially when he can come on stage with us and run through a song or two.  He was a big part of all of our musical lives and I regard him as a great friend and one of the more influential mentors in my life.

As far as doing a full tour with him. . .I can’t rule that out, and there is nothing that would prevent that from happening, but I don’t see it happening.  We’re all way past that fork in the road and well on our own paths.

As far as playing a classic album as the main part of the set. . .right now, with a new CD out, that’s not the purpose of touring, and we seem to only be able to tour WHEN we have a new CD out, so again, nothing making that impossible but I don’t see it happening.  (We’ve tried to tour in between CDs, but promoter interest always seems to be lower in between CDs, so it hasn’t worked out)

9. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from music?

Anything that doesn’t involve solving problems and stress.

10. Anything else to add and a message for your fans…

Many thanks to all that had the faith in us to buy the CD on preorder, months ahead of even hearing the first notes.  We are very lucky to have your support over all these years.  And for the rest of you. . .check out the CD and come see us on tour if you can!

Album review: NO BRAGGING RIGHTS – Cycles

Good Fight (Release date – 28.03.13)

Southern Californian five piece, No Bragging Rights, have been around since 2006 and this is album number two. The band master in hardcore punk with a metal edge coupled with vitriolic lyrics which are spat out with venom.

The band though manage to mix a large dollop of melody into each track. So while the music is uncompromising,  it also has a harmonies and softer passages which add texture to the music rather than it being a full frontal onslaught. This is ably shown on the title track ‘Cycles’ which couples gruff vocals with a great chorus and strong vocal harmonies.

The band can do full on hardcore as well though. ‘Legacy’ is the best example of this, a fast and furious track with a grinding mid section and heavy guitar work. This, along with my track of the album, ‘Repeater’, show a band that have good songwriting ability and originality.

No Bragging Rights have created a good album here and, with a UK tour scheduled around the time of the album release date, they have an excellent opportunity to increase their fanbase  in the UK and beyond.

Gig Review: RIVERSIDE / JOLLY – The Classic Grand, Glasgow,16 March 2013

Bass players are second only to drummers in the musician joke stakes. Often seen as failed guitarists the art of the bass player is usually hidden deep in the depths of the live mix somewhere behind the bass drum. Tonight though we were witness to two amazing bass players who were front and centre and an integral part of the show.

First up was Anthony Rondinone in New York proggers Jolly.  Kicking off with ‘Storytime’ the band were seriously impressive mixing Radiohead style indie rock with ultra heavy prog metal passages.

The four piece are all consummate players with the aforementioned intricate basswork of Rondinone being evenly matched by the guitar playing of Anadale. The hat wearing Anadale looked genuinely surprised at the warmth of the Glasgow welcome and the energy from the crowd seemed to fuel the band.

At one point in the proceedings drummer Louis Abramson took to the mike to thank their fans for helping out the band last year. They lost their recording studio in Hurricane Sandy and it was only through donations from their fanbase that they were able to release their latest album and head out on this tour.

Other set highlights were ‘Joy’ and the closing number, ‘The Pattern’, which again featured another heavy mid section with all four on stage locked together with one common goal, to steamroller the crowd into submission. This was an impressive set from a very talented four piece.

With the Classic Grand now rammed and suitably warmed up, Riverside took to the stage with our second bass player extraordinaire.  As well as attending to bass duties Mariusz Duda also handles vocal duties with great aplomb.

Opening with ‘New Generation Slave’ from the band’s latest release, ‘Shrine Of The New Generation Slaves’,  they got things off to a gentle start. With the stage bathed in blue light Duda sang the quiet opening passage which soon gave way to heavier guitar and keyboard driven interludes.

Again all members of the band are seriously talented musicians with intricate bass patterns from Duda intertwining with the powerhouse drumming of Piotr Kozieradzki . This provides a solid base for the guitar and keyboard work of Piotr Grudziski and Michal Lapaj and provides them with a canvas upon which they create musical masterpieces.

Again the crowd were behind the band from the opening chords and were happy to participate where requested. One of the highlights was the shortest track of the night, ‘Feel Like Falling’, again taken from the new album. With a more commercial edge it is a number that gets lodged in your brain and had the crowd bouncing along.

It is however on the longer, more intricate numbers that the band really excel, ‘Driven To Destruction’ and ‘Left Out’ were possibly the highpoints of the set and the crowd lapped up every time change and bass flourish.

After a couple of encores the band left the stage to resounding cheers from an appreciative crowd who had borne witness to an amazing night.

The band were filming the gig tonight and if it eventually makes it on to DVD at some point it will definitely be one to add to the collection. Tonight proved that prog is alive and kicking and most definitely in safe hands. It also disproved the comment made by Blackie Lawless of WASP fame a while ago that the bass guitar is the ‘instrument of ignorance ‘, it all depends who is pulling the strings !

Quick plays: STRYPER, PAPER AEROPLANES

STRYPER – The Second Coming

Frontiers www.frontiers.it

Stryper are having second wind with two studio albums since they returned back in 2003 (plus a covers album) and they are currently working on a new album for release later this year. This album sees them re-record classic songs from their first three albums to give them control back over their songs. Plus there are two new songs, both featuring monster riffs and like the heavier songs they have done of late. Best of these is ‘Blackened’, although ‘Bleeding From The Inside Out’ is no duffer.

Of the re-recorded songs the main difference is that vocalist Michael Sweet veers away from some of the higher notes on the originals and ‘Visual Timekeeper’ (or drummer in any other band) Robert Sweet sounds slightly louder in the mix at times. A good selection of their classics as well with ‘Calling On You’, the monster ballad ‘First Love’ and ‘The Rock That Makes Me Roll’ personal picks.

