KScope [Release date 23.02.18]
Gleb Kolyadin is one half of the highy-rated (and award-winning) Russian progsters iamthemorning. This, his first solo album, reveals his inspirations no more so than on the breezy opener ‘Insight’, ‘Kaleidoscope’ and ‘Echo Sigh Strand’. These recall prime-time Rick Wakeman, with Kolyadin switching between piano and synth on ‘Insight’, whilst Theo Travis adds patented Van Der Graaf/King Crimson sax and flute on the Weather Report-infused ‘Kaleidoscope’.
The addition of Steve Hogarth (vocals, ‘Confluence’ and ‘The Best of Days’) and Jordan Rudess (‘Storyteller’) add to the prog credentials supported by rhythm heavyweights Gavin Harrison and Nick Beggs.
As with iamthemorning, the overall vibe is acoustic-based prog with a handful of short, attractive piano-led tunes and with an under-used string section bolstering the classical feel as on ‘White Dawn’ .
The two Hogarth tracks are likely to pull in modern day Marillion followers but the long track ‘Confluence’ is merely Hogarth’s spoken lyric heading up another piano-led instrumental.
At times, the listener might consider some of the pieces merely cues from some long lost film noir soundtrack but when in full band (i.e. upbeat) mode the overall effect is more engaging. Definitely an album made for a decent sound system and some restrained but serious head nodding. ****
