Napalm Records [Release date 19.02.21]
Italian melodic metal band Temperance have been around since 2013, releasing their latest studio album ‘Viridian’ last year. They also feature three vocalists, namely Alessia Scolletti, Michele Guaitoli and Marco Pastorino (although he is credited normally as ‘clean/harsh vocals’).
Not a band I have heard before and perhaps an acoustic side of the band doesn’t give a full appreciation of their metallic bombast, however, a good song should still sound good no matter what arrangement it is given. Temperance don’t cheat either on the meaning of acoustic as the guitars are all acoustic, as is the percussion and only piano is added on ‘Gaia’.
To be fair, at eight songs it is more an album than EP but it does mean VFM. Means it is worth getting as a fan of the band as well as hopefully bringing them in a few new fans. Six of these songs have appeared on the ‘Viridian’ album, adding two new songs ‘Evelyn’ and ‘Paint The World’. Both of these new songs highlight the band’s vocal talents, ‘Evelyn’ being a nicely paced ballad.
On the other songs that add a little bit of Spanish flair to ‘My Demons Can’t Sleep’ – loving the percussion and maracas on this. ‘I am The Fire’ bounces along, with what sounds like a little bit of a coronet/trumpet solo. Full marks to Temperance for reimaging their songs in acoustic mode and I will certainly be seeking out their other albums.
A pleasant listen, very melodic and the vocals in particular are a highlight of the EP. ***1/2
