Album review: LOVE UNDER COVER – Into The Night

Escape Music www.escape-music.com

The second album from this band follows on quickly from their highly rated debut ‘Set The Night On Fire’. The band features amongst it’s talented line-up vocalist Mikael Erlandsson (Last Autumn’s Dream/Salute)  and multi-instrumentalist Mikael Carlsson, with guitarist Martin Kronlund (Gypsy Rose/Phenomena) producing the album again.

The album packs its musical punches in early with the catchy hard rocking opener ‘A Fight’ and the Poodles-like ‘Miracle’, one of their best songs to date. They also do a superb cover of Martika’s hit ‘Toy Soldiers’, miles better than the original that’s for sure. Vocalist Mikael Erlandsson puts in a heartfelt performance on this one. Mind you Martin Kronlund vies for the limelight too with his big heavy hitting riffs like those on ‘Fantasy Man’ and ‘Playboy No 7′, the latter perhaps not their best song on here but still an uplifting melody. Much prefer this band’s music than Salute’s (on which Erlandsson and Kronlund both feature) as it is has stronger hooks and melodies.

If you like modern Scandinavian melodic rock from the likes of Treat, the Poodles and Last Autumn’s Dream this album is an essential purchase. Already looking forward to album number three…

Nick van der Meulen adds…

I’ve become a fan of Michael Erlandsson’s voice after his superb performance on the last Salute album, but Lover Under Cover’s debut release, while good, fell a bit flat.  Things are looking up for “Into the night”, the project’s follow-up to their debut

The album is Scandi rock at its finest: slick production, great melodies and vocals, driving guitars and interlacing keyboards.  Great songs, many of which you can’t help but sing along to – this work is easily better than their debut.

It’s albums like these that remind one of why melodic rock is such a beautiful genre.  Well worth a listen.
