Album review: THE NEW ROSES – One More For The Road

Napalm Records [Release date 25.08.17]

Third album by the New Roses, who have been touring relentlessly and sound like they are from the US, when in fact they hail from Germany. The band’s line up is Timmy Rough (vocals/guitar), Norman Bites (guitar), Hardy (bass) and Urban Berz (drums).

Fourteen songs, including three bonus songs, and a playing time of over an hour it could be a case of too much of a good thing…not in this case as this album is meant to be played LOUD. From opener ‘Quarter To Twelve’ the New Roses want to rock you and rock you hard. Timmy has that gravel edged vocal and bands like Buckcherry, AC/DC, Airbourne and Little Caesar come to mind when listening to the songs on here. They have their own sound and style though as can be heard on ‘Dancing On A Razor Blade’, a song that harks back to classic 80′s hard rock sound.

‘Life Ain’t Easy (For A Boy With Long Hair)’ has been lifted as the album’s lead song and rightly so as it has a southern rock riff, with a whiff of country – like Kid Rock and Jon Bon Jovi jamming together but heavier.

Ballads? They can do them and then some with mobile phones aloft on ‘Fight You Leaving Me’.  ‘The Same Moon’ features some great guitar solos, nothing overly flash and always in keeping with the song’s main melody. The title track benefits from organ and piano fills, as the band again successfully meld southern hard rock with that little twang of country.

Even the three bonus songs are worth it, what’s not to love about a little cowbell on ‘Do I Look Scared To You?’? ‘Nitro Nights’ is a real kick out the jams tune, perfect for the live arena.

The New Roses have been ‘bubbling under’ in the rock world and with this album they deserve a bigger audience. If you love hard rock/southern rock this album is for you. ****