If you’re fan bar the two new songs this is not a ‘must have’ I’d guess, however it is a great place to start for those new to the band. Yes their lyrics can be preachy at times and there are as good as, if not better white metal/rock bands out there but few have the consistency of music that Stryper have and they are a must see live. Roll on the new studio album…

PAPER AEROPLANES – Little Letters

Navigator Records (Released May 13th) www.navigatorrecords.co.uk

Third album from Paper Aeroplanes who are a duo consisting of Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn. They have already built up a decent head of steam via glowing reviews, airplay on 6 Music and Radio 2 plus plenty of live work. They have a few guests to help round out the music including on double bass John Parker, who is in Nizpoli who had a number one UK hit with ‘The JCB Song’.

Give the album a few spins to sink in as bar say opener ‘When The Windows Shook’, few songs grab the listener instantly. Slowly though it all clicks into place and the title track is a blissful moment of pop, recalling Kate Bush and Tori Amos. ‘Singing To Elvis’ shows what a lovely, wistful vocal Sarah Howells has.

The only downside is that fact it can take a little while to sink in, although that’s no bad thing in a world dominated by disposable pop pap.

Album review: ELEANOR McEVOY – If You Leave

Eleanor McEvoy - If You Leave

Mosco [Release date 15.04.13]

I’ve suggested in the past that I’d be happy to listen to Eleanor McEvoy sing the telephone directory – her soft lilting brogue is simply that addictive.

Looking for my latest ‘fix’, even I was concerned about the direction of travel.  The PR blurb promise of ‘neo retro blues’ (?) and the album artwork – a homage to the saucy seaside postcard artwork of the early 1900′s (an f-hole guitar entwined with a hastily discarded brassiere) made me wonder – had the solitude that peaked with ‘Alone’ (2011) finally found Eleanor staring into the abyss?

While covers have been a staple part of her recorded output and live shows since ‘Early Hours’ (2004), ‘If You Leave’ features four, alongside eight ‘new’ compositions.  The inclusion of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Color’s is no surprise – having been a regular feature of her live set over recent years, but The Beach Boy’s ‘God Only Knows’, ‘Lift The Wings’ from Riverdance, and Elmore James’ ‘Dust My Broom’ (covered by everyone from Ike and Tina Turner to Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac) and are perhaps less expected.

The blues have also been her intermittent companion since ‘Early Hours’, notably her marvellous interpretation of Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis Tennessee’ on that album, and her self-penned ‘The Way You Wear Your Troubles’ on ‘Out There’ (2006).

‘If You Leave’ is, however, closest to ‘Love Must be Tough’ (2008) in terms of direction of travel despite being something of a patchwork quilt of material that includes a reworking of ‘Land In The Water’ – a Dave Rotheray ‘Life Of Birds’ collaboration, and ‘Secret Of Living’ – Eleanor’s ‘Only A Woman’s Heart’ 20th anniversary number featuring Mary Coughlan, Gemma Hayes, Hermione Hennessy and Sharon Shannon.

But the creative inspiration for ‘If You Leave’ was the blues rock explosion of the 1960s, and in particular the Brian Jones’ story which sparked Eleanor into revisiting some of the classic albums of the genre by the likes of The Stones, The Beatles and The Beach Boys.

While not attempting to recreate the era, syncopated echoes resound – in particular, the clean guitar playing of Jimmy Smyth, and the purity of James Delaney’s organ work resonate with the period, complementing the more fragile numbers where just a single instrument underpins Eleanor’s vocals.

And it’s those latter moments that provide the more obvious highlights – aficionados will delight in the re-appearance and extraordinary piano playing of Brian Connor on ‘God Only Knows’ and ‘Lift The Wings’; and be equally enthralled by David Agnew’s sublime oboe accompaniment on ‘True Colors’.

Of course, the vocals and audiophile quality throughout never falls short of the exacting standards that Eleanor and partner Mick O’Gorman have contrived to set since she broke free of record company chains and went ‘DIY’ with ‘Yola’ almost 10 years ago.

With words about Brian Jones borrowed from Pete Townshend on the exquisite lament ‘Heaven Help Us’, and album cover art by Tim Staffell (whose departure from Smile was instrumental in the formation of Queen) ‘rock’ reference points abound.  But ‘If You Leave’ very much follows the pattern of Eleanor’s previous releases in focusing on matters of the heart, albeit with a twist that ‘neo-retro’ sums up nicely.  ****

Gig Review: SAINT VITUS/MOS GENERATOR – The Cathouse, Glasgow, 14 March 2013

Not sure what it says about me, but I do love a bit of doom/ stoner rock. This bill then looked like a good night with the godfathers of doom, Saint Vitus, paired with the excellent Mos Generator. Let the chugging riffs commence!

Just rounding off their set when I arrived were the night’s openers, Edinburgh doomsters, Atragon. I just managed to catch the band’s closing number but, judging by the cheers at the end of their set, their Sabbath style rock had gone down well.

Once Atragon had cleared, the Mos Generator guys wandered on stage to set up their gear and soundcheck. What was surprising though, and it’s something I haven’t witnessed before, was how the guys managed to turn the soundcheck into an intro of sorts which built up a buzz within the crowd. By the time frontman / guitarist Tony Reed launched into the first number they already had the crowd on their side and success was ensured. I don’t know if it was planned or not but it worked!

Playing a couple of older numbers and tracks from their latest album ‘Nomads’, released on the excellent Ripple Records, the band went down a storm. Heavy stoner rock with a groove the size of the Grand Canyon is the band’s forte.

Tony is a fantastic guitarist and singer who had a great rapport with the crowd. The rhythm section is comprised of Shawn Johnson on drums and Scooter Haslip on bass who laid down a huge bassline which shook you from your head to your feet.

By the time the guys reached the end of their all too brief set they had won over the crowd completely. As the last riffs of ‘This Is The Gift Of Nature’ rang out they were drowned out by the  loud cheers from the crowd. Job done gentlemen, can we have a longer set next time please?

With The Cathouse now at near capacity Saint Vitus took to the stage. Led on by the man with possibly the best facial hair in rock, Dave Chandler, the band kicked off with ’Blessed Night’ and the crowd responded with headbanging aplenty.

