VOLBEAT – Doc Holiday/Lonesome Rider
(10” gold vinyl with innersleeve) Spinefarm /Universal
It’s so good to see some decent modern metal given a quality vinyl release.
Danish band Volbeat mix metal with modern alternative and also rockabilly/psychobilly. Both tracks are taken from the 2013 album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies. The opening bars to Doc Holiday are rockabilliy-ish before a thundering solid metal comes in, the vocals and riff reminiscent of the gothic side of early 90s Metallica.
There’s some intermittent banjo like picking too. A very solid track indeed. Lonesome Rider, featuring Sarah Blackwood, is much more psychobilly, an edge that stay throughout when it turns up the metal.
I’d never heard of this band before but I loved both tracks. This release, on heavy vinyl, definitely one for fans. ****

RECKLESS LOVE – Die Hard/Angel Falling THE TREATMENT – The Outlaw/Way Of The World
(12” orange vinyl with innersleeve) Spinefarm/Universal
Another vinyl celebration from Spinefarm on this split 12” EP.
Reckless Love are a Finnish glam metal band and in 2013 issued their third album. These two tracks are (Hanoi Rocks comparisons aside) classic modern glam metal with a chunk of sleaze, lots of riffs and a few hooks too.
The Treatment’s The Outlaw kicks off in suitably moody fashion before picking up some seriously good sleazy metal. A nod to G’n’R and a blistering guitar solo. Way Of The World is equally good.
Lovely package and 4 great tracks – lovely return of quality vinyl releases too. ****1/2
