THUNDERSTICK – Echoes from the Analogue Asylum

Thunderstick is claimed to have paved the way for NWOBHM in the late 70’s and early 80’s. The masked drummer, who slammed skins for Iron Maiden in the early days, formed his own outfit utilising female vocalists. While the journey was short-lived, it is resurrected for this release.
There’s a feel of Joan Jett on this, not only because of the vocals, but because of the music style (particularly the guitar riffs). There’s a Rocky Horror undertone to this too, with the exception that the guitar solos rip through the band’s work!
The album has a distinct 70’s groove, with a slice of punk, and is made up of the two sessions of the band’s short career, namely, the E.P. “Feel like rock ‘n roll?” and their only L.P. “Beauty and the beasts”. “Echoes from the analogue asylum” features both releases, along with unreleased demos, showcasing the band’s music ability…and humour.
Thunderstick’s image for the time (referred to as “hammer horror”) probably didn’t appeal to many, but 30 years later, one can see the tongue-in-cheek humour that the public missed. It was this image that prevented well written, chorus-driven pop/rock from hitting the headlines, although one can’t imagine why: The Rocky Horror Picture Show and its soundtrack was massive. A damn shame.