It was a bit of a false start though as frontman Wino Weinrich’s mike refused to play ball. It was a temporary glitch though that was soon dealt with and the rocking commenced once again.

Dave Chandler’s guitar work is the key to the Saint Vitus sound, a loud, detuned, fuzzed up wall of sound that carries you along on a sonic wave. Although the band have a great back catalogue the older numbers didn’t have it all their own way with a few songs aired from the band’s latest album ‘Lillie: F65’ which went down well.

It was the older numbers though that the faithful had turned out to hear and with the likes of ‘I Bleed Black’ and ‘War Is Our Destiny’ they got what they came for, first class doom metal. The set was rounded off with ‘Dying Inside’ and ‘Born Too Late’ which topped off a loud and heavy night perfectly and left a happy crowd calling for more . Ironic how doom metal can raise so many smiles !

Album review: ONWARD CHARIOTS – This Is My Confession

Ben Morss sure knows his stuff when it comes to music, and with his band, Onward Chariots, he shows off his immense knowledge in the form of the indie extravaganza “This Is My Confession”.

It’s hard to get into the album first time listening to it; the vocals sound uncomfortable if you’re not familiar with falsetto harmonies, so it takes a few listens before you can start to appreciate the music as a whole. Needless to say, most of the songs are of an acquired taste anyway, so if you don’t like the opening tracks, the likeliness is you won’t enjoy the rest of the album.

“This Is My Confession” doesn’t sit steady in one genre, but instead jumps in and out of them; it goes from the jazzy sounds in “Sisters and Brothers” and “I Just Met a Girl” to the quirky “Mama”, which sounds like it would fit nicely into a Wes Anderson film. Onward Chariots even opts for a post-punk style in “I Want Everything” followed by the vocal heavy and sweet sounding “How Could I?” – A strange mix that somehow works.

All in all, “This Is My Confession” is clearly trying to boast its brilliant musical achievements, but despite being technically musically complex, parts of the album don’t work together as well as hoped – which isn’t a surprise considering the vast range of musical genres that crossed over. It might be a bit much for a single record but there are some really strong tracks in the mix, and the last thing you can expect is a straight up indie record.

Album review: RAVEN BLACK NIGHT – Barbarian Winter

Metal Blade – Out Now.

I am sure that most of you would have gathered by now that 70s and 80s Rock/Metal music is definitely back in fashion. I mean, all you really have to do is to have a look at the roster of any record label and you will find the names of many spandex-clad bands adorning their site pages.

One such band is the Australian outfit Raven Black Night, whose self-released debut “Choose the Dark” was of such quality that led the US label Metal Blade Records to offer them a contract. Eight years after that release, the Adelaide-based Metal Warriors are about to bring out their second full-length album under the title “Barbarian Winter”.

On paper, Raven Black Night is one of the bands that tick all the right boxes for me. Being clearly influenced by the music of legends of Doom and Epic Metal, such as Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Manilla Road and Omen and sponsoring a deep-registered vocalist who does not hesitate to put his high screams to the test, should be enough to guarantee a top quality 80s sounding release, right?

That could have easily been the happy ending of this story, providing that these lads did not have to face their strongest enemy: themselves. While some compositions are of the utmost quality, there are quite a few moments when the band seems to lack quality control and by that I mean their ability to provide variety in compositions, as well as space to breathe, and not letting them get bogged down and lack direction.

The first fifteen or so minutes of the album contain some of the strongest material on offer, starting with the Manilla Road sounding riffs of “Fire In Your Eyes” – a song whose main melody will stick with you for a long time.

Less impressive but quite decent, “Morbid Gladiator” is a Doom-influenced, riff-based composition that will make its best to get you ready for the duet “Mystery Woman”/ “Fallen Angel” – songs whose vocal harmonies may be sung by a male artists but which, nevertheless, sound terribly reminiscent of those used by Farida ‘The Mouth of Satan’ Lemouchi of The Devil’s Blood fame.

It is at that very point when things start to go wrong for this album! “Black Queen” features some interesting individual themes but lacks coherence, “If You Choose The Dark” is enjoyable but lacks urgency, “Warriors Call” is an unnecessary eleven second vocal narrative and as for the same-titled “Bavarian Winter”: while its opening section featuring a Candlemass-influenced opening riff makes it a mouth-watering offering, the remaining half is based on an out of place up-tempo theme featuring…Death Metal growls…!

If the album was to finish right here, my rating would have been fairly low, however, the band seems to regain their senses and offer a decent ending instead. “Changes” may not be the most inspiring of Black Sabbath covers ever recorded, but the guitar harmonies involved are pretty decent indeed, “Lips Of Desire” bears some top quality melodies and “Nocturnal Birth”, a song operating in a style and tempo similar to that of Sabbath’s all time classic “Planet Caravan, is the absolute highlight of the album.

“Angel With A Broken Wing” may initially come across as a fairly bland offering but its straight-forward melodies and few hidden surprises towards the end make it much more appealing after a few good spins.

If I am to be very honest with you, listening carefully to “Barbarian Winter”  left me both annoyed and somewhat disappointed with the members of  Raven Black Night.

There are moments in this album when the spirit of 80s Doom/Classic Metal is both revived and celebrated, however, there are also moments when exaggerated performances, especially by the band’s vocalist, leads to the end result sounding both kitsch and out of control.

I am sure that these are capable of releasing an album worthy of carrying the title of an ‘underground classic’ but “Barbarian Winter” is certainly not the one – still, it is a decent effort.

Album review: ORCHID – Wizard Of War

Nuclear Blast – Out Now.

If, as I really hope, you are frequent visitors of our album reviews page you will remember that back in January, I was quite generous when rating “Heretic” – the four track E.P of the Sabbath-influenced San Francisco Rockers Orchid. Since then, I have been living in anticipation of the band’s upcoming studio album so I was understandably over the moon when I realised that new music related to this band was uploaded onto my account by Nuclear Blast records.

Instead, however, of the full length promised, the quartet and its label has decided to delay my ‘suffering’ by releasing what has been quite appropriately described as a ‘teaser’ – a three track 10’’ vinyl E.P entitled “Wizard Of War”.

