Album review: GREAT WHITE – 30 Years…Live From The Sunset Strip

Frontiers www.frontiers.it

It’s hard to believe that Great White are in the middle of celebrating their 30th Anniversary, 30 years that have seen both triumph and tragedy for the band, but still finds them sounding in top form. Recorded at Hollywood’s Key Club last March, this live CD is accompanied by a bonus DVD has just been released and is well worth a listen.

The band was rejuvenated by the addition of vocalist Robert Ilous for last year’s “Elation” album and, whilst vocal comparisons will inevitably be made with former front man Jack Russell, I can confirm that Great White sound as good live now as they always have. With their trademark blues drenched rock n roll, the band tear through 11 songs from their back catalogue and with just 5 of those tracks coming in at under 6 minutes- and even then, only just, there is some great musical interplay here.

From a bombastic “Face The Day”, a slow burning “House of Broken Love“ and to “Mista Bone”, complete with a blues jam intro, there is a good feel of nostalgia going on here. “The Big Goodbye” and “Rock Me” also sound great but it is “Back To The Rhythm”, “Lady Red Light”, the 11 minute “Can’t Shake It” and, of course,  the band’s well know and much loved rendition of “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” that not only please the audience, but remind listeners what a great band Great White are.

Book review: ’50 Years – The Rolling Stones, Views from The Inside, Views from The Outside’ by Hanspeter Kunzler

’50 Years – The Rolling Stones, Views from The Inside, Views from The Outside’ by Hanspeter Kunzler (eBook)

Published by Hanspeter Kunzler

I am a massive fan of The Rolling Stones, to the point where I can be quiet anal about which books I read about the band- and this new eBook from Hanspeter Kunzler is one of the most comprehensive that I have ever read. Bringing together various previously published articles about the band, combining it with a social insight to what else was going on at the time as well as looking at what else was in the charts when  the band were releasing some of their biggest albums, albums which have also been reviewed anew for this book.

This first volume covers the first 25 years of the bands history, and if it was a physical book it would have been some volume. Whilst there was much fanfare over the band’s recent Anniversary shows, and several books were released to tie in with that- mainstream press almost seems to bypass the launch of eBooks, which is a shame as great ones like this will often fly under the radar.

Author Hanspeter Kunzler has stated in interview that European pop history became global history, and he is right, as The Rolling Stones are known in virtually every corner of the planet and have often been at the front of both musical and fashion changes, never more so than the 25 years covered in this book.

There is a second volume planned and each volume contains a staggering 1,000 pages. I feel at this point that I should issue a warning – you will not be able to put this book down for long so do plan to put some time aside as it’s gonna take you a while to read.

Gig Review: FM Album launch, 02 Academy, Islington, 6 March 2013

FM Album Launch - London, 6 March 2013

FM have taken took their time to follow up their well received comeback album Metropolis, but after celebrating 25 years of their classic ‘Indiscreet’‘ debut with live shows last year,  the finest melodic rock band forged on this side of the Atlantic are opening 2013 with a bang.

Two albums worth of new material is now ready for release, just ahead of a UK tour, and fans willing to pledge money, various assembled industry figures and the odd figure from other bands were invited to a unique early evening playback in the small room of the 02 Academy.

The band mingled freely while we got to hear a full playback first of Rockville, then of Rockville 2, which was initially funded via Pledge Music but now been released alongside the full album.

With the beer and chat flowing it was hard to concentrate in detail on the music and a full critical judgement will have to wait for a proper listen. However first impressions were that they were in the classic FM style, but with a diversity that bodes well for repeated listening with the likes of the slightly funky ‘Only Foolin’ and ‘High Cost of Loving’ making the biggest initial impact.

FM Album Launch - London, 6 March 2013

However the icing on the cake was a special half hour live set in the middle, and a full electric one rather than the acoustic show I had been led to believe. The invite only nature of the event seemed to relax the band and there was even more camaraderie evident on stage than usual.

For my part, hearing them open with Indiscreet’s AOR  classics ‘I Belong to the Night’ and ‘That Girl’ in a small club like this was bringing back memories of the days around 1986, when my brother and our other teenage friends used to rock out to them down the old Marquee and were convinced- sadly misguidedly- that they had the image and radio friendly tunes to follow Bon Jovi into the charts.

FM Album Launch - London, 6 March 2013

In Jim Kirkpatrick, FM have a guitarist perfectly suited to the old material and he and Steve Overland came together for some tasty twin lead guitar solos on the relatively rarely played ‘Hot Wired’, but it is Steve’s uniquely expressive and soulful vocals that will always be the  real trademark of FM, showed off to good effect on the bluesy ‘Closer to Heaven’.

After ‘Dangerous’, with its massive chorus and Jem Davis’ keys kicking in, had me wondering just how it was omitted from Indiscreet, another oldie in ‘Other Side of Midnight’, complete with their synchronised stage moves, ended the set.

While the live material was a great nostalgia trip and a lovely coda to the ‘Indiscreet 25’ tour, the real celebration tonight was to hear a band many of us thought were lost to music for good looking to the future and sounding so fresh doing so.

EP AND SINGLE ROUND UP – Damn Vandals, The Burning Of Rome, NG26, The Blueveils, Elysium

DAMN VANDALS – Kings Of Never

Sexy Beast ( Release Date – 18.03.13)

This is the latest single lifted from the Damn Vandals’ album ‘Done For Desire’ which was released at the tail end of 2012. The two tracks on offer here are distinctive indie rockers with a dark underbelly.

‘Kings Of Never’ is a fuzzed up, straight forward indie track whilst track two, ‘The Revenge Of Spider Toothy’, has an odd, off kilter melody running through it which ups the interest a bit.

Fairly standard indie fare then but not too bad.

THE BURNING OF ROME – Norman Bates

Surfdog  (Release date – 18.03.13)

The Burning Of Rome are a new outfit from San Diego who are about to release their first album and this track is the lead track to be released a week before the album finally sees the light.

This is a quirky track with a multi instrumental backing and a catchy melody line. It isn’t all sweetness and light though as there is a menacing mid section with a rabid vocal running under the music.

Overall this is an interesting number which bodes well for the full release

***1/2

NG26 – If We Fall Tonight

Glasstone Records (Release date – out now)

This is good, hard rock from deepest Derbyshire. NG26 have been around for 5 years and this is their latest single release. Driving hard rock is the name of the game here and the guys show they have lots of ability, the guitar work is especially impressive.

Hopefully this track will lead on to further releases as this is a band that deserves to be heard.

THE BLUEVEILS – Quiet Riot

Self Release (Release date – 25.03.13)

Rather disappointingly this is not a homage to the Kevin DuBrow fronted 80’s rockers. It is however a 3 track EP which will brighten your day with folk and country tinged indie rock.

The three tracks featured offer nothing new, but they are well written indie tracks that bring a bit of sunshine to an otherwise dull day. The band released another EP back in 2012 which I also reviewed and it was more of the same, proving that the guys are consistent in their quality control.

Sunny, fun and worth a spin.

David Wilson

ELYSIUM – In Valour

Self Release ( Release date – 13.05.13)

Hailing from Watford, nu metal noisemongers Elysium are about to unleash this, their debut EP, on an unsuspecting world. Throwing together elements of Lower Than Atlantis, A Day To Remember and Four Years Strong the guys put in an impressive and powerful display.

There are four tracks here which do conform to the usual nu metal rules of engagement.  The content and skill on show though is enough to lift this above the also rans in an overcrowded field. Best number is ‘Scars’ which kicks off with a Maiden style riff and contains some tasty guitar licks throughout.

This is a strong first release which shows a band with promise, let’s hope it gets a chance to blossom.

Album review: PAUL ROSE – Double Life

Paul Rose - Old House Blues Band

Mita Records [Release date 6/5/13] CD/Vinyl

The underlying concept of Paul Rose’s ‘Double Life’ is pictorially represented by the Old House Blues Club photo on the front of the CD. It’s a superbly conceived and brilliantly played homage to soul, funk and r&b, shot through with intense rock elements in the solos.  The album provides the Newcastle born guitar maestro and former Guitarist of the Year with a long overdue context for his massive talent.

Co-producer John Wooler gathered together the musicians and songs, and sourced the studio location, to cut a record full of delicately crafted highs with lashings of soul and plenty of subtle dynamics and guitar artistry

Recorded at the Hollywood Steakhouse – the venue is partly owned by Steve Lukather and is an A-list guitarist hang out – ‘Double Life’ is easily the best record of Paul’s career.

