Murder of My Sweet front woman Angelica Rylin has moved away from their symphonic metal sound for her debut solo release – Thrive is another one of Frontier’s all-star melodic rock records. Angelica has brought fellow band members Daniel Flores and Johan Niemann with her and together with such luminaries as ,, they have written a modern sounding AOR record in the vein of classic Heart, Vixen and Robin Beck.
Opener and first single Breaking My Heart is the best song on show…possibly due to the Harry Hess co-write. I Am Strong is another excellent tune sounding not unlike a female fronted FM. Can’t Stop Love is the big ballad and really cannot be faulted with its Heart-like feel. Most of the other songs pass pleasantly by but nothing matches these three songs. Worst song on offer has to be Nothing Else You Can Break which lacks anything memorable and is just bland.
The production on here is superb with crystal clear vocals and emotive guitar solos. The songs make all of the right sounds but a few of them lack that killer bridge or chorus and as a result don’t really stick in your head.
Angelica has stated that recording a classic AOR album has been a long-time dream of hers and she hopes that we will stick around for the next chapter.
Well I’ll definitely stick around as this is a classy record topped with Angelica’s sublime vocals but let’s hope for a few more killer tunes next time to push it to the next level. ***½