Just as its predecessor, “Wizard Of War” indulges in some serious Sabbath worship, but does so in an inspired and refreshing fashion. The first composition on offer is the same-titled “Wizard Of War” –a bombastic tune whose groovy bass lines and heavy-as-hell riff will bring shivers down the spine of all Heavy Doom fans around the globe.

Similarly to Ozzy, Theo Mindell is not the most technically-disciplined singer around but has the swagger and attitude needed to make a classic 70s composition like “Demon’s Eyes” shine through. Though I truly enjoyed both those tracks, my heart was stolen by the six minute opus “Albatross” – a song originally featured in the band’s debut studio album “Capricorn”.

Working at a slow tempo and featuring bass harmonies and guitar leads reminiscent of Sabbath’s magnum opus “Planet Caravan”, this is one of the most addictive moody tracks that you will get to listen to by any band this young in age.

Though initially disappointed and somewhat annoyed by this classic case of promotional trickery on the part of Nuclear Blast, it was not long before I found my mood towards this three track release completely changing and that is solely on the strength of the material on offer.

I was hooked on Orchid long before this E.P came together and chances are that I will continue to be under their spell long after they fall into obscurity with the general public so the question here is: do I really need to add this to my record collection? Well, I have to admit that the answer to that question is a resounding “yes”! Now, can we please stop all this nonsense and have the band’s second full length album out, pronto?

Album review: THE BIG TEUTONIC FOUR – The Big Teutonic Four E.P

Nuclear Blast – Out Now.

Ask a hundred Thrashers to name the most important Thrash Metal bands in the world and you are guaranteed to have the vast majority say, “That has to be the Big Four” referring, of course, to the likes of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax.

While posters of the above-mentioned bands had adorned my bedroom walls during my adolescence and their albums hold a prominent position in my record collection, my heart was always pounding just a little bit faster to the sound of any well-oiled German Thrash Metal machine!

Well, it looks like Nuclear Blast and I share the same sentiments on this issue, as a suggested by the release of a covers EP cleverly and appropriately entitled “The Big Teutonic Four” – an E.P that features two Motorhead and two Iron Maiden covers by the likes of Sodom, Destruction, Kreator and Tankard, respectively.

I don’t know what Kreator, my personal favourite Thrash Metal band of all time, were thinking when choosing to cover Iron Maiden’s classic opus “The Number Of The Beast” as the song’s intricate arrangements and vocal melodies would simply deem this endeavour impossible for most bands out there.Even though they opted against using Maiden’s trademark intro and Mille’s vocals never managed to reach Dickinson’s high register, the end result, though not greatly impressive, is still pretty decent indeed.

Sodom, on the other hand, must have felt right at home when covering “Ace Of Spades”. Using their well-known Punk-infused charm to the maximum, Tom Angelripper and co simply nailed this classic by infusing even more passion and energy into the proceedings.

Not far behind in terms of approach, Schmier’s Destruction offer an equally powerful rendition of  Motorhead’s less advertised classic “The Hammer”, leaving Tankard in the same unenviable position – trying to recreate Maiden’s trademark twin guitar melodies in a Thrash Metal environment, this time by attempting to cover the amazing “The Prisoner” with sadly limited success.

Ok, so what is the point of having these German Thrash Metal legends release a four-track E.P of classic covers, one might ask?

Well, apart from tempting Thrash Metal enthusiasts to part with some hard-earned cash it is a clever way of promoting this year’s Beastival – a festival which will host the first ever appearance of these bands on the same stage since their inception.

If, like me, you live and breathe all things Thrash you will need no prompting in acquiring a copy of this enjoyable effort. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a way to introduce yourself to the music of these legendary outfits then this E.P is certainly not the right way to go about things.

Album review: BIG BIG TRAIN – English Electric – Part Two

GEP www.bigbigtrain.com

Following hot on the heels of ‘English Electric – Part One’ Big Big Train release the second part and this has high expectations, as its predecessor was runner-up in the ‘Prog’ magazine’s ‘Reader’s Poll’, it won prog website DPRP’s album of the year and more importantly made year end ‘best of’ too!  Does it match the first part? Just about and I am sure come the year end it will be there. The one thing I miss on this album is a nice wistful piece of folk whimsy like ‘Hedgerow’ of ‘Part One’ but then this is progressive music and the band have explored some new areas.

The song of the album has to be the ode to the disappeared shipyard ‘Swan Hunter’. This is such a lovely piece of music from the melodious vocals of David Longdon through to the brass section and the gentle, yet distinctive guitar playing of Dave Gregory.

Hats off to any band that kick off an album with a fourteen minutes plus epic ‘East Coast Racer’. The sound and feel of the music makes you feel you are on the train shovelling in the coal or sitting as a passenger.

It’s not all trains and lost industrial landscapes though as ‘Leopards’ is a song about a couple meeting up again several years after they parted and seeing if they can start back again. This is a strength of the band as this song is not prog sounding, maybe bar the Yes like harmony vocals and would appeal to listeners put off by a ‘prog’ tag on a band’s music.

‘The Permanent Way’ is the band’s tribute to the working countryside and if you don’t find the chorus uplifting you need to reassess your musical ears! The Tangent’s Andy Tillison guests on organ on this one and his solo comes midway through the song lending a 70’s feel to the proceedings. Danny Manners piano playing is a key part of the song drifting in and out as the song ebbs and flows. Another fine piece of guitar playing by Dave Gregory as well. ‘Curator Of Butterflies’ sees the band in a gentler mode with David Longdon’s vocals taking centre stage.

They have gone and done it again, an amazing musical journey from start to finish. Big Big Train should be on any prog rock fan’s shopping list and anyone for that matter who enjoys an album with a good musical variety and a healthy dose of nostalgia. Another contender for those of Album of the Year lists.

