Pilgrim – Misery Wizard

Doomheads rejoice!! And fire up you bongs for Pilgrim are here to melt your face with some of the finest, sludgiest, doomiest metal this side of Candlemass. Can you believe they’re from Rhode Island? I have been a fan of doom metal for some time now. Some bands have been able to satisfy my need for all things doom and gloom, but it’s been a while since a band has gotten it so perfect. And Pilgrim has raised the bar for this genre indeed.

I realize I’m late to the party here, as the album was released on the blackest of days, Valetnine’s, on Metal Blade, but I was so taken by this album that I had no choice but to spread the word. The Wizard (guitars and vocals) commands me through the music. All that aside, I’m serious, if you love doom metal as much as me, you can not miss out on their debut album Misery Wizard. Slow, plodding, and perfect is how I see Pilgrim’s music. The thing I love about this style, and why I think Pilgrim is levels ahead of most, is that anticipation that comes with listening. I know that seems odd that listening to music so slow and mesmerizing that you anticipate the next step, but that’s how it effects me. The songs are so slow and so dreary it actually hypes me up. I realize that this is a style some folks can’t get in to, but I adore it. To me, this is how heavy metal should sound. Rounding out the band are Count Elric the Soothsayer on bass and Krolg the Slayer Man on drums. All three blend together to create one of my favorite releases of the year thus far.

Tracks like…ah hell who am I kidding, the whole album is a standout. If you enjoy this style of music this would certainly be the album you want to get. Pilgrim have created an album that has all the elements of classic doom made great by bands like Candlemass, Pentagram, and St Vitus, but take it further. To say the least I really like this album.