Everything about this cd has a bristling immediacy, born of a live in the studio feel and Paul’s array of intricate and incendiary solos that gives each track extra possibilities. And while all 4 guest vocalists impress with their respective ranges, it’s Paul’s conversational style of soloing that stands out. His blistering break on ‘Cold Sweat’ and outrageous solo on the Raffia Ford sung ‘Honey Hush’ draws on every facet of his natural ability to cement his signature sound.

Guest vocalist Sweet Pea Atkinson (Was Not Was) revisits Ben Latimore’s 1974 soul ballad ‘Let’s Straighten It Out’, and imbues it with an emotive performance that is matched by Rose shimmering tones and a clean sounding attack. Rose pours all his years of experience and technique into the solo to evoke the lyrics as integral part of the arrangement.

For a guy who made his name as a shredder, he’s a beacon of restraint on an album full of shifting tone colours. Former Stones vocalist Bernard Fowler tackles the Philly soul classic ‘Drowning In The Sea Of Love’, which brilliantly collides with Rose’s sudden uplifting shred. Only a perfunctory ending robs a great track of its true impact.

The same Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff  song-writing team provide another soul classic, ‘If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don’t Want To Be Right’, on which Sweet Pea provides a gritty vocal.

Former Ry Cooder vocalist Terry Evans adds light and shade with some deeply wrought phrasing on ‘Dark End Of The Street’, as Paul weaves his way in and out of the track. He bides his time, before delivering some supremely crafted volume swells and outer worldly tones to colour the song.

The power shuffle ‘Ball and Chain’ is another exercise in dynamics, reflecting the perfect combination of Sweet Pea’s best vocal performance and Paul’s own searing guitar break.  It’s also snapshot of Paul’s effortless ability, and the switch in tempo restores balance to the album’s sequencing.

The Terry Evans penned ‘Uphill Climb’ is another ripping shuffle that wracks up a musical tension beneath his soulful vocal. There’s only the briefest momentary pause before Paul unleashes a blistering volley of notes.

The band apparently only met on the first day of rehearsals and it’s the resulting freshness and apparent collective commitment that makes this such a rewarding album.

In lesser hands the closing ‘Stormy Monday’ blues might have been a low-key finish, but it’s transformed into an essential conversation between Sweet Pea and Paul’s enquiring solo. Paul pours all his know-how into blistering middle section, as part of another magnificent shred.

Years ago Paul would have thought nothing of cutting a whole album of mind bending solos, but ‘Double Life’ has a deeper remit. He wisely saves his best for last, with an angular gut-busting solo and some expressive squalls as Sweet Pea finishes with an eclectic outro.

‘Double Life’ explores the soulful end of the blues, with a funky, wrapped up tight feel. It’s a classy album with a wide musical horizon and it is unreservedly recommended. ***** (5/5)

Album review: WHITESNAKE: Made In Japan

Whitesnake - Made In Japan

Frontiers Records [Release date: 22.04.13] 2-CD/DVD, DVD and Blu-ray

The big question with Whitesnake in recent years is the quality of David Coverdale’s voice or lack of it.  In spite of vigorous reassurance that ‘the voice’ is intact – from Coverdale himself – it has been plainly obvious that things are amiss in the live arena.

Cue ‘Made In Japan’,  a live update ahead of the band’s arena tour in May with Journey and recorded in October 2011.  Do we really need another live release given Coverdale’s voice situation?  Should we not just return to ‘Live In The Shadow Of The Blues’ (2006) or even earlier, ‘Live In The Heart Of The City’ (1980)?

This succeeds as a document of the band’s live work in 2011-2 but that’s all.  More critical gig-goers will bemoan that recent sets have consisted of a lot of call and response (and the crowd helping on the chorus) and a lot of guitar – here personified on ‘Six String Showdown’ which is frankly awful grandstanding and takes up six minutes whilst Brian Tichy gets the seven minute ‘Drum Solo’  – barely bearable even if you were there soaking up the atmosphere.

Coverdale is best now on the less strenuous songs, so ‘Forevermore’ from the latest studio album just about works.

Overall, the guitar quotient is cranked up in the mix: no problem, Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach are two wonderful players.  The former’s thick tone connects with the bluesier sound of the ‘Snake canon and he takes centre stage whilst Beach is always a sonic match but more of a rock player if here somewhat subservient.

A bonus CD (not supplied for this review) includes sound check versions and several acoustic renditions including ‘Fare Thee Well’, ‘One Of These Days’ and ‘Tell Me How’ whilst the DVD/Blu-ray doesn’t deviate from the CD tracklisting but with a couple of bonus “fan videos”.

If you can accept a more crooning version of the Coverdale vocal and more backing vocal assistance – and maybe there isn’t anything wrong with that as long as there are no ‘David Cover-ups’  (I shall watch the DVD with interest) – this is a reasonable live souvenir.  Although it reminds us that Whitesnake are still pretty formidable in front of a baying audience regrettably it also reveals the ravages of time and the classic set-pieces like  ‘Fool For Your Loving’ and ‘Still Of the Night’ (both included here) have sounded much better. ***

Review by David Randall

David Randall presents ‘Assume The Position’ on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio every Sunday at 22:00 GMT.

Recorded live at their 2011 Loud Park Festival appearance in Japan, Whitesnake are about to release ‘Made In Japan’ on CD and deluxe edition with DVD. Featuring what may be the best Whitesnake line-up to date, and the with a set list made up of a hefty mix of old and new material.   I thought the call-to-arms ‘Tokyo, you can do it..’ might suggest David Coverdale can’t, however, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

Yes, the keys have been dropped to accommodate his voice these days, which gives the songs a heavier and more modern feel- but just have a listen to the vocal on the acoustic version of ‘Good To Be Bad’ and you will find that DC is still bang on the money.

‘Best Years’ is the perfect set opener and ‘Give Me All Your Love Tonight’ literally turns back the years, as does it’s guitar solo, ‘Steal Your Heart Away’ is reminiscent of Coverdale’s work with Jimmy Page in the mid-nineties whilst ‘Forevermore’ has a nice acoustic opening that gives way to a Led Zep style masterpiece.

‘Love Ain’t No Stranger’ sounds exactly like every time I have heard it live, ‘Fool For Your Loving’ is drop key heavy, ‘Here I Go Again’ is priceless and, of course, ‘Still Of The Night’ is a highlight – more than that, it is downright essential. ‘Love Will Set You Free’ is another great live track, as is ‘Is This Love’- how many songs do you need in one set with love in the title?!!

Brian Tichy gets a customary drum solo and he will sorely be missed on the band’s upcoming tour, although long time Whitesnake cohort Tommy Aldridge returns to the drum stool, and then there is ‘Six String Showdown’ a guitar dual between Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach.

The second disc is made up of eight tracks recorded in sound checks and acoustic versions, these include a great run through ‘Lay Down Your Love’, ‘Love Will Set You Free’, ‘Evil Ways’ and ‘Steal Your Heart Away’ plus the Rod Stewart like ‘Fare Thee Well’. Coverdale’s vocals on the acoustic versions of ‘Good To Be Bad’ and ‘Tell Me How’ are simply stunning and his banter with the band in the sound checks is brilliant- very funny and not at all staged.

Whitesnake tour the UK later this month and I for one cannot wait. Here’s a song for ya…  *****

Album Review: COVERED CALL – Impact

AOR Heaven (Released March 28th)

Been a few  years since Covered Call last raised their heads after an enjoyable debut album released back in 2009 on the now defunct Blistering Records. They have a new vocalist as well and a good addition at that in Goran Edman, along with bassist Andy Loos (Lion’s Share/Glory) joining permanently as well.

They crank out classy hard rock on ‘Hold On’ and ‘Live It Up’, the latter reminded me of 70′s pomp rockers Roadmaster for some reason. ‘Think About Old Times’ is made for radio and the chorus is blissful on the old ears. Goran Edman’s vocals on ‘Last Goodbye’ reminded me a little of Brian Howe and the song has that Howe-era Bad Company feel. The harmony vocals on the chorus are pure ELO, a good thing in my book.

Not sure who plays the Hammond and keys on the album deserves a pat on the back, as they add that extra topping to the music. Bizarrely for a melodic hard rock album there is not a  power ballad in sight!

