Album review: LARRY MILLER – On The Edge

Long time Get Ready To ROCK! favourite Larry Miller returns with his seventh album, another that demonstrates its creators love of the guitar greats like Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan et al…. and boy is this one a real grower!
The first couple of listens left a hint of predictability as a pattern of up tempo followed by slower number played out across the first half of the album but once these songs start to etch themselves on your memory that impression quickly gets forgotten.
Quality tunes like the rocking “Road Runner”, employing ZZ Top’s Tush riff in places and the humorous “Reel Me In” beautifully contrast the Gary Moore sounding album highlight and epic solo featuring “The Girl That Got Away” and the classic blues lost-love story “The Wrong Name” which itself gets an impressive extended guitar spotlight as its reprised in instrumental form to close the album.
A nice touch too is the vinyl sound effect given to the opening of “When The Blues Man Walked The Earth” paying tribute to the past greats of a genre that in this guys hands is alive and well.
Mainstream press may fail to see much beyond Joe Bonamassa where blues-rock is concerned but for those willing to seek out artists such as Walter Trout, Gwyn Ashton and Davy Knowles to name but three, will find artists who keep producing quality albums every bit as deserving of attention. Larry Miller’s is a name to add to that list… maybe he’ll be the one to eclipse Bonamassa? ****
