OZZY OSBOURNE – Speak Of the Devil

 Eagle Rock 2012

This live DVD has been available as a Japanese import for some time but now those lovely folk at Eagle Rock give it a full release. This concert was recorded at Irvine Meadows, California on June 12th 1982 (the CD of the same name was recorded at The Ritz, New York). Recorded not long after the tragic death of guitarist Randy Rhoads Ozzy’s band – Tommy Aldridge (drums), Rudy Sarzo (bass), Don Airey (keys) – are joined by Night Ranger’s guitarist Brad Gillis (who took over after Bernie Torme briefly stepped in). The rhythm section has a more US glam feel than the original duo of Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake and by the mid-late 80’s Ozzy and co wore all manner of garish clothing!

Ozzy seems to be putting his all into the show and as Rudy Sarzo’s sleeve notes explain carrying on with the tour after Randy Rhoads passing must have helped Ozzy through a very difficult time. Those first two Ozzy solo albums are understandably regarded as classics and live the versions of ‘Mr Crowley’, ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘I Don’t Know’ in particular are a joy to behold and hear.

Brad Gillis has his own guitar solo but I could easily do without a Tommy Aldridge drum solo. The Sabbath songs dominate the end of the set with ‘Iron man’, ‘Children of the Grave’ and the encore of ‘Paranoid’.

There are no extras on this DVD, just the concert and a reminder of what a live force Ozzy Osbourne was and still is.
