Now the GRTR! reviewer who penned a glowing review of Impavidus’s debut EP has now left, so it is my delicate ears taking on the sounds of Impavidus. They are like the aural equivalent of being hit by a gale force wind! Don’t be fooled by the melodic vocals of Michelle Adamson as she can hit some high notes and then she switches to some dark/growl vocals. Chris Fielding again handles production duties and Patrick McBride (bass/vocals) Gav Smith (guitars) and Chris O’Rourke (drums), complete the band’s line-up.
Take ‘Void’, not only do you have the vocals Michelle, but there is a guitar solo to burn the hairs of your head. Impavidus don’t do quiet or slow, they grab the listener with their metal hooks and don’t let go. ‘XII’ is an immense tune it has to be said. From the vocals (switching from melodic to growling vocals must take some practise), through to the guitar solo and finally the relentless rhythm section, pounding out a suitably doomy sound for a song about the end of mankind.
It pays to step outside of your musical comfort zone once in awhile as otherwise you would miss a band like Impavidus. Modern metal with a cutting edge, and then some! ****
