Album review: VINDICTIV – World of Fear

VINDICTIV – World of Fear

MelodicRock Records [Release date 10.07.15]

Swedish neo-classical metal band Vindictiv return with their fourth album, “World of Fear”, and their first with well-travelled vocalist Mark Boals.

Guitarist Stefan Lindholm, keyboard player Pontus Larsson and bassist Nalle Påhlsson have been in place since Vindictiv’s self-titled debut was released back in 2008. For “World of Fear” drummer Marco Minnemann makes his debut…you may remember that he finished runner up when Dream Theater found new drummer Mike Mangini and recently he has featured in Steven Wilson’s band.  Vocalist Mark Boals doesn’t really need an introduction…well maybe that he has sung with Yngwie Malmsteen in the past (big hint there…).

Prophecy kicks things off nicely with its subtle use of keyboards beneath the heavy riffs and powerful vocals. Why brings the Yngwie comparisons to the front with its widdly guitar solo…so many notes and so little time…

For Till The Dawn Stefan Lindholm slows things down a little and even he describes it as a “semi-ballad”. It does features a refreshing change of pace and closes with piano and vocals only. Wall Of Pain serves to prove that Mark Boals can still hit those high notes…let me hear you scream…

The Yngwie connection returns for a faithful cover of instrumental Far Beyond The Sun from Yngwie’s debut solo album back in 1984. Its only purpose really is that it serves to prove that Stefan Lindholm can certainly play the guitar!

“World of Fear” is a solid well played slice of Yngwie inspired metal and will certainly find its fans. Nothing spectacular but still enjoyable.  ***