Gig review: DAN REED – O2 Academy,Liverpool,13 March 2013

What’s not to like about Dan Reed?  Great songs, warmth, and a humility sometimes lacking in other performers.  We first caught Dan’s quiet UK renaissance back in 2009 when he took his acoustic guitar around smaller venues, always connecting with his audience via his fund of stories, his serenity, and his heritage.

Little by little, that renaissance was further fuelled by an excellent album (‘Coming Up For Air’) and further touring, including an appearance at Download.

Tonight he’s edging towards the end of a 10-day tour playing mainly on the Academy circuit.  Whilst you can’t really fault tonight’s show (the sound and lights are surprisingly good), Dan would just as easily appeal to the coffee and comfy chair set in slightly more salubrious surroundings.

Dan Reed - Liverpool, 13 March 2013

With his band in tow again this time, including trusty guitarist and album collaborator Rob Daiker, this was another masterclass in a well paced and well populated setlist.  With sufficient nod to his past we luxuriated in several tracks from his new album ‘Signal Fire’.

There were of course standouts and the old stagers amongst us revelled in ‘Rainbow Child’ and ‘I’m So Sorry’ whilst there was a particularly awesome ‘Get To You’.  This was a gradually building funk workout which drew out the best from the band including bassist Karl Sweeney who was on home turf.

Dan Reed - Liverpool, 13 March 2013

If the classic Dan Reed Network stuff always sounds fantastic, even if less frenetic than back in the day, it was really a highlight amongst highlights.  The latest songs are in their own way just as interesting and absorbing.  So tracks like ‘ Signal Fire’, ‘All I Need Is You’, and ‘Only Love’ (tonight complete with “exotic” dancer) always tug at the emotional heart strings with their uplifting choruses and thoughtful lyrics, whilst more depth is found in songs like the darker ‘Indestructible’.

The truth is, in a different age, many of these songs would be staples on daytime radio.  It is even a challenge these days to get punters to gigs.  The Dan Reed Network were popular in the UK but remained a relatively short-lived phenomenon and no doubt only the cognoscente are enticed out these days.

Dan Reed - Liverpool, 13 March 2013

But it would be a great shame if Dan didn’t widen his audience in spite of the evident market fragmentation that affects artists currently and the butterfly mentality of many record buyers.

Dan’s star will continue to rise later this year when he plays a one-off festival gig (www.enchantedfestival.co.uk) with his Network cohorts after a successful try-out in the USA on New Year’s Eve.  He also mentioned tonight the prospect of more DRN gigs in 2014.

But acoustic or electric, pared-down or ramped up, Dan Reed shows how it should be done: with grace, humility and quality craftsmanship. A timely reminder of proper music.

Album review: ALVIN LEE – The Best Of

Repertoire Records (2012)

This album has been brought into sharp focus by the sad loss of Alvin Lee. The Woodstock guitar hero seemed to be more affected than most by the prevailing sweep of punk and new wave in the late 70’s. And while he accrued a solid body of solo work, he never seemed to settle on any particular direction until around 1994 and the much better ‘Keep On Rockin’ album.  The latter contributes 7 tracks to this compilation and sounds like a solo career high.

His initial solo work was in the company of gospel vocalist Mylon Lefevre and was recorded while he was still in TYA. The all star line-up included George Harrison who two decades later was to feature again in Alvin’s recording career on ‘Zoom’ and ‘Keep On Rockin’.

‘The Best of Alvin Lee’ pulls together several different line-ups from over 30 years and constructs a coherent whole based round an impressive sequential flow

The double CD opens with 3 tracks from ‘Keep On Rockin’. The title track has a pulsating groove while the more laid back ‘My Baby’s Come Back To Me’ features an acoustic wash with harmony singing. Its probably the closest Alvin gets to the concept of restraint.

He revels on the jump blues of ‘Boogie All Day’ and you can’t help but wonder why he never made peace with himself as a rocker until the late career ‘In Tennessee’, when he played with his hero Scotty Moore. He also rocks out on ‘Rock & Roll Girls’, with a modicum of taste and let’s the rhythm section swing.

Chronologically speaking, there’s a sudden switch back to the early 90’s with the Knopfler sounding ‘Lost in Love’, which finds Alvin looking for a new context for his playing. His guitar is melded with prominent synth lines, in an update of the TYA layered sound.

The live big band arrangement of ‘I’m Writing You A Letter’ comes from the 1974 ‘In Flight’ album and it’s a gem, showing that he was capable of so much more than speed shredding.

The acoustic and soprano coloured ‘Time & Space’ eloquently lives up to its name and is a distant cousin of the beautifully conceived ‘Road To Freedom’. Mylon LeFevre also adds a west coast sounding vocal on the George Harrison single ‘So Sad (No Love Of His Own)’ to offset the Harrison/Lee guitar axis.

The duo also spark on ‘The Bluest Blues’, one of Alvin’s best ever blues ballads and he makes a good fist of The Beatles ‘I Want You (She’s So Heavy)’ , while ‘Long Legs’ starts as a slow building drone and evolves into a substantial groove as Alvin constructs a Dave Gilmour style solo.

Thereafter, ‘Ridin’ Truckin’ sounds like an early Doobie Brothers outtake and ‘Can’t Stop’ places the emphasis on song structure with an effective repeated hook. ‘Ride On Cowboy’ also features the amazing Mick Hawksworth on fretless bass, as Alvin busies himself in his favoured power trio format.

The 30 tracks ultimately add to the frustration of what might have been, on a thoughtfully compiled double album that showcases a guitar giant of his era.

Album review: CORB LUND – Cabin Fever

New West Records

This album slipped through the net but roots fans should still check it out. Canadian country singer Corb Lund’s ‘Cabin Fever’ is a left field album with a difference.  It’s is full of wry, observational, insightful and occasionally humorous songs that draw on cowboy traditions, but are occasional extended to mirror the contemporary city/prairie divide.

Corb is perhaps best regarded as a post-modern cowboy, who saves his best observation for his web site when says; ‘The reality is we don’t live in that world anymore – yet the cowboys were kind of punk rockers in their day.”

