It’s amazing the gig venues you keep discovering in London as I had never heard of the Surya before and it has a whole host of gigs put on by the promoters Glasswerks. A dinky little venue with a bar on the ground floor and in the basement was the stage with a crowd of a hundred or so people. Could maybe invest in air con though as I wouldn’t fancy seeing a gig there in a heatwave!
Young Irish band the Young Folk were playing the first date of a mini-UK tour, having played at the Cambridge Folk Festival and opened for Midlake in the US. They have their debut album ‘The Little Battle’ out in August and have just released the highly enjoyable single ‘Way Home’.
Frontman Anthony Furey (son of George from the legendary the Fureys & Davy Arthur) not only has a good voice (as do the other three members of the band when they join in on the harmonies), but throughout the evening you can become mesmerised by his fluent acoustic guitar picking and playing.
The new single ‘Way Home’ sounded even better live, complete with audience harmonies and you can see this fast becoming a live staple of their set.
Really enjoyed ‘I’ve Been Here Before’, complete with an offer from a member of the audience for the band to play at his house which cued a running gag about serial killers. All done in the spirit of good fun I might add!
‘Letters’ was the band’s Christmas release and along with ‘Way Down South’, shows the musical dexterity of the band with xylophones, mandolins and spot on harmony vocals.
Very impressive live and they seemed at ease happily engaging in good natured banter with the more vocal members of the audience. A perfect blend of alt folk with a pop edge and do check this band as they will be worth the effort.