They have upped their game adding Goran Edman and penning on the whole an album of melodic rock delights. Let’s hope they can get some momentum going with this release and get some live shows under their belts. In the meantime get this on your shopping list pronto.

Gig review: WILKO JOHNSON Koko, Camden, Wednesday 6th March 2013

There was never any doubt that this would be a life-affirming gig. Wilko Johnson has been a focused, intense and immersed performer for the best part of 40 years. The scope for mental or physical weakness was simply not on the agenda. If Wilko had detected any doubts about his ability to deliver a trademark blistering gig then he wouldn’t have turned up.

The gulf between the guitar-meister’s on-stage persona and his life away from the circuit has never been better emphasised than in the last few months. Wilko has been engagingly gracious, crushingly honest and revealingly open in interviews that mark a spiralling level of media interest in him. His diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer is one thing. His decision to refuse treatment and to go out in a blaze of activity is quite another. Contrast those interviews with his gigs since the news broke and you would be hard pushed to detect any note of sentimentality and where communication with the audience has been at its usual minimalist level.

In terms of the performance, this gig was no different from any of those he has served up at any point in his gnarled career. Wilko’s persona was all present and correct: frenetic stalking of the stage, eye-popping mad-man stares and Telecaster strafing of the audience. The standard of the musicianship was its usual dizzyingly high quality. Norman Watt-Roy and Dylan Howe gave Johnson all the space he needed and threw down some jaw-dropping interplay of their own.

But some things had changed: the size of the venue, the electric atmosphere and the quality of the sound. Koko is a stunning Victorian music hall of tiered balconies and boxes encased in an opulent gilt and red ceramic skin. The natural habitat of Wilko gigs is a sweaty pub or a tiny club where the furious nature of the high octane performance gives an intense experience. If some of the intimacy was – quite rightly – sacrificed here, it was easily compensated by a razor sharp, state of the art, decibel heavy PA that emphasised every simultaneous chop, lick and riff to magnificent effect.

Wilko has maintained the aggression and violence of those mould breaking mid-70’s Dr Feelgood cuts. ‘Roxette’ was so sharp you could feel your eyes watering, ‘Back In the Night’ delivered with more dangerous edge than an Alpine precipice. But the style has evolved too. There is less brutal riffage underpinning the straight r’n’b of ‘Going Back Home’ these days and instead a more complex rolling six-string rumble played with lighting fast fingers and unerring accuracy.

Mick Green of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates is cited by Wilko as his great influence and he has described learning to copy that style by slowing down singles to 33 1/3 rpm.  This under-estimates the unique qualities of Mr Johnson though. Alongside the trademark lead/rhythm sound that powered the searing  ‘She Does It Right’ and ‘Sneaking Suspicion’, we were treated to a subtle, haunting version of ‘Dr Dupree’ that had touches of Hawaiian guitar, swing and jazz, picked out in chiming, crystal clear salvoes, sliding over each other and competing for attention. No one else can do that. No one else sounds like that.

Long time fan, Alison Moyet (who looked and sounded fantastic) joined Wilko for an electric encore of ‘I Don’t Mind’ and ‘All Through The City’, from Dr Feelgood’s debut ‘Down By The Jetty’. For those who regret Wilko walking out so early on the Feelgoods, this was a welcome reminder of how good he is with a lead singer to bounce off and play to. Remember that cover shot from ‘Stupidity’?

‘Bye Bye Johnny’ has become the only vague nod to sentiment on this tour, with fans waving Wilko off stage and out of their lives at the end of the gig. Here the moment was lost in some welcome comic farce.  First the lead broke on his Stratocaster (strapped on specifically for this tune) and then a string snapped when he had reverted to his trusty Telecaster.

A second encore of ‘Twenty Yards Behind’ flashed by in a rare blaze of heavy blues brilliance. Then in triumph, in modesty, in magnificence and in vitality, Wilko departed.

Rising Stars: JONNY COLA & THE A-GRADES

JONNY COLA & THE A-GRADES release a new single,  ‘Straight To Video/Marlborough Road’ next month and play their first gig since Jonny Cola’s operation on March 22nd at the Buffalo Bar. If you like Mott the Hoople by way of Bowie and Pulp then read on…

What are you currently up to?

JONNY: We’re getting ready for our first gig since my operation – and actually our first in six months – on March 22nd at the Buffalo Bar with more London dates to follow over the next few months. Also we’re working on the last few tracks for our next album, which will be out later this year. Essentially, we’re doing our best to make up for lost time.

JEZ: Busy.

Brief history of the band…

JONNY: Mauro and I had been friends for years when we started playing together. I used to go and see him in his previous band and be struck by how great he looked on stage. Oh, and sounded, of course. I was a keyboardist in another band at the time but, when that broke up, I decided I wanted to give the frontman thing a go. Mauro was the first person I approached.

JEZ: Jonny, Mauro and I kind of bonded over our love of Hanoi Rocks and Josie & The Pussycats before I was in the band. Then at some point I ended up depping for Mauro and stayed on!

SIMON: I was initially asked to cover for two gigs they had booked, but I knew straightaway that I’d be staying! Jez joined when Mauro buggered off to South America for a bit, and Marco (who knew Jez) came to an audition and knew how to play ALL the songs, really well!

Jonny – how important was music and creating music in helping you recover from your operation?

JONNY: Playing with the band was one of the main things that kept me positive during the eight months between diagnosis and transplant. We didn’t play that many gigs because I found them so exhausting, especially once I was having dialysis, but the ones we did do will always stand out to me as triumphs over adversity and incredibly intense experiences. Since the op, I’ve mainly just been excited about the prospect of getting back on stage and getting things moving again. Very excited indeed..

The upcoming video for ‘Straight To Video/Marlborough Road’ is very good. Who came up with the visual ideas and does having your own video help spread the word on YouTube, which now seems to be the MTV of the current generation?

JONNY: Me, Jez and Heidi Heelz conceived and directed the videos. It’s the second time that the three of us have collaborated in this way and these are, ooh, the fifth and sixth A-Grades vids that Jez and I have made together. We think these are the best yet, but we would say that,
wouldn’t we.

JEZ: YouTube has become a great way to listen to music now since the quality has improved. People get to share music through YouTube on their Facebook walls, so it’s very important to have your music up there. Even if it’s just a still with the song playing… although we like making videos too much to have done that yet.

It has been a while since you last played live. What sort of set can fans expect at the gig on 22nd March? Are you a band that likes to put on a good stage show to accompany the good songs?

JEZ: An awesome set! We like to put on an awesome stage show to accompany the awesome songs!

MAURO: Yeah, you could say we’re “flamboyant” onstage (we like to pose and throw shapes anyway!). You have to think, “If I was in the crowd, would I find this worth watching?”. We’re generally quite demanding of what we want other acts to deliver, so we have to make sure we’re doing our bit! The set on the 22nd will feature some old classics and also some new tracks that’ll be on the next album…

How important is social media like Facebook, Twitter etc for the band in getting your music out there?

MAURO: Lord knows about Twitter, we’ve tried using Twitter and so far it’s almost completely incomprehensible to us. Facebook we’re on quite a bit, I guess it helps. Who knows how you do anything these days??

MARCO: I recently got hooked on Instagram, which I love… Tweeting next.

What have been the live highlights for you and why?

JONNY: I enjoyed that time in the basement in Soho when a number of Jägerbombs had been consumed beforehand. It was far from our greatest gig and there were probably only 20 people there, but it was good messy fun.

MAURO: Oh God that gig was well ropey. I remember the Lexington show we played (right before Cola was admitted to hospital) was pretty special, partly cos we just went bang-bang-bang with the set, short sharp shock-style, that always wins favour with me! (Anyone in the band will tell you I don’t like to FAFF AROUND). A couple of the shows we did when Cola was on dialysis – sometimes he’d literally come to do the gig straight from four hours of it – were also great, very intense.

MARCO: Ha! That Soho gig was amazing, sooo hot in that basement! And the ones Mauro is talking about were also great. And a couple of shows at the Windmill I remember as particularly good ones too.

SIMON: Playing the 100 Club on New Year’s Eve was pretty memorable for me.

Any good rock ‘n’ roll tales to tell…

JONNY: None that are printable without causing a great deal of trouble. Anyway, it’s good to preserve a bit of mystique innit.

MAURO: Ahem!

SIMON: Playing Supernormal festival was quite an experience! That’s festivals for you…

JEZ: I seem to remember, when we were playing in Glasgow, a punk rock disco in our hotel room with lashings of Buckfast. Or was it an Aerosmith disco…

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from music?