Mixing introspection with natural song craft, Corb holed up in a cabin with time and drink on his hands – hence the album title – to search for meaning in his life, via cowboy narratives with a broader perspective than you might imagine.

Appearances are frequently deceptive on an album that levers you in on the opening ‘Getting Down On The Mountain’.  An acoustic guitar and grungy bass underpins some wry lyrics about the social consequences of diminishing resources, in this case oil; ‘I think I see a rip in the social fabric, brother can you pass the amo’. It’s closely followed by the bluesy stomp of ‘Gravedigger’ and a Hayes Carll co-write and biblical road trip ‘Bible On The Dash’.

A big tremolo figure ushers in a country tinged love song ‘September’ that mirrors his cowboy/city background. The brief semi yodel is almost an emotive paean to his own experiences, as well as a fast disappearing lifestyle. He adds a far more expansive yodel on cleverly crafted ‘Priceless Antique Pistol Shoots Startled Owner’, but then surprises you with some urbane rockabilly on ‘The Gothest Girl I Can’, which is a sister track to the rocking biker song ‘Mein Deutsches Motorrad’; ‘I’m gonna get the gothest girl I can, Black lips and Betty Page bangs. Horned rimmed glasses and an ass that‘ll pass for a glimpse of the promised land.’

Corb Lund shifts between moods and feelings in the same way that he swaps literal meaning for irony and metaphor. He pops up with the wistful and ambivalently titled ‘One Left In The Chamber’ and he squeezes every last nuance from his songs on the stripped down ‘Cabin Side’ of disc 2. The self explanatory, pedal steel and twang led ‘Drink Like You Mean It’ is also reprised with a plucked banjo.

No country rocker would be complete without some western wing and he duly delivers on the humorous ‘Cows Around’; ‘Everything is better with some cows around. Living in town sometimes brings me down. You won’t know what you’re missing till you hear that sound. May you always have cows around’. He even adds some faux Elvis phrasing to list the different types of cows.

‘Cabin Fever’ has real substance, but you suspect that that the Canadian singer- songwriter might find it difficult to reach a potentially wider audience beyond die-hard country fans.  *** (3/5)

Album review: MAN THE MACHETES – Idiokrati

Indie Recordings – Out Now.

Indie Recordings in a Norwegian Label with an eye for all things unusual and unique-sounding. Want me to throw a few names at you? How about Borknagar, Vreid, Cult Of Luna and Wardruna– all bands that, as a result of the label’s strong support, have been featured on the pages of many prestigious music-related magazines in recent times.

Well, the hunt for the next unique band seems to still be on, as suggested by the label’s decision to offer a contract to Man The Machetes – a band whose musical affiliations do not lie with any specific genre but which is instead happy to shamelessly flirt with Punk, Rock n’Roll and Metal in equal measure. These five Norwegians have just released their debut album “Idiokrati”.

Rock n’Roll groovy riffs in a Metal composition are a winning combination and so I approached these ten compositions full of expectation. The end result? Strangely enough, even though Man The Machetes managed to blend these varied elements in the way I was hoping they would, the end result was not as impressive as it ought to have been. Is that possible?

It is indeed, when what you have achieved is to create ten compositions that, simply put, sound pretty much like the same song being repeated over and over again. It is very sad, considering the top quality sound and amazing groove achieved by the guitar duet Erlend N.Saetern/Morten D.Carlsson and the powerful drum beats, courtesy of Mr. Per Christian Holm who sounds like he has destroyed at least three drum kits during the recording of this album.

Do not feel ashamed if you feel like you have been swept away by the sheer power of the opening rhythmical riff of “Sluk Det Ratt” as this, I am sure, will happen to most listeners. These same people will also find the up-tempo theme of “Sjelsvrengt” quite to their liking but it is at this stage that the first dark clouds begin to gather. Though energetic and catchy, songs like “Mageplask”, “Slagen”, “Neo-Cowboy” and “Karma A Brenne” sound like they are the end result of the same few ideas simply re-shuffled to produce the necessary numbers while “Makteslose” goes by fairly unnoticed.

Christofer Iversen’s scream/brutal vocals somehow manage to shine through in the heavy-as-hell groove of “Deltidsidiot” but the same cannot be said for either “Sudan” or its follow-up “Hjemkomst” which concludes the proceedings.

On the one hand I feel somewhat sorry not giving a high rating to a band that in its debut release has come up with such an interesting style and powerful sound, but the truth of the matter is that “Idiokrati” simply failed to fulfil its true potential.

Nevertheless, the signs so far are pretty encouraging and something tells me that it will not be too long before Man The Machetes reach a status similar to that held by the majority of their label mates. The next step is very crucial indeed – let us hope that it will be the right one!

Album Review: SPIN DOCTORS – If The River Was Whiskey

Ruf Records [06.05.13]

Given the Spin Doctors penchant for funky rhythms and their early 90’s Hendrix meets Parliament style jamming, the idea of a blues album isn’t necessarily as incredulous as it might sound.

The band paid their blues dues in the late 80’s New York blues clubs and they were known for stretching genres and jamming with like minded souls. But it’s one thing to revert to your roots and quite another to play the blues with conviction. Happily the Spin Doctors manage to re-connect with the genre on their own terms and this CD is as much a signature Spin Doctors album as it is a blues album.

There’s a down to the bone, dirt in the tracks feel, punctuated by barbed wire guitar solos, eclectic lyrics, funky rhythms, loose limbed grooves and Chris Barron’s unique vocals. If there’s a downside, it’s simply that the album probably lacks a little bit of feel.

The band certainly connect on a visceral level, but perhaps only ‘Sweetest Portion’ – written a long time ago when they were finding their feet – makes the kind of emotional connection that ultimately nails a blues album. Barron’s Dylan style phrasing on some heartfelt lyrics gives the track real presence.

‘If The River Was Whiskey’ is an original take on the blues by a video generation band. It’s a bustling, organic and eclectic effort that is recorded in an old school way. At times it all teeters on the brink of collapse, but they find their equilibrium through some inspired moments.

