Album review: WAMI – Kill The King

Metal Mind Records [Released 13.05.14]

Who is WAMI? Well they are a new band built around young Polish guitarist Iggy Gwadera from Anti Tank Nun (what a legendary band name!), after Marco Mendoza was impressed seeing him perform as a support to Thin Lizzy.

Joining him are vocalist Doogie White (currently in MSG and formerly in Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen’s band), bassist Marco Mendoza (Black Star Riders/Whitesnake) and drummer Vinnie Appice (Dio/Black Sabbath). A pretty impressive line-up I am sure you’ll agree.

The album has a good grounding in the classic sounds of Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and given the album’s title, Rainbow. Lots of musical variety on here too from the epic opener ‘Exodus (The Red Sea Crossing)’ which sounds like a Dio-era Sabbath tune. ‘The Rider’ is a top notch hard rocker with an instant chorus and even a throwaway lyric on ‘One More For Rock ‘N’ Roll’ is great fun.

Vocalist Piotr Cugowski guests on the ballad ‘Guardian Of Your Heart’ and his vocals suit Doogie White’s down to the ground. This tune really reminds you of classic Coverdale/Whitesnake, great stuff.

Iggy Gwadera’s style of playing is reminiscent of fellow guitarists like Vivian Campbell and Adrian Vandenburg, in fact Mr Coverdale should tap him up for the current guitarist vacancy in Whitesnake.

He can do a little metal on ‘Transition’ and show a more mellower side to his playing on ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose You’, where Doogie White puts in another fine vocal performance. This song reminded me of Mr Big, mainly for the vocal harmonies in the middle of the song.

I really hope WAMI do another album and become more than a studio based band as this album is chock full of quality hard rock music.  ****
