Steve Watts was the keyboards player in Demon between 1985 and 1991 and co-wrote much of the band’s output in those years along with vocalist Dave Hill. After leaving Demon he all but disappeared from the music world until now. Demon Dude’s Revenge has been recorded over the past few years, features over twenty musicians and is a real labour of love.
One thing to stress is it is not a Demon album, although fans of the band will enjoy hints of Demon’s past in the album artwork and on a couple of the songs. It is a real musical melting pot taking in bits of prog rock, punk, psychedelia and just plain weird! It is best listened to as one piece to gain full enjoyment plus get the headphones on to pick out little subtle touches you may miss otherwise.
The punk meets Hawkwind of ‘It’ Message Is…’ sits well with say the spacey pop of ‘Tea Cosy Mong’, it shouldn’t but it does. The progressive leanings of Steve Watts Demon years show through on ‘The Glorious Pretension Of Being’, where the music sounds like Pink Floyd one minute and then Steve Hillage on the instrumental passages.
Don’t go expecting a Demon spin-off sounding album but do go in with your ears and mind open. This is only volume one and I am sure more aural delights await.