JONNY: Spare time? I’m sorry, I don’t understand the question.

MAURO & SIMON: Ha! Ditto

JEZ: More music!

Anything else to add and a message for your fans…

JONNY: When disaster strikes, play some rock ‘n’ roll.

News: CELEBRATED IRISH SINGER ELEANOR McEVOY’S TENTH STUDIO ALBUM INSPIRED BY BRIAN JONES FEATURE IN MAGAZINE

Renowned for her intimate, emotional and uplifting performances, celebrated Irish musician Eleanor McEvoy releases her tenth studio album, ‘If You Leave…’, on May 6th 2013.

The inspiration behind McEvoy’s new album came after reading a magazine feature that told the story about Brian Jones’ role in “bringing The Rolling Stones together and helping them pursue an authentic blues sound.” McEvoy said, “Whilst I was preparing this album, I read this wonderful feature in MOJO. It was the spark that started the fire, and I started revisting some classic 60s albums by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, stuff like that. Not only is there a wonderful simplicity, clarity and depth to the sound, it was a very lucky era, in which it was acceptable to be both innovative and very successful. I wouldn’t presume to emulate such great music, but let us say their creativity haunted our recording.”

For the sessions, McEvoy recruited the talents of Grammy award-winning songwriter Jimmy Smyth on guitar, keyboard player James Delaney (Chuck Berry, Clannad), bassists Paul Moore (Van Morrison) & Eoghan O’Neill (Chris Rea, Moving Hearts) and drummer Des Lacey (Katie Melua), with special guests Brian Connor on piano and David Agnew on oboe.

McEvoy is also joined by guest vocalist Mary Coughlan, Gemma Hayes and Hermione Hennessy with Sharon Shannon on the accordion for the song ‘Secret of Living’. The song was written especially by McEvoy for a run of nine sell-out shows at The Olympia in Dublin to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the album ‘A Woman’s Heart’, the third biggest-selling album in Irish chart history which helped to establish McEvoy as a star in her home country. McEvoy said, “I thought I should write a song for all the performers who were going to be featured in the show, something like The Outlaws or The Traveling Wilburys, where everyone gets a chance to sing.”

Amongst the twelve songs on ‘If You Leave…’ there are four cover versions, including The Beach Boys’ ‘God Only Knows’, ‘Lift The Wings’ from the theatre show Riverdance, the Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly penned song ‘True Colors’ and Elmore James’ ‘Dust My Broom’. The latter serves as the album’s encore and is McEvoy’s salute to Brian Jones, who is believed to have taught his contemporaries the blues standard’s slide guitar part.

To support the release of ‘If You Leave…’, Eleanor McEvoy will play the following UK tour dates:

Album review: FM – Rockville

FM - Rockville

Membran/Riff City Records [Release date 11.03.13 ]

Listening to ‘Rockville’ you can’t help thinking “how on earth did the band remain nearly men” in the late-1980s in spite of a dedicated following and when AOR was “king”?  And then you think “are they going to demand wider attention in the Millennium?”

I have to be honest: I really warmed to this band on their “return” and I particularly enjoyed ‘Wildside’, a little bit unexpected but a monumental riff-driven groove.  For me, they’ve not really topped that since although they continue to produce solid music, starting with the album ‘Metropolis’ which even brought them back to daytime radio playlists.

Anyone looking for anything other than prime-time FM c.1986 should look away.  What the band have done is build on their 2007 comeback and produced an album that could have been made back in the heyday.  This will no doubt please their hardcore fans but I am not sure it will please anyone else.

Perhaps I’ve missed the point.  With the band financing this project via Pledge Music you could say that all bands need to do now is to literally play to a captive audience who are prepared to invest directly.  I am not sure this is healthy though in terms of broadening a fanbase or stretching the envelope in terms of the music.  Bands could end up producing safe, comfortable albums for safe, comfortable audiences.

‘Tough Love’ and ‘Wake Up The World’ typify the band’s approach,  catchy tunes that will sound good on radio but they are terribly dated.  Ditto ‘Only Foolin’ the early single which demonstrates the band at their most soulful.  A couple of other songs do remain standouts: ‘Story Of My Life’ (with Overland at his passionate best) and ‘High Cost Of Loving’, albeit in a late-eighties cocoon.

FM have always veered toward the soulful end of the melodic/AOR spectrum, spearheaded by Steve Overland’s classy vocals  but I would have preferred a lot more darkness in the mix and some rock “edge”.  It isn’t here, except  for just one track – the excellent ‘Crosstown Train’.

The whole thing is a tad predictable, even the guitar solos (although always elegantly executed);  perhaps it was the sheer novelty of the last album that enchanted but I think overall it was a much stronger offering.

I am not privy to the extended version of the album that was sold via Pledge Music (and which will get a general release as ‘Rockville II’), so I can’t say whether the second album packaged with “Rockville” is a bit more risky.  I hope so.

The reasons why FM never capitalised on the success of their debut album in 1986 have been well-trodden and have much to do with the prevailing musical currents of the day and not least industry foibles.

FM are a great band and a great bunch of guys,  evidently revelling in their second coming,  but there’s no idea from this album that they are in any way stretching themselves or reaching out to a younger audience.  It’s like the car on the cover : solid and reliable in its day but not very sexy.   ***1/2

FM - Rockville 2

P.S. FM always give value for money and Rockville II is neither an album of leftovers nor the ubiquitous “alternative” mixes.  Starting with three songs that might have made the first cut, ‘Bad Addiction’ perhaps too much in Thunder territory for comfort.

The companion album should be an essential purchase if you haven’t already acquired it through the pre-sell deal.  If it tends to play safe again, it does show that FM are a band of consistency and sheer quality.

The instrumental ‘Desolation Station’ which folds into ‘Runaway Train’ was perhaps a little heavy for the ear candied main offering, but it shows the band’s moodier side to great effect with excellent synth orchestration and of course another great Overland vocal performance.

The remaining tracks are joyous reminders of classic, radio-friendly AOR that although strictly belong to a more carefree age are effective nonetheless, including ‘Living For The Weekend’, ‘Forever And A Day’, ‘Paradise Highway’ and ‘Brother Take Me Home’ whilst ‘Last Chance Saloon’ sounds more like prime-time Eagles in ‘Lying Eyes’-mode, perhaps with a bit of Darren Wharton’s Dare thrown into the mix.  ****

Most bands would be more than happy to release this as their “main” album.  Taken in the round, a renascent band to be reckoned with and a great overall **** package.

Album review: CATHEDRAL – The Last Spire

Rise Above – Release Date 29/4/2013.

The first time that the possibility of London-based Doomsters Cathedral calling it a day was on the cards was back in 2010, from the very mouth of the band’s legendary frontman Lee Dorian. During a very enjoyable and in depth interview Lee admitted having had such thoughts and, sadly for the fans of classic Doom, these very thoughts turned into reality last year.

The only consolation would be that what can rightfully be termed as the ‘end of an era’ will be marked by the release of a final full length album entitled “The Last Spire”  – an album that will be rightfully issued by Lee’s record label and the band’s spiritual home, Rise Above records.

Any band that has been as influential as Cathedral understands the necessity of leaving the music world with a ‘bang’ – but this is easier said than done when their previous studio effort “The Guessing Game” was, simply put, one of the most innovative and musically-accomplished releases of this genre. So how well did “The Last Spire” fare in comparison?

Well, even though “The Guessing Game”  continues to be Cathedral’s ‘magnum opus’ this eight track release came quite close in emulating a similar success. Far less “prog” and experimental in comparison, but it certainly holds quite a few aces up its sleeve, “The Last Spire” is a form of retrospective featuring elements from all the stages in the band’s career but mainly focusing on classic Doom formulae, thereby closing the musical circle first opened by “In Memoriam” back in 1990.

There is something quintessentially English about the delightful medieval-themed introduction of “Entrance To Hell” that should well prepare you for the coming onslaught, entitled “Pallbearer”. During its twelve minutes, the listener is exposed to classic slow-paced guitar riffs, pompous chants and 70s sounding keys – all working together in relative harmony and to the benefit of the composition itself. Jennings’ guitar turns more distorted and straight-forward and Sabbath-influenced in compositions such as “Cathedral Of The Damned” and “Tower Of Silence”, leaving the beautiful acoustic guitar and haunting keyboard melodies of “Infestation Of Grey Death” to sort of steal the show.