The band lay down a marker on the opening Mississippi backwoods feel of ‘Some Other Man Instead’. The smoking groove is anchored by Aaron Comess’s shuffle- drum pattern, coloured by the Eric Schenkman’s conversational guitar parts and shaped by Chris Barron’s unique vocal performance.

You get the feeling that while the rhythm section and vocalist are quite happy to slip into a blues mode, this album represents an opportunity for guitarist Eric Schenkman to shine. He stars on two raw and rough cut solos on the humorous ‘Traction Blues’. The stuttering, staccato bursts evoke the spontaneity of the younger Buddy Guy. It’s edgy and exciting, though you are not always sure where he is going.

Chris Barron’s Chris Duarte style phrasing is repeated on the closing ‘What My Love’ and the title track nails a Spartan sound, with  a Hound Dog Taylor meets Al ‘Blind Owl’ Wilson feel.  The recycled blues metaphors of ‘About A Train’ are enunciated by Chris’s exaggerated diction and an extended swoop that emulates an instrument. The steam train outro is priceless and the track envelops you with its ragged groove and banishes any doubts about the band tackling the blues.

‘The Drop’ could actually have come from one of their previous albums and ‘So Bad’ is born of a contrasting light percussive touch and dark subject matter, before they finally rock out on ‘What My Love’.

The Spin Doctors’ idiosyncratic take on the blues might not convert the doubters but there’s plenty here worth revisiting.  **** (4/5)

Album review: BLACK – Wonderful Life

Universal (Released 15th April 2013)

Black’s ‘Wonderful Life’ was originally released back in 1987 (this reissue is the CD version that had fifteen songs, the vinyl version only featured ten songs) and of course the title track was a hit single, along with ‘Sweetest Smile’. The re-issue adds a second disc of b-sides and that staple of the 80’s, the 12” mix.

Black is singer/songwriter Colin Vearncombe and he still records and tours now, albeit under his own name. Although on this album Dave Dix plays a pivotal role in adding the synths, keys and programming so important in backing the vocals. The original album features the aforementioned title track, a song so understated in its melody yet such an unforgettable tune. His vocal is melodious and a joy to hear on a song like ‘Everything Is Coming Up Roses’.

The jazzy pop of ‘I’m Not Afraid’ can sound a little dated but then music is of a time and place. ‘Sweetest Smile’ sounds great even now, with its swirling Vangelis like synths, sultry sax and another 80’s staple the fretless bass.

The bonus disc adds the original version of ‘Wonderful Life’ and its 12” version which was released as a limited release on Ugly Man records. There is not a massive difference in the versions, mainly in the sound. B-side ‘My Lover’ and ‘Life Calls’ are very good indeed and could have made the original album, perhaps instead of ‘Finder’ a song that for some reason has me hitting the skip button!

Nice little re-issue from Universal here of a classic 80’s album that appeals to fans of pop and of course fans who will be keen to have the second disc.

Quick Plays: ROCKY SHADE’S WILDSIDE RIOT, CYANIDE 4

ROCKY SHADE’S WILDSIDE RIOT  – No Second Take

Livewire/Cargo

Formed in 2010 by former Wrathchild UK front man Rocky Shades, Wildside Riot are best described as a having a hard rock sound somewhere between the light end of NWOBHM and the modern crop of sleaze bands.

Live the band put on a decent show, as witnessed at 2012’s Hard Rock Hell festival, where the band played at eleven in the morning and put on a show most bands would be proud of performing at a more “traditional” time.

“No Second Take” is the band’s debut album and boasts highlights such as ”Wildside Riot”, “That’s What Sunday Mornings Are For”, “Angel On My Back”, “My Woman” and “Glitter Tramps” alongside ballad “Babe I Gotta Go”, opening track “All Hail The Wasted” and “Fukk ‘Em!”.

Not a bad debut album and it should keep the band busy for a year or two.

CYANIDE 4 – Every Day Is A Masquerade

Perris Records

Cyanide 4 look like every other band on the Sunset Strip in the late ‘80’s, the thing is, they were formed in 2008…in Greece. They look and sound authentic and clearly know their stuff as influences like early Crue, Poison, Vain, Ratt and even Pretty Boy Floyd can clearly be heard throughout debut album “Every Day Is A Masquerade”.

Opening with the energetic “Hide In The Shadow” the album’s highlights reflect the influences of the band- “Live The Life” has echoes of Vain, as does “F.F.L (Fresh Fucked look)”, whilst “Amesia” is Poison meets Pretty Boy Floyd. However, the album is no cheap mimic, “Illusion” is a big glam ballad, there is a superb guitar solo on “Anything For Fun” and “Parody” is certainly something Cyanide 4 are not. There is not a weak track amongst the 13 on the album and the remainder of the highlights include “Temptation Failed”, “Cyanide”, “Wasting My Time” and “Bad Love Parade”.

I have no doubt that being a Hollywood styled glam band in Greece  is no mean feat, but Cyanide 4 have already managed to open for the likes of The Scorpions, Crashdiet and W.A.S.P on home soil and judging by the standard of “Every Day Is A Masquerade”, I’d say the band could make a pretty big noise on mainland Europe too.

Quick Plays: ALASCA,JIMMY BREWER,CHRISTA COUTURE

Alasca - Actors & Liars

ALASCA Actors & Liars (IRL)

AlascA are a four piece based near Amsterdam consisting of Frank Bond (vocals, guitars, bass) , William Bond (harmonies, keys), Ferdinand Jonk (harmonies, banjo, 12-string) and Louis van Sinderen).

Endorsed as ‘magical’ by fellow countryman and legend Jan Akkerman, and produced by Grammy award winning engineer and producer Alan Branch (U2, Jeff Beck, Yusuf Islam, Blur, Nine Inch Nails) their debut album ‘Actors & Liars’ peaked at #9 in the Dutch charts the week after release and stayed in the top 50 for a further six weeks.

