RED JASPER – A Midsummer Night’s Dream/The Winter’s Tale

Angel Air 2012 www.angelair.co.uk

The words ‘British’ and ‘quintessentially’ spring to mind listening to this eccentric brace of early 90’s releases from a former agitprop punk folk act that contrarily transmogrified itself into a progressive rock band.

Seemingly in awe of the genre’s early 70’s nascence, Red Jasper unashamedly bags glimmers of Tull, Floyd, Hawkwind and the theatrically stylized vocals of Van Der Graaf’s Peter Hammill across what can be loosely described as concept albums written in Shakespearean sonnet form.

Portly bearded driving force Davey Dodds swaps the breathless class hatred of the band’s politically-charged debut ‘Sting in The Tail’ here for a medievalist whimsy borne on swishing cloaks. ‘English as tuppence’ as Vivian Stanshall put it, both albums share charm, melody, passion and an innate self-belief that’s hard to put down.