If, like me, you loved the band’s past endeavour to bring the worlds of Prog and Doom closer together then you will love the ten minute free-spirited “An Observation” and the resulting emotional tiredness that you ought to have accumulated by this stage explains the band’s decision to use a thirty nine second breather entitled “The Last Laugh” as a follow-up.

Being not only the last song of the album but also the last ever composition ever to be recorded by this band, “This Body, Thy Tomb” has plenty to live up to but pulls through in style. Opening with a classic Doom Metal riff and led by Lee’s trademark vocals, the song soon picks up pace and groove and finishes in dynamic fashion, but not before showcasing some truly inspiring melodic moments on the acoustic guitar and on keys, respectively.

All good things come to an end in this life and even though I feel really sad to see Cathedral go, I believe that this should not be a time of sorrow. Rather than mourning, we should focus on celebrating the life of a band which, during the last twenty three years, has presented us with ten magnificent albums, products of honesty, devotion and passion that have left their mark on the Doom Metal scene and which, let’s face it, will find it difficult to be surpassed in quality by any of the large number of hopefuls out there!

Guys, thank you very music for this long, exciting and truly magical music trip! Cathedral are dead – long live Cathedral!

Album review: CULT OF LUNA – Vertikal

Indie Recordings – Out Now.

Fifteen years is a long time for any band to make its impact felt and Cult Of Luna are among those outfits which have managed to cause much interested among fans and media since their inception back in 1998.

Even though the Progressive/Sludge/Post Metal style that these seven lads have espoused is what I can easily say is my cup of tea, I somehow hadn’t come across them before “Vertikal” -  the band’s sixth studio effort and the first with Norwegian Indie Recordings. So, what is it that I have been missing out on all these years?

Well, it seems there is quite a lot, actually. The press release states that “Vertikal” is a concept album and describes the band’s unique musical skills and capabilities, but words are not enough to convey the essence of this band’s here offering. With an average duration hovering around the ten minute mark, the nine compositions aim to gradually lure you in and once you’re hooked on the solid riffs and beautiful harmonies (which you will be), all resistance will be futile!

The duet Persson/Olofsson have done an amazing job on their six strings, and rather than being content with a classic supportive role, bassist Andreas Johansson and Thomas Hedlund often steal the show with their amazing skills, while Fredrik Kihlberg will surprise you with the variety of his performances, including both intense screams and moody clean harmonies.

The electronic soundscapes of “The One” offer a fitting and short introduction to the album, paving the way for the magnificent “I: The Weapon” which is a ten minute piece whose harmonies are reminiscent of late 90s Anathema, while its standout bass tones are heavy and groovy in equal parts.

How do you follow such an impressive song? With a nineteen and a half (!) musical orgy entitled “Vicarious Redemption”. Here the rhythm guitar reigns supreme up to the eleventh minute when, following a groovy bass tune and electronic key samples, you are exposed to a sensational lead melody that will stop you in your tracks!

Both “The Sweep” and “Synchronicity” fail to make a similar impact but keep the standards quite high, while the band’s varied musical character comes out all guns blazing in “Mute Departure”. Forty seconds may deem “Disharmonia” unnecessary to some but it will provide you with enough breathing space and help you to cope with the pounding riffs and solid bass lines of “In Awe Of”.

No song could provide a more fitting ending to this album than “Passing Through” – one of the few compositions to find Kihlberg using his clean vocals to great effect, making this six minute composition feel more like a church service than a Rock song.

I know that an album like “Vertikal” is more of an acquired taste, but that cannot and will not stop me from expressing my admiration towards this great piece of music, which has been carefully and gracefully created by this Umea-based septet.

I know that the time when people used to sit down and listen to albums in their entirety is long gone, however, I do believe that if you choose to treat “Vertikal” as a conventional Rock album rather than a classic concept release then you will miss out on a great experience. If you like your riffs to be heavy and your melodies simple but penetrating, then look no further as atmospheric/heavy music doesn’t get much better than this.

Album review: ROTTING CHRIST – Κατά τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού

Season Of Mist – Out Now.

Rotting Christ is a band that I have always admired, not only for their musically daring and impressive material but, most importantly, for the honesty and ethos that has accompanied them throughout their twenty five year career. As with most bands from the late 80s/early 90s extreme Metal scene, these noisy Athenians have experienced many highs and lows but most will agree that since finding a ‘home’ with French label Season Of Mist, Christ have found a renewed energy and inspiration.

So, how did Sakis Tolis, founding member and undoubtable leader of this fine troupe, opt to  follow up albums like the amazing “Theogonia” (2007) and the highly-accomplished “Aealo” (2010)? By releasing one of the most innovative, musically varied and, perhaps, most impressive albums of his career – the eleven (if you count the bonus track in the limited edition version)  track opus “Κατά τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού”.

Though ethnic elements and strong cultural references were incorporated in the band’s material in many of his previous works, it was in this album’s predecessor, namely “Aealo”, that Sakis’ experimental tendencies were really unleashed and, though the end result was pretty impressive, it was not universally embraced.

On the back of that experience, Sakis began working on compositions where male chants, folk instruments, female vocals and eerie keyboard themes continue to play a significant role but, crucially, ensure that such ideas are incorporated in such a way that his trademark riffs and Themis’ pounding drum beats are left enough room to breathe and manifest their energy and urgency. The end result? A perfectly balanced album whose flamboyant and confident composition operate perfectly both on an individual and collective level – a musical feast of gargantuan proportions!

The role of the opening track for the album was justifiably assigned to “In Yumen – Xibalba” and I say justifiably as I don’t believe that there will be a single fan of extreme Metal that will not be impressed by the aggression and energy of this song’s sublime up-tempo riff! Slower in pace but heavier in sound, “Punchaw Kachun – Tuta Kachun” starts as a dark piece focusing on choral chants and eerie vocals but soon starts flirting with guitar melodies of Maiden-esque appeal.

If there is one band that understands what constitutes a mid-tempo head-banging riff that band is certainly Rotting Christ and the amazing sing-along opus “Grandis Spiritus Diavolus” is clear proof of this, while the same-title “Κατά τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού” finds the band cleverly combining unrelenting blast beats with the sounds of the Greek Tsabouna (Bag pipe).

Last time Sakis employed the services of a female vocalist (Diamanda Galas) the end result (“Orders From The Dead”) was a standout contribution. Similarly, his collaboration with the Vougioukli sisters in “Cine Iubeste Si Lasa” gave birth to one of the most dramatic and soul-haunting compositions in the band’s career – a composition adorned with sinister piano melodies, choral male chants and a dramatic vocal duet between Sakis and the sisters.

Creating even a decent follow-up to such an amazing composition could be seen as impossible, but both the groove-infused “Iwa Voodoo” and the rhythmically aggressive “Gilgames” are a real treat for the ears, while the duet “Rusalka” / “Ahura Mazda – Adra Mainiuu” offer, though the prism of the band, an insight into the cultures of Russia and Arabia respectively.

We have all seen Sakis sporting a “ΧΞΣ” t-shirt over the years and most of us are aware of its association with the Book of Revelations but these associations become even clearer through the song bearing the same name on the album. This six minute piece based on an Ancient Greek narration of the most important parts of said book which is accompanied by tremendous lead melodies, eerie keys and some of Sakis’ most unearthly vocal performances to date.

If you opt for the limited edition of this album, which I hope you will, you will treat yourselves to “Welcome To Hel” – a harmonic themed piece filled with clever leads and melodies which give a beautiful ending to this amazing release and provide further proof of how much Sakis has matured as both guitarist and composer these last few years.

My belief in and support of Sakis Tolis’ musical vision was forged many, many years ago and the bond that has been created as a result of that is growing stronger with every new Rotting Christ release. Any fears that you might have that the Athenian outfit had perhaps reached its artistic peak with “Theogonia” and “Aealo” will forever be dashed the moment you start listening to “Κατά τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού” – an album of unique beauty and unrivalled quality.

What we have here, my friends, is not just the most likely winner of the ‘album of the year’ but also one of the best albums ever written by this iconic band! Go, then, buy yourselves a copy of this great release – just make sure to handle with care once you have it – it may bewitch you!

John Stefanis

PHILIP H.ANSELMO & WARBEAST – War Of The Gargantuas Split E.P.

Housecore Records/Season Of Mist – Out Now.

