Every so often , from the multitude of self- produced and promoted releases, comes a gem and the debut album from this North Carolina melodic rock band is one such.
The members are all veterans of previous regional bands, and from their cover photo are not in the first flush of youth. Wisely perhaps, they stick to a classic sound with its routes in the late seventies and early eighties. Styx or Kansas would be obvious comparisons, but I was more reminded of cult AOR acts from the period such as Head East, Le Roux and Sugarcreek.
While some might say the sound is dated, I find it has a warmth and charm of its own and the home grown production actually adds to the natural feel compared to say the glossier, but sometimes rather mechanical, releases from studio projects on the likes of Frontiers Records.
Star of the show is vocalist Scott Board whose tones are crystal clear and comes over like a cross between Dennis De Young, Freddy Curci and, dare I say it, even Glenn Hughes in places.
On first listening the 13 tracks, which weigh in at over an hour, drag slightly but they get better with repeated listening, and cover a diverse range of bases, with Back on the Streets sounding like prime time Europe and Skin and Bone showing their heavier repertoire.
Unusually, some of the strongest material is buried late in the album with the pure AOR of Desiree (who as an easy rhyme must be one of the most overused girl’s names in melodic rock!, Little Things which is a straight ahead rocker reminiscent of JLT era Rainbow, and Catch Me Carrie with some great vocal harmonies.
Ignore the down home image and enjoy one of the best surprise releases you will hear in 2012.
