Self-release ( Release date 14.04.14)
This is the debut album from Somerset based Zoltar Speaks who are named after the fortune telling machine encountered by Tom Hanks in the 80’s film ‘Big’. Featuring the vocals of Louise Body, the band are a mix of Avenged Sevenfold’s melodic metal and Evanescence.
One thing that becomes clear early on is that the band know their way around their chosen instruments with some great playing on show. Body has a strong voice which cuts through the heavy metal well and complements the music.
Following the quiet opening that is ‘A’, the album opens with ‘See You In Another Life’ which is a heavy melodic track with a Maiden like guitar riff underpinning the track. ‘Last Man Standing’ continues the heavy theme, again with a twisting guitar riff and a catchy chorus.
This is followed by ‘I’m Coming’ which opens with an almost thrash like guitar intro and features a great solo mid song. Other songs of note are ‘Flesh And Blood’ which is the rock ballad of the album, ‘Face The Claymore’ which strays into prog metal territory and the acoustic led ‘Braver’ which is a lilting song with a great vocal performance again from Body. ‘I Can, I Can’t’ and previous EP track ‘Treatment’ finally round off the album in fine style.
This is a strong debut album which should provide a solid platform for the band to build upon. With tours lined up in the coming months their wish to be ‘Big’ may be a step closer.
