Album review: DAWN OF DESTINY – Forgotten, Enslaved, Admired, Released

www.phonotraxx.de [Released March 2014]

If like me you’ve become a little fed up of the seemingly endless stream of power/prog metal bands releasing so-so albums then rejoice as Dawn Of Destiny have created a mighty album here. It’s a concept piece based on the story of wheelchair bound girl following an accident caused by her mother and how their emotions and lives develop.

The band’s secret weapon has to be the soaring vocals of Jeanette Scherff, who puts in some powerful vocal performances on ‘Waiting For A Sign’ and the scene setting opener, ‘And With Silence Come The Fear’ (where she duets with Mats Leven of Yngwie Malmsteen fame). Mind you fellow band member Jens Faber adds a good, heavy vocal too when he appears.

Evergrey comes to mind on the relentlessly catchy guitar riff on ‘My Memories’ and the slow riffing of ‘End This Nightmare’, which sounds like Savatage. Speaking of which Jon Oliva of the aforementioned band pops up on ‘No Hope For The Healing’, a truly stellar vocal performance as you’d expect from Jon Oliva. They even manage a little melodic hard rock with ‘Prayers’ and the showstopping pomp of Meat Loaf on ‘Then I Found You’, loving the harmony vocals on this one!

Ignore this one at your cost as this is one of the better power/prog metal releases in the past twelve months or so. Excellent sound/production too considering this was done without a name label (although the label is owned by German hard rockers Axxis).
