Provogue 2011
American Blues Rock guitarist Popa Chubby has been nothing short of prolific in his output over the last decade. Releasing six studio and four live albums in the last ten years, “Back to New York City” is his first release on the Provogue label and is no doubt his finest collection of work to date.
Containing 11 tracks, “Back to New York City” finds Chubby sitting comfortably alongside the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy yet at the same time Hendrix and even some of the heavier rock bands. Popa Chubby doesn’t look like your average guitar maestro- he stands 300 pounds in weight, shaven headed and tattooed to the nines- yet appearances are deceptive as he plays blues rock in a way that most can only aspire to.
Whilst tracks “Back to New York City”, “She Loves Everybody But Me” and “Stand Before The Sun” all stand out, it is the tortured vocals on “Pound of Flesh” and the awesome “It’s About You” that steal the album for me. Then we get his take on Leonard Cohen’s “The Torture”, an interpretation of Bach’s “Jesus Joy of Mans Desire” and “Keep Your Woodpile Dry”- a track which, if released by Seasick Steve, would have been all over your radio by now.
If you are a fan of the blues rock genre then “Back to New York City” is an album that should not be missing from your collection.