Philip H. Anselmo is a name that should require not a single word of introduction to any self-respecting metalhead. If that happens to be the case with you then please leave our pages immediately! For the rest of us, the really important news here is that the man who’s impressive music CV contains names such as Pantera, Superjoint Ritual and Down (amongst various additional collaborations) has finally decided to fulfil his ‘threat’ and finally go solo!

With a full length album scheduled for release later this year, Anselmo took a commercially and promotionally sound decision by releasing a four track Split E.P with Warbeast – an old-school Death Thrash which just so happens to have a contract with Anselmo’s label Housecore Records and which is also about to release a full length album in the months to come.

So, is this four track E.P nothing more than a cheap attempt at self-promotion, whose purpose is to make our wallets just a tad lighter? That may well have been the case had the music on offer not been so damn good and different from what we are used to! Anselmo has always been quite vocal of his appreciation of old school Metal and now, without any pressure and expectations involved, he is finally free to indulge in riffs and melodies that have more in common with bands like Voivod and Death rather than those featured in the music of Down. As for Warbeast: these lads are as old-school as it gets, mixing explosive Thrash riffs with  drumming variations and intensity normally found in the Late 80s/early 90s Death Metal scene.

Phil’s first contribution on this four track E.P, namely “Conflict (Never Meets Bone)” is my personal favourite as I find the combination of angry/shouting vocals, distorted-groovy mid tempo riffs and Slayeric solos simply irresistible. Actually, I will not be at all surprised if I find myself humming along to its catchy refrain melody in weeks to come.

Warbeast are a different beast altogether, however their intention is also to catch the listener completely unawares through the use of classic Thrash riffs and vocals whose timbre is somewhat reminiscent of Roger Miret’s (Agnostic Front). Anselmo and groove have forged a very healthy alliance over the years, so one ought not to be surprised by its presence in “Family, Friends and Associates”.

What should surprise you, however, is the use of formulae that owe much to Voivod in terms of inspiration – a band that Anselmo has been openly supportive of since the late 80s. The final offering “It” is Warbeast’s second composition, finding the band indulging in a variety of straight-forward meaty riffs, supported by some truly inspiring and energetic drum beats, ones capable of giving those who are unaccustomed a full-blown heart attack.

As far as ‘starters’ go, this four track E.P is one of the most desirable I have come across in a very long time. I can understand that some of you might be considering skipping this release and focussing instead on the two full-length albums to come and that will make sense, providing that these four compositions are there.

If, however, this ends up not being the case, you would have missed out on an opportunity to listen to some truly inspired and passionate extreme Metal, the likes of which is very rare these days. Do you really want to take such a risk? Not if you love your Metal!

Album review: SUFFOCATION – Pinnacle Of Bedlam

Nuclear Blast – Out Now.

If you are not a fan of the extreme sound you might be excused from believing that the chances of finding innovation in a genre as strict in its rules as Death Metal are quite thin but that would also clearly indicate that you know nothing of Suffocation – the Long Island quintet whose outrageously guttural vocals, blistering riffs and sophisticated song-writing has helped define the genre since its inception.

Three years ago, the band signed a contract with Nuclear Blast and in “Blood Oath” released one of the most impressive albums of their career. Never ones to rest on their laurels, the noisy Americans have decided to unleash yet another product of sheer brutality, one that comes in the shape of a ten track album entitled “Pinnacle Of Bedlam”.

Creating an album to top or even match “Blood Oath” would be an unenviable task for any band but Suffocation are not ones to refuse a challenge, as suggested by the material on offer here. With drummer extraordinaire Dave Culross (ex Malevolent Creation, Incantation, Hateplow) once again behind the drums and with the guitar duet Terrance Hobbs/Guy Marchais in devilish form, these master noisemakers did what they know best and that is to create short, brutal but also technically and rhythmically challenging compositions that can and should only really be appreciated after persistent exposure to them.

If you ever wonder about the most appropriate way to introduce a Death Metal album then you need look no further than “Cycles Of Suffering” – a crunchy riffed tune filled with flamboyant leads and blistering snare drum beats that should please all fans of extreme music. Short but truly inspiring, “Purgatorial Punishment” succeeds in keeping a healthy momentum, while “Eminent Wrath” allows the band’s groovier side to come to the surface.

“As Grace Descends” features a top riff full of energy, while the moody harmonic leads and commanding vocals, courtesy of vocal legend Frank Mullen in “Sullen Days” elevate this composition to the status of “true highlight”. More flamboyant leads and technical guitar work can be found both in the same titled “Pinnacle Of Bedlam” and “Inversion”, while “My Demise” also stands out as a solid groove-ridden gem.

The band’s technical skills once again shine through in “Rapture Of Revocation”, while the closing opus “Beginning Of Sorrow” comes across as the product of healthy competition between the band’s two massively skilled axemen.

So, how does “Pinnacle Of Bedlam” fare when compared to its highly acclaimed predecessor and how does it deserve to be treated by the band’s loyal fan base? Well, while “Blood Oath” still retains the title of the album that managed to re-energise Suffocation and bring them closer to what one could describe as “commercial acclaim”, this ten track monster of an album comes pretty damn close in rivalling it.

As far as the band’s fans are concerned: well, with such a technically impressive and brutally honest album in their hands, what reason would they have to complain? This one’s not for the faint-hearted!

Album review: MATT WOOSEY BAND – On The Wagon

Self Release [Release date 28.03.13]

The Matt Woosey Band’s ‘On The Wagon’ (geddit?) has far more substance than the album title suggests and is a sparkling advert for roots rock.

The West Midland’s guitarist may pen blues derivative songs, but they are never smothered by the genre. Matt uses his blues roots as launch pad for rhythmically compelling acoustic songs, which are propelled by an insistent percussive feel and topped by interesting lyrics.

Matt’s strength lies in the way he transforms the past into the present.  He tops and tails the album with the opening Dobro led ‘Black Smoke Rising’ and the down to the bone ‘Dopey Mick’. The recycled classic blues lyrics are re-invigorated by his effervescent guitar playing. Whether playing slide, finger picking, bone hard rhythms, or telling electric bursts, Woosey knows the value of dynamics.

Matt Woosey is a breath of fresh air in an era where most singer song-writers are one step away from bed-sit depression.  His intense playing is full of sharp contrasting tempos, tones and melodies, and his vocals are as impassioned as his phrasing is expansive. Above all, he’s an artist who understands the essential interrelationship between his songs and their musical delivery.

‘Cruel Disposition’ makes the most of a mid-number guitar break and chiming guitar lines and he brings real presence to bear on ‘Don’t Need Money’. The latter is anchored by a John Martyn percussive feel and an emotive Tim Buckley meets Van Morrison style vocal. His playing is rock solid throughout and his voice seeks out every facet of emotion the lyrics offer him.

Matt has the style and class to pull it off, whether via the accentuated phrasing on the last verse of ‘Elsie May’ or the gentle changes of the beautifully nuanced love song ‘Find A Way’.

The key to Matt’s broad musical vista lies in his expressive guitar figures which cleverly mirror lyrical meaning, while the delightful acoustic wash of songs like ‘Find A Way’ brings an uplifting feel.

Matt is a musical sculptor who starts from blues base and works his way round a musical arc that comes to rest in acoustic roots music.  Listen for example, to the hypnotic feel of ‘Jealous Man’ and the folk influenced love song, ‘She Just Called’, which recalls Harry Chapin at his best. The fleeting extra layer of gently distorted electric guitar is the equivalent of a painter’s brush stroke.

And just when you think he’s revealed all his hand, he pops up with the slide led boogie of ‘That’s My Baby’. Then there’s ‘Woke Up This Morning’, which in anyone else’s hands might have you reaching for the forward button, but he nails it with some indomitable slide within a trio format.

You don’t need a drink to listen to ‘On the Wagon’, just immerse yourself in the subtle grooves, intricate playing and let Matt’s emotive vocal quaver wash over you and let the music do the rest. ***** (5/5)

Album Review: FOR THE IMPERIUM – Hail The Monsters

Graphite Records  (Release date – out now)

Being a rock reviewer you are spoilt for choice when it comes to pigeonholing bands. There are so many genres and sub genres within rock that you can usually find one to fit the band, job done. However occasionally a band comes along that are so eclectic and chaotic that they are impossible to label, For The Imperium are most definitely in this category .