And it’s not difficult to see why it’s received such acclaim at home – eminently listenable, it’s impeccably played, sung and produced, skipping effortlessly from intimate singer songwriter numbers to bombastic rock infused folk.

But at heart it’s very fine indie-folk – fresh and vibrant with glorious harmonies, atmospheric and uplifting.  Be that as it may, an absence of an obvious pigeon hole sadly makes it difficult to see ‘Actors & Liars’ as a vehicle for a major breakthrough beyond their home shores.  Nevertheless, it’s a glistening debut.  ***

Jimmy Brewer - As Time Stands Still

JIMMY BREWER As Time Stands Still

One of the chosen artists to represent their home town on Joan Armatrading’s 2012 UK tour, Jimmy Brewer is no typical acoustic troubadour.

His debut release is an eclectic collection of 12 diverse songs written over the past year and a half and mostly recorded in a dairy farm in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.  The idea was to create an album if ups and downs, with a two-sided feel.

Secluded and free of distractions the result is a mournful set but quite why the current singer songwriter genre thinks it’s ‘cool’ to croon in a lazy sleepwalking drawl is a mystery.  Thankfully, Brewer merely demonstrates he’s as capable as the rest in that department and for the most part sets his stall out as an engaging story teller.

Perhaps not the most technically gifted of singers and covering a wide variety of genres, his witty observational humour and humble approach will strike a chord with many listeners and work well in the live environment.  Fragile and confessional, ‘As Time Stands Still’ is a calling card.  Whether he can take it to the next level will be in the lap of the Gods.  ***

Christa Couture - The Living Record

CHRISTA COUTURE The Living Record (One Foot Tapping Records)

Personal tragedies have been the focus of Christa Couture’s previous releases – in particular her last album ‘The Wedding Singer and the Undertaker’ (2008).

Since then life’s continued to be cruel, but the Vancouver based singer songwriter has found a new optimism in recording her latest release ‘The Living Record’.  Heartbreak, in the form of an ended affair is turned into bittersweet memories on ‘Goof Bayou’, while the infectious ‘Pussycat Pussycat’ recalls memories of carefree days in London 10 years ago.

With a vulnerable vocal style not a zillion miles removed from that of Tori Amos, and an eclectic range of styles – from country, folk, Cajun and roots to country rock – it’s a beautifully orchestrated and intimate set that fans of female singer songwriters who sit just left of centre – the likes of Amos, Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette – would be well advised to explore  ***

Album review: THE WONDERSTUFF – Oh No It’s…The Wonderstuff

The Wonder Stuff - Oh No It's...

IRL (Released 25.03.13)

This new album adds a second disc of cover versions, ‘The Midlands With Love’, where the Wonderstuff cover a number of songs from fellow Midlands based artists.

Band leader Miles Hunt said this album would be a return to what the band do best and what the fans wanted, namely lots of uptempo songs with sing-a-long choruses. They have certainly achieved that as songs like ‘Clear Through The Years’, ‘From The Midlands With Love’ and their superb anthem of a single ‘Oh No!’ prove. If there is one drawback of the band for me is that some songs can  sound a little to similar and lack that distinctive chorus that the band are so good at.

Special mention to the fiddle playing of Erica Nokalls, who drives the faster songs along at a belting pace. The album also marks the recording debut of former Pop Will Eat Itself (PWEI) drummer Fuzz Townsend and he gives a steady beat to drive the good ship Wonderstuff along nicely.

The covers disc is for the most part a real hit. Slade’s ‘Far Away’ lends itself well to a fiddle driven tune and Duran Duran’s ‘Planet Earth’ sounds better than the original! The Move’s hit ‘Blackberry Way’ is another fine cover. UB40′s ‘One In Ten’ fares less well though.

Fans of the band will love this album, particularly as it has been some time since a full studio album. The covers disc is a real bonus and their covers of say Slade or Duran Duran would slot nicely into daytime radio airplay or being bang up to date a Spotify playlist!

Album review: SEBASTIAN BACH – ABachalypse Now

Frontiers www.frontiers.it

Sebastian Bach is about to release the double live CD and DVD extravaganza that is “ABachalypse Now”. To get it out of the way first, there are not many bands who can replace such a distinct sounding front man and get away with it, Van Halen being the only obvious exception, and as Bach’s former band Skid Row have found- it’s the recognisable sound of the vocals that appeals to most fans. Can you imagine going to see, let’s say, Bon Jovi and finding, for example, Gary Cherone fronting the band- whilst JBJ is touring himself- who would you rather pay to see?

Now, I have seen the Bach-less Skid Row and I have seen his own solo band, in fact I have seen them twice on this tour, and it’s fair to say that whilst Skid Row now remind me of a tribute band, Seb’s band could be the real deal.

New live CD “ABachalypse Now” features 2 live sets, the first from France’s 2012 Hellfest Festival and the second from  Live at Nokia, Los Angeles.  Whether you like him or not, there is no denying the command Bach holds over an audience and on the first disc he speaks to them in French between some of the songs and you get the feeling that this is going down rather well as the crowd is audibly loving his set. That set mixing Skid Row classics such as “Here I Am”, “Piece of Me”, “Big Guns”, “Monkey Business”, “18 & Life” and “I Remember You” with newer solo tracks like “Kicking & Screaming”, “Tunnelvision” and “American Metalhead”- the big one however, it is safe to say, is set closer “Youth Gone Wild”.

The second disc contains a shorter but no less impressive gig from Los Angeles.  Bach is joined onstage by band members Nick Sterling and Johnny Chromatic on guitar, bassist Jason Rappise and on drums Bobby Jarzombek- and it is this solid band that hands him the fire power to deliver a thundering set on both discs.

The DVD contains both shows in addition to the bands Graspop Festival in Belgium, also from 2012, as well as various backstage footage and videos for “Kicking & Screaming”, “TunnelVision” and “I’m Alive”.

With talk of a possible Skid Row reunion seeming to edge further away, I know where I’m putting my money.
