Hypertension [Release date 13.05.13]
Having served a 10 year apprenticeship playing bass and singing in her father, modern-day blues innovator Otis Taylor’s band, Cassie Taylor has paid her dues at the age of only 26.
With one album already under her belt (Blue, 2011) and also in demand as magazine / fashion model, she’s been at the helm for every step of Out of My Mind – producing, arranging, and performing on vocals, bass, organ, piano and even financing the sessions.
Recorded at Immersive Sound in Boulder, Colorado with her band drummer Larry Thompson and guitarist Steve Mignano, the Out of My Mind is a big slab of classy soulful Americana blues.
And it’s an undeniable that Americans just ‘do’ this sort of music so much better than their English contemporaries. It’s as if it’s somehow in their DNA.
The twelve tracks on Out Of My Mind are built on a marvellous the bedrock of exemplary blues based three piece playing – each instrument clear and distinct, graced with Taylor’s soulful vocals, but stretching to encompass aspects of rock, jazz, electronica and much more. Taylor somehow manages to find the blues in the most unexpected of places.
Live, she’s apt to segue Nine Inch Nails into Muddy Waters, and the first bass line she ever played was that of Hey Joe. Her debut was how her producer saw her, Out Of My Mind is her vision and it’s one that surely signals the arrival of a major talent on the blues scene and way beyond. ****