On first listen to this album I only lasted a couple of minutes, techno like keyboards hail the start of ‘Take A Breath, Now You’re Going To War’ which then descends into rabid guitar work, machine gun vocals and drumming from Animal of The Muppets, it is not a gentle introduction. However persevere with the record and it all starts to make sense of sorts.

Pendulum in a pub brawl with Sikth is a good indication of the music the guys produce. At times songs appear to be total chaos then from out of nowhere the band pull it all together for moments of glorious clarity and melody.

The technical skills on show throughout the album are jaw dropping at times as demonstrated on possibly the highlight of the disc, ‘Northern Rampage’, which packs so much into 3 minutes and 33 seconds it is hard to take in on first listen.

Other highlights, like the off kilter riffs, come thick and fast. Whether it is the short sonic blast of ‘Sexual Advisory (Explicit Content)’ or the epic ‘Heaven Shall Fall/ Hell Will Return’ which showcases the band’s songwriting and playing talents perfectly, all tracks are highly impressive.

For The Imperium have created an album which entertains and challenges in equal measure. Whether you consider it the product of twisted minds or twisted genius will depend on how open you are to accepting the new. The band though have also catered for those of a nervous disposition, just jump straight to the discotastic closing number, ‘ Dirty Animal, Go And Saved Yourself!’, and boogie on down. They really do cover all bases!

Gig review: STEVEN WILSON – Royal Festival Hall, London, 4 March 2013

Gig Review: Yiannis (John) Stefanis

Photos by Talya Jacoby (www.talyajacoby.com)

Steven Wilson is perhaps the only high-profile Rock personality whose name is almost constantly featured in music mags and internet sites these last few years and with good reason. When not providing the ‘5.1 treatment’ in classics such as “Aqualung” (Jethro Tull) and “The Court Of The Crimson King” (King Crimson) you will find him creating music either as part of the well-established outfit Porcupine Tree or as a solo musician.

It was less than a month ago that his third solo effort “The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories)” was released by Kscope and it was that album’s phenomenal success and the creator’s ever-growing popularity that enabled him to book the amazing Royal Festival Hall for a two and a half hour performance on the night of the 4th of March 2013 – a performance that I, and presumably many amongst you readers, was really looking forward to attend.

The decision to not include an opening act in tonight’s show was a wise one in my humble opinion as it enabled the roadies to work towards achieving a top quality sound for the show – preparations still under way when the doors of this impressive venue opened at 19:30. Half an hour was enough for punters to take the occasional group photo, the suit and tie guy to finish reading his copy of the Economist and lads with Porcupine Tree t-shirts to carefully transport their beers to their allocated seats without spilling any.

Steven Wilson - London Royal Festival Hall, 4 March 2013

Then, at exactly 20:00, the lights of the venue were gradually dimmed and a large roar followed Marco Minnemann’s entry onto the stage. Once the much skilled drummer found his way behind the drum kit, the rest of the band consisting of Nick Beggs (Bass), Guthrie Govan (guitar), Adam Holzman (keys), Theo Travis (flutes/saxophone) and, of course, Steven Wilson followed suit, further increasing the levels of noise caused by the crowd’s intense shouting and clapping of hands.

Barefooted and sporting a Vinyl Pirates t-shirt, Wilson suddenly raised his hand as if conducting an orchestra and, like magic, Nick Beggs’ bass began producing the most harmonic of sounds, thereby introducing “Luminol” – the opening track of his new album. Twelve and a half minutes, and hundreds of notes later, I find myself struggling to get myself together, enchanted by the sheer musicianship displayed by this well-jelled troupe and looking forward to another two hours of sheer musical joy: and I would not be disappointed.

Clearly relieved and satisfied by the results of the band’s performance thus far, Wilson thanked us for attending the show and announced that “The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories)” was to be performed in its entirety. Thereafter, he sat down in a chair, grabbed his acoustic guitar and with the help of Nick Beggs performed a killer vocal rendition of “Drive Home”, assisted by Theo Travis’ Floydian flute melodies.

Steven Wilson - London Royal Festival Hall, 4 March 2013

The night’s show, however, was not only about Wilson and thus provided ample opportunities for all remaining band members to shine. It was Marco Minnemann’s drumming that made “Pin Drop” such a powerful proposition; a Crimson-inspired piece of numerous rhythmical changes that led Wilson to say “I am very happy to have that behind me” after the last few notes were finally performed.

“Postcard”, the first non-“Raven…” song of the evening enabled Adam Holzman to flex his keyboard muscles and the follow up “Holy Drinker” found Wilson picking up Beggs’ bass and providing a funky slap intro. Minutes later, Beggs grabbed his Chapman Stick and what followed was a barrage of head banging riffs, followed by a sensational piano solo by Holzman.

“Deform To Form A Star” is a 70s-sounding Hammond-led piece which offers some solace to our over-stimulated ears, following which a large curtain fell and covered the whole of the stage and all those beautiful video projections which, up to that point, were offering a support role to the music suddenly became the focal point of the show, first supporting the Intro and then the main body of “The Watchmaker” – one of the highlights of the show. The curtain remained in place for one more powerful song, namely “Index”, and following its removal a seated Wilson found his way to his mini Hammond and performed “Insurgents” and “Harmony Korine” with both passion and finesse.

A much needed break was found during a protracted conversation between Wilson and the crowd during which we were informed that Wilson prefers to read negative rather than positive reviews when the latter mention his love towards Tolkien-related lyrical themes, his mother-induced fascination towards…serial killers and ends with a sweet acknowledgement of her support over the years – one gracefully received by the very same woman sitting in the royal box.

Having really enjoyed Guthrie Govan’s protracted solos and the band’s jazz experimentations, I was totally mesmerized by the emotional soundscapes of “The Raven That Refused To Sing” – a really heartfelt piece following which the band members, one after the other, put down their instruments and left the stage.

One would assume that two hours of music would be enough to satisfy most crowds but no one, myself included, was willing to leave London’s Royal Festival Hall without an encore, and it was soon after leaving the stage that Wilson and Co returned, much to our satisfaction.

Looking both pleased and relieved, as suggested by his comment “Home town shows – always the hardest”, Wilson explained his problems with choosing a fitting encore for the night’s show and then proceeded with a killer rendition of Porcupine Tree’s classic “Radioactive Toy” – one that found the band on the receiving end of a protracted and well-deserved standing ovation after the last few notes had been performed.

So what is it that makes a Steven Wilson show such a special experience? Well, apart from the quality of the music on offer, which nowadays borders the sublime, what you get is perhaps the only ‘environment’ where audio and video elements are presented in an artful and well-balanced way, offering what can only be described as an all-encompassing and all-consuming concert experience.

It has been a long time since the world understood and acknowledged Wilson’s importance in Rock music – if you are yet to be converted, all you have to do is attend one of his shows and only then will you realise what the ‘fuss’ is all about. This, without a shadow of a doubt, was one of the most impressive and soul-engaging performances I have ever seen in my life!

Steven Wilson Set List:

1. “Luminol”
2. “Drive Home”
3. “Pin Drop”
4. “Postcard”
5. “Holy Drinker”
6. “Deform To Form A Star”

Album review: ENFORCER – Death By Fire

Nuclear Blast – Out Now.

As part of the blessed 80s generation that got to enjoy all the classic Heavy Metal albums in their making I am sceptical about young bands that claim they play “True Metal”. I mean, what the hell does “True Metal” really mean? As you can appreciate, I try to keep well away from such bands but being a music journalist makes such efforts pretty difficult.

It was with much hesitation and reservation that I decided to undertake the task of reviewing Enforcer’s third studio album “Death By Fire” and so I was quite relieved to discover, only after a couple of good spins, that this nine track release is quite suited to my taste.

You see, Enforcer succeed where most bands desperately fail and that is in really managing to recreate a style and sound made famous by bands like Metallica, Anvil and Iron Maiden back in the early 80s. Riffs are simple and sharp, guitar solos flamboyant and to the point and Olof Wikstrand’s vocals high in timbre and with the conviction needed to support the band’s up-tempo rhythmical tunes.

With an average duration of three and a half minutes, these songs inflict an immediate impact upon the listener and, most importantly, operate in a rather cordial way rather than fighting each other for your approval, offering as a result a pretty harmonious listening experience.

The piano tunes and guitar harmonies offer a short introduction to the album, while the Metallica cut-edge riffs and flamboyant solos of “Death Rides The Night” raised the temperature to dangerous highs. More such influences can be found in the equally dynamic “Run For Your Life”, while “Mesmerised By Fire” finds the band looking more towards Motley Crue “Shout At The Devil” era for inspiration.

Joseph Tholl is a gifted guitarist as the second Hard Rocker of the album “Take Me Out Of This Nightmare” seems to suggest, while the amazing twin guitar melodies of “Crystal Suite” make it the band’s own “Transylvania” and one of the many Maiden influenced tracks of this album. “Sacrifice” is a rhythmically varied beast of a song and the equally challenging “Silent Hour/The Conjugation” successfully paves the way for the closing opus “Satan” – a short but highly addictive up-tempo track whose main riff is terribly reminiscent of Metallica’s “Metal Militia”.

I said it once and I will say it again: “Death By Fire” is an album that took me completely unawares. Just as I thought I knew what these four Swedes were about, they managed to change my mind completely by creating an album that is simple in structure but honest in intent.

Playing to its strengths, which are many, the Arvika-based quartet has created an album that will further bond them with their faithful fans but which will hopefully bring about more converts. If you are longing for the sound and style of early 80s Metal then “Death By Fire” is certainly the album for you.

Album review: LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH – Baphometic Chaosium

Metal Blade – Out Now.

When you are a member of a band whose first ever worldwide tour has been in support of Glen Danzig, your subsequent tour experiences involve bands such as Kreator, Behemoth and you enjoy the financial support of a label such as Metal Blade then there should be no doubt in your mind that you are in a very privileged position.

Though many fellow-journalists were fast in praising Lightning Swords of Death and their innovative spirit and technical skills, 2010s full length “The Extra Dimensional Wound” did not manage to justify the hype for me – still, I remained open minded and in anticipation of more material from the five Californians. Two years later, the band is ready to release its third studio effort entitled “Baphometic Chaosium” while I, on the other hand, am ready to see if these lads will manage to score higher in my appreciation this time round.

Sadly “Baphometic Chaosium” continues exactly where its predecessor left off. Riffs are heavy and meaty but are often repetitive, Autarch’s vocals are clever and intimidating but often out of place, while Mike Vega’s drumming is intense and technically challenging but often over the top and uncontrollable resulting in the rhythmical structures of the songs on offer being mortally undermined.

One a more positive note, there are some really interesting background keyboard themes which create a feeling of eeriness throughout the album and quite a few individual guitar performances are truly inspiring, incorporating elements of Death and Black Metal in equal measure.

The Death (band) influences bass lines of the opening same-titled track “Baphometic Chaosium” made quite a positive impression on me but soon after the first section of the follow-up “Acid Gate” was completed, I kind of knew that this would not continue for much longer. Though I loved the groovy main riff of “Psychic Waters”, the song is quite monotonous and predictable while I cannot see the reasoning behind placing a two minute instrumental composition such as “Cloven Shields” as a follow up.

My hopes were again raised by the heavy Doom-laden beast entitled “Chained To Decay” only to be dashed again by the structurally insane “R’ Lyeh Wuurm”. Fans of latter-day Satyricon will feel really at home with “Epicularium” – a song which is reminiscent of the mighty Norwegians both in terms of feel and execution, while the closing anthem “Oaken Chrysalis” has a few interesting moments but it is sadly fairly directionless.

Lightning Swords Of Death are what one could describe as an unusual band, the kind of outfit that is meant to divide audiences and operate as an ‘acquired taste’. In my particular case, my reaction to the music seems to suggest that I am on the wrong side of the fence but that does not mean that all fans of extreme Metal will agree with me.

“Baphometic Chaosium” will soon be unleashed upon mankind and, as far as the fans of Lightning Swords Of Death are concerned, it will be a must- have – does that apply to you?

Album review: HATEBREED – The Divinity Of Purpose

Nuclear Blast – Out Now.

Labels always accompany new releases with a press release, so I found the shortage of information on Nuclear Blast’s leaflet for Hatebreed’s sixth studio album “The Divinity Of Purpose” somewhat strange. On the other hand, maybe the band speaks for itself nowadays.

The last time Jasta & Co visited the studio was back in 2009, a year which turned out to be quite productive for them as not only did they release their full length “Hatebreed” album, but also “For The Lions” – a collection of covers of songs from bands which have influenced them over the years with Sepultura, Obituary and Agnostic Front being the most prominent names.

Having paid their tributes, the Connecticut-based quintet decided to stick to the formula they know best and in the process have created eleven Punk-infused, heavy-riffed compositions which may not stretch the band’s creativity, but which will definitely please those most loyal to them.

“Put It To The Torch” may not be the most impressive song on the album but it contains the energy and attitude needed to open a Hatebreed album. On the other hand, “Honor Never Dies” is the archetypal anthemic opus with the kind of powerful riffs and strong lyrics that you would expect from a band that is devoted to classic Hardcore, Agnostic Front-style, and which has been around for almost two decades now.It is this pretty fine balance between decent and impressive compositions which characterises the remainder of the album.

Though full of energy and meaty riffs, songs like “On Your World”, “Before The Fight Ends” and “Indivisible” are not the mind-blowing tracks that this band is capable of creating. It is really the head banging riffs of “The Language”, the Slayeric melodies of “Dead Man Breathing” and the relentless groove of the duet “The Divinity Of Purpose”/”Time To Murder It” that show what these guys are really capable of doing, i.e., successfully combining abrasive Punk-style screaming vocals with rhythmical riffs of immense heaviness and quality.

Hatebreed play a style of music that is very close to my heart and whose compositional rules are so simple that it requires a lot of effort for any band of this style to come up with a bad album. What I expect from Hardcore bands are simple but solid riffs, quality vocals and much energy and there are indeed times when “The Divinity Of Purpose” seems to fulfil all these simple requirements.

Hatebreed’s sixth studio album may not be the highlight of the band’s career but it is, however, a release that can proudly stand next to well-established efforts, such as “The Rise Of Brutality” and “Supremacy” and that should be enough to satisfy fans, old and new.

Album review: BEDEMON – Symphony Of Shadows

Svart Records – Out Now.

Bedemon is a name that not many people, however much involved in Heavy Metal music, are expected to know. This has mainly to do with the fact that, even though they have been in existence since 1973, it is only now that their second studio album, entitled “Symphony Of Shadows”, has been released.

If fans of the 70s Doom Metal legends Pentagram find this story to be terribly familiar it is for good reason – this is the very band in which Bobby Liebling (vocals), Randy Palmer (guitar) and Geoff O’Keefe (drums) learned their craft! Similar to Pentagram, the story of Bedemon is ridden with bad luck and abuse in equal measures, as Randy Palmer sadly passed away during the recording process of this very album, leaving the remaining members to complete and release this nine track album as a form of tribute to their fallen comrade.

Svart Records, a Finnish label responsible for the release of Pentagram’s albums on vinyl in the recent past, jumped at the opportunity of giving Bedemon a home, and a good thing they did as “Symphony Of Shadows” is in many ways comparable to any of Pentagram’s latest albums. Filled with heavy riffs whose groovy sound is both disarming and enjoyable, simple and ever-changing rhythmically, Bedemon’s music can be a real treat to any fan of classic Doom Metal, but especially to those of you who worship at the altar of guitar legend Tony Iommi.

Similarities with Pentagram become clearly audible from the opening few seconds of “Saviour” and can be found in abundance throughout the album. Check out “Lord Of Desolation” and be enthralled by its brilliant bass leads and clever rhythmical arrangements or sit back and enjoy the fitting flute arrangements in “Son Of Darkness” or the Sabbath-laden solos in the colourful but quite moody “The Plague”.

The quality of the head banging riffs of “D.E.D” is such that it can easily be considered the highlight of the album but, sadly, the follow-up “Kill You Now” lacks both passion and finesse as it finds the band unsuccessfully incorporating…Punk elements! The last three compositions of the album are the longest and more rhythmically diverse, with “Godless” coming across as heavy and urgent, “Hopeless” dramatic and moody and “Eternally Unhuman” – filled with beautifully-crafted but evil-sounding guitar melodies.

“Symphony Of Shadows” may not be the most technically challenging album that you will ever encounter, nor the best sounding in terms of recording quality, but it has what most modern recording lacks: depth, passion and soul.

It is a real shame that Randy Palmer is not around to witness the release of this album and enjoy the many positive reviews already provided by my fellow journalists, but, even so, “Symphony Of Shadows” stands as a true testament to powerful, emotive and uncompromising music.
